INTRODUCTION

What is it?!? The River Region of Braska is an area that is developed closed to a historical representation of the Midwest in the United States. What exactly does a historical representation mean? Well due to the lack of custom content, for the early 19th century the buildings and cars being all over the place will be a little out of context BUT I will try to follow as much as I can with the period following limitations to the game. This means that skyscrapers NOT going to be around for a long while. Trains NOT going to be around for a short while. Paved roads NOT going to be around for a while etc...

Some of you might remember that I tried to do something like this about half a year ago and failed. One major problem was that at the time, I had a laptop and it could not handle the amount of content I had. Game play became extremely slow and it was unbearable to play. Shortly after I quit playing my hard drive completely fried out on me. WELL we have a new computer and have brought out the big guns to handle the region (Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.67 GHz and 6 GB of RAM).

I plan to do an update once a week with replies halfway between the week. For starters, 20 years of game play will be in-between updates and as we approach the present fewer years will go by between updates. I very much wish that I was a genius at Photoshopping like many of you are but I am afraid I am not. The majority of my pictures are going to be coming straight out of the game (and when I say majority I most likely mean ALL). I am looking to gain much more from this than most other authors. I strongly recommend criticism as long as it comes with a solution. I can handle hearing "that looks terrible, might I suggest this in its place." Hopefully I will improve significantly as time goes on in this journal but at the same time I hope that I can inform others about significant building events in the United States history (although I do not think I will be quite as good as doing it as Professor David can).

Therefore, with that being said I hope you enjoy your visits here, learn a little bit and suggest A LOT!!! If you stumble across an interesting article or just some general knowledge about city development, railroads, major transportation, etc... please share it, I know I will be interested in learning about it and can almost guarantee that someone else will be too.

That's some beautiful terrain and an excellent background statement, my friend.  Don't sweat the PhotoShop skills- some others of us (me, for instance) are similarly challenged.

The next installment is eagerly anticipated.

I almost have the settlements up to the first 20 year interval and hope that by the weekend you will get the first pictures of the development. In the mean time, here are two teasers. I also just wanted to say that it is a good time to be an author of a MD or a player of this game. Individuals keep pushing the limit and far exceeding anything anyone could have imagined when this game first came out. People wonder when SC5 is going to come out? As far as I am concerned, IT HAS. THANKS TO ALL THAT ADD CUSTOM CONTENT TO THIS GAME!!!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg242.imageshack.us%2Fimg242%2F6117%2F12fallqz7.jpg&hash=4bb3b2d2063c9ca89ba012b91a21b093e7c14098)

What ever did we do before seasonal custom content was added to the game? Probably the same thing everyone did before the invention of the T.V.

This is a good start, projectadam.  It appears as though you are well on your way to creating a realistic rural area.  IMHO, this is one of the most difficult parts of the game, simply because rural areas are more random and rarely stick to a rigid grid pattern.  Nonetheless, you have done quite well, projectadam.

Hi!

Great looking teaser-pictures. The first one is specialy eye-catching with those lovely colours of fall and subtle sunlight.

Hm, what did people do before the TV? Well, they listened to a radio, go to stage-plays, play board games, take strolls in the parks etc. etc.  ()stsfd()

And I do agree with you on the note of SC4 being "SC5" because of the wonderful creations.  :)

There's a truck in the picture. If it's a modern one with 18 wheels. Then please get parts that look 19th centry. or better yet did they inveted grain silos.  Like the big one in above.

EDIT: While constructive criticism is always welcome here, your general tone does not seem constructive. There's nothing good that you can point out? I think you can do better that this. - Dustin (thundercrack83)

The First Twenty Years: Settlement Begins

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg104.imageshack.us%2Fimg104%2F6964%2F21regionviewoa7.jpg&hash=6ecc849a8dad8f5194047cc1125d4db63f9f8f05)
00 - 20 (Year Founded in Parentheses)
New Jamestown (00)
Jacksonville (00)
Jacobsville (05)
Williamsburg (19)
West Platte (19)

Welcome back to the river region Braska or welcome if this is your first time here. For the first update twenty years have passed and we now find ourselves somewhere in the early 19th century. As Evillions pointed out there is quite a bit of content that is out of place. I agree with him and would love it if I could make Sim City look like this,

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg172.imageshack.us%2Fimg172%2F3050%2Fteaserofnewjamestown177sc5.jpg&hash=0a8760f105edf055c23c8bd9e8f545273f08cf32)

Unfortunately, that picture took somewhere between an hour to 2 hours to complete and I just do not have the time to do that for every picture. My main objective was also to grow the cities as if they were just starting out. Maybe I should have never said that this is going to be a historical represented region but also do not know how I would have justified waiting almost half a century before railroads even shows up? If anyone has any suggestions on how to state the objective better please let me know.

