Welcome to my first MD and biggest challenge so far!
I am glad to have the opportunity to take you with me to Jakarta, capital of Indonesia.
A city I lived in for a year, Jakarta is one of the most amazing metropolises in the world, yet one of the least renowned.
Jakarta is a myriad of Asian and developing nation contrasts: upscale condominiums and ultra-modern office buildings rising in the middle of shanty areas, massive multi-storey malls erected along sickening canals, Bentleys driving next to Bajajs, wild nightclubs across mosques... the line is always diffuse in Jakarta.
Founded as
Batavia 480 years ago by the Dutch, Jakarta was once a sleepy fishing village known as
Sunda Kelapa. Today, Jakarta is the financial and political center of Indonesia, a nation of 235 million people and the most powerful economy in South East Asia.
However, Jakarta faces more challenges than ever: 23 million people in its metro area and growing, perpetual gridlock, overwhelming pollution, poverty, insufficient and obsolete infrastructures, rampant corruption and disastrous floods year after year...
Now, as for my CJ, for obvious reasons, I had to scale the city down. Unfortunately, when I decided to do Jakarta, I faced two major problems:
First, the housing and layout. 90% of the city looks this mess. Now, how do you come up with that using the SC4 grid system? that's the tricky part... I basically had to gather all the custom content I found suitable and edit several lots to achieve this chaotic look. Thus, most of my CJ is made up of plopped lots.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg34.picoodle.com%2Fimg%2Fimg34%2F4%2F6%2F24%2Ff_JakartaLayom_4f5b47b.jpg&hash=5d90faaaeedc5464ba05bd3d2708225f13b5dd38)
And second: so many amazing skyscrapers and condominiums in Jakarta... but how many Jakarta BATs can you find? ...none! This is why I had to review all the custom buildings in SC4 fan sites and find the ones that resembled the most. Some match, some others... well, you may have to use your imagination a little bit ;)
This is the summary of updates which I plan to publish weekly. My city is almost finished, so you have my word this CJ will not be lost in time.
1. A closer look on Jakarta's chaotic streets: random scenes of Jakarta
2. Kota: the old Dutch settlement of Batavia
3. Pantai Mutiara: the exclusive waterfront in the bay of Jakarta
4. Sunda Kelapa: the old harbor, still in use for fishermen and small cargo
5. Monas: one of the largest squares in the world, boasting former dictator Sukarno's last erection
6. Thamrin: the first half of the Thamrin – Sudirman road, the backbone of Jakarta
7. The Golden Triangle: the financial district of Jakarta
8. Senayan: the city sports complex and home to the national Stadium
9. Pondok Indah: the exclusive gated community and country club, home of Indonesia's who-is-who
10. Mangga Dua: so many massive malls next to each other
11. Ancol: the largest leisure resort in South East Asia
12. Kemayoran: the former international airport of Jakarta, now a high-rise development zone
13. Halim Airport: Jakarta's charter and air force airport
14. Blok M: a mash-up of malls, bus stations, red light district and expats
15. Kelapa Gading: a new, flood-prone development in Jakarta
16. Tanjung Priok: the massive port of Jakarta

