Title: Nauset - Teaser - June 6th
Post by: evanator on February 08, 2009, 02:44:16 PM
Hello Everyone, I'm rather new here and would like to share my current region; Nauset.
The MD will focus around the city of Nauset, and it's surrounding suburbs. An old city in the New World, Nauset is named after the first tribe the pilgrims made contact with.

The extremely flat land around the city has been used for farming for centuries.
Due to it's age the city has many winding routes that lead to it, upgraded from mere trails to modest roads. The city also has it's age to thank for it's lack of a definite grid system.

Because of these things, many upgrades will be needed to the city's infrastructure, and this MD will be a constant work in progress. The idea being that first I will try and get everything built to a certain point in the city's development. Then I will go back and upgrade and do all sort's of interesting things to the 'old' city.

Enough explaining now. The first update will focus on the small farming village of Samoset and its surroundings. Heres a map of the region and it's major routes, so you can figure it's relation to Nauset.

This is where 340 terminates at Route 6 in the center of town
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_25.jpg&hash=2295ae7ee6797203462f34fd53000776d7ef616a)

Here the local rail line passes through the industrial zones and makes its way to Samoset Station.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_26.jpg&hash=db01126d981616b276bca80d3affffd632fe57a8)

The town is packed very dense, as is common for small towns in the region, despite the vast amounts of spacious farmland surrounding it. 635 cuts through farms.

More Farms
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_16.jpg&hash=6b9e23a27fcd3308783bf22dccc13c13e715ceb4)

A few hi-tech farms have sprouted up in the surrounding area.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_17.jpg&hash=1261d253835c920084217cefd2a46a47fd72fdb9)

The town has grown outward in recent years, encompassing this old farm, the first farm built here in Samoset. The Historical Society had it preserved, and the town grew around it.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_24.jpg&hash=b5c986cea4bf451d72bc7c413fcb3d8e7f7ad2b0)

The edge of town, where the farms begin right away
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_27.jpg&hash=3cb80950e24376109e5d8db11b5a197bf21e10be)

These developments are recent, and are right in the middle of two local farms. Farmers fear they are a picture of whats to come, as the town expands.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_23.jpg&hash=bd34572a89632fb06bf85d21efb3c10f3d05e119)

Here's where Route 6 meets and hooks up with Route 20 for a while before continuing south. It's the busiest junction in town, and it isn't even in town!
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_22.jpg&hash=5ae902fb1c26e9c1ae1a9683f917240d24cb8125)

An overview of Samoset
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_15.jpg&hash=44e49bec150b60ce264622642d79ff41f8666848)

And heres a map of Samoset, following Tarkus's method, hopefully to some success.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_13.jpg&hash=2f9848875ea942c28701a41bfcb66c57d2f364c3)

I'll try to stick to a weekly update schedule as much as possible, and look forward to sharing more of Nauset with you all. Next update will be on a similar town called Hanson, and a few other villages.

One of the other villages; South Samoset.

Wow, what a fantastic start!

First of all, I want to say thank you for giving us some background information. I think every MD needs at least some, because it gives so much more character. I can see right off the bat what you mean by this being an older city that needs to go through some infrastructure changes and improvements in the coming future. I live in a similar place!

When I first saw that transit map of yours and how you explained that there are many "winding routes" that go through the Nauset area, I immediately prayed "Please be using smooth-curved roads, please be using smooth-curved roads!", but I didn't really expect you to since most people haven't caught on. Yet when I scroll down, there they are! They make the town so much more pleasing to the eye than those jerky curves. You may also want to consider using smooth rail curves, as well. When STR is released, that would like nice in Nauset region as well!

Thanks for putting so much work into this. 'Looks like this one's a keeper!'

Hello Evanator

Ah. This is a nice journal. I like the first few pictures. Especially the small town where route 340 terminates at route 6. You wrote short captions for each picture. Things like that really brings a journal to life and all the more enjoyable for the rest of us. You've got a nice selection of custom content and curved roads to boot. Good start and good luck and welcome to SC4Devotion!!

And BANG, here is Nauset!

Fantastic. What a great start of a MD...
The first region pic already stole my heart, but the ones with the fields shown did it again.. I also like how you tell the story with the pictures, a comment with each of them.  And that Tarkussian map: congratulations... You don't beat the master himself yet, but Alex' better beware: you show talent

Title: Update 2
Post by: evanator on February 16, 2009, 06:18:10 PM
Hello everyone, sorry for the long wait between updates, I'll have more free time this week so update 2 part 2, should be along later this week. :) As you may guess from the prior sentence, this update is a rather large one, and so will be delivered in two separate parts; one focusing once again on Samoset, and the other on Hanson. 'Why not make them two separate updates?' you may ask, and the reason is that I feel as though the two towns are 'twins' so to speak and go best side by side. Well enough is enough, lets get on with it! ;D

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1615-58-09-79.jpg&hash=e779f4a3b9ac76d8a79d76ba561a25ecb8d9c87d)

Samoset has had a bit of a growth spurt since last update, and is encroaching on the surrounding farms. The new developments have a very 'suburban' feel to them, and make for nice places to live, despite their low wealth.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1616-12-20-81.jpg&hash=eecc16136e57276d4de511d7412dab6819ea73b2)

Another newly developed area on the opposite side of town.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1616-11-13-10.jpg&hash=c0cb14a7d92ad2cf6c8fd26f7b0f3625e2e50368)

I re-worked the railroads around Samoset using the wonderful FARR pieces. These are the results.

A common road crossing to the east.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1616-13-12-64.jpg&hash=f8f1df488d036f0ab352d39b720cdcb8404bce0a)

The Town Dump.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1616-14-06-26.jpg&hash=4be072f8da686f3a62aaffa6890cceca8633f770)

Now onto South Samoset, a semi-separate village to the southwest, It's squeezed between Route 45 20 and the tracks towards Hanson.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1616-09-11-29.jpg&hash=be202a152d250e46ca2950617759959f34e41e13)

It's also home to the new Mirant Power Plant. Greatly un-welcomed by the locals, the state strong armed the town into accepting its construction. The locals argued, 'Why build a power plant in the middle of no where?', to which the state replied, 'Why not?'. It's real reson however is that it envisions an industrial park being built over the farms in the near future.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1616-22-34-37.jpg&hash=b5e97556a54bad95e36e94f19ec2c25c9e038df9)

Here's where the trains come into Mirant Station, from Nauset to the west.

Here's a few more shots of the area for good measure.

A stretch of Route 45 20.

And now a first for the MD; a few night shots.

Workers leaving the industrial district.