Moving forward you can notice that five settlements have developed. New Jamestown which is located just North of the Braska River (the region shots so far have been with a South orientation pointing up, in the future I will rotate it back to North to save some confusion). New Jamestown was the first settlement of the area. This is where I will be busted by the time police again but I just could not help how funny I thought this picture was. What would an early 19th century town be without a XXX video store?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg104.imageshack.us%2Fimg104%2F7995%2F22downonthecornercg5.jpg&hash=33cb92a84f5f6c146f47f3fd45c1c5bd541e2de1)

The next settlement to be founded is the one nearest to New Jamestown directly west (to the right on the current region view). Jacksonville was established around where a fort used to stand. General Jackson was granted some land for his service to his country and he took that land and developed a town.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg205.imageshack.us%2Fimg205%2F9310%2F23fieldandstreamgx8.jpg&hash=7c34a6b781ccd2761206895297838bba759a6e42)

Coming back to just across the river from New Jamestown is the village of Jacobsville. The main reason that New Jamestown and Jacobsville were founded was because of their proximity to the Braska River. Just down the river, there are sudden depth changes and a rocky bottom making navigation almost impossible. Many boats stop at one of these settlements to unload their cargo where it is dispersed from there. Watch in the future as these developments follow the river in their development.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg104.imageshack.us%2Fimg104%2F5186%2F24riverfrontai8.jpg&hash=3442dd8b81d7726cd8eaf5b08f37e0bf65b6b222)

The next two settlements were founded back out by Jacksonville. These two developments both were established by business associates that got into a fight over a business decision. Businessperson John Williams was so upset over the fighting with his partner that he left Jacksonville and founded Williamsburg. His business collaborate George Platte, not to be outdone, also left and founded West Platte.

Hope you have enjoyed your visit to Braska River and will come back really soon.

Replies:

art128: Arthur, thanks for stopping by and I hope you stay around to see how everything develops.

dedgren: David, hope you enjoyed the next installment. Always great to get encouragement from someone who has made such a huge impact on MDs.

Lilojame: Thanks for the wishes of good luck, if only I had your ability to create such great in game pictures!

Metarvo: Hopefully we will be able to get some good looking rural areas but growing up in the Midwest I am a big believer of the sections of farm ground so there will be quite a bit of big grids in the region. At the start at least.

Sim-al2: I do not know what they did before television but I am guessing it was not near as fun after it was invented. I will use it to make the same comment for the seasonal changing fields found in Sim City 4.

Evillions: Yeah, there is going to be a lot of out of place content but even with all of the great content out there I still do not feel that you can create a true 19th century atmosphere. I hope you can overlook this because I think the development of the region will be interesting and hope you make it back.

And anticipation is well repaid.  I remember driving for miles on then unpaved US83 in Nebraska in the early 1960s- the rural west was not settled all that long ago.

A great trip, my friend.

We are making progress on the region slowly but surely. The five towns that are already settled have seen a major growth and looks like this update will only be a 5 to 10 year update. Do not worry though because with the added growth of the settlements and the addition of 2 - 6 new settlements the next update should be packed with excitement. Here is just a little teaser, what would a Midwest town be without a Farm and Fleet?

blade2k5: Thanks for stopping by; to hear that you think the map is good really means a lot from someone who has the map-making skills that you do. I hope you will become a regular here.

David: Thanks for being a repeat customer  As my region gets closer to the present day expect to find many of your great projects along with others to be used quite a bit. As for good old US83, a road that I have been on many times although it was always paved when I traveled it, I am wondering if you went south of I-80 on 83 and if you did, I wonder if the water tower that looks like a golf ball was there when you were on it?

Hi there!
Hoho, things are on the roll here. I am sorry, to check back in so late... Thanks for the compliment there. If you want any help with that feel free to pm.  ;)

And now to your update: The region picture looks good. I am a bit bothered with the gridines of the farm fields there BUT that is meerly because here wehere I live we dont realy have that. As for the pictures that you have taken, they are very nice shots. The first (after the region shot) and the last one in the update are especialy nice looking.

Nice teaser there also. A question tho: are the sidewalks by the "dirt" road they intentionaly?

I am looking foward to see more!

It looks like you have done a fine job of constructing a small town, projectadam.  I have heard about the midwestern farm grids before, but I suppose I was biased on this subject since the farms in my area are usually more random.  Even so, this is becoming a very good MD, if I do say so myself.  Keep up the good work, projectadam!

Washington (22)
Beatrice (23)

Welcome back all of the loyal followers that post/lurk and welcome if this is your first time here. This update is going to focus on only one town, which I am quite fond of and find it interesting. Washington was founded in the 22nd year after development first began in the River Region Braska. Washington was founded because of the river business that brought in fishing, goods, and the first ferry crossing in the area due to the rocks that are along the river directly to the northeast. Unfortunately, as settlers become more aware of the river, ferry operators will be able to navigate the river along the rocks and the major growth will bypass Washington and settle in New Jamestown, Jacobsville and Beatrice. The other larger cities on the river will become the major attractions to take advantage of the business along the river and Washington's glory days will only be after its first several years of settlement. For now, we will look at the seasonal looks of Washington. Enjoy and have a great weekend

For a bonus picture this week, I thought I would take something from real life. I think when you sit down to create a region in Sim City 4 it should be a good mixture of both what you know and what you have seen in places you have not been. Therefore, I have chosen a picture from the area that I grew up to show the role that agriculture still plays to the area.