I hope you have enjoyed this and stay put for the first update starting next week.
Very good new update
Your city look good ;)
Nice coty and nice BAT's you have there, especialy on the highways. How did you do that?
hey that looks just like Jakarta. This is great. keep it up m friend, oh where did you get the slums in the last pic??
Wow looks a lot like Jakarta
unique! &apls &apls
Your industrial dock area is impressive, most impressive. &apls It makes me wish SC4 did more with outgoing freight instead of having it disappearing in Sim City Space.
I love the squished look of the pics, very very nice and eye pleasing.
good start
I'm curious now how the entire city looks like
it's good to see some one start a less known city in Asia
good luck, I will follow your MD!
E
One word: WOW !!!!
But no, that would not do right, have to say a bit more.
What you achieved with this teaser is extra-ordinairy. So many challenges in recreating that city in this game, and yet the result is so natural looking. it might not be 100% right in lay out and buildings, but the atmosphere that is sparkling of these in game pictures is so right.
You deserve a medal for that already... I just know where this MD will be next month......
But: you will have to reveal the secret of the highways. How on earth did you do that?
Just magnific, just splendid: WOW
Excellent work at the Lot Editor, I love.
It is a perfect re-creation of Jakarta, bravo.
Go on, I want a another Pics.
Super start. Maybe one of the best I have seen for a while. Everything is so nicely put together. I love the highway, skyscrapers and the shanty town pictures. Those are my favourites for sure. Your city must have a wide devercity of wealths, very well done if this is the case.
Robin
Hey Derwilly,
You are generating quite some interest here and it's easy to see why.
This is a great start. Some very interesting shots, the flood pic is great and the traffic and port pics give the city the feel of hustle and bustle that I am sure you wanted to achieve. And some of the pics seem to be from a slightly different angle which is also nice.
It looks as though you have created some custom content here, which is always a nice touch.
It seems a hug project you are attempting so I wish you all the best with it.
Paul

I want to thank everyone for those +230 visits in less than a week. I hope I can fulfill everyone's expectations with this ambitious project!
Simpson – thank you very much for your support and first comment!
mrtnrln – thanks! About the highways... no secret, just Lot Editor. The Maxis highways are an eye-sore to me. Please read below my reply to Sebes for more info
Sky Guy – thank you, I put a lot of effort into making my city resemble Jakarta; keep an eye on the next updates and you'll see how close I came. You can get the shanties here (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/index.cfm?id=16835) (I used the Lot Editor, though)
tankmank – thanks, wait till I put actual pictures of Jakarta in each update to compare it
Heblem – thanks! Jakarta is indeed a unique city...
mrgscottc – thanks, unfortunately you'll have to wait till my last update to see the megaport ;D FYI, I used three city tiles to make it... it is huge and highly detailed
Kitsune – thanks! I just tried one day resizing the height to 70% and the perspective turned out to be much more realistic
ejc – thank you very much! I'll soon put a region view; there are still some empty areas I need to fill to make it look better. It is a good thing Jakarta is not well-known: there's more to enjoy for the few who go there :D
sebes – thank you very, very much. It was hard hitting it. Due to the limitations of SC4 it's quite difficult to get it 100% right but you'll see in the next updates that I got somewhat close. About the highways... sorry to disappoint you, but I did not come up with some sort of "super highway enhancement mod" at all ;D ... it's just 4x8 pieces I did with the Lot Editor... highway textures, hedges, trees, lamps, a bunch of cars, the special bus lane... it's only eye-candy, tough &ops
Earth quake – hehe thank you! stay put the first update is coming this week!
rooker1 – thank you very much Robin; I hope I can keep up and keep the excitement going on for the rest of my MD. You'll get to see more experiments with highways, towers and slums, just stay put!
paroch – thanks! I think that when recreating a real Asian city the Lot Editor is a must... otherwise it's hard to capture the chaotic atmosphere... hope I got with this one ;)
Update Number 1 is coming soon!
UPDATE 1: A CLOSER LOOK ON JAKARTAWelcome to my first update. I'll show you just random pictures of Jakarta's cityscape. I will focus on some aerial scenes of Jakarta´s main thoroughfares and the Taman Anggrek shopping mall. You will also see some comparisons between in-game pictures and real pictures (so that you understand how difficult is to recreate Jakarta ;D)
To start off, let us take a look to the main axis in North Jakarta, the Hayam Wuruk / Gajah Mada road. Starting north in Kota, the Dutch old town, this road goes south until Monas, Jakarta's main square and political center. It was once the core of the city and also one of the hottest spots during the 1998 riots against former dictator Suharto.

Let's go for some close ups of this road and nearby streets:

In Hayam Wuruk we can also find Stadium, the largest and seediest after-hours club in Jakarta. Packed every night, vice and drugs take over this place on weekends, when the occasional, out-of-place expat gets pick pocketed (I know what I'm talking about &ops).