Stay tuned for part 2!

The map is really good for a first attempt. The power plant in the middle of nowhere is quite ironic, even if it's entirely realstic. I can't wait to see your small town(s) expand. ;)

A very satisfying update you just gave us, and it's only half of it! I love your style. The choices of your houses are extremely unique, and they end up blending together very nicely. Your towns have a nice flow to them. Great work!

EDIT: I just wanted to say that after going through your update again, I noticed the gorgeous new graphic titles on your pictures. They look fantastic! It adds to the image in a wonderfully subtle way. Nice job on that!

Title: Update 2 Part 2
Post by: evanator on February 23, 2009, 03:31:20 PM
Hi everyone, sorry for the delay, but I'm here now with the rest of Update 2! This part of the update will focus solely on the town of Hanson, and the small village of South Hanson.
So without further adieu;

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1615-58-09-79.jpg&hash=e779f4a3b9ac76d8a79d76ba561a25ecb8d9c87d)

Some farmland to the north of town. The Highway winding through the farms is actually Route 6 coming down from Samoset.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1616-56-46-59.jpg&hash=5417b3365a08a5a210eecaaa6ff45f4a0731e89d)

The center of town, where Route 6 intersects Route 55. El Taco is a favorite amongst the locals with a flair for Mexican cuisine. Although it's more lively than the center of Samoset, it's still a pretty quiet place.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1617-05-47-76.jpg&hash=98d52964621b01639a60f7092ec7a5cf02616ce7)

Hanson, like Samoset is a relatively young town. Unlike Samoset however, which just sprang up along a busy junction, Hanson was founded for a specific purpose. Some time ago, there was a terrible fire that raged through the dense farmland for 5 days. When the smoke finally cleared 7 were found to have perished trying to douse the flames.

In response the state issued funds for Station 12 to be built near the junction of 6 and 55 in order to provide better response times to the farms, and perhaps prevent further tragedies. Upon it's completion, a town began to grow up around Station 12, and today there's even a fire fighters training building next store. Many tourists mistake the building for an apartment complex, but the locals know it's true purpose.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1617-07-43-17.jpg&hash=e6d77be2e5731a9390469e7046ea4743207cc465)

A water tower was also constructed to assist in putting fires out, the tower gives the town a certain charm that has contributed to it's rapid growth.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1617-04-27-76.jpg&hash=0af949664b8106005768d96889a2274bdd2047e2)

The south side of town eats into one of the many surrounding bean fields as you travel south towards South Hanson.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2Fnauset%2520update%25202%2FSimCity42009-02-1617-00-32-42.jpg&hash=3bac654463020d2f8c9cd52763a9194ac1f5b325)

Farms to the south of Hanson.

Here's where Route 55 crosses the train tracks just to the north of South Hanson.

And here's South Hanson itself, a few roads branching off of 55, the village sits on the burnt remains of one of the farms devastated beyond repair by the 5 Day Fire.

A few asides now;

It seems that the Department of Infrastructure made a rather large blooper on the last update and labeled pictures of Route 20 as Route 45!  :P The mistake has been corrected, and TDI apologizes for any inconvenience. :-[
I'm starting work on an older town called Fallon now, and seem to be having a bit of difficulty finding older 'new englandesque' buildings.

Any help/suggestions would be Greatly appreciated!

Finally, before replies, I've decided to let you decide what you want the next update to be! It can either be more from Hanson, for there's still plenty to show, or an introduction to Fallon, it's up to you!

Your updates are so big! I always have plenty to look at. ;)

Have you used the SmalltownUSA buildings yet? Those would probably help a lot. Oh, and I think the next update should be an introduction to Fallon. The concept sounds really interesting, and I can't wait to see it!

Fantastic update as always!  I really like the careful details around the farms.  Hanson is a neat looking town as well, I like how it's tucked between the railway and main road.

Post by: evanator on March 17, 2009, 07:04:22 PM
Hello All!  Once again, I'm really sorry about the lack of updates thus far in this MD. Things have been beyond busy lately, far busier than I had hoped they would be when I started this Diary. :bomb: It will get better I promise!  ;)

Well I started work on Fallon, but found it impossible to go on due to rampant R$ demand, and so began the main tile of Nauset itself. From there I got quite sidetracked into the city, but I do have every intention of going back to Fallon. Eventually... :P

So today a quick tease, and a taste of something different. I should have a proper update on the area later this week.(knock on wood)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_1.jpg&hash=0ffd43f33942e2060c522a61d515b1603f620d06)

The region I have been working on is called Iyannough named after the legendary Native American chief of the same name. It is one of Nauset's four main boroughs, and is home to a mostly R$ populace. The area is still very much in development

Iyannough Boulevard, cuts through the center of Iyannough, and is one of the more famous roads in Nauset.

Remember Route 340? The eastern end of it is in the town of Samoset:

Yet another excellent update!  Your urban center looks great here, with fantastic details.  I really like what you did in the second picture with that one farm or house with the thick grassy lot surrounded by suburban residential.  Looks like somebody didn't want to subdivide.
Title: Re: Nauset - Updated March 17th Iyannough
Post by: evanator on March 18, 2009, 04:51:01 PM
Another little teaser today. Route 45 runs through the dense landscape of Iyannough. The same Route 45 that the Department of Infrastructure confused with Route 20 in a previous update.

You can imagine their embarrassment seeing as how vastly different the two routes are.  :D

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_4-1.jpg&hash=252aa4ac064f9efc47a027f9b7b0dd81de7464c4)

The route traveling vertically across the picture is Route 525, just after it crosses the Scargo River. The divided highway ends at the Joseph Torrie Memorial Rotary, and 525 is lost in the dense cityscape.

Battlecat - Thanks, I really believe that 'the devil's in the details'. It's the details that make the game appear realistic, and bring it to life. The farm is actually the Theresa Bray farm, the first farm established in Samoset, some 250 years ago. The Historical Commission led a successful campaign to save it from suburban death!