Lilojame: Thanks for taking the time from your EXCELLENT MD to come over here and comment on mine (for those who have not taken a look at Lilojame's MD (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=6142.0) I highly recommend taking a look). I actually did or did not really have a preference on the sidewalk and did not know I had an option of whether it showed up or not. I thought with the zoning it would automatically show up but if you told me a way for it not too I would probably take it out  ;D

metarvo: Thanks for coming back for a second helping of Braska. I appreciate your comments and the midwest is really a crazy area for the way that the land is used. I have heard from countless amounts of people how boring they think the drive through Nebraska is but I happen to enjoy going (posted speed limit on I-80 75 mph) a little faster because it is so flat you can see if there are any cops ahead  ;)

Hi there and thank you! ;) Hm, not sure actualy but that is because I never tried using dirt roads for the residentals but if I find out a way to "remove" them I will let you know.
As for the update, it looks very nice. I specialy like the first 3 pictures, for the last one, sadly it doesnt really look like winter. With that could help plopable snow that is somewhere on LEX (I will add link when I find it) and maybe the mod that changes the textures of some lots (not sure where to find it but I know that it exist) or well, ading some white specs around the image in the image-editing program to do a feeling of falling snow and since there are the greens, maybe turning it into black&white.
I love how quiet and peaceful this village looks. And the RL picture looks very interesting.

Looking foward to see more! :)

Braska still looks good.  The dirt roads really do add a lot of detail to the Washington pictures.  After reading this update, I'm guessing that Washington is still in its early stages of development.  If so, will we see the town as it grows and becomes more modern?  It will be interesting to see where the paved roads will be inserted, if they are.
Keep up the good work, projectadam.

Title: Update: Replies, Tutorial and Asking for Help
Post by: projectadam on November 25, 2008, 01:10:42 PM
Replies, Tutorial and Asking for Help

For the middle of the week update (from now on it will be the 1/2 update teaser and replies) we will examine a little tutorial on streams. Why would I be doing a tutorial on streams? Well, for the first reason one of the new settlements will have many streams involved with it and the second reason is maybe someone knows how to make them easier than me and can offer their suggestions.

For starters, we have our little piece of land that we want a stream to run along the road.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg519.imageshack.us%2Fimg519%2F4562%2Ftutorial51nb9.jpg&hash=ca3524a8fc3aac18f66121cf24f0940b676486e8)

Now if we would just plop the steam pieces on the uneven terrain we would have weird effects with the grass showing through and walls on the sides of the pieces. So we need to smooth the area out with either the avenue or road tool (I have used the road tool in the past but someone recommended me trying the avenue tool to see how it works.)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg397.imageshack.us%2Fimg397%2F3955%2Ftutorial52xl6.jpg&hash=7e73dbb3329ae657a460858bdeb6e1d8a7bf8858)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg151.imageshack.us%2Fimg151%2F8742%2Ftutorial53vh3.jpg&hash=7ee4e52f07c67dc85d8ac8f22393852ab9bfa876)

Hooray, now all we have to do is add the pieces and we are done right?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg397.imageshack.us%2Fimg397%2F325%2Ftutorial54cu6.jpg&hash=86908e3d28c19e53ae0966406c8d350f76ac46c7)
Picture Rotated To Show Problem

WRONG!!! We have the walls and grass textures sticking through because we are on a slope next to the road. Since we want the elevation to stay the same on the other side of the road, so we do not have the stream just cutting through our region, what could we do. Well, the way I went about fixing the problem is ending the stream one square away from the road. This way the elevation can be changed on the road and the stream on the other side can be smoothed and will not have such a drastic look on the other side of the region. I add a wall on the road and it looks like a great stream if I do say so myself.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg151.imageshack.us%2Fimg151%2F4222%2Ftutorial55mm4.jpg&hash=7db49a59e255d1333f23f27c74ff7c582e0f2f93)

If anyone has any other suggestions, please share them. I do not think this is the end all answer and I am guessing the streams or canals could be made a lot easier but I could not think of anything at the time. Now, time for some

Lilojame: If you find a way to remove the sidewalks let me know, I would be eager to find out. Snow is definitely missing from that last picture and it would make for a better winter scene. I guess it was a really, really dry and warm winter :D This MD will hopefully be the essence of a quiet and peaceful place to live, work and play... Until we get further along in the future and start to see major growth.

Simpson: Thanks for stopping by, the Region of Braska appreciates your visit.

metarvo: Always great to see one of the originals that have replied since the first update, welcome back. Washington along with every city is in its early developments; unfortunately for Washington this will be about as good as life gets. Paved roads are around the corner (if the corner was 100 years )

You've put together a very helpful tutorial, projectadam.  I know that I have learned something here.  There's one thing that bothers me a little, though.  Dirt roads that I have seen IRL become paved temporarily before crossing a body of water.  It looks as though the dirt road forms a bridge over the canal.  There would almost have to be a supporting bridge structure under the dirt road for this to be possible.  I'm not saying that this is a bad thing.  It's just something that I have never seen before.  I don't mean to bring up this "paved roads" thing again, though.  This is a wonderful MD, projectadam, and I look forward to the next update.

metarvo,

This is I think the greatest thing about making a MD. Sometimes you are so caught up making sure that this is right or this is right that you completely overlook something. I believe that I overlooked a major thing :-[ I am so caught up with making the dirt roads because that is my one major thing that keeps this correct to the period that I did not even think about what it would be like with bridges. That would be some road if it did not need any kind of support to span over a stream :D Thanks for pointing this out and I can guarantee the issue will be addressed before the update this weekend with replies to all. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone, I think that we all have a lot to be thankful for

Haha, what would I give for a warm winter... but yes, it could be taken as such. ;) Hm, I guess there is no option but if somebody would take the time to mod sidewalks so that they would be made entirely from grass or dirt... maybe. ()what() I dont know much about moding, so I wouldnt know.

And I have to say, that you have a nice tutorial there. I usualy just flaten the ground for the plopable lakes and rise the are for road a tile away from that but it is interesting to see how you aproached the problem.