Hope you enjoyed this first update; I also hope that this MD will help you understand better this beautiful mess that is Jakarta. Next week we'll visit Kota, the Dutch historic district.
Stay put!
WOW OMG &apls &apls
I never seen a so beautiful région &apls &apls
It's so réalistic
So really good new update there :)
It looks good, but I give you one tip: don't flatten that pictures. That looks so unrealistic.
hehehee... nice :) you did it.. you made an entire Asian recreation-region
(think it's a first &apls)
E
This exceeds my expectations - totally. What you achieved is freaking unbelievable.
I cannot believe how close the picture above the line "Jakarta has 13 rivers crossing" is with the aereal picture just above it. It's fantastic. Also the shopping mall area is excellent.
I cannot wait to see what you've done with the Kota area.... I stay tuned ...
(just a small advise: number your pictures - for easier referencing when giving compliments
Edit 9jul: Thanks for editing your previous update and adding numbers: I was referring to pic 1.15 above..)

Thanks again to everyone for those +360 views! and a special thank you to my little hardcore fan community:
Simpson: you are always the first, thanks! if you like the region view, wait til I finish the massive aerial view collage I'm doing...
mrtnrln: thanks, but... do you really think so? I think we are too used to the SC4 perspective and it feels strange now, but IMHO flattening the pictures gives a stronger 3d perspective, don't you think? thanks anyways and please keep coming ;)
ejc: thanks! as I said to Simpson, I'm coming up with a massive aerial view of the whole city; I just hope I can find the way to upload such a large file!
sebes : thank you very much! I hope I can continue exceeding everyone's expectations. I think Kota will look nice. Oh and thanks for the numbering tip, I applied it to Update 1 already
Udpate 2 is coming tomorrow: Kota, the old Dutch town
My respect on your work. If this isn't the most recreation in SC4 I've ever seen I'll change my name into Sucker :)
You've done your best to create new lots like the shopping mall. I love this region shot!
wow impresionant work my friend
the seaport look very good &apls ;)

UPDATE 2: THE OLD DUTCH TOWN OF KOTA AND ITS SURROUNDINGSWelcome to my second update.
This week we will visit the old Dutch colonial town of Kota. Although little remains from the previous splendor of the colonial city, Jakarta still boasts a small but very surprising old town that makes us doubt whether we are in Jakarta or Amsterdam.
It all started in 1596, when the first Dutch ships arrived to the area with the intention of trading spices. Decades and centuries of struggles between the Dutch, the British and local kingdoms would result in a not always pleasant coexistence.
Among some of the good and really terrible things the Dutch did in Indonesia, they made one urban mistake that Jakarta is still paying nowadays. They insisted in creating some sort of New Amsterdam, that would resemble a Dutch town, with similar architectural style, squares, warehouses, canals and bridges. However, when the engineers started building the canals using the many rivers and streams in the area, the built those canals completely flat, with barely no inclination towards the sea.
This caused the water to stagnate and not recirculating, and added to the tropical climate, it became a focus of contamination and diseases that would merciless devastate both the Dutch and the locals. Nowadays, when facing a canal in Jakarta, one can only remain still a couple of minutes before feeling sickened.
If any of you is interested in learning more about the exciting history of the city, just check the Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Jakarta).
After this brief and hopefully not boring introduction, let us see some pictures ;)
PART I - The aerial shots2.1 This is an aerial view of Kota. In here you can see the train station, some old trading post buildings, one of the canals and the main square:

2.2 and this is what I came up with. You will notice that some roads have disappeared and have been replaced by pedestrian streets. This was done last year so it can't be seen in the previous picture.