Title: Update 3
Post by: evanator on April 05, 2009, 04:46:14 PM
After numerous CTD's while trying to save the final touches on Iyannough, I finally fixed the problem and have a full update for everyone!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FUpdateThreeTitle.jpg&hash=08067430e1fed077dc51be62e86ffec95197d530)

Here's where Route 525 crosses the Scargo River. The bridge to the left was just recently built, as the traffic became to heavy for the old two laned suspension bridge. 525 was made a four lane divided highway up until the Joseph Torrie Memorial Rotary. The city faced some opposition with the project, as some row homes had to be destroyed in the process.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0508-49-20-48.jpg&hash=70a5d7f0acce82c50e65a3363300b6223d4e2ab5)

Continuing along the marshy riverside, we arrive at the Smith-Scargo Nature Preserve. While not very large, it contains a variety of calm and relaxing trails, where one can escape from the rushed and hurried life of the city.   The park was originally established in 1927 when the Smith family bought up the land.
At the time Iyannough was developing at a breakneck pace, and the city limits were rapidly reaching outwards, fearing that all land would soon be overtaken, they decided to leave the land untouched, to save the nature for future generations. Two years later though the stock market crashed, and all development around Nauset stopped. Since then, not much has changed, and development has been very slow going for the past 80 years.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0509-01-56-59.jpg&hash=890803385da41cf235942b3cabc6e732f04995e5)

Here's one of three major intersections in Iyannough. From the right [east] is Route 340 which terminates at the intersection. Across the intersection, going west it becomes Iyannough Boulevard. Going North/South is Hokum Rock Parkway. [To the north, Hokum Rock Parkway also shares the title 'Route 340 Connector', as it connects 340 to Route 45 at the interchange.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_3.jpg&hash=c7162396cd0d40a70ed82ffc9fcb68ff3daafe15)

Here Smith street, terminates near the end of Hokum Rock Parkway/Route 340 Connector. The surrounding is home to mostly low density commercial.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0508-58-23-96.jpg&hash=c0d27353d76a1dec201312fa97c13aec02dee006)

Going Down Iyannough Boulevard now, we come across the historic, Our Lady of Nauset Church. The Church was the first built in Iyannough, and the third built in all of Nauset. The Church is a frequent site of horrible car wrecks, as it is situated in an extremely dangerous curve in the westbound boulevard. Locals use the term, 'wrecked on our lady' to describe such a car accident.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0508-54-02-96.jpg&hash=b8c340be4189d844f18530255be5d65fe9ecdea6)

Continuing on towards Route 525, we come across this little stretch of businesses. Just an example of what the landscape of Iyannough generally is. A sea of mid rise buildings, with a few islands of taller towers scattered throughout.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0509-08-04-56.jpg&hash=7149c6aeb1eeebc3a8b32d85d6b8ade55aa65760)

Finally we come to the Joseph Torrie Memorial Rotary. The Rotary is the scene of many snarling traffic jams, and it's only been made worse with the expansion of 525 into a four lane highway. In the bottom right 525 continues as a two lane road that twists and turns through Iyannough. It is reminiscent to how 525 between the rotary and the bridge was like before the expansion. Locals refer to the traffic monster of the Rotary as 'Jeet-mur' or 'JTMR'. It is the largest traffic circle yet built in Nauset. The upper spur splits and becomes Iyannough Boulevard.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0509-06-51-17.jpg&hash=c12fe7f032af5fc6d896015069f1b79c2ee19a28)

On Eastbound Iyannough Boulevard now, this gives another example of the general landscape of the borough.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0509-04-42-37.jpg&hash=e8b81fe3df6e86d453551bc5ac1e4f4bd532ee1c)

This group of businesses brings a much needed splash of color to the surroundings. In the background, you can see an  old row of rowhomes, built shortly after the Church in the 1880's.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0508-56-25-31.jpg&hash=f17892df640dbaf47ae49c39985c77e1d233bde6)

Finally here's a preview of the part of Iyannough that we'll be headed to in the next couple of updates.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-04-0509-09-09-50.jpg&hash=17fe60eec2bac29151d642e64000ed59c696da90)

Looks like a lot has happened since I last visited Nauset!

Iyannough is looking fabulous, Evan (Or at least I assume that's your name). It looks exactly like any old New England city, such as one outside of Boston or somewhere similar. What I found most fascinating about this update is the transportation network. It's obviously not very efficient, and that's the point, isn't it! The traffic-jams, twisting boulevards, tight streets, and everything in between are really nicely done. The various rowhomes and apartments pull everything together.

Great job, Evan!

Hi everyone! I'm just putting the final touches on an update which -barring any unforeseen misfortune- should be ready by the weekend at the latest. -crosses fingers-

Meanwhile I thought I'd just share a taste of what I've been up to:

This is the southern border of Iyannough, at Route 20. Across the highway is where downtown will eventually be situated. Route 20 winds it's way through Nauset, and at times it barely deserves to be called a highway. The Department of Infrastructure has long been working on a plan to widen and realign the highway as well as bring it up to standards.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSC_2-1.jpg&hash=a3fc350b50240188aa08172c898cf9c183e8416b)

I've also noticed that Nauset has gotten over 1000 page views! So I want to thank everyone that's visited so far, and hopefully welcome the next 1000!  ;D

Albus of Garaway - Thank you so much, and you are correct in guessing that my name is Evan. It's so great that you think it resembles a New England city, that's just the effect I'm going for! Thanks again for your constant support, its really appreciated.  :)

Scirius - Thank you Guillaume, I'm glad you like the city side of Nauset!

Battlecat - Thanks for all your support so far, its really, really appreciated. There's another park that's similar to that one which will be in the next update, I hope you'll enjoy it just as much!

P.S. I'm working on a new design for the update titles, something unifying and consistent. It's hardly final, and any feedback would be great!

Title: Nauset - Update Four - April 25th
Post by: evanator on April 25, 2009, 07:20:56 PM
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25204%2FUpdatefourtitle.jpg&hash=ef48e33bd504318569a6d4875558eb8f9e9662e0)

Today we'll be starting at the intersection of Route 340, Iyannough Boulevard, and Hokum Rock Parkway. From there we'll follow the parkway to Hokum Rock Park where we'll end at Morley Chapel. -Note, a little text heavy this time, I apologize in advance-

Here's the infamous intersection itself; Locals have long been calling for an overhaul of the area, but the Department of Infrastructure is currently consumed with the Downtown 45 Realignment, and Everett Power Facility Worker Transit Projects, so it's unlikely the situation will improve in the near future. The portion of Hokum Rock Parkway we'll be visiting today is to the south, (left).