Have fun,
Karin

EDIT: I dont know how and if it works since I didnt tryed it but check this (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=17323&v=1).

25 - 30 Years: A Summer Drive near Henery

25 - 30 (Year Founded in Parentheses)
Henery (Year 29)
Suh (Year 30)

I hope that this holiday weekend finds all of you doing very well and thanks for coming back to Braska. We have had little development in the area with Washington's farm ground growing and two new settlements. A lumberyard was built in the south to meet the need for building materials and the town of Suh was settled around the new business. Henery was built to the east in the hills and the layout is much different from the rest of the development so far with smaller farms to fill the flatlands between hills. Main Street is located just north of Stinkin Water Creek and the edge of downtown is pictured below.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg368.imageshack.us%2Fimg368%2F2732%2F61downtownka8.jpg&hash=6c0c22e7078e8760eeffea89fa9a4139fd2190e6)

Mosaics are always a fun way to see a town and I was feeling very inspired by JBSimio's MD (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=4274.320) and decided to highlight the countryside of Henery.

Hi Projectadam,

It's my first visit to your MD here in Braska.  I have to say that I am very impressed with what you've done here.  My favourites so far are the town of Washington (I love a great suburb!) and the mosaic from the last update is really something special.  You mentioned tht it was JBSimio's Covington that insipred your mosaic, and I can see that in your mosaic (that is a compliment!!).

One thing that is a little odd to me is the very square, grid like nature of the farms in the region views.  But I guess that in parts of the US farms are that big and square (I recall seeing something similar when flying into Calgary airport in Canada).  Here in England the farms tend to be a bit more "random" shaped!

Good luck with the next step of development here and I'll make sure I come by again.

Paul

Update 12/1/08: A Couple of Teasers and Replies

Wow, what an overwhelming amount of replies. I originally thought about only doing one group of replies throughout the week and my major updates over the weekend. As Braska is picking up steam, I might have to do two sets of replies throughout the week.

The first thing I would like to acknowledge is a scene, which was captured from Henery. It was entered into the SC4D Picture Competition and was inducted into the Hall of Fame. For all those that voted both for and against me, thanks for taking the time to check out the pictures. I would also like to thank marcszar's Domino Sugars, which drew me to taking the picture in the first place. Marcszar has several unbelievable lots that he has designed that I would highly recommend checking out on the LEX.

Inducted 11/30/2008

I also am busy working on the next five years of Braska. It is a busy time with six new settlements in that period. I am hoping that the entire region will be up-to-date by the end of the week but we will see how much I get completed. I can offer you a teaser of one of the six cities.

Hope you enjoyed the two pictures and now time for...

metarvo: Thanks as always for stopping by. I agree that the bridges look much better and want to thank you for pointing those out. I will keep up the good work here and you keep up the good work with the power

paroch: Welcome and thanks for taking the time to stop by and reply &bis& Washington does have a nice feel to it, a unique small town located right on the river. In the flatlands, the bulky grid pattern will hold up but as development starts to get into the hills, I think you will see farms set up more to what you are used to. Thanks again for stopping by and hope to see you again.

Pat: Thanks for stopping by and I believe this might be your first time posting here. Thanks for taking the time to look and hope to see you back again. I also want to thank you for the nice award you presented me in your MD Waterfalls (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=722.1100)

kbieniu7: Thanks for checking out Braska. Those roads do look very stair steppish, darn this grid system. I think I will revisit certain areas and maybe extend the roads and make the 45 degree angled roads that I think will clean it up a little bit. I also think that the forest will be replanted &idea

sithlrd98: Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will find time to revisit again ;)

CabraBuitre: The river has taken a lot of time to get to work but the time invested truly is paying off because I think it looks great too. Sorry to hear about the hard drive crash :angrymore: those always take awhile to get over but I hope you get back into MDing.

Lilojame: Always a pleasure to have you stop by and thanks for the support ;) The bridges did turn out great and I am very thankful that metarvo pointed them out to me.

It was well worth the time   I don't always have my nose in a map, though it may seem like it.

Seems I've missed a couple of updates.  The tutorial was quite informative as I'm now in the beginnings of testing the waters, no pun intended $%Grinno$% and attempting to make my own plop rivers/streams and ponds.

I'm quite impressed with your rural farming communities, reminds me a lot of what I see around my neck of the woods and the mosiac perfectly showcased that.  Stinking Water Creek eh? :D   What causes the stink I hazard to ask? ::)

A sugar factory....mmmmmmmm.....sounds like Kent is a sweet place to live, pardon the pun :D  I like the Sunrise over Kent pic, very nice.  Wonderful updates, look forward to more soon

Replies and Getting Cranked up for the Weekend Update

Whew, it was an intense 24 hours with some major soul searching. Unfortunately, I had a lot placed in one of my cities that became an IMMORTAL LOT OF DEATH. Well, it lead to some other problems in the city and I actually lost one of my past regions due to a similar event (completely different lot). I was very bummed out and was contemplating what to do next when ScottFTL offered some advice and it WORKED. I was able to solve the problem so construction of the region is moving forward again. Look for a major update this weekend with a region shot and some more pictures but for something to hold you over in the meantime, I have prepared a mosaic. Enjoy...

