A GOOD WAY TO CHECK SIMTROPOLIS' STATUS IS HERE: http://status.simtropolis.com/690056
POSTING IN THIS THREAD IS LIMITED TO ST AND SC4D STAFF ONLY
Thanks for your understanding  -jeronij -
For the most up-to-date information and for any sort of inquiries regarding downtime at Simtropolis, please refer to the Official Simtropolis Twitter Page (http://twitter.com/simtropolis).
While as members of the SC4 online community, we share your concern about our friends and colleagues over at Simtropolis, but SC4D is not a site dedicated to discussing and speculating about Simtropolis, and off-site matters should remain off-site. Posts by members not on ST or SC4D Staff will be subject to removal and possible disciplinary action.
If you have any questions/concerns regarding this policy, please PM myself or another staff member.

Today, I decided to check Simtropolis. However, when I clicked on the link, it said it unavailable. Yesterday, the website was fine, until now.
Is Simtropolis Down?
This thread is the only place from this point forward where this question should ever be asked here at SC4D. Please?
Some background. All web-based fansites, sooner or later, will experience offline time. This happened, you may remember, to SC4D several weeks ago when we faced host/server issues. Across the spectrum of members, folks react differently when they discover that their favorite site is "off the air." Some just simply go about their business and do other things. Others sit and worry to themselves. Still others begin asking about what's going on. This thread is for that last category.
One of our fellow SC4 fansites, Simtropolis [linkie] (http://www.simtropolis.com), seems to be offline for various periods of time on a frequent enough basis to cause some members here to start threads entitled with some variant of "Is ST Down" as a pretty regular thing. We generally have allowed these threads to run their course, and then we remove them during routine housekeeping within a short time. This, however, represents some, albeit minor, make-work in light of the general non-substantive nature of the comments. By way of explanation, we (SC4D and its staff) don't know anything about what is going on when ST is offline. Nobody there contacts us and tells us- and we'd certainly be surprised if someone did. It is also very rare (I cannot recall a single such thread where someone posted claiming to authoritatively speak for ST in responding to the initial question) that anyone else would know. So, at bottom, these threads are pretty pointless.
When SC4D was last down, we found it very helpful to post information about the situation on threads we started at ST and at Peg's fansite [linkie] (http://simpeg.com/forum/index.php). Each of those sites very graciously allowed this to happen, and we very much appreciated the gesture of support. We'd like to reciprocate, hence this thread.
We will invite ST, whether through a special member nic we establish (the names "ST and Simtropolis" come immediately to mind) or through a staff designee, to post info about any offline time in this thread. This can be done in advance of the outage, if it is a planned one, or as it is going on in the form of updates. The only other posts that should appear here are queries as to whether ST is offline, and then only (to the extent reasonably possible) one per incident. No other commenting will be allowed- it simply has no purpose. Such comments will be removed without notice. After the incident is over, all comments will be zeroed back out, and we will be ready for the next time.
If there are any questions about this, please PM me. I'm not seeking to start a discussion here- if you feel inclined to comment, please re-read the foregoing.

That is indeed true. Even in business will companies who are usually fierce competitors cooperate so that the impact on customers can be minimised. I remember SAS grounding all Q400's the day before I was supposed to fly with on of those. At 0640 the following morning, a brand new A321 from Spain were waiting for (all 20 of) us, while a German company flew us home in the evening the same day. I don't suggest a 24 hrs emergency staff for non-profit fansites (though I believe the economy is better for those than it is for commercial airlines), but it's always nice to get some information along the way.
Anyway, through my time, I have however managed to gather some technical info about ST:
The server is rebooted every day at 0600 New York time. That means that it'll be rebooted at 11 London, 12 Berlin, 14 Moscow, 19 Tokyo, 00 Honolulu, 03 Los Angeles, 05 Chicago. See more times over at Time and Date (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?day=11&month=5&year=2008&hour=6&min=0&sec=0&p1=179). If the reboot fails for some reason, it is most likely that you'll have to wait to the following day.
Note: These times are calculated while New York is observing summer time. If the reboot is fixed to UTC/GMT, as is often the case, the daily reboot takes place at 10 UTC (which means 5 NY time during the winter, and 6 NY time during the summer). If so, the reboot time has to be changed accordingly when darker times arrive for places observing summer time (DST). If it's tied to New York time, the reboot time does not change for places observing summer time (DST).To sum up:The server reboots every day at 6 New York time. If it's not up after it's supposed to reboot itself after 24 hrs after it went offline, then you can start worry. Meanwhile, enjoy nature. It's even better than SimCity.
That is excellent info, krbe, and really does help us understand what happens. With your permission, I will probably make some content from your post persistent in this thread. Thank you for sharing this with us.