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25204%2F401.jpg&hash=6883674a74c1287d395dc87c9506fbb7ee289c66)

Heading south along a slight valley, formerly a stream before it was filled in for urban expansion, the parkway narrows to two lanes. The parkway doesn't receive heavy traffic currently, but if need be in the future, there's plenty of room for widening.
The park trail on the right is an extension from Hokum Rock Park, the roadways namesake. The project went horribly over budget, as most of the money was spent cleaning the trash out of the back lots of the low wealth apartments, instead of building the park. With no money left, the Parks and Recreation department left what they had done so far, and never completed the project, leaving a less than desirable swath of land.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25204%2F402.jpg&hash=0308b35d6cf5c05b4d45f1ea81dab649135a22cb)

Further up the road we come to the new Police-Clinic civic center at the intersection with Irvin Road. The new station is fully operational and fills in a gap long left out of the Nauset Law Enforcement Department's range. The clinic is a major victory for the Nauset Citizens for New and Better Health Care, or the NCNBHC. Formed in 1984 to protest the closure of the 200 year old Nauset Hospital, due to slower growth and heavy budget cuts. The groups goals were good, but with such a long winded name they lost the attention of city officials before they even started their debate. After that failure the group became almost extremist in it's desire for better health care, and is still under investigation for two murders.
Recently though, under new leadership, the group has thrown off it's violent history, and made considerable progress in improving the average Nauseteer's health. The police station right next store though remains a reminder of the organization's dark past.

Past the intersection we come within sight of the rock itself, but before that we come to the Parkway's namesake: Hokum Rock Park. The park is divided by the railroad into two parts; Hokum Rock Park North (shown below) and Hokum Rock Park South. This is a prime example of what the Parks and Recreation Department can accomplish when it's fully funded. The park's tree lined, winding paths and it's meadow-like clearings bring the illusion of the countryside to the city. If Nauset receives some of the stimulus money (which it's inhabitants believe their rightly entitled to), then a proposal has been made to finish the pathway to the north and extend it all the way to the Smith Scargo River Preserve, and thus connecting a wide swath of parkland throughout Iyannough.

The park continues along Irvin Street until it meets the businesses and apartments lining Shepard Street.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25204%2F405.jpg&hash=f40726cf1a0a53a9a19f436036972f6239215e38)

Finally, at last we come to the rock itself, Hokum Rock, that is. Nestled between the road and rails, and situated across from the heavy industry region, the rock is a testament to the city's roots and to the history of the area. Legend has it that the rock got it's name from a wise old Native American who used to live about the rock. Resistant to learning proper English, and an avid preserver of tradition and Native culture, the wise man secluded himself from the rest of the Nauset tribe when they began to accept the new settler's ways. Whenever anyone happened to chance by the rock, he would shout out, "Who Come?", or in his garbled English, "Ho-Kum". Thus the rock is named, after a great preserver of the past, and life before the white men came across the sea.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25204%2F406.jpg&hash=4b3091d7b0cebad42468563bc8d9dfdb13c52fbe)

Crossing the tracks, we come to the larger Hokum Rock Park South. This side of the park features much of the same 'country' feel as the north side. The south side however has two treasures, Guppy Pond, and more importantly, Morley Chapel. Morley Chapel is a quaint wooden chapel that lies in the middle of the park. Constructed in 1856 the Chapel has played host to many local celebrity weddings, including those of Carl Hammond and Jennifer Rosalie, and John Scoddard and Melanie Trance.
It is rumored that it's architect Jacob Morley built a sister church somewhere in the country, where his wife and himself are buried. When it was revealed by his grandson's dying wish, that the sister church lay in fact in the Nauset area, it sparked a cottage industry of avid explorers, historians and entrepreneurs all searching for the lost church. Although no one has found it, the thrill of discovery lives on, with everyone hoping that they'll be the one to discover it.

Hokum Rock Parkway ends when it reaches the busy thoroughfare of Route 320. 320 wraps around the edge of the south park, and intersects with Drake Street near Morley Chapel.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25204%2F408.jpg&hash=ab9b098d5be416fcc0eaf3c47cd1df412652873f)

Here's a view of the south park and Guppy Pond along Drake Street. Spotlights set Morley Chapel aglow amid the surrounding trees.

Here's the north park by Irvin Street at dusk. Looks as though a pretty bad multi-car accident has just occurred, sending a few cars spiraling off the road into the surrounding flower fields.

A peaceful shot of Hokum Rock Park as an Amtrak train cruises on and out of the city, it's destination most likely the city of Narragansett.

Next update we'll continue along Drake Street and be back into the thick of Iyannough. Here's where the rails cross Drake Street by the western corner of the south park.

I love Nauset. :)

I mean, what else can I say? It's so welcoming, it's as if it is begging me to feast my eyes upon its twisting streets, jumbled buildings, busy highways, and old brick apartments. It reminds me so much of so many places I've been and seen. I love, love, love it!

Hokum rock is really nice looking. The way you arranged those rocks is perfect, although it's a shame to see the industry right next to it...but hey, that's how life works sometimes. Also, that medical group sounds scary. I understand protests, but murders?! They must really be into their cause. ;)

Today's update brings us back into the dense urban landscape of Iyannough after last update's walk in the park. We'll be visiting the home of the great Attucks Murray, Ampleforth Square and Station, as well as the cedar Street Public School. Alright now let's get to it!

Nestled among much younger buildings, The Attucks Murray House, built 1743 and recently restored to it's past glory, stands proudly on Ridley Street. Attucks Murray is a local hero of the Revolutionary War. Bold and unpredictable he is a character whose personality has become as much a part of Nauset as the twisting streets and beautiful parks.
233 years ago on January 17th 1776, Attucks Murray, and three friends managed to capture three British soldiers in an alleyway on Milton Street. The British had captured Nauset shortly after the war began and with Washington  bogged down at Valley Forge, liberation seemed a far off thought. The crafty Attucks took the captured British uniforms and disguised himself and his friends as red coats. They waited until nightfall when the British guard was set at it's lowest and snuck aboard The British ship The Manchester docked in the harbor. Once aboard they went below decks and freed three colonial prisoners to be executed the next day. No one quite knows how he did it, but he managed to get everyone off the boat and back into the city without the British alarm being raised. Attucks was praised as a hero and a leader who they could rally around.
Unfortunately he was captured two days later and hung from the top of the mast of The Manchester as a warning from the British. The warning was not heeded however, and the hanging of Attucks led to the Nauset Insurrection. The Insurrection and it's consequences will be discussed in future updates.
The house was an extremely modern design for he era, a reflection on Atucks's personality. It became a national historic site in 1885, and was restored a hundred years later in 1985. To the far left of the picture is Drake Street which we will be following for most of the update.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F501.jpg&hash=a49e2360075796ba86f56225b201513797d3af56)

Here you can see the results of recent Parks and Recreation Department projects. The lots were not too long ago abandoned, condemned buildings, but they have been transformed into neighborhood gathering places, and have unified the local residents. Ridley Street comes from the left and meets Hyde Street at Hyde Street Park.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F502.jpg&hash=bb25d514d6b2945805e2accd2591a9088df08252)

