LATEST UPDATE: 28.03 | My first city made on a Mac - and probably my last in Sterling.

The Sterling Regional Development
As the title suggest, this topic will feature the regional development of my new region. It's fresh. The only thing I've done with it, is making the N10 road through it.

I also started over again with my plugins folder. It's a lot like formatting your computer; the feeling of being born again, to start out with clean sheets. It's like the very first day of school - you have the opportunity to leave ten years later with A's only.

But the grim reality is of course that most of us have to settle with C's, at least when we're talking about school. But this time I can make my own curriculum (and set my own grades!), but I'd also very much appreciate your help and critisism.

Things to do
- Getting some help!
- A military base
- or maybe something that resembles a military base?

The birth of a city
Or rather the conceiving of some cities. The map isn't that big, 39x46 km (the Midgard map (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=16855&v=1) by HabLeUrG). But, for the sake of some "photo realism", I think three urban settlements are needed. Also, the region pics are some much nicer with some buildings scattered around.

The great thing about SimCity, and this map, is that there are room for a couple of smaller cities eventually joining together, in addition to a large international airport, a military base, some fishermen's villages, rural areas and so on.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25201%2Fregion.jpg&hash=52f4cf9b64e5a6d048033b55f214bf280cabce7f)
I'll start with adding urban areas in the red spots, and farms in appropriate locations in the vicinity. If the bad weather continues are the first results ready tomorrow.

Snow! I promised you a picture of the snow down here.

This is in the extreme south, where a snowfall is usually 10-20 cm. and over after a couple of hours. It has now been snowing for the last two days...

OMG - looks like you're not going anywhere today....

Holland comes to a standstill with 2cm of snow, I cannot imagine what this would ever cause here... We'll probably need the UN to disstress the country  ;)

Those look like some great places to start some urban development, but you'll have to make a connection from the N10 to the urban area dot in the northwest. Either way, I'll be looking forward to seeing how this develops!

Rural Areas
History 101
I haven't been able to do much the last days due to work, applications and the occasional power outages, but when we're looking at the history of Earth (we have to think big here), we see that the first agricultural communities were formed in present-day Iraq some 500 000 years ago. Farming (or "the gathering of food" as fisheries can be equally important) has formed the basis for all cultures througout time, and even today all great cities depend on the surrounding countryside for food supplies. The second world war was fought because of the idea of Lebensraum - literally "room to live in", in which arians should cultivate the vast areas between Germany and the Ural Mountains.

Cities have later been constructed both at strategic places and by natural resources, but farmland remain the most important factor for settlement.

Sterling is a brand new region. There are no natural resources in this small region apart from the Aral station about halfway between east and west along the N10 road, so everything is up to governor Johnnie Gordon (more on him later, if the audience are interested). But in order to see some reasonably sized cities on the areas marked red in the first update, we need to construct some "support towns" for the larger urban areas.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25203%2Fupd3-002.jpg&hash=4bbaff71c2698c104e883cf24ae7877fcf4d3acb)
The city of Withaker is surronded by farms - the centre consists of mostly R§-sims.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25203%2Fupd3-003.jpg&hash=6d168a73923959d2c8325db403e47b004ebd0441)
Downtown.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25203%2Fupd3-001.jpg&hash=9aec78bd1eed93cca0db54fca5e25c1cf09081a8)
The industrial centre of Withaker - still most of the goods come from the farms.

Withaker is located in the middle on the map with the red spots, thus moving the city further down the river. The population is about 2,200, and it has a railway connection to the north (which will be extended south later). There are still large, undeveloped areas in Withaker which can support even more farmland.

First development and the first downtown area, what can I say except: waiting for more....
Seems like a good strategy to start out like this with the farmland and smaller towns.

Love the degree of planning you have put into this.....I tend to try and grow regions this way, a collection of small agricultural towns/villages  that eventually end up supporting a larger metropolis....however...I tend to not plan ahead except in very general terms...which usually leads to more chaos than I wanted.  I will be following your story with great interest.....good luck and thanks so much for sharing.

Administrative centres
All regions have one or more administrative centres. Their functions varies wildly: Religion, military, commerce and civic services are all functions that can be either divided between several cities, or all gathered in the same.

