Title: Tag's Residential Projects
Post by: tag_one on October 15, 2008, 04:26:28 AM
Hi there,
In this topic I'll show and discuss my latest residential projects. Please feel free to comment or give advice!

Let's start with my newest building. It's going to become a 36 story R$$$ building. The lotsize will be 2x2. I hope you like this special tower.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.freeimagehosting.net%2Fuploads%2Fc5c85731b9.jpg&hash=0a77a730e291edeab28a4b3c44a517475fc10dc4) (http://www.freeimagehosting.net/)

I'm currently working on its nightlights. I hope to have a picture of that by tomorrow. Anyway tell me what you think about my newest tower  :)

Ah - what a fun looking building. I see that Tag-One is putting the game back into the game.

Jim, thanks. I wanted to experiment with different shapes and SC4 is an excellent way to do so.  :)

Geronimo I know, imageshack is slow again. I re-uploaded the picture to freeimagehosting.net, much faster so now you should see the picture without a problem  :)

Anyway I couldn't concentrate on my homework so I finished the nightlights:

Hope you like purple  :D

Lol, why in the world this sounds just so pretty familiar to me?  ::) $%Grinno$%

Good work in this one, very original design (I'd concur Jim's comment  :P) and I like the purple. Makes this one stand out even more, but in a very positive way.

Today I was messing around a bit on my PC and found an old render of a half finished building. After a little search I found the model as well. I couldn't remember working on it, but I liked its look so I decided to finish it. I only had to finish the roof junk and the night lights :)
Here's a picture of the building that almost went lost in the dungeons of my computer  :D

Thanks pat!

Here's another building I accidentally made:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fxs537.xs.to%2Fxs537%2F09120%2Ftwo_towers924.jpg&hash=3d433da5f40cc889c18e5225a5260a0b7cad32c0) (http://xs.to)

I planned to make it a CS$$ but I accidentally dragged the building to R$$ in PIMX. No big deal imo, it became a nice residential tower. I rendered another the model for the CS one and re-rendered this one to get rid of all the CS stuff. Worked out pretty well don't you think?

Hi all, I made a new building today. It's a bit different from my other projects as it's an old New York style R$ apartment building  ;)

Thanks for the comments guys, they are much appreciated! I 4 new buildings with some small shops on street level. I also changed the design of the buildings a bit to make them look more real. Here's a images from a small ghetto I build with my newest bats. I add some more commercial banners on the building as it's a bit bare compared to the real thing.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F8048%2Fghettou.jpg&hash=acc7ffb3ad60c5a2db9fdc89d866bcc68f23c774) (http://img23.imageshack.us/my.php?image=ghettou.jpg)

I'll make some more versions later today. My plan is to put them in beta somewhere next week :)

oh and btw. what do guys think of my traffic light props? They are my first HD props ;D

looking great there tag an BTW where did you get that traffic light...
Title: Re: Tag's Residential Projects
Post by: j-dub on May 10, 2009, 03:04:31 PM
They look like Elliot Hansons, but I don't think he went public with those as T21's, and these clearly have more detail.
Title: Re: Tag's Residential Projects
Post by: tag_one on May 11, 2009, 10:51:54 PM
Thanks for your comments Patrick and J-dub! I made the traffic lights myself :) I'm still working on some more traffic lights for other intersection, so it will take a while before this is being released. On the other hand, it just one T21 per intersection, so it much less work than the street intersection mod I made.
The traffic lights are rendered as HD props btw, for the buildings I thing SD will be fine  :)

Title: Re: Tag's Residential Projects
Post by: tag_one on June 07, 2009, 05:04:04 AM
Chris, Thanks for your reply and your PM. I'm progressing quite slowly with the traffic lights. This because the lights on the one way roads have some issues. The direction of the one way roads seem to be separated from the lot exemplar. This means that the traffic lights won't change 'turn around' if the direction of the one way roads is changed. I'll have to find a solution for that, as it now looks a bit odd in the game.

Neofita Thanks for your reply. Don't worry about your English, you're doing fine :) The ghetto buildings are now in beta. They will be released somewhere next week.