Here's the intersection where Irvin Street, on the right, and Hyde Street, on the left intersect with Steven Street. The mid-rise apartments in the area are the results of an affordable housing plan that transformed old row homes into low wealth apartments.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F503.jpg&hash=80db09e22073c92e38de2f8fdec717ca4fc92a50)

If you follow Steven Street past the intersection and around the bend you'll arrive at the familiar sight of Iyannough Boulevard.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F504.jpg&hash=a50f0f4befb784b5d1229ebf7990fb68691e7437)

Heading back along Drake Street, as we approach Ampleforth Square, we come across Captain Jack's restaurant. When locals hear that Nauset has a Captain Jack's, they usually scour the riverfront in search of it. They are quite surprised to findout however that the restaurant is in fact no where near the river, but right here.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F505.jpg&hash=b5caba3e54aacdb93b277c44956c7f6b824da39e)

Going past Ampleforth Square for a moment we head down Ample Way, and take a left onto Railroad Avenue and come to Ampleforth Station. The station, the second oldest in Nauset, was recently upgraded to handle two more tracks due to it's heavy usage. The station is the principle and busiest station in Iyannough. The upgrade also included, much to the locals delight, new sound walls to minimize the impact of the increased train traffic. The crossing on Ample Way remains unfixed however, and it is one of the most dangerous in all of Nauset.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F506.jpg&hash=420a3bc57b7b2b73084a482cfadcae77bbc09a43)

Just north of the square is the Cedar Street Public School. The school features grades K-12 and also has a developing preschool program. It is one of three schools in Iyannough.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F507.jpg&hash=c4ae0f7068d5581a16c134f489f1b986cdab20fe)

Here at last is Ampleforth Square. Named after the great Abbey in York, England. Residents have no the slightest idea why the square is named after it, as it bears almost no resemblance to it's English namesake nor is it even a square. Running straight through the square is Drake Street. Ample Way goes off to the right and over the tracks, and Girding Road bears off parallel to the tracks. At nigh the square has a pleasant atmosphere which is unfortunately commonly disturbed by the noise of passing trains.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F508.jpg&hash=15d9f9c9cc8ff4df1a0c5c15097fba1c2dce2612)

Continuing along Drake Street, and turning around the bend, we come across more low and medium wealth apartment complexes.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F509.jpg&hash=4033bc6bc3b2dc35842c8a5f00da07827ed2f4fd)

At last Drake Street terminates at, what do you know? Iyannough Boulevard, upper picture. Here the Boulevard has consolidated as it approaches the Joseph Torrie Memorial Rotary.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F510.jpg&hash=0ac580d924816d912b0073a6874f39814252f03b)

Here's a neighborhood near the Cedar Street Public School. Chestnut Drive runs across the picture.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F511.jpg&hash=baa3c174ba18a58bd619de0eae96e1431e89c798)

Lastly, to finish up this update, here's a night shot overview of the area near Steven Street, with Hokum Rock Park off to the left.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25205%2F512.jpg&hash=c37162328097dec8956774a0135ac577c3a31149)

Albus of Garaway - Wow, I don't know what to say! I'm glad you like Nauset so much, hopefully you'll enjoy this update because it's full of twisting streets and old brick apartments. Thanks again my friend for your constant support!
Sciurus - Guillaume, thanks for stopping by again! I like doing the fine detailing, as I really think it makes the difference between realism and non-realism. I also love that church, it's very similar to one right near me!

Till next time... -Evan

Hey everyone, I have the next update almost ready, and will probably post it by Monday at the latest. Update 6 follows the twists and turns of a good number of roads, so I thought, 'Why not make a map so no one gets lost?'. 'Well, that's a great idea!' I said to myself. And so I spent the better part of the afternoon on this:

http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z11/evanat0rr/Update6Mapfinal.png

It's extra large so I wont post it here until I can figure out how to post a thumbnail that link directly to it. It includes all the notable places we've visited, plus some from the coming update. All the roads I've mentioned by name are labeled, as well as the roads we'll be traveling down in Update 6. It will be expanded and filled out as I finalize more of the city.

Also, Nauset nearly has 1500 page views, and has over 40 comments, all in under 3 months! I just want to thank everyone whose been here, even if you haven't posted. Your support means a ton to me, and it keeps my motivation up. Thanks!  :)

That's a good looking map you have there. I can't believe I haven't looked at this before, and I must say, you've been doing a terrific job with this journal. You seem to have a talent for mixing Maxis and custom content. Whatever it is you're doing to achieve this kind of quality, keep doing it!

Nice map, Evan.  I really like the detailing and the thought you've put into naming things.  The attention Nauset is getting is well-deserved.

OK very very cool MD.

Really like the small town ones.

I have a few questions for you though.

What ground texture pack do you use? i see alot of people using this.

How do you achive the curved roads and rail?

What realistic water plugin are you using?

and last how do you get your avenues to look so cool.? i want them!!

Thanks and keep up the amazing work mate!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2FUpdate6title.jpg&hash=99e88bb2152e000c3305c1d0cb6e356b40bd2dce)
Today's update finally brings us across Route 525, and into northwestern Iyannough. So far, the last three Iyannough updates have kept us east of 525, but no longer! Here's a rough map of northern Iyannough so you can sense of direction: linkie (http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z11/evanat0rr/Update6Mapfinal.png)

This is the intersection of 525 and Samoset Street. You may remember a Samoset Street in the town of Samoset itself, but this street is in no way related. Many roads in Nauset are named after the surrounding towns and villages, and so this one is named after the town of Samoset. Route 525 comes up from the bottom after going around the Joseph Torrie Memorial Rotary, AKA JTMR. 525 then turns to the left and is carried down Samoset Street, which runs across the picture.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F601.jpg&hash=cc23c890b6edbf86881de4a0f5de6334de5f687b)

We'll take a right and leave 525 behind as we follow Samoset Street north towards Route 45.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F602.jpg&hash=2ebfc74184fa86e00d6e28e73843bb32c4001cf9)

Before we cross the highway we'll go down a few back roads and visit the Swanson Inn. Built in 1952, the Inn was one of many developments in the area at the time which were constructed in an attempt to rejuvenate the area, and attract wealthier citizens. Also built around the same time were new police and fire stations, as well as the R.T. MacArthur School. Ultimately the initiative failed, and the area remained as poor as ever. The Inn was the preferred hotel of Americrat Party members when the Americrat National Convention was hosted in Nauset in 1988. The Convention became well known for George M. Erican's speech in which he said, "Read my lips, I will get rid of taxes." The statement got him elected, but once he realized taxes were the source of government revenue, he had to go back on his promise. Today the Inn is still in operation, and it stands in gaudy contrast to it's surroundings.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F603.jpg&hash=85ba8c1085670fbb9fde3441676364675ce3d20f)

Past the highway Samoset Street ends in an awkward curve near the river, where it becomes River Street. Route 525 can be seen in the top right as it crosses the Scargo River.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F604.jpg&hash=07133b4a11254a36a349b137ed43a12838190b15)

Further down we come to this awkward intersection. While the roadway has a sharp turn and goes back under the highway into Central Iyannough, River Street continues alongside the river. We'll bear right, and follow River Street. The area between Route 45 and the river has come to be known as North Riverside. Cut off from the rest of Iyannough when the elevated Highway was built in 1955 it has developed, or should I say hasn't, differently from the rest of Iyannough. The area features many old row homes, with just a few newer apartments mixed in.