Ashcroft is the administrative centre for the towns in the vicinity (only Withaker is currently founded [sadly]). As many centres, Ashcroft has been a planned city: a grid with squares of 4096 sq metres with civic services in the middle, commerce around it and residential areas around all this again.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25204%2Fupd4-007.jpg&hash=84aaf7500e557a1a06342d35fe08020f66a95138)
The grid is clearly visible, at this point the city had abou 8 000 inhabitants.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25204%2Fupd4-005.jpg&hash=bb93a9f84c63a5f447c89b6f1bf0a0789c487b5c)
The large commercial lots helped grow builidngs with realistic parking spaces.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25204%2Fupd4-002.jpg&hash=7849de386db214104f167ef091d066612eac4488)
The only R$$$-sims lived in this quarter before I started developing the city.

A large, new industrial area attracted more sims,

and a brand new neighbourhood soon attracted the richest sims in the region, including govenor Johnnie Gordon.

... or the old railway bridge.

Lastly, a pic of something seldom seen in vanilla SC4 - a riot! I had to use a mod though.

A new beginning
I felt the development of the region was going to fast - and also seemed a little unnatural, so I decided to start over again. For the moment, I have two small towns: Kempf, a small fishing village by the sea up north, and Kilburn, a little larger "general purpose" city by the sea at the western end.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25205%2Fupd5-001.jpg&hash=f296f61f6fceb83abc75bb3e45bd81bd0ddf505d)
The centre of Kempf, the harbour.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25205%2Fupd5-003.jpg&hash=37078bf4738d67e29b7b47ccb7468e166e7c9d45)
The rich sims lives just a couple of metres from the water in the old part of the town,

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25205%2Fupd5-004.jpg&hash=1173e8fb8a02f429b801a9ac4317195bde41f17b)
and the low to middle income citizen further from the sea in the new part.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25205%2Fupd5-002.jpg&hash=5ab5c8e05292af49d4f962e9e08e096bccca28a0)
There is a train line out of the city, and steam trains are still prevalent.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25205%2Fupd5-006.jpg&hash=2d7e4dfea737182677d1441ee88cd66af33c3e97)
Kilburn, a slightly larger town, is more cramped.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25205%2Fupd5-007.jpg&hash=40a8b3ef1264e14c415c2d2049756956c153d4b7)
Oh, those lovely rowhouses - have R$ ever been nicer?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25205%2Fupd5-005.jpg&hash=828e8559dc410634f2b7dfc23a9616ca317688d2)
I am sure I am missing some files for the textures of the standard Maxis industry buildings - anyone willing to help? By the way, the factory to the right is Porkies Pies, famous throughout the region.

I have also had a problem with DuskTrooper's No Maxis Mod. I would greatly appreciate any help on how to block R$ houses.

Thank you, and good night.

The first rural town
Since Biology isn't a part of this course, I've nothing interesting to add to these pictures of the new rural town I just made. You are free to enjoy the pictures of Oldenheide (any Germans seeing some mistakes with the name - please correct me!).

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25206%2Fupd5-005.jpg&hash=0595cf1d448d790b643b6c0bdc283b1371bed900)
The old part of town, with living quarters surrounded by farms.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25206%2Fupd5-004.jpg&hash=597741f9dd3501c814c264bf859bb8e7801782fa)
Riderhill Farm, owned by Mr. Riderhill. The farm is located some 4-500 metres from the town centre.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25206%2Fupd5-003.jpg&hash=e56ecb79d3dcc41a01b709e943d00e2d5b635e29)
The only industry you'll find in Oldenheide.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25206%2Fupd5-001.jpg&hash=a5879302664bc41311d14389f1f01a690d0e7510)
The new town. Note the pub in the left corner by the road.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi170.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu253%2Fsterling_regional_development%2Fupd%25206%2Fupd5-002.jpg&hash=662b2e681f5222459534408da2fd4f4ef479db4b)
Oldenheide went through quite a transformation as I took the pictures - here some new flats being constructed, due to land constraints - there are farms everywhere!

Help needed!
As you may have seen on some of the pictures in previous updates, I might miss a texture files. The problems are with original Maxis industrial lots. Please, show me the light someone!

