Based on the code of SC4Config, I am currently developing a software to configure the NAM. It's goal is to replace the plugin files that are used to configure the NAM by choosing one in each directly, to emulate LOTs that may conflict with NAM exemplars and to make custom tunnel entrances availlable. Most SC4Config settings are removed and the possibilities are nearly reduced to the settings of the NAM includes.

Now, the exemplar export has to be adjusted and the output plugins have to be tested well.
Great !
Very nice
@Wouanagaine: The language list has a problem displaying "français" (the ç). There is a codification error (shows two letters). Do you know how to fix this? Each line needs a different encoding (including japanese)
Is it Mac only?
Mac OS, Windows and all X11-based desktops.
goaskin, this looks mighty interesting, is it going to be closed source?

Try to use the code page cp1140
It must be open source because if the used framework (QT) requires that (or to buy a license). Anyhow, there is no reason why freeware sources should be closed.

PUBLIC BETA...
Download this preview if you want to search for bugs, to test and use a Mac.

Please do not download if using Windows. A windows preview will follow soon.
If you are QT developer and have a static version of QT 4 (not 4.4!) for windows installed, please PM me!
I'll take a look :)
How do you work now, do you use bootcamp then? Or do you have a seperate Windows PC?
I don't have any windows at the moment. That's the problem. Some one else must recompile the code for Windows. This public-BETA is Mac-Only.
Mac only, eh? Very unusual... This almost qualifies as "mental whiplash" but not quite - most every SC4-related program out there is either Windows-only or it works on either one... That's too bad you can't get the code for a Windows beta... I'd like to try it.
The code produces a Windows binary well (and Linux too). But to compile it in a virtual machine takes days. I have a PPC mac that only runs windows in virtual machines (as fast as on an early pentium). To compile it, first I have to build QT (around 200MB sourcecode) and then the program itself. I know some users who may build the source under Windows but they don't always have the time.
If you want to do it yourself
* install MINGW or MS visual studio
* download the QT source version 4.3.5 at www.trolltech.com
* compile it with the options -static -release -fast
* compile the namconfig source
I will offer the sourcecode later.
uh, I have a working version of QT 4.4.3 already installed, would that work?
Joe
QT 4.4 may work but binaries become much larger than with version 4.3. Do you have static or dynamic QT? That means, do the programs depend on installed DLL or is the DLL content linked into the binary? Here is the actual source. Hope this provider will work (yousendit is currently down).

The EXE must be copied into the NAM folder. There, the automata plugins, traffic simulators, and all the plugin files that are in the Plugins folder from the source have to be removed from the NAM. The source tree does not contain the tunnel models DAT. I will attach it to this thread later.

Find a program that is able to mount dmg images (I think must CD-burning softwares do...)
This version is able to save the location of the NAM folder, so you don't need to put the program on a fixed place. But you must still remove the automata and traffic plugins from your NAM folder to make it work properly. Furthermore the railroad viaduct style and custom menu DATs to make it selectable from the program.
JeanLucPicard2 made a windows build. I uploaded it to the SFBT testcenter (nam folder). Feel free to test it. If there are two DLLs missing, please download the MS visual runtime! This is a debug version (that's why it has 5.2MB). I will attach it to this forum when I have a few responses from internal testers.
I have downloaded the file from the LEX but the Readme is not recognised as an HTML document and there are no instructions on how/where to install it and how to use it. These are a minimum for LEX uploads so can you please address this urgently or I shall have to lock the file until you do?
I have locked the Windows version until you update this. I cannot check the Mac version so will leave that unlocked unless I hear to the contrary. This looks a very useful tool but I haveno idea how to use it properly. Please address the issues in my previous post and re upload.
I downloaded Goaskin's NAM Tool (Windows version) before it was locked and I tested it. The present Windows version has several important bugs and should NOT be used !!! If you tested the NAM Tool Windows version, it is likely that your NAM implementation was damaged. There is no undo except deleting the NAM folder and re-installing the NAM April 2008 version from scratch.
In principle, the tool looks quite interesting, but presently it does not hold its promises due to the significant bugs. I will discuss them with Goaskin in the German Simforum.
Disclaimer: Goaskin's NAM tool was developed and uploaded by Goaskin. The NAM-Team was not involved at all.
Thanks for this, Chrisim. I am disappointed that Goaskin hasn't returned here to look for my posts. He made a comment in the upload comments that it had been locked with no message from an Admin ::) He obviously doesn't check his thread.
Do we know if the Mac version will also cause problems? Maybe I should lock that too.
As both are compiled from the same source (probably) both will contain the same bugs.