blade2k5: Hmmmmmm, some plop rivers/streams and ponds in the works, please let me know when that project is wrapping up. Glad that you have enjoyed the rural communities. Stinkin Water Creek received its name because many of the early citizens of Henery would dump their waste into the creek. I promise you, I was worried for the fate of Braska when I read about your dilemma.  I'm glad that you got this problem sorted out, projectadam.  The teaser on 12/01/08 looks really good, and this latest one seems to show some signs of progress.  Isn't the SAM just the most wonderful mod?  There is so much that can be done with it, and you are using it quite well.  Additionally, the streams running through the most recent teaser add much to the scene.  Again, I am relieved that this MD is up and running again.  Keep up the good work, projectadam!   :)

12/07/08 30 - 35 Years (Part A): Starting with the New Cities First

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F9996%2F91regionviewir0.jpg&hash=897d4277939366f62745cbb258ad328492cde9f4)
30 - 35 (Years Founded in Parentheses)
Kent (Year 32)
Imperial (Year 32)
Papillion (Year 32)
Anne (Year 32)
Clark (Year 32)
Franklin (Year 34)

Now we are getting cranked up with development. As you can see, six new settlements in a three-year time span. I am working to try to get a picture from every town but this update will focus just on the new towns. We will head to Kent to follow up on the teaser. Shipbuilding drove Kent's economy with its great location just past the falls on the Braska River. In this shot, we look at some residential areas and in the corner you can see one of the few farms located around Kent.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F7505%2Fkent911dw4.jpg&hash=7b7f3c471afae12126c3aac0374f5ac7ec7f8cf7)

Imperial is the next town to be viewed. Industry was located on the outskirts of the farm sprawl and it did not take long for people to settle around the industry.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg412.imageshack.us%2Fimg412%2F1181%2Fimperial912sg4.jpg&hash=e7dd9b161a6298c180dc058e6a515150312602ca)

Papillion was founded around a mill that was built alongside Papillion Creek. The mill brought in many different immigrants and a wide range of culture can be seen in the architecture of the town.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg412.imageshack.us%2Fimg412%2F257%2Fpapillion913jq6.jpg&hash=7fac17269c85fd0e82fcea4d70172a60f905e683)

Anne is located in the southwest and is just a small farming community. The community center is a hotspot of activity where farmers discuss crops, pests and who will win the annual Anne's Days pie eating contest.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg530.imageshack.us%2Fimg530%2F9089%2Fanne914wb5.jpg&hash=d3f41dd87bda9df82523707ac706a0b9f964f77b)

The people of Clark take great pride of the clock tower located on Main Street. It was a gift from one of the wealthiest farmers in the area and distant cousin to the famous explorer William Clark. To honor Lewis and Clark's expedition that is rumored to have started near Clark, the clock tower can be found in many of the towns in the area.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg527.imageshack.us%2Fimg527%2F4434%2Fclark915ys0.jpg&hash=01dec388858f3b65cdf929d7953f6d350a260fe4)

Missionaries followed the Braska River to the Northeast and decided to build a church in the hills. Many others followed with dreams of exploration like Lewis and Clark but did not have what it took to be explorers and started their new lives in Franklin.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg208.imageshack.us%2Fimg208%2F7331%2Ffranklin916xh1.jpg&hash=a71471e34cffcfd885992590c8d76b8f01e5c1a1)

Hope you enjoyed the first half of the update and we will look at the other towns that have already been settled in the region.

Hi again!
Thank you very much!  :) And don't worry, it shall be there for you to visit when you will have time, I completely understand how hard it is to work on updates, deal with RL and keep track with MDs around at same time; so there is no hard feelings there. ;)
As to your shiny new update:
Very nice progress there! I very much like how you describe each photo and like the look of all six settlements, my favorite would probably be Franklin tho (haha, Mayor has the best spot!). Anns road looks great also (you are doing a great job on using SAM). In an overall I very much like what you are showing in here.
Oh, and by the way, since our good friend flyinbird93 has a property in here, I would love to buy one also. I was thinking about the brown house besides the Mayor house in Franklin. Love the view there and the stream. I know, that the mayor will probably want to evolve the location around there in years to come but regardless of that, I would still love to live there for few years at least. ;)

See you,

12/07/08 30 - 35 Years (Part B): The Foundation of Development

This update is coming out a little later than planned, I was hoping for a midweek update but here it is. We will just be looking back at all of the developed cities from 0 - 30 years. I have the game up to year 45 with three new cities but do not know if I will get that update published this week or not. Taking a little break to celebrate a very special event out of SC4, MY WEDDING ANNIVERSARY OF 4 YEARS ()flower(). I am sure the wife will enjoy the added attention :D

So, let us start in the past and move forward with the pictures.

Those are two very nice updates there.

I liked both Clark and Kent (Super choice of names  ::) by the way).  The village church is very English - and makes me think of some villages around where I live.

And the most recent update shows us some slightly more built up areas - which is nice for variety.  I liked the small markets in Jacksonville and Jacobville.

The people of Williamsburg sure are spoilt for choice when it comes to Chinese restaurants - is there a Chinese community there?

And then I notice the market in Washington - that looks mighty familiar!!  I like the way it is squeezed in between the buildings - a nice idea.  One thing I do notice about the centre of Washington (nice idea to have it paved int he centre and dirt roads round the edges btw) is the different sidewalk textures.  I think a sidewalk modd would really make a big difference as it would be much more uniform.  I started using one quite some time ago, and I think it was created by Jeronij, so you may want to search on the LEX.  I do think it would be time well invested if you had a look at it.