Can someone say released? =P

The buildings aren't really my style unfortunately... I was thinking of some more low-income non-market housing that cities typically build today. The Maxx does fill a role but a few more wouldn't hurt I think.

I love the look of those ghetto buildings, we definitely need more. However, one thing I noticed whilst playing was that they seem to be a bit off scale. They're larger than the surrounding buildings. Don't let me stump your BATting though, we need these R$ buildings! Though for my personal taste the difference in scale is a problem.

Keep up the good work!
Title: Re: Tag's Residential Projects
Post by: tag_one on June 13, 2009, 03:21:46 AM
Allan Kuan, Thanks for your reply. At the moment I'm only batting old NY styled ghetto buildings. However I'm planning to do some modern ones as well.

Howling, Thanks. It's indeed possible that these buildings are taller than the buildings of other creators. In SC4 sims are about 4 meters tall, so therefor I and many other batters use a ceiling height between to 5 and 7 meters per floor. Unfortunately there are still many batters who use a normal ceiling height of about 3 meter. Next to these buildings my stuff will indeed look odd.

Post by: allan_kuan1992 on June 19, 2009, 06:34:12 PM
Well that can be expected... large lots don't grow as easily as small ones...

Speaking of which... I've seen Little Asia Apartments overgrow Paloma Towers for some mysterious reason (come on residential simulators... they're both almost the same and yet the Palomas still gets overgrown due to like 10 extra people or something in the two Asia towers combined) >.< And both grow in extreme overkill in many of my cities. One of my newest cities therefore relies mainly on huge mega-lot developments instead.

But anyway, back to topic. Any news to share?

surrus-ginagi, don't worry, your not rude at all! I always like it when I see my building in someones city, so your pictures are more then welcome ;)

Allan Kuan, I haven't experienced that yet, but I do sometimes get a nice row of them. Maybe I should create some others to create a bit of a variety... :D

ATM I've started at ghetto pack vol2. I'm now browsing the Bronx in google streetview to get some inspiration. If someone has some nice RL ghetto pictures, don't hesitate to post them  :)

That's ok, Merijn :). I hope you'll at least publish the traffic lights with proper OW arrows - you can always make overhanging / network enabled lots.

Glad to hear you're starting to walk along the Bronx streets . And thanks for publishing pack one. I hope someday I'll be able to test it... :).

Hi there, apart from a industrial and some other things I started with Ghetto Pack 2. This pack will contain some larger R$ buildings. I got my inspiration mostly from building blocks in the Bedford area of the Bronx.
here's the first one:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg269.imageshack.us%2Fimg269%2F1318%2Fbronx2.jpg&hash=07ac0215a38a74bf0d139a173c45e5666534a5e6) (http://img269.imageshack.us/i/bronx2.jpg/)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg118.imageshack.us%2Fimg118%2F8207%2Fbronx1b.jpg&hash=21f1a75e442ce3a72e3d52b25c9c886e21bb67d7) (http://img118.imageshack.us/i/bronx1b.jpg/)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg10.imageshack.us%2Fimg10%2F5756%2Fbronx3.jpg&hash=aae23b97ad0f6937db3769205cfdcbb653612f46) (http://img10.imageshack.us/i/bronx3.jpg/)

The street level floor in the picture is actually the basement level. The building will be slopefriendly for soft and medium slopes :)

I'll make some more color variations soon.
What you guys think of it?

Actually in the ghetto you may see the same buildings again. In this case Tag, you could do that same building again but not the same graffiti. Actually I did have Maxis buildings make ugly giant blocks of ghetto once in my city. It seems if you do medium density not too far from industrial the game somehow in a weird way makes a ghetto neighborhood in those colors.

What he said. :) A few of them maybe, slightly different, in a prop family would make a nice addition to the game - esp. since it's a midrise, which are rarely BATted by anyone.

citycapitalizer, Thanks!

j-dub , Thanks! From a distance it indeed looks like the same building is build over and over again. But if you look closer you can see differences in brickwork and details on the buildings. Like this:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi281.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fkk210%2Fdtoronto2008%2Fc1988.jpg&hash=0b246b293179d15cd97216d31f216b50198ffb20)

This is also what I'm planning to to in my ghetto packs :)

Andreas, Thanks! I'm planning to do quite a few of them with different details and some color variations.