One of the newer apartments, called River Street Residences, is shown here. You can alos see how River Street twists its way along the riverfront.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F606.jpg&hash=13c861b2234021f4e76789d53995f3eaec8ef678)

Another such apartment building among the monotonous old row homes.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F607.jpg&hash=29506139ebea58eb4ca7d4ba02e998c8ef55c334)

Here River Street has a sharp turn and ends. Lansdowne Street, upper center, becomes a major roadway and crosses under Route 45 at Exit 20.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F608.jpg&hash=3084d83813f4c5b025f4ae21b360429c8d311ce5)

We follow Lansdowne Street into the tangled web of intersection roads which is Lansdowne Square. In all Six different roadways meet in the 'square'. The Main one is Lansdowne Street which comes into the square on a diagonal from the bottom right, goes through square and exits in the upper left. The three other main roads are (going counterclockwise from where Lansdowne Street enters in the bottom right) Wesley Avenue, Dartmouth Drive, and the main road going to the left, which we'll be taking, Stanley Street.
The square is a crowded and chaotic place which serves as a gathering place for those living in the surrounding neighborhoods. It has also been voted Iyannough's 'Most Confusing Intersection' by readers of the Nauset Cornucopia.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F609.jpg&hash=3b39a0163b146ccbdbfe72f2276810d01cf28946)

Following Stanley Street we come to the intersection with Murphy Road, and the R.T. MacArthur Public School. The school, despite being over 50 years old is surprisingly well maintained, due to the continued supprt of the MacArthur family. Richard Tungstell MacArthur was the man who came up with the 1950's revitalization plan that included the Swanson Inn. Although his dream of renewal was never realized, his name lives on indefinitely through the school.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F610.jpg&hash=bdcdc1edd8825786eed448c764a68b549672804b)

Continuing along Stanley Street, we arrive at the Stanley Street Park. Another Parks and Recreation Department success story, the park was overhauled five years ago, and the result is this rose amongst the surrounding thorns.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F611.jpg&hash=8a8a50add2491f0eea24c864cc1e2d0544fcc85b)

At last we arrive at Exit 21. Stanley Street goes under the highway and through the interchange where it connects with River Street on the other side.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F612.jpg&hash=34864105e13526952f373a927feff7ee051116a8)

Heading back, and taking a turn onto Murphy Road we can see the new apartments built around the school. Since Nauset lacks a reliable bus service, the closer kids live to the school, the better.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F613.jpg&hash=5ad252dda89ebd6ede25c170166cafc1ac143f83)

If you follow Murphy Street to it's end, you'll find yourself at Route 525/Samoset Street once again (left side), completing our circle-ish tour of this region of Iyannough.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F614.jpg&hash=4ce242467e07c5ad6ce6a471c5e1f86bdbde9294)

What would this update be without a few night shots? Well fortunately we'll never find out as here's a neighborhood near the R.T. MacArthur School.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25206%2F615.jpg&hash=0b550830c27e18573a896bd379a08339c169c114)

Finally, next update we'll be returning to Ampleforth Square where we'll start our tour of the remainder of northern Iyannough.

Albus of Garaway - Thanks for stopping by again, and unfortunately that sight is a frequent accident spot, so injuries are common.

Guillaume(Sciurus) - Thanks I try to make it as appealing as possible while retaining the dirty, poor reality of the region. As for Nauset being in America, yes it is, which part though I'm not entirely sure.

TopCliff - Thanks for your nice comment, i try and mix in Maxis buildings a lot, as I think that some of them are actually quite good!  :D

David(Dedgren) - Thanks again for stopping by, your support is extremely appreciated David!

pete3d - Thanks, I hope I haven't kept you waiting too long!

evertonforever1 - Hi, thanks for your comment. As for the terrain mod I'm using, its the Italia terrain mod by the wonderful c.p.. It can be found on the LEX here. (linkie) (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1527) The curved roads and rails are the Fractional Angle Roads/Railroads, and can be found in the latest NAM here.(linkie) (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=851) The water mod I am using is by the fantastic Mas71 and can be found here,(linkie) (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2042) It's the second one in the pack.

danielcote - Thanks you live somewhere on the East Coast I presume?

Till next time... -Evan

I just love the planning and archetecture that goes into this city!

No actually I live in Edmonton AB I was refering to how similsr youre towns are to mine on sc4. I mean you have a heck of alot of buildings that I have and you build youre cities the same too. Saddly edmonton isnt that beautiful all its down town is is grass the city hall parking lots a big downtown center mall and a bunch of ugly 60's 70's 80's buildings.  ()sad() it just isnt like it used to be sigh  /wrrd%&

Having been away from Nauset way to long... but catched up today. I realy like what you are doing there. Especially the ambiance shown in the April 24th update carried me away.... for some reason that picture and the 1st one in the next update (Iyannough/Hokum Rock) are realy appealing.. don't exactly now what it is but I like it - a lot!  :satisfied:

Hi all. It's been a very busy weekend, and by the looks of it, it will be a very hectic week, so the next update won't be coming as soon as I had hoped.  &mmm
In the mean time though, here's a shot of the area I just started working on near Hokum Rock Park. As you can see its in it's very early stages, but I think it's coming along quite nicely.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-05-1021-14-53-90.jpg&hash=04028399b1ee0c7e3a1f1a29e371825932967a3f)

P.S. Thanks everyone for your comments! I'll get to them when Update 7 is posted. I haven't forgotten you, and your feedback and support is really appreciated!  :)

I've missed some great updates here.  Still looks fantastic!  Your urban areas look quite cool.  That preview shot looks nice, I'm looking forward to the finished version.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2FUpdatesevenimage.jpg&hash=4359133102842f2feead525bca284a44dc074319)
Today's update will start at Ampleforth Square, and we'll travel down Girding Road, where we'll begin our tour of the last area of Iyannough squeezed between Route 45 and the railway tracks. This update also features a majority of night shots as an experiment, hope you enjoy it!