I really like suburbs in SC4 (have I mentioned that before??), so I like the shot of Beatrice very much.

And Henry is very nice as well.

All in all a great update you've shown here and it's interesting to see your region grow.

All the best

Paul

Hi there!
Darn, didn't see the connection between Clark and Kent until Paul pointed it out.  ;D On that note, I believe that he is referring to Street Side Mod for SAM (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1364) and JRJ Street Side Mod (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=115) , the wonderful downloads on Lex. They are both great, by the way.

As for your update, I like it very much once again! If there would be the regular asphalt roads there and slightly different residential then it would be 70% like my home town. In any case you are doing great job and it is  most interesting to see how your region is evolving.

Looking forward to see more,
Karin

After the next update, life in Braska as we know it will be completely changed. The winds of changes are starting to blow and if anyone can guess what the major change is going to be they will be rewarded with a town named after them and maybe another special recognition that will be named later. This update is coming at an appropriate time because it is coming after just a few days of Braska's ONE-MONTH ANNIVERSARY!!! To celebrate the joyous occasion I thought I would recognize two individuals. Lilojame has posted the most times in my MD and a town in this update will be named in honor of her (Karinstown). On the day of the anniversary, I also ran a stat to see who had posted the most per day since their first post and one of the counties in Braska will be named Flying Bird County in honor of flyinbird93. Thanks everyone for making it a great first month and I hope that you are and will continue to enjoy this as much as I am. Thanks again and here are some pictures.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg66.imageshack.us%2Fimg66%2F9335%2F102susannajp9.jpg&hash=a362aa5f67d114c7398b87e4cddf31c8056cf73a)
Susanna

With this set of photos, you will notice that we are moving further and further away from New Jamestown and industry is now becoming the major force for growth as the region starts to move away from agriculture. Farming will still play a major importance and will continue to grow but many towns will now be founded because of the industry that was started there.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F118%2F103muddyforkag7.jpg&hash=adfad88c9869a774ee380dbb33f0c74f65ee9aa1)
Muddy Fork

Muddy Fork was named because on the far west side of the town, a creek splits into two creeks. I know, that is clever that the people were able to come up with that ::)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F8391%2F104karinstowndi5.jpg&hash=6cf7354a468e97b08fa7497fd7b5633bd3712464)
KARINSTOWN

Here it is the recognition for constantly encouraging me in this MD, Karinstown. Since it is a special honor, I thought I should do at least two different pictures. The one above shows the edge of Main Street and some of the businesses and the great architecture for the town. The one below shows the processing plant that is a major reason for the growth of the town.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg209.imageshack.us%2Fimg209%2F7943%2F105karinstownya5.jpg&hash=65bf780944899839de7f4a311bc7bce10b496709)

Dell

Here is another example of industry driving the growth of a town. A major mining operation and other industry is what lead many flocking to this town in search of fortunes.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg390.imageshack.us%2Fimg390%2F7436%2F107yunada8.jpg&hash=1487fab1523d1cc0864df683b4500284f333cb55)
Yuna

The wealthy tycoon William Braylor knew that he could invest in a large amount of land just southwest of Anne for a low price. He decided he was going to launch his enterprise from this area as if he knew something that others did not yet. He named the town after his youngest daughter, Yuna.

As I said in the introduction, if you think you know what might be the major changes to the region just comment on Braska with your answer. To cheer up your Monday Blues how about some...

Paul and Karin: I am grouping your reply because I have a question that you both touched on. First the Clark Kent thing happened by accident and I did not even realize it until you mentioned it. Now for the question, I currently have the street side mod but do not have the SAM version. If I download that now will I experience any major problems with my already developed regions or should I be okay :-[ In addition, I was looking at the dependences and it required one that is locked by admins, is this because it is the package that is used for the NAM? If you or anyone knows the answers please do not hesitate to speak up.

Very clever :D  I mean, who would have thought of Muddy Fork for a name :D  Looks like a nice little town, especially with those cobblestone streets   The processing plant in Dell looks to be a pretty good sized operation, how many are employed there?

All in all, very enjoyable updates and Braska looks like it's going to continue to boom, at least for the time being.  Look forward to the next update

I believe that you should be ok if you download and install that also.  I had almost half of the region done when Robin (rooker1) told me about these side modes and after installing them both I could go into already made cities without any glitch or trouble whatsoever. So in my experience you should be fine. All that you really need to do is really carefully read the instructions. (But for the sake of being careful I would advice you to safe-store a copy of your region).

About the locked dependency:
In SAM Street Side Mod you are linked to SAM Ver 1 which is obsolete since there is Ver 3 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1594) and I believe that you already have it installed. If you have an older version then I am sure that in version 3 are some instructions on how to "upgrade".

I hope that that helps.

Now to your latest update:
Thank you very much for the honor bestowed upon me!  ()stsfd() Karintown looks very nice indeed! Both pictures are looking great. I also like Susanna, Muddy Fork (superb name  :) ) Dell and Yuna.
You are doing great work in here and it is interesting to follow the development that you are doing. I also very much like your approach to MDing which I believe is an unique one.
I am definitely looking forward to see how the things evolve on again!

Yours Truly,
Karin

Update 12/22/08: Where Art Thou Projectadam

Maybe you have noticed or maybe you have not noticed that I did not do a middle of the week update or a major weekend update for this past week. Is everything okay, is the region still being built???