So that's it for this week. I hope you have enjoyed it and I apologize if it takes too long to load all the pictures &ops
Stay put for next week: Pantai Mutiara, the exclusive waterfront of Jakarta!!
hmmmm.... very nice and so realistic  &apls
wow thats a really nice perfective of the real city and your Sc4 city!, its almost exactly, i meant it is! makes me want to visit the real city, its interesting the old dutch town and the slums near to it.
Excellent update again my friend - really excellent.
The remake of the old Dutch town looks great. I like again how you put the RL pics and the game shots next to each other. It's always strange to see Dutch houses and canals in the tropics (or, what's left of it).
You made a great choice in the buildings that you picked to resemble the real Jakarta. Well done! &apls
Yup. As far as recreations go, this is one of the best I have ever seen. I really wouldn't know where to start, but I think what impresses the most is the cluttered feeling - everything looks really dense and organic.
Basically: &apls &apls &apls
I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures in there original perspective though. I mean, it looks cool with the scewed angles, but I'm really interested in how an actual ingame shot would look too.
Anyways: amazing job, looking forward to more.
Wow derwilly, you have captured a perfect resemblance of Jakarta! I love how you show the updates with the real life satellite images to show us what you are creating.
I've loved all updates you have shown, especially the Dutch Town, slums and Taman Anggrek Mall. I can assure you that this MD will be in Best Sellers really soon.
I remember back 2/3 years ago, when I did not have access to to the internet, I made Jakarta using only Maxis buildings... It looked quite rubbish to be honest; I plopped about 10 Fernsehturms from Berlin in the suburbs seperate from each other :)
I look forwards to seeing more of the city, especially the Jalan Thamrin and Wisma 46.
Alex
I just love this MD!!
nice to see the slums and the "different" side of Djakarta!
I like the modern cluster of building along avenues and the slums heading behind that.. nice contrast!
keep it going and surprise us..
E
Looks really good and the different perspective gives it something truly special, well done!
This is an incredible MD derwilly. I look forward to seeing more.
Stewart
hi derwilly ,i'm a new member and i have look your MD and i have find it very beautiful and so realistic well done !!
vincent
Your updates are really great here! Nice MD! And wonderful work on your city!
This certainly is an excellent recreation. I like how you did the rail station, looks like the real thing
I too though would be interested in the original perspective of shots.
This deserves some sort of award! "$Deal"$
I have to second NASCAR_Guy, this is unique. There is a lot of work represented here. Great job. &apls
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg26.picoodle.com%2Fimg%2Fimg26%2F4%2F7%2F16%2Ff_untitled52m_6971f13.jpg&hash=b72404f145845be70dc4d46c9cb2ef1ba06fa10b)
Hi everyone
Again, thanks everyone for those
+650 visits in just a few weeks. I'm really glad this MD is having such a positive reception. This recreation of Jakarta was supposed to be something quite different and I was afraid it would have a rather lukewarm reception. But you proved me wrong
BUT, there is one thing that is dividing opinions here: the matter of the perspective.
See, I never really liked the original SC4 camera angle; it feels too vertical in my opinion and does not give a sense of depth or 3D. However, some of you don't seem to share this. So, from now on, I'll combine booth squished pictures and original pictures. At least for aerial shots I think the 3D feeling is more necessary, even though some tall buildings may look somewhat dwarfed. And for close-ups, I'll maintain the original perspective to get a better detail.
I hope you'll be pleased with this! ;)
And now, a special thanks to...
feliwi: vielen Dank! Jakarta is indeed one darn difficult city to recreate, but I'll do my best so that you don't have to change your name to Sucker! Oh if you like malls and region shots, be ready for my next updates...
art128: thanks a bunch! You'll have to wait a bit to see the update of the port but I promise it won't disappoint you!
Heblem: hehe thanks! I'm trying hard. The thing is, Jakarta is perhaps the ugliest city on Earth... but at the same time, no other city is as photogenic and addictive as Jakarta. You can easily fill a 1GB memory card in just a couple of days...