There is a good chance that the Mac version works fine, because he has a Mac. I cannot verify. There is a difference between the NAM distribution for Windows (via installer that installs the required files only) and for Mac (a zip file that installs all files and the user has to move certain files for adaption). Good chance that it works fine for Mac.
My remarks concern the Windows version only. I don't see a reason to lock the Mac version, at least not without feedback from Mac users.
GoaSkin hinted that he uploaded the tool to the LEX in order to get a wider distribution, so there would be more feedback (and test reports). Apparently, he didn't recognize that the LEX is supposed for finished items, rather than public beta tests. The release was as a complete surprise for me as well, esp. since the first functional Windows version was only released a few days ago here in the forums.
I have locked both versions until I hear from Goaskin or someone else that this is fit for distribution. I have also temporarily suspended Goaskin's uploader rights to the LEX.
收下 謝謝囉
I will release an updated version on Saturday. But if nobody explains me the Windows bugs, I don't know how to fix them. You said, that the icon orders and the viaduct style becomes wrong. But how does it become wrong. The program does nothing else with it except rewriting the original plugin files into the Configuration subfolder in the NAM dir if the checkboxes are checked, based on the real plugin files and not on re-assembled ones. Re-assembled are just the traffic and automata plugins and the network configurations.
I found a bug. When exporting the plugin files, the path where to save is ignored for a strange reason. It worked in the past but on the latest builds, it is ignored but nothing has been changed on this section. So, it saves the DATs into the folder of the EXE instead the configuration subdir of the NAM. It works for the configuration DAT what is handled differently because it is assembled dynamicly.
This project has been anounced in late September, so the NAM team should be informed about it. The versions for the April NAM will not be a part of the NAM. The tool should be included for future versions into the NAM itself but not for the released ones.
It has been tested for weeks by sending download links to various forums with daily builds of it and when nobody reported bugs, I thought it is stable enough to release.
I hope the bug/s can be fixed quickly and an updated version is soon available again. If the release is a beta or a RC then it should be advised in the download information as well. It is strongly suggested that only final RC's or finished products are uploaded to the LEX btw ;)
The bug has been fixed. The last version was RC2 and the next one will be RC3. The testers of the RC2 haven't found the errors that the downloaders have found, so I released it because there weren't anymore bugfix requests.
An update will follow on saturday.
Btw. still looking for translators (for any language a windows version exists for)
Please PM me, if you want to translate 108 lines of text (mostly single words) to support another language.
Actually, the program supports english, german, traditional and simplified chinese and partially spanish.
I downloaded the Mac version from the LEX before it was locked, and it just didn't work. (double clicked the icon, it would start to open, then immediately close).
I will release separate PPC and Intel versions later. Maybe, your installation does not support PPC emulation.
But to find out more about the error, can you please try to run it from command line by going into NamConfig.app/Contents/MacOS and then to run ./namconfig ? May be, there is an error message that gives an hint.
i can translate to Dutch, but i will be away till monday. so if you send it to me, you can have it on tuesday.
Thnx... I may send you the translation source later. Some one else wanted to do it but I don't have got any result from him. I will ask him if he still wants to do it and if not, I will send it to you.