I'm double posting because it has been 12 days since my last post!!

AS of 6:50 a.m. Alaska Time (GMT-9) ST still appears to be down. We have no further information.
David
3:57 Eastern Time; Still down... :'(
That means I won't be able to go on until 4:00 PM EST tommorow!

The ST servers are based in Ontario, Canada. The exact location I am unsure of.
At least this time, we know that the problem is being worked on. The last time the site went down we had no information. I hope everything is going all right for those who are working on the problem.

Dirk lives in Burlington, Ontario. So, the servers are probably under a Burlington IP (24.141.xxx.xxx or similar).
Has anyone tried sporeum (http://www.sporeum.com/) (Simtropolis' sister site). Its not down, so I don't think it is a server problem.

If it were a server problem, you'd be getting a 404 error. You wouldn't be getting the "cat page", and nothing would show up at all--it would be as the page did not exist.
My guess is that they are upgrading the site in some way, and they needed to take it down in order to do so.
-Alex (Tarkus)
UN1: I never said that it was a server problem. I said it wasn't. Because if it was then sporeum would be down too.
Sporeum, eh? I oughta make sure for myself...
[checks]
Umm, nope, sporeum is up and running...
I can't wait for ST to come back up, I intend to debut my CJ there as soon as possible. Nerdly_cities has been through three updates at www.simcities.net so far, and boy are you gonna get a big one tomorrow! (I usually show about three cities per update, and i haven't repeated a city once yet, and i don't intend to soon, either, but it will probably make it more interesting when i do)

Muahahaha!!!! None shall stand up to the furry of the Oh Noes cat of doom!
That cat page has completely dissapeared now. Maybe ST is being switched to Version 6?
Looks like the server is down....
(as sporeum is down now too...)
Oh dear.........
So when should we begin to worry?
You may start to worry now if you like, but then again... what good does it do? ()testing()
lets look at the facts ladies, its been 2 and a month since the last upgrade so we are overdue, and the words ST 6.0 beta have been at the bottom of the page for awhile now.... it could well be, considering he did prepare a standin page.... offline tests are common and there were times during the last upgrade where the be back shortly message was unavailable....
Ah well if it were a site upgrade we would've been told wouldn't we?
Ok.. so.. should I worry about the fact that I am getting one of those annoying search pages now?
no you shouldn't :)

Offline tests do not affect online sites. The server cannot be found which probably means it's been taken offline for maintenance or swapping to a new blade. Whatever the cause, speculation is futile. It'll be back when it's back. Meantime, sit back, relax, enjoy the offerings of the LEX or better still, go get some fresh air and see what's happening in the real world.
Most definently a server problem of some sort. May be switching units or something of that nature. Anyway, the cat was on since ~ 03:00 Eastern Standard Time. Now there's nothing at all, and Sporeum is down.
It's probably because they banned me without a real reason and now have to pay for the consequences......lol.
It is definitely a server issue! :O

Sporeum is up again, Simtropolis is currently having trouble to decide. up. back to the cat page. Which is a positive development if you enjoy staring intently at pictures of cats, I suppose. :P
SimTropolis is now back online. Well, according the STEX.
ST isn't entirely back online. The blue background image that fades from dark blue to lighter blue is just white, but everything else is fine. The sTEX works too.