I've been working again on this project and I finished another building. This building has beige textures instead of dirty brickwork (in case you didn't noticed :D). It also has a small chimney on the side of the building. Here's a picture:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg200.imageshack.us%2Fimg200%2F5466%2Fghetto2.jpg&hash=2875fe5760dd2842338f65ba120a4628ad9b3fa0) (http://img200.imageshack.us/i/ghetto2.jpg/)

At the moment I've only 1 R$ lot done with a building family on it. I'll make some more lots so that there's a bit of variation between the plants and the garbage :)

Looks good!  One minor idea; to make a more subtle variation, pretend the builder made a mirror image of the floor plan.  Most of the building would look the same, but minor details would flip; say the elevator access on the roof would be on the other side, and the main entrance would be flipped.  Subtle changes that might work.

QuoteHere are the first ingame shots from the buildings. The three buildings I rendered grew nicely next to each other:

Ahh.. so you got all three variations to grow side by side?  Nice!  May earn a new nick name "BAT tamer" ...  :D

I love the buildings, but I'm not so sure about the lots. I would suggest a more urban looking lot, with alleyways, dumpsters, etc. The forest look doesn't quite fit in with the ghetto environment.

That picture, the second in game one actually seals the deal that it is a bad neighborhood in SimCity. I think for the lots, the grass texture needs to be duller, for that matter we have Maxis textures that would actually work in this situation to purposely make these lots look bad, but in reality you may just see cracked asphalt at the bottoms of these buildings, but a texture that would compromise it with being ghetto and keep the plants would be that dull mud texture Maxis supplied in the Lot Editor. I don't know the exact ID's, just what they look like. The first picture with the lively trees is very uncommon, the second one where the trees are deader seems right. So, back to Lot Editing, to resolve the nice looking ground issues, there also are prop families of garbage such as dumpsters, bags, and stripped/wrecked cars that are vital for these lots. There also is the chalked body one, which I will see that building after building in some of my cities. Those should all be in the Lot Editor already.

Post by: Andreas on July 16, 2009, 02:33:36 AM
Well, even in a run-down area, the trees shouldn't be affected by the decay. ;) On the contrary, you might see trees and bushes everywhere, slowly growing over the development, as nature is taking back what was once taken from it.
Title: Re: Tag's Residential Projects
Post by: joelyboy911 on July 16, 2009, 03:00:53 AM
Yes, Andreas, but its really for effect. :P

It makes the whole place look distressed and somewhat decrepit, like even the plants wouldn't want to live near that. It looks hideous - Well Done!

These ghettoes look superb.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I relotted the lot and added a more urban feeling to it:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg140.imageshack.us%2Fimg140%2F6752%2Fghetto1d.jpg&hash=533fe01eee789ecd4ac71d791f340aadc7059b4c) (http://img140.imageshack.us/i/ghetto1d.jpg/)

I haven't used the maxis dirt textures as I didn't liked them much. I think this industrial concrete texture will do the job as well :)

Ah yes, those lots fit a lot better indeed. I like the dense bushes and trees along the lot border in particular - perfect flora that doesn't seem to be maintained at all.

There seems to be a glitch with your buildings, though. Look at the area where the facade touches the ground: it's not a straight line, but it looks "fretted". Maybe due to the method you used to make them slope-friendly? It wasn't that apparent on the grass lots, but on the new ones, it really stands out.

Thanks Andreas! The glitch is because of the custom LODs for the building. To show the basement level without too much annoying glitches I covered the building in custom LODs. I didn't want to give the LOD too much poly's so the shape for the emergency stairs goes all the way down. This causes the small glitch you noticed. These glitches are underneath all the stairs. On the street side I covered them with garbage. In the back I didn't because I didn't found the look of it annoying. It looks a bit like an airshaft for the basement windows. But if you and other don't like it, I'll place some props on it :)

Well, there are probably ways to reduce those glitches, but I'm not a BATter, so I can't provide any hints on that, unfortunately. Maybe someone else has an idea. But as you said, it's probably sufficient to place a few props there (dumpsters, bushes etc.) for hiding the worst parts (i. e. the building corner above the dog house).