Please test, if the bugs have been solved. Tomorrow, I am going to publish the windows version.
It opens now, but some documentation would be nice, because I have some questions that I'm sure a simple readme could answer. For example what does the "mod emulation" option do? What does the "load" button do (or why doesn't it do what I think it should)?
I have a documentation to write - as HTML document. I started one but damaged it because somehow I cut most parts of the text exactly before saving. But a quick help should appear when hovering the cursor over any group field.

Mac Version is updated on the LEX.
Now, it isn't required anymore to place the tunnel-DAT in the NAM subfolder. This version includes a small enhancement to the original NAM: Volume Data View and P&R is availlable for all simulators.
Whe Windows version will follow soon...
Windows version is also updated: http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1914
This is the first version I could look at in a while - the others kept expiring on me before I could download them. :(
A few comments: Under "other settings," I assume that the clean air ordinance you refer to is the revised version present in Simulator Z, as we discussed. This isn't in your documentation anywhere, so there's no way for people to know what it does, or even that it's not the standard Clean Air Ordinance. I'd recommend updating your documentation here, and also adding the word "revised" or "new" in front of "clean air ordinance."
Most importantly, the Congestion Data View appears to be the one released a year ago by the NAM team. This view is completely broken, always gives erroneous results, and never works properly with any traffic simulator. This is why it is not present in the January 2009 NAM. No one should ever use it.
Personally, I don't think the pathfinding heuristic belongs in this program. The effects of its settings are highly interlinked with a number of other settings in the traffic simulator that aren't present here. Also, its effects are highly nonlinear, and fully understood by a relatively small number of people. In general, people who know enough to change this setting properly would use Ilive's Reader, where it can be coordinated with its other related settings. If you do keep this setting, which I don't recommend, it would be a good idea to set its minimum at .003, as anything lower than that is detrimental to the performance of all traffic simulators.
Other than that, I like the program. :) I think it is most useful for the user interface settings, making it much easier to change them than it would otherwise be. I also like the way it makes it very easy to switch traffic simulator capacities or versions. So I think most of it is fine, but there a few points left that still need work.
EDIT: After checking further, I also noticed that if one of my custom Traffic Volume Views is present, and the traffic simulator capacity or version is changed, the Traffic Volume View is not changed. These always need to be changed in tandem; otherwise, the Traffic Volume View will display erroneous colors and percentages.
All the static plugin content is taken from the Macintosh version of the Januar NAM. Either it is my fault and the system did not overwrite the container files or the Mac NAM is not similar to the windows download or the NAM I used was too early.
The heuristic I may disable - no problem. Saves space for other controls.
So please say me which current values must be set to which value! Thanks.

