Uhm yeah, first you need to have enough money to buy a combine to harvest your grain and stuff  JK :D

But seriously. you need a lot of essential files like prop packs and textures to start with farming custom content. Once you have downloaded it all you will be rewarded with beautiful farms and fields. It's definitely worth the downloading.
Don't worry too much about grow stages and the cam. First read the documentation about the CAM to see if it's really something you want as it changes the game a bit. For farming, grow stages aren't that important as you can grow stage 1 to 3 from the beginning. For higher stages you need the CAM. If you don't want the CAM you shouldn't download CAM farms as they won't grow without the CAM. Normal farms grow with or without the CAM. I hope this helps you a bit. If you have further question don't hesitate to ask them :)
Oh and for I forget, read the readme's carefully, otherwise you'll find brown boxes in your farms ;)

CAM is a mod that you can read about in the Colossus AddOn Mod forum. There is a manual explaining all about it attached to the first post here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=1877.0).
