Title: GLR in road puzzle peices
Post by: screamingman12 on March 11, 2007, 03:29:49 PM
I have decided to try my luck with making puzzle peice networks, so I decided to first make a GLR in road peice:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg106.imageshack.us%2Fimg106%2F5897%2Fglrinroadpicvf5.png&hash=465e986a4d76057ce9c015df3bfefc9fe8679bfd)

basically the idea is to make an avenue, but have the two inner lanes reserved for GLR trains, with tracks instead of asphalt. so far, I only need to add the trolley wire (yes, trolley wire) and resize that tree that Brenda_XNE made so that it will fit.

Well the puzzle pieces for the GLR are mostly just texture.
The best of luck with the trolley wire.

Was thinking of doing some myself, but never got around to it, because I never got an overview of all the needed pieces.

vester is right.  All the single tile pieces I've done have been just completely flat planes with textures.  That should actually save you a lot of time.  Best of luck!  ;)

This can prove very complicated. It's not just textures, it's puzzle pieces development.
It may be feasible, as NAM already contains some double decker road/el pieces (GLR is ground level el).
I always wanted to make this, but I'm completely noob in networks modding.
Maybe reconsider the concept, I think it should be better to have two lanes in each avenue direction and put the GLR track in the median.
But let's see what has to be done:
1. First of all, a minimal set should include at least the following pieces:
   a. Two straight pieces, one with streetlights and one without, or alternatively one puzzle piece with a streetlight at the one side (the player will have to rotate half of the pieces by 180° to achieve an alternating effect).
   b. Two terminator pieces, ie the GLR track exiting the avenue from the left and the right side; they should connect to straight avenue and GLR pieces. You may also consider making another two terminator pieces with the GLR track exiting the avenue diagonally (these should connect to diagonal GLR puzzle pieces).
   c. Intersection pieces (X andf T) with road, street and oneway roads (otherwise no other networks could cross or connect to this avenue, and the result wouldl be an unusable long straight network). For T intersections you need two types of puzzle pieces, one that connects with the one direction only and one that connects with both.
2. You also you have to check clearances, i think there is enough space in the median for GLR tracks. GLR paths are +/-2.00 units (meters) off the track tiles' centre, and this means that they need 4.00 meters clearance, ie 1/4 of a tile. This overlaps slightly with the inner lane of the avenue texture, BUT if you look carefully, you will see that the inner lane is more wide than the outer, so I think it will be possible to accomodate all three paths in each direction (plus the sidewalk for pedestrians).
3. Streetlights must also be changed, you can no longer have those double ("offest" type) streetlights in the median, you must instead use highway-type streetlights (placed on the sidewalks), or alternatively the "banner"-type streetlights (like in high-wealth avenues).

Good luck with this.
Unfortunately I'm not in position to help, maybe ask Swamper77.

Welcome to update number two!

Here are some more shots, I resized the tree and installed the trolley wire and trolley poles:

I moved the tree to the side to show the trolley wire.

If someone (possibly Vester) couild give me a tram prop to check the height of these wires, it would be greatly appreciated.

Tthe peices I plan to make:

1) the "staple" peices: 1x2 streight, 2x2 90-degree corner, and a 3x1 transtion peice (GLR in ave to GLR and road)
2) the intersections, + and T
3) misc. a 2x2 loop peice

possibly more peices coming.

Also, now that the models are about done, what do I do next? I have no prior experience with either BATing or GMAX, I suppose I texture it, but what then?

This looks like another fantastic project that will revolutionize things! Can't wait to see more development!

Okay, bad news first: I took the wrong approach to creating these, they will probably be postponed until I can contact someone woho knows how to make these, find a tutorial, or some combination of both.  :-[  Also, the NAM team is testing the same basic concept, so we may see this in a different form soon.

Good News:But until then, these are far from dead!

Dragonshardz, please don't bother to resurrect threads like this one, unless you have something useful to post, it was 3 months since the last post.
Thanks

Dr pepper: as i have mentioned to you in a previous thread:

DrPepper: As a kindly reminder Projects will be updated pending on its high priority list. At the moment We are mainly focusing on the RHW and TLA Project. When the time arises we will update this thread when we have updates. I do hope you come back and check back but RL comes first this second and when projects have not been updated, that means we are focusing on other projects. Thank you and come back again.