That's from post number two in this thread. Nobody from ST has seen fit to take us up on our offer- it sounds like they may be busy dealing with stuff at their end. That's fine. The thing is- this thread is not supposed to be a minute by minute account of whether there's a cat or not, or whether the page is now white or blue. The ST forums appear to be down right now. Nobody who knows anything in particular about this has seen fit to let us know. Speculation, as noted above, is neither productive nor allowed.
I'll say please this time. This last time.

MOD EDIT: Come on Pat, David posted a perfectly reasonable Cease & desist message above, and less than an hour later you post another status message. It's not necessary and it doesn't add anything (especially when the same thing was posted further up this page) - Fred
Why do they have to upgrade the site??? I liked it the way it was!! Until then... I don't know what I'll do... :'( Oh... I made Update 11 today and now I can't post it...
Note: The way ST is now, it looks ugly!
Edit: The chat also works...
The ST chat seems to be up, I suppose nobody is saying you can't ask about what is going on in there.
though nobody seems to know much now, that may change if an admin pops by
It is only the forums that arre down currently...
Either than that there is no information! :'( :-[
well now the entire site is just down, Ugg
The entire site is down again %wrd
lol me and un1 are just hanging out in the chat which is still functioning
Nobody else can get in because the site is down :D
possible to get a direct link to the chat?
no, I tried
it says "authenitcation failed" when you try to do that
I wouldn't say the site is down. Its not a "404" or "can't find server" problem. The site is showing, its just that all its showing is "Simtropolis is temporarily unavailable."
And, if you highlight the whole page, you get some crafty white lettering on a white background.
So far it is saying "Status: OK"
OK, I'm locking the thread, and want everyone who's posted to go back and read the rules. This isn't a chat thread about ST.
Oh, and I will personally suspend the next person's SC4D membership who starts a new thread on this topic.
David
I just arrived back at home from my brief trip this weekend and found a PM from Meg (SkiGeek) over at ST. As of about five hours ago, the site was still down as they worked to deal with some sort of attack. I will PM her back and invite her or any other staff member at ST to post updates here, as I will unlock the thread for that purpose.
Please, posts only from ST staff from this point until the situation is resolved. Thanks.
David
Thank you, David.
I'm not going to say too much about the attack since I don't want to give any press to the bleeps who created it. Suffice it to say it is a wide-spread attack and, if you google it, you will find a variety of sites that have been hit including sites involving family farms, herbal teas, newspapers, canoe trips, and at least one city government and one university.
In addition to eliminating the malicious code, Dirk is working to plug the security hole, which is apparently a weakness in the software.
Sorry for the hassle, guys. We are working diligently to clean up this mess.
Meg
Hello, Everyone.
I wanted to let you know that as of 2245 hours Eastern Time (here in North Carolina), SImtropolis is back on-line along with the STEX and the Forums. The following message has been posted under the "Latest News" link at the bottom of the main page banner:
QuoteWelcome back! This is what happened... - 05/25/2008 10:36 PM
Welcome back, everyone. We apologize for the site being down for the past few days. The site was attacked and malicious code was injected via some exploits in the forum software. We have tried our best to restore the data from backups, and remove malicious code, but there was a semi-catastrophic loss of data.
A large portion of the posts are intact, however, some posts that are especially long may have been truncated. We have tried to restore these the best we can but they have not been restored 100%. If your message was affected, please feel free to edit and restore your post the best you can. We have done our best to patch up the exploits in the forum software and have notified the forum software developers. Thanks for being patient, and thanks to those who have offered to help.

