Title: Genevra Redux (v2.0)
Post by: Dark_Jedi06 on February 22, 2009, 03:13:06 PM
Last Update: 5/8/09

The Grand Duchy of Genevra is a small nation in Western Europe
bordered by France and Savoy on four sides. Despite its size, the Grand
Duchy has a deep connection with European history and can trace
its roots back to the Roman conquests of Gaul. In addition to the fatherland
in Europe, Genevra maintains an overseas colony in the Gulf of Guinea
known as Île de la Guinée. Today Genevra is an active and vital
member of the Simcity Journal Union, maintaining full membership.

This MD is a second and modified version of the original Grand Duchy of Genevra,
no images or events from the first version are applicable here.

I do not guarantee scheduled updates, but will attempt to go no longer
then a week between updates; don't hold me to it though.

Montereau is the capital of Genevra and its existence as such can be traced back to the early Middle Ages. It is one of the oldest and most culturally revered cities in all of Western Europe, with the earliest recorded settlement being the Roman town of Montruvia. The entire city is considered to be a historical site by the Genevran government and it remains unspoiled by modern construction and skyscrapers. This chapter focuses on three stunning images of one of the cities crown jewels, the Catedrala da Gronda Spada, or Cathedral of the Great Sword. It was commissioned in the mid 17th century to commemorate the first great victory of the Sainte Église, the state religion of Genevra and a faith largely unique to the nation. Repelling papal armies in a religious war during the year of 1624, the Grand Duke Lothair III was responsible for building the cathedral to commemorate both his victory and that of the Genevran Church (History of Genevra, Section IV. Early Modern (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/History_of_Genevra%2C_Section_IV._Early_Modern)). The golden eagle adorning the cathedral's entrance was added several centuries later in the aftermath of World War II to act as a beacon of hope and strength for the decimated Genevran people.

Glad to see so many eager beavers. :P After all, that's what I'm after. ;D Just in case you didn't
notice, I've update the first post, so go look! $%Grinno$%

Michael: Hehe, it's so cool to be on a first name basis with people...lol. :D I'm glad you've enjoyed
the sneak peaks, but thank you for the comments as it solidified my decision to go for ahead and give the
MD business another go. :satisfied:

threeswept: I do like to have loyal minions...I mean followers. ;D

Ennedi: And I'm very happy to be back. I never stop playing SC4 so I don't see any reason why
I can't keep a stable MD. I sweat, there won't be a 3.0. :D

Jerebannus: Well I'll be sure not to disappoint Jebbo. ;D

art128: Ah yes, the wonderful LE...the source of my artistic inspiration and the bane of my
existence, it certainly is a double-edged sword. :P

Simpson: Makes me happy to be welcomed back to the MD section with open arms. ;D

antimonycat: It does that extra touch of life, however those bloody sims are obnoxiously timed
props and don't like to show up all too often. :'(

pipishere: The first update always comes the quickest, but don't hold your breath on the
ones after it! :D

Albus of Garaway: The quality of a composition has more to do with the BATs used then anything
I really do, so hats off to Porkie for his fabulous buildings. You'll come to see I have quite and obsession
with the Parisian set... :satisfied:

Fabulous first chapter, DJç! Makes me sooooooooo jealous lol :p!!!
I love the pitoresque feeling about Montereau ;) Hope I can create that in Prades too (as I'm re-doing it :))

1 question, what's that building all the way down in the first mosaic? (you can only see the top of it)..
It looks VERY interesting ;D

Beautiful work on these mosaics Eric, they looks splendid.
the trees along the streets add a great touch to them, that give a more realistic look to your city, and it's really pleasant to see.
I really love all these places, they looks fantastic.

We continue our journey around the nexus of Montereau in which we encounter a few new landmarks as well as revisit the Catedrala da Gronda Spada. We will only be focusing on one of those however, the Place du Dieu Mars, while the other two will still remain shrouded in mystery. The large temple with the green copper roof is the Place du Dieu Mars, or Place of the God Mars, but more commonly is referred to as the Temple of Mars. Constructed in antiquity (ca. 78 BC) by the Romans several decades after their conquest of Gaul, the temple was meant to intimidate and subjugate the local Gaulish population to Roman rule (History of Genevra, Section II. Antiquity (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/History_of_Genevra%2C_Section_II._Antiquity)). It stood without incident up until the fall of the Roman Empire centuries later, when it was largely desecrated by the Pagan barbarian populations pushing their way over the Roman borders. It would remain a relic of the past, butchered by salvaging and war. It would experience a rebirth, however, when the ideals of the Italian Renaissance where transplanted into Genevra along with the founding of the Sainte Église. Under the Grand Duke Lothair III's ambitious cultural agenda, the temple would be rebuilt in an attempt make a historical correlation between the new Genevran state and the power of the ancient Romans.