Sebes: thanks for your loyalty to my MD! Hope you liked the Dutch part. I'm still breaking my brains with the Lot Editor trying to get the real feeling, you know.
See, there are not many Dutch left in Jakarta, but those who live there... man, there's no way they're going back to Holland! $%Grinno$%
Emilin: thank you very much! When doing a faithful recreation there is little space for personal style, but still, when you see the overall work it's a great feeling. ()stsfd()
I'm finishing a massive aerial shot (not a region view) of the whole city. Then you will see what dense REALLY means!
As for the perspective, you read the intro already...
Warszawa: thanks a bunch! This just got started I'm confident that what's coming will still impress everyone. Hope you are right about the Best Sellers! ;)
hehe, sounds more like a visionary recreation of Jakarta than anything else! as I said in my intro, the worst part of this is that there's not one single building from Jakarta in the fan sites...
Hope you'll like the Thamrin part. I did find one building that kinda resembles the now called BNI 46...
ejc: thank you very much! Jakarta is THE city of contrasts. You'll see in the next updates the financial district with skyscrapers rising next to slums...
caspervg: thanks! About the perspective, hope you agree with my intro. Hope to see you again!
stewart garden: thank you very much! You'll see more, my friend. Just be patient!
South Park: hi and welcome to SC4Devotion! Thanks, hope to see you again in my MD
bat: thanks a lot! That is quite a compliment! ;)
Yoman: thank you very much! I was quite worried because I couldn't find any similar rail station and then it just occurred to me the easiest way... come up with your own :D
NASCAR_Guy: hehe thanks... just get me some fresh beer ;D ;D ;D
amapper: well thank you very much! There's really a bunch of work behind this recreation. You'll see ;)
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg29.picoodle.com%2Fimg%2Fimg29%2F4%2F7%2F16%2Ff_CollageJakam_90f4636.jpg&hash=0fd9642df2e2a50a04fc3aff399d40b22880228f)
Coming soon: Pantai Mutiara, the exclusive waterfront of Jakarta!
It looks amazing. You really captured the South-East Asian feel to this. By the way what residential BATs did you have for this because I can't find these Asian style homes & those garbage props ()what()
I rarely reply at sc4 but this is an exception!
However, i'd enjoy it much, much more without the perspective changes.
Hello, derwilly!
This is my first comment here, and I apologize for taking so long!
Your doing some wonderful work here, my friend, I must say. An excellent job recreating Jakarta! I now look forward to following along with everyone else are you present more of your work here!
Take care,
Dustin
UPDATE 3 - PANTAI MUTIARA, THE EXCLUSIVE WATERFRONT OF JAKARTA Welcome to my third update.
This time we will take a different approach. We are moving to North Jakarta to Pantai Mutiara, one of the pioneer water developments. Pantai Mutiara, "Pearl Beach", was developed around the 80's. It is a development that once envisioned upscale residences and condominiums in several islands with private piers, marinas and beaches. Of course, as usual in Indonesia, the project was visionary but upon its completion it ended up being more of a trouble than anything else.
Nowadays it is still one of the most expensive areas in Jakarta, but the pollution of the waters carried by the rivers flowing to Pantai Mutiara have made the dream of living by sea something closer to a nightmare. Floods take their toll yearly when those rivers, like giant sewers, bring the garbage of several millions to the very doorstep. Plus, slums have spread merciless almost wall-to-wall to some of those mansions.
Part I - Satellite pictures 3.1 Pantai Mutiara, in the middle, stretches north from Pluit, a Chinese enclave (which will be reviewed in a future update). The Regatta, a massive luxury complex is currently being built at the northern edge.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg29.picoodle.com%2Fimg%2Fimg29%2F4%2F7%2F18%2Ff_untitledm_b11b0b1.png&hash=f4cf1f7180c7aff42ad1278e13c0c8763f9c8319)
3.2 This is perhaps one of the areas I had to rescale the most, for if I made the islands bigger, they would look out of proportion compared to the rest of the city. Notice that I picked the darkest water mod I found, in an attempt to recreate the one of the most polluted urban waters on Earth. Other parts you see, like the harbors or the water reservoirs I leave for other updates.