The ghetto lots look great... but I've got to be honest, I think they were more realistic the other way...!  "common" land like that is often underutilized and I can't really see people trusting others with their stuff out on the line...

but I digress!  It looks great BOTH ways!

Love your stuff, but in my cities, I could enter one Paloma Tower and see about five of them from the windows. They grow like wildfire.

Someone should create similar buildings (same height, occupancy) but different styling to compete with the Paloma Tower.

Thanks for the kind comments everybody  :) I finished the pack and uploaded it for scrutineering on the private LEX. The pack will be uploaded on the public LEX soon  ;)

Tracker Yeah I know, I face the same thing in my cities. Paloma and the little Asia Condo's have taken over most of my neighborhoods. I'm planning to make some new towers, but first I want to finish my ghetto project and some more I-ht buildings :)

oehh triple post ::)

I was kind of bored today and not really in the mood for batting a new building or modding something. So I decided to play a bit with the lot editor. Here's the result:

Looks very .. ummm .. flowery.. :)
I remember when i was a kid (LONG time ago) there were always some old ladies (always old) who grew TONS of flowers all over the yard.. usually the house was very unassuming .. rundown even, and the yard was JAMMED with em.. looked and smelled good all summer tho.. I guess that's what little old ladies did before they started collecting 90 cats or whatever.. :)

Time for something new :)
For quite some time I've been working on low density timber frame buildings. I tried many different things and I think they finally reached a state were they are presentable.
Here's the first batch, a family of 9 timber frame R$ homes. Although the shape of the buildings are the same, their textures are different on each building (roof, walls and window frames). They'll grow on 3 lots with different prop families so you'll get a nice variation. Here some images:

And I made some CS$'s as well:

Hope you like them :)

Well - well - well! What do we have here? Some nicely done slope friendly buildings if you ask me.

I like the roof textures. The joins of the roof material are subtle and not distracting. There is a right amount of dirty-ness too. The walls are obviously white but do not glare due to the in game lighting. Overall the texturing is about as good as it can get and you should be proud of your effort.

I like the lots and your use of CycleDog's base textures. I am curious about the dirt overlays you used in the front yard areas. Are there a lot of dirt drive ways in your part of the Netherlands???

Cheers - Jim Myers

B_schlurf, thanks! I'm actually cheating a bit since I made those building in November last year. Didn't had the time to finish it and forgot about it. I found those buildings some time ago when I was doing a cleanup of the 6 development plugins folder I have  ::)

Carlos, Thanks I'm glad to hear you like them!

Jacqulina Thank you!

SimNation Thanks, I love both European and New York styled buildings a lot :)

Jack Thanks!

Jim Thanks, the wall textures took quite a lot of time. It took me about 15 renders to  get this result. Thankfully 3DS Max renders these buildings in less than a minute ::)
These kind of buildings are actually quite uncommon in the Netherlands. As we have a lot of clay in our soil most buildings, including the old ones, are build with bricks. Those timber frame buildings are normally found in countries like Germany. Personally I'll change some of the overlay textures in brick ones, as dirt driveways become less common nowadays. I just needed a placeholder to see how the buildings grew in the game ;)

Eloa people! It's been a couple of months again since the last time I was active. But I've got some ghetto candies again :D Life is busy but good here. I think I can slowly say that I left a very dark and gritty period behind me. Unfortunately for you all it means I hardly got time to do modeling work or be active over here. Spend most of my tume on a busy social life and messing around with girls :P Anyway here's a new public housing project I'm working on. I also made 21 story highrise version of it, but that one still needs some texturing and nightlighting.

It's good to see you again, Merijn.  The community's really starting to hop again, and it's good that your RL is going good again.  :)

Somehow, I never remembered you doing residential buildings, so it's a pleasant surprise to me to see one here.  I like the dilapidated brick texture and the windows.  Our medium-density R-ยง areas could always use a little variety.  I suppose the tall version could work for denser areas.  Welcome back, Merijn!

Hi Merijn,

Yes, good to see you active again.
In the past I myself lived through some messing around with girls too and especially the not so funny half of it can take a lot of energy.
Anyway, it brought me my beloved wife, so it all came to a good end.

Your building looks great!