I do know only simtropolis staff are supposed to write here but on going on simtropolis about 10 minutes ago almost imediately my anti virus program AVG jumped in telling me that 2 trojan horses had infected my computer. It did put them in the virus vault. I thought I should alert the comunity because well no one wants to get a virus do they?
However this maybe a false alarm although at the time the only programs open were msn messenger and itunes so well I think its probably simtropolis which is a great shame. Also I suspected this because of the goings on in the last few days.
Heres a screenshot from my virus vault showing what came in when I went on Simtropolis
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg140.imageshack.us%2Fimg140%2F7196%2Fsimtropvirusuv7.jpg&hash=ae63d5dd4d25d25ef547ed03398a1e469ffe3a6b)
I only wanted to post this to warn people so if Im wrong can someone delete this post so as to not cause confusion.
Hi Will,
It looks like that was a coincidence, if you look at the path to Trojan's in the screenshot you'll see that they are on your PC and therefore cannot be from ST, unless you were downloading from the STEX at the time, in which case you should warn the mods there that they have an infected file.
EDIT: Seems like you might be onto something there as the files are in your Temp files (only just noticed) I would get onto the staff there about this asap.
Fred
This thread is still an ST-Staff only area.
Hello, All.
It has come to my attention that Simtropolis is having a bit of trouble recovering from the attack on the site. Many of the threads that had been repaired and data recovered have been damaged again. I don't have any estimate as to when the site will come back on-line. We will all have to wait for news of that event.
As I receive more information, I shall post it in this thread.
(Thanks, Craig.)

Hey all, welcome back and thanks for being patient. Our goal was to try to restore as much of the great, years-in-the-making legendary threads and City Journals and Omnibus articles. A lot of them have been restored, but there are still some gaps. We will try our best to continue to restore them, so if any of your threads are affected, please feel free to try to patch them up yourself, if at all possible. Thanks again for all the support, we'll keep your updated!
Enjoy.

Just a temporary out I guess.

I guess there really isn't much of a point in restating the obvious but Simtropolis will in fact "Be back soon!" We've had a bit of weather pass through Durham, NC so I've been off-line most of the evening. Again, as soon as I have further status, I'll post it in this thread.

Hello, All.
I have the following information for you concerning the on-going issues with SImtropolis.
Simtropolis has indeed gotten "hit" mulitple times. THe Administrators have been cleaning up the databases and removing leftover "residue" from the hacking attack. Apparently, not only have posts been corrupted and "hit, signatures and the search function have been corrupted. The best way to "clean out the site is for it be periodically be taken down in order for the hacking "residue" doesn't further multiply and continue to be removed. Finally, the Administrators are running test to backtrack how the hackers got into the site.
As I receive more status, I shall update this thread.

i think we need a traffic light up in the corner, named the Simtropolis traffic light, where it goes red when its down, and green when its upĀ ;D
it may stop the questions being repeatedly asked.. "is ST down?" ;D
Gking, I would point you to the top 2 posts above.
As folks have been asking about the situation with the outage at Simtropolis today, I figured, in keeping with the purpose of this thread, I would update the situation.
Simtropolis is, as of 9:29pm PST 1/27/2011, back up and running. As ST Admin Meg referred to here (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=32&threadid=119805&STARTPAGE=1#1810742), it is apparently part of an ongoing upgrade process.
Also keeping in this thread, I would ask on behalf of the staff that, unless you are an SC4D or ST staff member, that you would please refrain from further comments/speculation about the upgrades and outages here. Your post may be subject to moderator action.

I understand the above statement very well. BUT, I don't know any other way of contacting anyone at Simtropolis. I suddenly have NO access to thier site or Peg's site. BOTH are saying my IP address has been marked as forbidden to access. I am not sure what has happened. I haven't even accessed either site in several weeks. I have the same IP address I had the last time I went there. If someone could PM me here or send me an e-mail explaining why I seem to have been banned without any explaination, I would really appreciate it.
Sorry I had to use this thread to contact the folks at Simtropolis and for that matter SimPeg as well. Hopefully you will understand my predicament and understand. Thank you Jeronij and the rest of Sim City Devotion for your understanding.