Here's a 3rd generation map (http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z11/evanat0rr/g3379.png) to help you get your bearings. I'm quite pleased with this style, and will hopefully not have to change it again.

Here's Girding Road. Just to the right, the park trails lead to Ampleforth Square. Roule Hill is one of a few hills in Iyannough that break up the flat terrain. Unfortunately Roule Hill, and most others in Nauset have lost their former grandeur, as they have been leveled out by the centuries building on them.
The entire area is a little strange. For one, the yellow house that sits among the row homes and apartments has long been a mystery to residents, and perhaps forever will. Also Roule Park is right next to the busy railway, and there isn't even a fence to keep unsuspecting pedestrians out of harms way. Luckily no one has ever been injured here, but residents still are lobbying for a fence to be put up.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F701.jpg&hash=4f084a5a83148c383e823530db2ac6012d573663)

Here's some of the buildings in the Roule Hill area. As you can see the dense urban environment has obscured the Hill over the years.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F702.jpg&hash=b020d4da7def035e037588ed64f1356eacb59ebe)

This is where Route 525/Samoset Street crosses the railway. Due to the overly awkward turns in the roadway near the crossing, this is Iyannough's most dangerous rail crossing. The nearby traffic light at the Lansdowne Street intersection only complicates the situation further.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F703.jpg&hash=9b72c3e22488afbba4cb8dd0f26f918573941bef)

For the first night shot, this is along Lansdowne Street, just west of its termination at Route 525.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F704.jpg&hash=7fe0ba4100b534de7aa81dfb2ba1910bd88dfa0a)

A shot of the same area from a different angle, and during the day. As you can see, this neighborhood backs right up onto the train tracks.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F705.jpg&hash=34cf0be5889941cf85d1139ba7414f9ee992526d)

Moving along Lansdowne Street, here is where Pompano Road branches off and goes toward North Riverside. We'll follow Pompano Road and explore more of North Riverside next update.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F706.jpg&hash=6e88714462d631e17bce145fbb5c266a3fd1991d)

Heres a mix of apartment buildings between Lansdowne and Stanley Streets, near Lansdowne Square. There's something I really like about this shot, it gives a good sense of what this area of Nauset is like, a jumble of buildings and styles, an American melting pot.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F707.jpg&hash=c1eb16586c7f032acf818dfb18fb546d186ad878)

Nearby is Lansdowne Square. Here's a shot looking down Dartmouth Drive.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F708.jpg&hash=0ec08415777990de708c449adfb77634505e9542)

A stretch of Dartmouth Drive, between the square and where it goes under the highway.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F709.jpg&hash=fc55312395c2d186aa59d97bbe8ea7bc727ae45b)

A night shot of the area between Lansdowne Street, Dartmouth Drive, Route 45 and Pompano Road.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F710.jpg&hash=80bfedfd0f0eac270b870c2a2bba01189189d036)

Here's a shot at dusk of the intersection between Pompano and Hyannis Roads. I edited it in the gimp, and am not really entirely happy with it. The color seems off, yet I don't know which way it needs to be adjusted.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F711.jpg&hash=bc1bf607e355ae803b64bb491389bc67e7822129)

A shot of another rail side neighborhood, west of Hyannis Road.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Upsate%25207%2F712.jpg&hash=6cd6db16f7b7018f07b62b5f44a5fe8dcabbdce4)

Finally, to close out the update, a shot of the Leonard Staag Building. We'll be continuing across the highway on Pompano Road next time.

Topcliff - Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it. About the tan midrise, I thought that I had gotten it from JBSimio's wonderful creations, but when I went back, I couldn't find it! I do believe I downloaded it on the LEX, and will have to look into my plugins folder. Sorry!

Guillaume(Sciurus) - Thanks for your compliment, and for stopping by again!

danielcote - Thanks, I try to do limited planning, and mostly just see where the city takes itself, with a few nudges here and there. I know how you feel, the main street in my town had it's boom in the 60's and is now all run down.

                - Thanks for your comment, and for stopping by again!

sebes
- Thanks for swinging by again, and for your compliment!

Nexis4Jersey - Thanks for your comment!

evertonforever - Thanks for your comment, and congratulations on your new pc. Hope to be seeing your MD soon!

Battlecat
- Thanks for passing by again! I appeciate your support and comments. As for that area, if everything goes to plan, we'll get to visit it around update 11 or 12.

Till next time...  Evan

Another great update.  That one intersection looks quite dangerous indeed, what with the blind corner.  Jaywalking there would be quite hazardous.

I like what you did with those trails there in the first picture.  Which set is that?

hold up, I wasn't talking about you're downtown I was talking about my RL cities downtown Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. You're downtown is nice.

I really like dart mouth drive and the highway seams to contrast well.

This is actually my favorite MD.  Probably because it is exaclty how i like my cities.

What Park Path Set are you using?  I really l;ike your parks winding inbetween different neigbourhoods.

In today's update we'll cross Route 45, and return to the North Riverside region for the last time for awhile. In the process, we'll conclude the tour of all of Iyannough north of the rail line, and so I have a special (hopefully) surprise at the end. Heres a map (http://i193.photobucket.com/albums/z11/evanat0rr/g3379.png) of the area. So let's get to it!

Here's a shot of the shoreline of the Scargo River by Exit 18. In the upper right is Landowne Street/ River Street. River Street curves off north to the area seen in Update 6, while Lansdowne Street continues on as a minor road before it curves and terminates at Wesley Avenue by Exit 19.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F801.jpg&hash=506651536506073307f8f61436416df49fc9a204)

You may wonder, as many do, why Exits 18 and 19 are literally mere meters from each other. The answer is that Exit 19 was an afterthought exit. As traffic became a nightmare in Lansdowne Square, Exit 18 was being used far more than intended. Therefore the the half-exit Exit 19 was created to allow easy access to people coming from North Riverside, and going downtown, without the need to go through the square.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F802.jpg&hash=5c43069a2b0541cd273bcdb505e23642941301a0)

The same area from a different vantage point, looking northwest towards the river.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F803.jpg&hash=5732a5f3871f0f5a9d431f402f6c9e7fdbb3a0f3)

Here you can see that development starts to die off as we approach Pompano Point to the west. The row homes here are generally nicer than in other parts of Iyannough, reflecting the area's greater wealth.