Carmine: Thank you very much. :) I eagerly await seeing your work return to the MD section. :satisfied:
As for that building, as you've seen in this update you've gotten another taste, but there's still more to it. $%Grinno$%

art128: I think I have a bit of an obsession with trees...but who would want to live in a place without them?
I think the Genevran citizens deserve some nice greenery. :P

rooker1: It's all a matter of different styles...and I would certainly say that I thoroughly enjoy your style in
your (Hall of Fame) MD Mind Scape. ()stsfd()

kbieniu7: There aren't that many trees. :-[

pipishere: Well we certainly wouldn't want that, otherwise you wouldn't be here to praise my work. ;)

io_bg: Hopefully you're still looking forward to the next one. :P

Albus of Garaway: The best thing about having a lot of trees lining your streets is quite simple...it partially
obscures whatever is beneath and creates the illusion that there is more there then there actually is. ::)

Micheal: I'm glad two people caught my little teaser...I'm still not revealing the whole thing though. $%Grinno$%

bat: Thank you very much. :)

Simpson: How does everyone know I use the Lot Editor... :P

Battlecat: I've always been fond of the expression, "the devil is in the details".  ::)

dsrwhat316: When you stalk the pages of Badsim's diary as much as I have, you're bound to pick
up some influences. :D Though while the Parisian set it a bit trite, I've tried to make my use of them unique. :)

guurgkud: Well it was certainly one of the most inspiring comments I have recieved. ;D

thundercrack83: No rush, this MD isn't going anywhere...at least that's the plan. :P I'm very glad
that I can serve as a source of inspiration to another excellent MDer such as yourself. :satisfied:

kimcar: Well version 1 has been condemned to the Inactive MDs if you ever want to give it a go. :D

We continue today getting even closer to revealing the full identity of that gorgeous domed structure that exists as the centerpiece of Montereau. While it will still only be partially shown, the building itself will be revealed as la Basilique de Saint Apôtre, or the Basilica of the Holy Apostle. To many, however, it is simply la Basilique. This wonderfully crafted piece of Genevran architecture lies at the geographic and spiritual heart of Montereau and the entire nation. The complex is religious in nature, acting as the nexus of the Sainte Église and the estate of the Archapostle, the surpeme religious leader of the Church. Constructed over more then a century, the building is considered to be the crown jewel of the Genevran state and was meant to be an imposing force of the Sainte Église. The inside is no less magnificent, and is decorated with countless works of art created by the masterful hands of some of the world's most famous artists. The following panoramic of Montrereau showcases the glorious dome that caps la Basilique.

GMT: My use of the W2W buildings is only half the story, my placement is nothing without the
gorgeous nature of Porkie's BATS. ;D I always want to make sure the true artists get their recognition. :)

iamgoingtoeatyou: Ew I have hot dog goo all over my thread now... :P

sebbyb: Well I don't think my work is good enough to be some sort of gold
standard, I compare my work to that of Badsim's to see if it really measures up.

Shingure: Lot Editing is certainly the wave of the future, I would love to have you
on the bandwagon as well. ;D

CabraBuitre: Ah yes, the city certainly has a problem with gridlock. However, unlike a nasty place like
NYC, walking to your destination can actually be pleasant. :P

pipishere: SC4 is one of the few things I can be patient with, though I'm certainly not above
cutting corners, I'm just good at hiding it when I do... :-[

Battlecat: Well I sold my soul long ago, so he and are on good terms. ::)

bat: Thank you. :)

kimcar: I'm here to please, that is my mission. :satisfied:

Micheal: You might just have to wait a wee bit longer, I want to make sure everything is finished
to a point where it will surely do justice to the magnificent BAT I have chosen to use. :)

cameron1991: I like cluttered...open spaces are just a waste. :P

Youcefk69: Glad you think so. ()stsfd()

Sciurus: ;D ;D

art128: St. Peters? Never heard of it...I'm pretty sure this building is a one of a kind only found in Genevra. ::)

Wonderful panorama and magazine, DJ! I'm in awe.......  ;)