Of course it is  I am currently working on a project that will most likely deal with 25% - 50% of the tiles which equals around 36 - 72 large tiles. I was hoping someone would guess what was coming next for Braska but no one did. Therefore, just to keep your interest in the region I will post some teaser pictures of what massive project is going on.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg261.imageshack.us%2Fimg261%2F3255%2F112rw1.jpg&hash=22734db8fcad3848b259ea57fc558ec20a83ff54)

I will be doing a little bit of traveling for the Holidays and will hopefully have something a little more major posted (maybe as a stocking stuffer) before Christmas comes but we will see what time permits. In the meantime, there is always time for some...

Replies:

metarvo: Thanks for the wishes of success and for stopping by. If you like the way that Braska is looking now, wait for about one or two more weeks when I think it is going to be looking REALLY GOOD :D

blade2k5: Come on in and get warm my Badger Fan ()sick() Hmmm, I do not know how many the processing plant employs but it is the major employer of the town. I will check next time I am in game and if you need a job, I could put in a good word for you to HR ::)

Shhhhh, keep this on the down low but I believe that a sport that you have worked on with NHP might be coming to Braska very soon. For those who have not been over to pay a visit to a great development team, check them out. (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?board=79.0) They have created many goodies for the game and you will find some amazing maps to use. Thanks for the comment.

Karin: Thanks for bringing in page four with a bang (or in this case, a dancing pink elephant). I think I have installed everything I need and have not experienced any problems but have not noticed many changes either. Glad that you like Karinstown and if you ever have a couple of ideas for the city, send them my way and I will see what I can do ;)

I will close out by wishing everyone Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year if you do not hear again from me before next year. I need to go to bed and warm up from the -14F degrees outside right now.

Hi there!

I have to say that I am really really glad that all is well in here. You got me scared for a moment there!
Mmmm.... railroads!!! I am all excited! Have to say, that I love trains, especially the old steam ones. I once seen one in an MD or CJ but am not able to find it. In any case (even if I maybe missed a point), you most definitely have my attention here as you had it in the past.

As for the changes, yes, they were subtle for me also and yet on the long run it makes a difference. In any case it just mostly changes the sidewalks so that you don't get it changed with different wealth levels and that makes the streets look much more realistic and the pictures taken more pleasant to the eye.

Have great times traveling around and I wish you a Merry Christmas!

Karin
Title: UPDATE 12/24/08: TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND ALL THROUGH BRASKA
Post by: projectadam on December 24, 2008, 09:56:04 PM
UPDATE 12/24/08: TWAS THE NIGHT
BEFORE CHRISTMAS AND ALL THROUGH BRASKA

"The time will come when people will travel in stages moved by steam engines from one city to another, almost as fast as birds can fly, 15 or 20 miles an hour.... A carriage will start from Washington in the morning, the passengers will breakfast at Baltimore, dine at Philadelphia, and sup in New York the same day.... Engines will drive boats 10 or 12 miles an hour, and there will be hundreds of steamers running on the Mississippi, as predicted years ago." Oliver Evans, 1800.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg392.imageshack.us%2Fimg392%2F6035%2F111kq6.jpg&hash=691a54275a278c921f0cac830980be9d78f16f61)

The railroad has come to Braska. The above map shows the proposed lines connecting to the rest of Sim Nation. The lines proposed are estimated to take ten years to build. It is an exciting time in Braska and many towns which were once small communities will now become business centers for the railroad.

For a special picture to celebrate the season, there has been a Santa spotting in Beatrice (shown below). Merry Christmas everyone and expect to have a full and proper update by the end of the year.

Joan: Thanks for making the rounds; hopefully it will become a regular on your schedule. Happy New Year

chester: Glad that one of your first few posts was here at Braska, I really appreciate it. I hope that it was inspirational enough to dust them off and use them in your cities. Happy New Year &apls

Haljackey: Thank you for the extremely kind words, which mean a lot coming from one of the transport gurus. In about 100 years, the region should be ready for some massive road systems and I will be anxious to pick your brain for suggestions. Happy New Year ;)

Robin: Thanks for the congratulations and posting here in Braska. The railroad will be a hot theme for at least the next couple of updates. City development is going to take kind of a back seat until the trains make it out to Sim Nation. Happy New Year ;D

Corey Best: Thanks for thinking this is such a great rural area. It is what I was born and raised in so I am glad I could translate it somewhat to Sim City. In addition, your signature has made me curious to look into Jersey, which I plan to do in a little bit. Maybe one day, you can make a Jersey inspired MD. Happy New Year :)

The map is mesmerizing- I know I've flown over that area recently. I just know it.

Fine work here- with all the content out there, it amazes me how hard the challenges are that a serious "period piece" MDer has to face.  The biggest non-sequiter that caught my eye was the swimming pools- other than that, your vision of 1900 is pretty compelling.

I'm with David on the map--just absolutely amazing stuff there! The farms and the river looks so realistic, I'm just stunned!

And the update is wonderful, too! The planning for this project has to be so immense--with the dirt road set up, and trying to keep everything in the correct time period. I applaud not only your effort, but also the wonderful results!

You're off to a great start in OSITM, my friend! It's going to be a fun month, I know it!