This was it! Hope you enjoyed and I'll see you next week with Update 4: Monas, the center of Jakarta
What an incredible update.
I'm loving how you compare the real life pics with the ingame ones.
You have done a very good job at replicating the city.
This is fast becoming one of my favourite MDs.
No need to tell you how realistic your MD is.... ;)

DaViru$ : thanks! I just received your PM now. Most of the houses are from THIS (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=724) dependency pack (which is locked but links you to the new one) and from SOMY (http://members3.jcom.home.ne.jp/somy000/index.htm). UPDATE 4 - MERDEKA SQUARE, THE CENTER OF JAKARTA Welcome to my fourth update!
Merdeka Square is a huge plain located in the center of Jakarta. This square is surrounded by important government buildings such as Istana Merdeka (the presidential palace), Indonesia's Supreme Court and various government ministries. It also features the Monumen Nasional or Monas in the middle of it, Gambir central station, the Masjid Istiqlal and the cathedral of Jakarta.
Monas was built under the government of Sukarno, Indonesia's first president, as a symbol of the independence of this new nation. Since it was built during the last years of Sukarno, before he was deposed by general Suharto, Monas is also referred by the locals as Sukarno's
last erection.
Again, I had to rescale this entire area pretty much to half its original size.
PART I - Aerial shots

4.2 Here you can see Merdeka Square and Monas in the middle, the beginning of Thamrin road running southwest, Senen neighborhood on the east and Pasar Baru in the north-east. Notice the amount of canals criss-crossing this area. Unfortunately, the skyscrapers of Thamrin will be reviewed in another update, as well as the old Pasar Baru.

PART IV - Religious buildings
4.12 Masjid Istiqlal is Indonesia's national mosque. It was built in 1975 and became Southeast Asia's largest mosque. More than 120,000 people can congregate at the mosque at one time. Although Indonesia has an overwhelming Muslim majority, making it the largest Muslim nation in the world, the country is not an Islamic state.
The Indonesian Constitution states that "every person shall be free to choose and to practice the religion of his choice" and "guarantees all persons the freedom of worship, each according to his own religion or belief". The government, however, officially only recognizes six religions, namely Islam, Protestantism, Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Confucianism.
In this picture you can see the Mosque as viewed from Monas. In the background you can see the tall condominiums built along Kemayoran's former airport site and even farther the cranes of the Tanjung Priok harbor. Yes, that will all come in future updates ;)

art128: thanks Arthur!

bat: thank you sir! more is coming, you'll see
warszawa: thanks Alex! I think you have waited enough, so I decided that Thamrin will be the next update
Ok, I have now good news and bad news.
Good news is that in my next update you'll see the first of probably several updates of the financial district. Since Jakarta has several major skyscraper areas sprawling south it would be impossible to review them all in one update.
Bad news is that I'm leaving on a roadtrip with two friends of mine till next week, so no updates this week! sorry for that :'(