You started all over again???
Well, your second start looks very nice so far, as I have said before I enjoy this kind of slowly growing towns and cities.

For the Maxis industrial missing textures... to me it seems more like you are missing some props.
But if you have installed the game they should all be there, maybe you have to change some settings in your game to make them show up. Futher than that I can't really help you.
Take a look in the LotEditor and open up some industrials, if there are textures or props without the names being displayed something is not right.

I noticed that you are missing some props on the Pegasus Seaport village lots, there should be a wooden front on the harbour pieces.

Great start of the city.

You changed a couple of things in the second towns. Not only the towns but also the water mod. That's a pity as the Maxis ingame one is..... YUCK!

As for the missing props. Did you download the Maxis Buildingprops volume 1 and 2?

krbe-  You are getting some good constructive feedback here, and it's nice to see folks pitching in to answer your questions.  If you'd be willing to listen to my 2 cents, here it is.

I think you might be a little too willing to just let stuff grow, without looking at the duplication that results.  There is a world of custom content out there, and no reason at all, unless done purposefully, to have two of the same buildings next to each other or, for that matter, in the same city.

...that last might be stretching things a bit.

The really fantastic cities in the MDs have a hand-placed look because... well, cause the stuff in them is generally placed by hand- purposefully chosen and individually sited.  You are developing your urbanized areas slowly enough where you would not be taking any major extra time to do this.  I guess it takes careful planning to achieve that entirely random RL look- never thought that one through before.

I'll certainly be looking over your shoulder every so often to see how things are going, and to keep up with SRD.

So far you've been given good advice.  I'm finding out that textures are, well, a pain.  Guess it can't be helped though.  Good luck with your MD.

I'm enjoying how your going 'slow,' to make everything right.  I'm no good at that.

Oh, welcome.

Dedgren, that is superb advice.....I had never really thought it all thruough before myownself.... It seems the towns I am happiest with are the ones with a great deal of "business" diversity......sometimes don't even think of plopping stuff :'( .... oh well...

krbe, am really looking forward to your next update....

Looking good. Working with mid density structures is hard, and you're really achiving some rather realistic results.

Just a question though: why is waterfront facing in towards the land?

Hi there. Little have happended with this MD the last weeks - I've been working alot, travelled a bit, but perhaps the most exciting thing is my new computer - I invested in a MacBook this weekend, as my old computer died. I'll try to migrate the region and plugins to this new machine, but since I only got the PC version of SC4, I'm afraid I have to install Windows on my computer (using 7.5 GB of the drive to Windows isn't ideal when the HDD only has 80 GB).

But fear not! Hopefully I'll have at least a small update by the end of the weekend (I need to see House and a couple of movies I missed since I was travelling last week [a word of advice: If you plan to go to Oslo, don't]).

Thank you, and good night.

Wow! What a change! Previously, I used a HP Pavilion notebook, with a 1,6 GHz processor and 768 MB RAM - upgrading to a MacBook 2 GHz Dual Core and 1024 MB RAM really changed my gaming experience! Finally, everything runs smoothly, on full graphics settings. While the years really lagged before, and I didn't make it to the end of year 50 on any city, I came to 150 on my first city! Below are the images of Jobsville, my first city on my new computer - all made the last three hours (I'm sorry the city layout isn't very good. I'm still undecided what to do with the region, as I feel I have the ability to "connect" the cities much better than before).

A pristine city

The old town, before I decided to put in a high-rise residential and commercial area

The motorway cross leading in to the new parts of the city

The crossing in the old part, destroying much of the original settlements

THe city with the new commercial and residential area to the left, the old city in the middle and a new commercial area in the old industrial area

As said, I'm a bit unsure wether to continue on Sterling - I feel the region has become too big for me, and I believe I'll go for something smaller. A region with space for a big city, some suburbs, a few farms, an airport, a large industrial area - I think I'll rather go for that in the future.

ok that's a hard shove into another direction. lol would love to see how you go on with this. i don't think i've ever seen so much one way roads in an MD/CJ before so that would be something new.  :P congrats, again on the new hardware and performance.  :P

I would have to say that this is a huge leap forward. I liked your earlier work too, but this looks MUCH better in my opinion. Waiting for more with great interest.