Region Overview Showing Counties (Years Organized in Parenthesis)
Elizabeth County (1780)
Flying Bird County (1797)
Perkins County (1801)
Corel County (1808)
Sarpy County (1819)
Keith County (1824)

Before I get too deep into this update, I thought it might be a good idea to bring a few things to attention. It seems if you have not completed a history section for your MD and are considering doing a history write up, that the OSIM is the perfect time to get the history out in the open. Since Braska is living its history, I will not have a lengthy post covering its entire history but I can give some background on some key things that have already happened. I thought the best thing would be to tell about the counties of the region. I will do them one at a time and this will give visitors something to check out while the railroad is slowly extending throughout the region.

Another thing that I wanted to point out is that if you looked at the region map you noticed a major difference from previous ones. I HAVE FINALLY OPENED EVERY TILE OF THE REGION, WOOHOO! Sorry for the screaming but that was a time consuming thing that I am glad to have completed and I think the region is looking great.

Something else that I wanted to mention that I completely overlooked on my last update is that Braska broke the 2000 view milestone. Thanks everyone that has shown interest in my MD and I hope I have been able to inspire you in your own works or that you have just enjoyed checking out the region. Now, it is time to move onto the first of six series on the counties.

Elizabeth County
Founded: 1780
County Seat: New Jamestown
Area:
     Total: 411 sq mi
     Land: 392 sq mi
     Water: 19 sq mi

Elizabeth County was the first county organized in Braska. The county is named after Corel Masterson's youngest daughter Elizabeth.

David: Those are not swimming pools, just really nice horse troughs $%Grinno$% The "period pieces" are lacking and from the very start, I did not know how I was going to address the issue. I wanted a region to have a somewhat symbolic growth of a typical Midwest area but of course, electricity, architecture and cars being everywhere took the early 1800s out of the era.

On the other hand, I could not justify saying that it was present day and just starting out and keeping dirt streets for around 140 years, no railroad for around 70 years, planes, architecture, etc... Thanks for the kind words and the region cannot wait to transform again after some serious touchups with the single-track railroad when it comes out :o

Dustin: Thanks for stopping by and encouraging an MDer :) Really, if the region was given out and the magnifying glasses came out, it would not take long to notice many things out of place. With the power of showing what I want to though, a lot of farms and dirt roads, I have been able to show a 19th century looking region. Once again thanks for the compliments and I am anxiously awaiting part two of the "transport map tutorial." "$Deal"$

bat: The farms are what really makes this feel like mid 19th century Midwest. Thanks for stopping by ;)

kant01: Thanks for stopping by. I believe that as time moves on the region shot will only look better and better. I am a little taken back at how amazing it looks compared to the very first region view. I wish your New England Colonial pieces would have come out about 2 months before they did but I am sure they will still find a home somewhere in Braska

Nexis: Thanks for coming back and commenting. I hope that you get into the world of MDing and you can count on me being one of your first comments :D

Interesting stuff here, projectadam!

I love the continuing backstory, and the map with county delineations looks wonderful, too! Though, I must say that Elizabeth County looks a lot bigger than the rest.

No matter, though! I can't wait to see what you have next for us, my friend!

Take care!

Transportation Map from New Jamestown (Train Marked in Black Line)

It feels good to be writing in my MD. I have been without a steady internet connection for the past three days. I believe that it had something to do with the snow that the area received and I am guessing that the -34F wind chill did not help. After the proposal of the train tracks was passed and only a few short years of construction, the developers realized that the project was going to be finished late and cost more than budgeted. Why is that not a big surprise for a major construction project?

The other thing that I thought I should mention is greetings past Braska Region viewers and welcome to the new region, Elizabeth County. Well, it is the same region just with a new fancy name. Even as a creator, it is amazing how you can be involved in a project and realize after someone has pointed out something, that maybe you were focused on something different. I came to this conclusion after Dustin had pointed out something about my region that it seemed like Elizabeth County was much bigger than any of the other counties. I paused, thought about this for a while, looked at the map when I realized that Elizabeth County is actually the star of this show and not necessary Braska (which is the river that runs through the region and the fictional name of the state that this supposedly takes place in.) I think the transition should be smooth and am excited to show off the announcement with the massive growth that Papillion is experiencing with the railroad.

Hey, projectadam!

What a wonderful update, my friend!

As always, your region maps continue to be some of the finest that I've seen in a long time, and the pictures of Papillion look splendid, too--especially that fantastic mosaic you put together! Excellent job!

The transition from Braska to Elizabeth County is seamless, too, my friend--sorry for putting the idea in your head, though! I hope it didn't cause you too much unnecessary thinking and toiling!

In any event, I will be watching with eager anticipation to see where things go next here!

Take care!

Readers and Guest of Elizabeth County

As you have noticed, I have not made an update to Elizabeth County for quite sometime and am afraid to report that in my planning I have made an error that is going to take quite sometime to figure out a solution for. As of now, Elizabeth County is going to be retired from the boards but I do not plan to delete it from my system and continue to tinker with it and see if I can get things solved to my satisfaction.

I have learned a lot and believe that the things I have learned from Elizabeth County will improve my building and MDing skills in the future. I am thinking about opening up another project in the meantime to keep myself busy here on SC4D. Thanks for all of the support/replies the past three months and the people of Elizabeth County hope to welcome you again :)

Replies:

Since many of these replies will just be thanks, I will answer them all at once. Thanks for your support for the last update before the holding period: Dustin, Feroxx, bat, Haljackey, sim_link, David, TheTeaCat, kant01, Sciurus and metarvo.

The Tractor Supply I believe is from SimGoober but I will check to make sure metarvo.