- The Staff
derwilly, hey! Your excellent MD is doing a great job of introducing me to a part of the world I know little about. The attention to real world detail you're showing is reminiscent of great past journals like Edmonton [linkie] (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=36&threadid=37869&enterthread=y). I hope that a month in OSITM here will broaden your readership- it would be well-deserved.
Good luck!
David
Congrats on your award there! &apls &apls And looking forward to the next update...
Congratulation my friend I love the style of your work continu it's very good
guys I am honored to be showcased in the OSITM... all I can say is a big THANK YOU to all of you!!!!
I am back from my small road trip and with a bunch of work ahead, but I'll make sure I deliver some good stuff this month. As usual, stay put!
I love your style, is far too hard for me to accomplish. Hope you come back soon.
1 question, is your city functioning or static? It still looks awesome either way.
Congrats derwilly,
This MD really has my attention right now. I think this might be one of the biggest MDs right now. Your attention to detail and making SC4 scenes very similiar to real life is outstanding and very, very impressive.
You definately have the chance to widen your following this month and I'm sure you will.
I wait for your next update as I'm sure it will be spectacular.
Robin &apls
UPDATE 5 - THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT (PART I): featuring Thamrin road Hi everyone and welcome to my 5th update!
So many things are happening this summer and if that were not all, my MD is showcased in the OSITM! thanks again to everyone!
I am finally delivering the first of several, yet non-consecutive updates of Jakarta's financial district. As we have seen in the past updates, Jakarta does not have something we could really call "street layout". Thus, the downtown is not concentrated in just a few blocks, for there are no proper blocks in Jakarta. Office towers, malls and condominiums are built along the main thoroughfares, giving an impressive feeling of a skyscraper forest that never ends. And since there's so much to be reviewed, several updates will be necessary.
The financial district of Jakarta is mainly concentrated along the Thamrin and Sudirman roads. This is basically the same road that changes names after crossing the river. The first part is named after Mohammed Husni Thamrin, one of the leaders of the Indonesian independence, which is the one we are focusing now on.
Be ready for a heavy update and enjoy!
Part I - Satellite pictures 5.1 Thamrin road starts at Merdeka Square (remember?) direction south. The most famous landmark is the huge roundabout at Bundaran HI, site of the former Hotel Indonesia, the first ever to be built in modern style in Indonesia. Since I'm busier than expected I'll show you a small bonus update this week. I give you a hint: this is what always happens after some heavy rains...
I am looking forward to the update.
You have done such a great job so far. How has this project not consumed your entire life?
BONUS 1 - FLOODS! Welcome everybody!
This week I present you the first of several small bonus updates that I will be releasing between the official updates. These bonus updates will help me cover items that wouldn't be worth a full update or that I may leave behind in future weeks.
This time we are going to see one of the saddest and most unbelievable sides of Jakarta: the floods.
Every year during the rainy season, especially towards the end of January and beginning of February there's heavy rainstorms caused by the monsoons. From West to East, the rains start in the island of Sumatra and sweeps the archipelago towards the island of Papua.
In Jakarta floods occur because of the inadequate infrastructures of the city and the garbage in the rivers and canals that block the water. Jakarta, being located in a basin, is surrounded by mountains and elevated terrains; when water flows to the city, the lack of emergency flood canals makes those high levels of water to run through Jakarta and bump into endless obstacles.
Jakarta's chaotic development is determined by well-connected construction and real estate tycoons who openly flout regulations and make huge profits speculating in the construction of shopping malls and housing complexes. Jakarta's construction boom over the past decade has compounded the city's flooding problem by gobbling up natural water catchments, such as lakes and rice paddies, and denuding the surrounding hills of trees.

Lol I really like your work in this city it's very good
Great innondation I love the water on the highway lol very good ;)
Great use there of the floods in that new update!
Wonderful work on your city and pictures!
Looking forward to more...
Great update Derwilly. I guess that is also what Amsterdam would look like after a rainy day if the city was in a different part of the world.... Looking at these pictres I am very glad. Now it looks like that after a cloudburst - but that happens not too often (and if it happens it lasts half an hour and we speak about it for days!)
I'm speechless, very amazing work! :o
This is a very different update compared to your other updates. It's nice to see another side of Jakarta.
You have done a wonderful, yet realistic job on the flooding pictures. Good to see the Emergency boats in action &apls
10/10 for pure Eyecandy work :satisfied:
Alex
exellent update here :o :o the flood look really real &apls &apls

Boy oh boy, I never thought this summer was going to be this hectic. However, I do my best to feed my hungry readers :D
Thanks again to those who keep visiting my MD! Let's see if we can push this to the Best Sellers at the end of the month!
eugenelavery: this city is not taking my entire time but a lot of it... which is why at least for the next months I´ll have to slow down the pace of updates :'(
Simpson: you may like the floods on the highway... but I guarantee that those drivers stuck in the jam don't! :D
bat: thanks bat, I would have loved to dig deeper on the floods idea, maybe in the future...
sebes: thanks! well it's a good thing you don't get floods like this every year...even though it would be the topic of the month!
panthersimcity4: well if you're speechless then there's nothing to say :D
warszawa: thanks Alex!
art128: well that's the idea, thanks!
rooker1: thanks robin!
I'll try to bring you guys something tomorrow, even it it's another small bonus update. Meanwhile... keep waiting:

Lol excellent picture :D
Yes your pic is very funny $%Grinno$%
I will be here for the next update :)
Absolutely stunning work you have shown us here Derwilly. I can only imagine the time and effort that has gone into this, with what looks like custom lots and bats. And the smallest details are very impressive...... those bus lanes that we see in the RL pics have been replicated superbly in your city - beautiful work.
The mixture of RL pics, satelite pics and the 3d warehouse pics really bring this alive.
BONUS 2 - PASAR BARU! Welcome yet again to a new update of my MD. This week we will review an interesting part of Jakarta in a small bonus update.
Built as Old Batavia's third commercial center 180 years ago Pasar Baru, or
New Market, initially served as an upper-class shopping arcade for the residents of what was then Rijswijk, now Jalan Veteran. Chinese traders moved from the older Glodok area to the new prestigious block next to the Ciliwung river and opened shops selling everything from spectacles to shoes. After some time the market specialized in fabrics and textile products, giving its current reputation as the one of the largest textile markets in Jakarta along with Tanah Abang.
The market has a distinctive Indian flavor, given by the small community of Indian traders and entrepreneurs that settled in Jakarta.
Since the end of World War II and after Pakistan and India split in 1947, many Indian people emigrated to Jakarta to find a new and better life. In 2002, there were around 2,000 Indian families registered as living in Jakarta, with most of them residing in the central part of the city, especially in the Pasar Baru and Pintu Air areas. Most of the ethnic Indians living in Jakarta work as tailors, or run textile, curtain, or sports shops. These entrepreneurs, mostly originating from Sind and Punjab, North India, are locally perceived as being more successful at business than other immigrants.
The Indian traders tend to give their stores in Pasar Baru Hindu or Indian names, such as Bombay or Maharaja. Even though most of the Indians run accessories, textile and sports equipment stores, there are also some traders of Javanese, Chinese, and Arab descent running the same sorts of businesses.

paroch: thanks! I think that when recreating a real-life city, comparing the results with actual pictures is a must. Especially with a city like Jakarta, where nobody would believe me unless I show some evidence!
art128: thank you very much Arthur!
panthersimcity4: hehe thanks! yes those arcades are useful when it starts pouring... but little can they do when everything is flooded afterwards!! oh btw, me encanta tu CJ de San Pedro. I just wish I had more time to review all CJs and MDs more carefully :'(
Simpson: merci Simpson! I also love the aerial shots. They take quite some time because they are usually mosaics of several cities...
bat: thanks bat! you know what? I think that if I gave you a penny every time you say "wonderful" you'd be a millionaire already! :D :D :D thanks man!
Next update is almost done. I shall release it tomorrow!
UPDATE 6 - KEMAYORANKemayoran is a subdistrict of Central Jakarta. It was once the location of Kemajoran Airport, the principal airport for Jakarta until 1985, when it was replaced by the massive Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in the regency of Cengkareng.
International flights were temporarily moved to Halim Pendanasukuma Air Force Base in 1975, and Kemajoran closed completely in 1985 when the present airport at Cengkareng opened. Kemajoran closed due to crowded airspace and proximity to the city center and also to the Halim Pendanasukuma Airport.
For those who read Tintin when you were younger, Kemajoran Airport is the setting for the beginning of the Tintin adventure, Flight 714. Do young people still read Tintin nowadays?

The runway at Kemajoran Airport was used to form wide boulevards in the area, which was projected to become an area with wide roads, parks, and low-cost housing. Following the tradition, most projects were cancelled and nowadays only a handful of expensive condominiums and a golf course can be found in Kemayoran.
PART I - Aerial pictures6.1 As usual, we start with the satellite picture:

Edit 30/09/2008
Guys, I have finally to accept it and put this MD on hold. I am far too busy with RL to continue with this.
Please accept my apologies. I know I promised you that this MD would not be lost in time, but I guess I underestimated the projects I am currently embarked on. However, I shall keep all the files and maybe in the next months I will be able to resume .::Jakarta, Capital of Indonesia::.
I hope you have enjoyed it so far and you are now more interested in learning more about this fascinating city that is Jakarta.
Cheers,
DerWilly
Of course, you made me learn alot more about Jakarta, and can't wait for your next updates in next months ;) RLS is important than this, we understand ;D
Take care, until next time...