So please say me which current values must be set to which value! Thanks.
I'm not sure what you mean here. Could you please elaborate?
The tool is currently being actualized for the June NAM. All the values will be adjusted to values currently used in the NAM.
A version which is compatible to the June NAM (and July update) will be finished soon. A preview version can be found in the test center (no Macintosh build yet).
There are translation source files added to this posting.
Is there someone who can complete me the french translation? (for this, open the SC4Ctrans_fr.ts in a text editor)?
The spanish translation also needs to be a little bit modified.
I just took a look at the preview version, and I have a few comments.
The most important thing I want to stress is that the traffic simulators exist as integral constructions. Tuning them really shouldn't be attempted by anyone other than experts. To have their parameters available in a program used by ordinary players is only going to create trouble for the players and will also create additional support problems.
For example, in my previous message in this thread, I strongly recommended removing the pathfinding heuristic setting. At this point, I would make this recommendation even stronger. Experience has shown that setting it to any value other than 0.003 essentially breaks Simulator Z. Simulators A and B are built around their own value of this parameter, which shouldn't be changed for them, either. I would request in the strongest terms that this setting be removed from the NAM Tool. Supporting the standard Simulator Z both here and at ST is enough work; I could not support nonstandard variations of this simulator. As for Simulators A and B, active support for them is limited at best; the last entry in their Help thread is from last November 5th.
Under "other settings," "clean air ordinance" should be removed. It is an integral part of Simulator Z and should always be present. On the other hand, it has never been a part of Simulators A and B, and no one has requested it. There is no one to deal with the support issues if it is introduced into these simulators and causes problems.
Similarly, the "volume data view" should not be an option here. As of the June release, it is a mandatory part of the NAM for all traffic simulators, and also contains exemplars governing more than just volume data, such as the Subway and Subway Building views. New features in RTMT that are being released depend on these features, and will break if they are not present. Similarly, there is consideration in the NAM of extending the RTMT features to other transit stations in general, but this requires the presence of the features in the volume data views. They should be considered a mandatory part of the NAM. They should also be considered permanently linked to their respective traffic simulators, as they are during the NAM installation, and should be updated whenever the traffic simulator is.
The zone data view is a little more complicated. It really belongs with the other data views. Although it is shown in an option in the NAM installation, the default has been changed to "on," which is what I had recommended initially. Since it is designed to fit in with the other data views and there have been no problems with it, I expect that in the not-too-distant future, it will lose its optional status, and just automatically be installed like the other new data views. For this reason, I would strongly recommend removing it as an option from the NAM tool as well.
That leaves Park and Ride. Although it's fine to have it as a selection here, I should point out that a large portion of Simulator Z support problems come when people select this option and they don't know what it does. If you are going to keep this option, it is essential that there be some sort of warning right next to it that this option significantly changes the behavior of the traffic simulator, and people need to read the documentation before choosing it.
On the other side of things, you might want to add a Bullet Train option, which would allow people to choose the Bullet Train version of Simulator Z. But as with Park and Ride, there needs to be a prominent warning that this option fundamentally changes the behavior of the traffic simulator.
I'll look forward to hearing back from you on these requests. :)
But the NAM comes with a large list of Volume Data View Plugins belonging to different Simulators. If Volume Data View is activated, a different plugin file is saved depending on the selected simulator.
For AB NetworkAddonMod_Volume_Data_View_AB_Medium.dat, for Z NetworkAddonMod_Volume_Data_View_Z_Medium.dat etc.
For the clean air ordinance I thought that it's functionality does not depend on any specific simulator.
Well... I will make some modifications later.

Yes, this is completely correct. The plugins are tuned to the capacity of each simulator. My point was simply that Volume Data View must
always be activated, as it is in the NAM installation; otherwise, various things in the new NAM will break.

Technically, this is true. But the overall functionality of Simulator Z depends on the presence of my modified version of this ordinance. If you turn it off, what you're left with is no longer Simulator Z - it definitely will not function as well. Theoretically, you could make this an option for Simulators A and B, but you'd have to explain in detail exactly how it's different from the standard Clean Air Ordinance, and what the implications are. And you'd have to make sure that this ordinance was always present for Simulator Z. Personally, I don't think it's work all the trouble to do this, but that's your call... :)
I have upgraded the source code...
* the zone data view defaults to be turned on
* the pathfinding heuristic slider isn't removed yet but deactivated (greyed out). That is temporarily an easy solution because removing it completely requires many changes in the source code.
* 50% of the strings have been translated into french (still looking for a native speaker)
* the clean air ordinance option has been removed. The Exemplar is now beeing created dynamicl<
* volume data view greyed out and activated (same as above)
I have currently a few other things to do and will start to compile and repack it later.
test version has been actualized in download center
Please upgrade to version 1.3.1!
Thanks for taking my suggestions! It's much appreciated. ;)
Does anybody know if changes have been made in the old simulators (C, D and E)? I cannot find anything but the files included in the NAM have a newer date.
They haven't changed, and I don't know why they show a newer date on your system. Here's how the ZIP file with the June 2009 NAM should look like:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg379.imageshack.us%2Fimg379%2F3433%2Fnamtrafficplugins.gif&hash=f3c7fc0e814d44a6d10bdb6f3cabfd61c43e5115) (http://img379.imageshack.us/i/namtrafficplugins.gif/)
That isn't what I mean...
They show a date from march 09, a date after the January 2009 NAM release. But these simulators are very old and do exist much longer than the NAM itself. There haven't been any changes on it since many years. So, possibly there were changes made in march 09 or the date has been renewed for another reason.
I don't know which changes have been made in March, if the files are identical to the January 2009 version, it's probably only the filedate that got changed accidentially.