Recently a number of mid-rise buildings have sprung up in between Wesley Avenue, and Route 45. Here's a shot of them off Wesley Avenue facing northeast.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F805.jpg&hash=c199c7b5f6b05b6fd1457556af4826349422e446)

Taking a right on Pompano Road we come to the Wesley Gearson Memorial Plaza. The namesake of Wesley Avenue was a prominent figure of local 19th century life in Nauset. While no one really knows what he actually did, he is immortalized in a statue here anyways.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F806.jpg&hash=ccf5dae69fe28c7ee388886447c042ac121ab4b8)

As we follow Pompano Road down to Pompano Point, the hulking monument of the Pompano Residences building appears. The recently constructed apartment tower takes advantage of the splendid views of the river to the north and west, Iyannough to the east, and the far off skyscrapers of downtown to the south.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F807.jpg&hash=251415bede499f5ddcd28859b6ec0b4fb82d3e12)

The trail to Pompano Point. The point is little more than a sandbar created by the movement of the river, but it serves as a nice retreat to nature from the hectic city life. To the right the river current rushes by, but the the left the water is stagnant and marshy, giving the area a unique ambiance.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F808.jpg&hash=7786787149bc5c1423d9f9d3220e715c5f5210a9)

Where the trail, and several others begin and a parking area for those outdoors enthusiasts. Here Pompano Road ends in a roundabout before the marsh.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F809.jpg&hash=7523524b6448aa8a76b82b60e8c08de5732c552d)

Continuing along the marshy riverside we come to this neighborhood, backed right against the marsh side.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F810.jpg&hash=c756ed930a46af4dafb5b1624ccd45f244016d59)

Going around the roundabout we head back along Pompano Road going east. Some small commercial development lines the roadway here.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F811.jpg&hash=a77fceb55b709d76878eb114b1db452778d6953d)

Here's where Dartmouth Drive crosses under Route 45 and heads into the commercial lined Dartmouth Square.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F812.jpg&hash=c5509ef6aa2a023c99b25a3a6d2c5dac3ec0ea18)

Here is Dartmouth Square. Pompano Road runs vertically through and eventually ends up terminating at Lansdowne Street if followed under the highway. Dartmouth Drive continues on south past the square towards the 'wasteland'.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F813.jpg&hash=266eff17a772be0e8efebcac38ee99abab38872b)

Some new commercial development across from a neighborhood on Dartmouth Drive.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F814.jpg&hash=90f3d36a94321caa128ca607d4ea0d5d1b6768ff)

The Sim Trust Bank seems to have a hankering for Nauset. It's branches are all over the place, with this being one of them. Needing more space, it seems they forwent hiring an architect, and simply built the same building over again, and connected them all together! In all seriousness though, does anybody know of a lot/lots that could replace the monopoly of this building? It's a great building, but it grows far too much for my liking.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F815.jpg&hash=699d6a4e63ea66d5583a5ad96adcfb616780d918)

Here at last is the 'wasteland'. This whole area used to be low income neighborhoods, besides the train station, until the city council approved the 'Route 45 Realignment and Infrastructure Consolidation Project' of 'RRICP'. The project, costing millions, is currently 1/3 of the way complete. The area has been cleared, the temporary parking lots and roadways have been constructed and the brand new Department of Infrastructure Tower is complete.
The second part of the project, slated to begin soon, involves more neighborhood destruction, and the realignment of the railways that intersect here. The DOI Tower will eventually be the hub of the area, but now it sits as a bleak tombstone over the graveyard of the wasteland that it has created. When completed, there will be rail, bus, and ferry access all bundled together. The elevated Avenue in the right of the picture is the last bit of Route 320.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F816.jpg&hash=89e886a83a88ea5729d66391994c8617bcb7da9a)

As you can see some of the project zone borders the marsh, and so workewrs are constantly battleing the mud and gunk as they work. After the rail bridge the marsh ceases, and the clean riverbank returns. The bridge is also being considered to be replaced, for although it has a draw bridge in the center, it severly limits commercial and industrial activity along the river.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FNauset%2520Update%25208%2F817.jpg&hash=d558acb1cd815662d796aa935c55d2ffeb6cc746)

And finally, the surprise: a mosaic! Starting at Pompano Point, it goes through some hopefully farmiliar areas, until it reaches the Joseph Torrie Memorial Rotary. A first for Nauset, so enjoy!

Battlecat - Thanks for your comment! The park set is the wonderful SFBT medium welath set, found here. (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=797) Unfortunately a good portion of the lots, the orthogonal ones, are for some reason inaccessible from the install.  :(

danielcote
- No fear friend, I was also talking about my real life downtown, or main street! Also thanks for your comments!

evertonforever1 - Thanks! To think that this mere MD of mine could be someone's favorite is overwhelming! :) As I mentioned to Battlecat, the SFBT park set can be found here (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=797) , minus the inaccessible pieces.

Till next time...     -Evan

P.S. The mosaic unfortunately didn't upload to photobucket full size, due to their file size limits, and switching to a different file type only compromises the quality, so I apologize that it's slightly smaller than it should be!

Well I've been working on Update Nine which should be released within the week, probably more towards the end of next week, as I have finals approaching. The update will feature the area around Route 320 in central Iyannough.
I do however have a few pictures to tide over until then:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-05-2818-55-04-92.jpg&hash=61495bc895eb1eb79028623a342b0fe49010b0b6)

This is Route 320 as it rounds a bend and becomes Gossamer Avenue.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz11%2Fevanat0rr%2FSimCity42009-05-2517-28-13-70.jpg&hash=8a10266c85e8f02e6a3e98cfca3b0442b9461f0d)

Gossamer Road splits off from 320 at the bend and crosses over Route 20. Here crews begin work on the Gossamer Road/Exit 5 Project, which we will be following in full in a later update.

evertonforever1 - Thanks, Pompano Residences is one of the things I like about the 'growing' in SC4. It just grew up there amongst all the low rise homes, and I like it! As for the river side texture, its just the default one from the Italia Terrain mod, (linkie) (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1527).

Battlecat
- Thank you! Such a comment coming from the king of detailing himself is a high honor indeed. Thanks for stopping by again friend.

Topcliff - I have found that tan mid rise you asked about. It is the Badger Row tower made by none other than the fantastic SimGoober! And can be found here (linkie) (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=1543).

A nicely thought out MD you have here! On the most recent update, I especially like where the marshy areas/foliage meet the urban ones, like the 'riverside homes' screenshot. Good job on your well made map too.