I'm so glad we got the CETA up and running again! Hope Genevra and Vercelli will befenit good in economical ways.
And of course, 1.88 billion euros a year extra from Genevra isn't bad for Savoy, so of course we'll benefit too :p héhé xD
But as my minister said, the greatest benefit are the fabulous relations between our nations :)

Hope to see a new update soon, maybe of another area? suburbs? mountains? =p *who knows*?
xo Carmine

Well after a spot of trouble with la Basilique de Saint Apôtre (I've managed to reach the prop cap and so now I have to figure a way to divide the lot itself into two) we'll be moving towards the western periphery of Montereau, where the rather luxury suburbs collide with the old city. The transition is abrupt, with large buildings of the old city running right up to the cobblestone streets of the suburbs and casting shadows over the small, single-family dwellings. These houses are some of the nicest and most expensive in all of Genevra, however yards and outdoor spaces are nearly non-existent as the houses are packed tightly together. As a very small nation trying to produce a burgeoning population, no viable space in Genevra is left unused. At the same time, however, the nation struggles with maintaining the historic nature of its many cities as well as the existence of a comfortable suburbia. In addition, this chapter is ended with an overview of the entire area we've documented so far, showing the Place du Dieu Mars, la Basilique de Saint Apôtre and the Catedrala da Gronda Spada.

Still continuing along the western periphery of Montereau we explore in greater detail the boundary where the old city meets the cramped suburbs. There are no stunning historical landmarks here, however there are a couple of quaint local sites that only the saviest and most knowledgeable tourist would recognize. The open subway station is the most notable, and is one of the few surviving relics of the original Montereau metro that was constructed decades ago. While all other stations throughout the city have been renovated and retrofitted to fit a more modern styling and function, the Métro de Trottier has been preserved in it original architecture. Such is the job of the Authority on Aesthetics, an arm of the Society for Historical Preservation of the government. Its job is to not only save and maintain the many historic buildings throughout Genevra, but also to influence current construction as to maintain the visual harmony of the nation.

Not many replies to write this time...sure makes the job easier though I always love to hear comments on my work. ;D

Micheal: I wasn't that sure about either, but I'm starting to come around to my decision...it would
seem that the transition looks best in the region view or in a large shot. :satisfied:

pipishere: Lol...hun. You make me laugh Pip. $%Grinno$%

mightygoose: Nope, I decided to forgo the arduous process of making each block individually (which I've certainly
done in the past) and decided simply to plop each building in game, then add the trees, props and whatnot to transit enabled
road lots the make up the city grid. ;D

So you certainly shouldn't find a matching pair!

CabraBuitre: Diagonals are always a good way to spice something up, but they're a pain to use! You have to create
several small lots that fit together like a puzzle to fill the space in front of them. :P

Magnificent updates, DJ! Truly fantastic.......
I wish I found the time and strength to develop such a nice city (mainly the city blocks..)

I know that it's just creating 3 or 4 types, and then change the buildings and props around a bit,
but I just don't find the power in me to start it, lol :p Guess I got a bit sick of SC4.. :(

Anyway, I'm glad to see you're still going ;)
Take care! x

your lotting your roads, genius idea, that way you can use the same lot in front of two different buildings and very few people will notice... how many do you have, 30-40 would be my guess to give you the corners and enough diversity....

Diagonals may be more work... but the payoff is better too!

The same can be said for the curves shown here too.  I know it is more work to lot and then relot to get everything right under the curves... but, again, the payoff is much better than it would be without!  I simply love the curve around the fountain.  It's real-world postcard worthy quality!

This chapter continues to explore the everyday in the capital city as we finish up our look at the western periphery of the "old city" where it meets the suburbian fringes. The second image includes a glimpse of the back of the Catedrala da Gronda Spada as to place the entire area shown in context, the Trottier Metro from Chapter V also has a cameo in this update. And as March draws to a close, the April 2009 edition of Le Monarque has been released for your reading pleasure and it includes some vital stories on the political and diplomatic status of Genevra abroad.