I saw some anomalies in other parts of the tool, but since it was an early version, I didn't worry about them at the time. In any case, I think your latest build needs to be tested out a bit before releasing. I'm a bit busy right now, but later this week I should have some time.

I wouldn't rely on a mechanical tool for translating more than one word completely accurately, and definitely not when you have to split a word like this. Those translations might be correct, but I think we need to hear from a fluent speaker of those languages to know for sure.

The literal translation of the French one would be: Path of the Finders, which is wrong. Since Barby is French, perhaps she can give the correct translation?

Barby is not French, but only lives there. ;) There are quite a few French users here, though, they should be able to find a better translation. If you haven't done so, post a translation request at SC4D's French subforum.
And since she lives there, I assume that she speaks French, though she isn't a native speaker. And apart from posting a request in the French Sub-forum, I suggest you also place on in the Translations request forum and the Spanish forum, as I don't think the Spanish translation is much better then the French one.
Regards,
Korot
Pathfinding (in this case) is a technical expression also used for route calculations on navigation systems. For this case, every language has a different expression that may not be based on the words path and finding.
In German (possibilities): Routenberechnung (route calculation), Wegsuche (path search), Zielsuche (destination search)
In the dutch NAM tool translation: routevinder (route finder)

I use "Wegfindung" most times, as it is rather short and relatively close to the original. "Routenberechnung" isn't bad as well, this is the usual term that would show up in a navigation device. :)
Can someone help me? When I clicked for the Japanese train tunnel and the SC2k road tunnels to be in game, All I see is those "black holes" is there a dependancy? If so, can some1 post it. Thanks in advance
There is a bug in the January version. The tunnel plugin does not contain the models of the japanese tunnel.

I believe that's a private area of the site...so if you don't have permission, you're SOL.
About the translations I gave, again, I don't speak Spanish or French fluently enough to know whether they were right or wrong, I just did my best with what I had.
OK... it is the private download area but I thought if the system puts out an hyperlink, this is reachable for everyone.
This link should work (via yousendit)

To save space in future versions, do you prefer a tab bar like here:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg387.imageshack.us%2Fimg387%2F536%2Ftabbar.th.jpg&hash=32277ab66064116e66716930b2b0b1769beaf2e3) (http://img387.imageshack.us/i/tabbar.jpg/)
or another solution?
+ wizard
+ stacked widget
+ small overlay windows (like in Photoshop)
would be the alternatives.
Tabs look good :)
A wizard would be nice for the first-time (as it would be like the NAM installer)
Joe
Wizard for first-time use and after a new NAM is installed sounds good, with tabs the rest of the time.
I think the tab bar looks good - this is just what I had in mind.
For the Simulator Z settings, there would need to be a complementary wizard, and people could choose "wizard" or "expert" mode. But wizard mode (which would be the initial default) could be chosen at any time, as in many existing programs.
As I mentioned in my PM to you, the Simulator Z wizard mode is going to take some design work before it's ready for implementation. But it sounds like the whole idea of a wizard mode would be popular throughout the tool.
monorail type has been moved to the general settings because choosing bethween monorail, hsr and bullet train is also necessary for the tunnel and slope settings.
I like the tabs a lot - makes everything less cluttered, and you can group options that belong together nicely. For the traffic plugin configuration (esp. for first-time run after the NAM installation, or for novice users), a wizard would be great as well. I agree with z that some discussion about the design is necessary, but I'm sure we could work out the details.
I have to agree that the Tab setting is a better enviroment for me. Easier to organize options like others have said. :)