Carmine: Actually, I've found an easier way then what you've described...for the grid of the inner city all the
Parisian buildings are plopped independently as landmarks and all the lot editing goes on when I create stretches of road
to match the grid (which can easily be reused while avoiding repetition ;)).

mightygoose: My plugins folder isn't organized enough to give you exact numbers, but I have about
twenty different lots for the roads I would say. :)

BarbarossaS: I'm certainly glad to have a newcomer. ;D

kimcar: Thank you. :) :)

Dustin: Try telingl that to the game...sometimes while running something like Photoshop or iTunes in the
background SC4 turns into this (http://i476.photobucket.com/albums/rr124/Dark_Jedi06/GraphicsBug.jpg). My excessive use of props certainly
"staggers" the game, and I'm only about 1/5 of the way through one large tile.  $%Grinno$%

CabraBuitre: Diagonals are more work...and FARR pieces are even more! If you look closely in the panoramic
you'll see some use of the FARR in the upper right hand corner. :satisfied: Now that's a pain in the butt. :P

pip: Such a card. ;D

Arthur: I guess the jury is still out on this one. :P

sebes: Oh good another newcomer! :D

kwakelaar: I'm quite glad that you mentioned the magazine, that part probably takes the most time. ::)

I9113N: Well we all have our talents... :satisfied: I certainly enjoy my time over at the Lower Countries. :)

First again! ;p

Another breathtaking update, DJ! It is truly unbelievably good.. I'm sure the SC4 creators would be proud if they saw this...
And well, you're unvealed building style tip might be stolen soon! I got sick of SC4 because custom lotting took SO much work, but your way of doing it inspired me as it's much easier. :)

Who knows maybe soon it'll be time for Savoie v2.0?! :p

Take care!! x

I don't think DJ's way of lotting is that much easier than say that of BadSim's Antigone, I must say I'm equally impressed with both  ;D
The surplus here is the fantastic Le Monarque, I like that bit A LOT!!!
Keep 'm coming, those updates, I'll be back for more  :P

Yes, diagonals may be extra work... but there definitely is a big payoff!  One thing that I really like is how integrated they are.  Most times that I see people use them, they're either diagonal or orthogonal.  You have a great combination of both!

Keep up the great work!

Today I am introducing the Genevran WikiProject, which I will show at the beginning of each chapter detailing my current progress with the Genevran wiki page (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/Grand_Duchy_of_Genevra) on the SCJU (http://www.12colonies.net) wiki until said page is complete and containing all relevant information on Genevra.

New Pages
[[ Main Page (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/Grand_Duchy_of_Genevra) :: Montereau (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/Montereau) :: History of Genevra; Antiquity (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/History_of_Genevra,_Section_II._Antiquity), Middle Ages (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/History_of_Genevra,_Section_III._Middle_Ages), Early Modern (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/History_of_Genevra,_Section_IV._Early_Modern), Modern (http://12colonies.net/wiki/index.php/History_of_Genevra,_Section_V._Modern) ]]

Considering I have not shown a map or given any detailed information on the geography of Genevra, you will be surprised to find that in this chapter you will be introduced to the Rhone River. This is the very same river that flows to the Mediterranean through the French cities of Lyon and Avignon, yet it is at its most pictureesque as it runs through the carefully constructed, tree-lined canals of Montereau. No longer a work horse of industry and travel, Genevra has transformed the Rhone into a work of art. In addition, we also see la Basilique de Saint Apôtre from a variety of angles (as Genevran engineers finally figured out how to overcome the prop limit on a lot ;)) as well as a huge teaser that should be fairly obvious in the second image. Enjoy!

Carmine: Well I'm not sure if it's any easier, though it may speed up the process a bit. I would
certainly like to see a Savoy 2.0 so just give me a ring if you need help with anything. ;)

BarbarossaS:Ah yes, I was hoping that the fancy magazine would bring that added, unique touch,
and it seems I have succeeded! ;D

sebes: Haha I'm glad you figured it out, perhaps I need to make clearer instructions. "$Deal"$

kimcar: Thank you very much! :) :)

CabraBuitre: Just enough diagonals so I don't pull my hair out, add in a few FARR pieces and
suddenly the grid becomes much less pronounced as I distract your attention. :P

I didn't mean to say easier, actually meant faster... lol, sorry :)
And I'd certainly like to start with Savoy 2.0 (Confédération savoisienne) too, but some things are stopping me :s
I'm trying to create a custom sidewalk, but for some reason another texture overlaps the texture I want to use in-game and the SC4 Tool doesn't work :s lol
Lots of problems stopping me from playing! :p

I did send you a PM at the forums with a request, hope you consider helping me with it :) thx! xx

As for the update, again another fabulous serie of pictures! The canal is unbelievably stunning!!!
Hope Prades will be just as gorgeous... It's also on the Rhône river, if you didn't know ;)
Keep amaze me with your fantastic work/lots and I'll always be the first to reply. héhé xD

Take care!

very nice! Just looked at your wiki  I was wondering why the LU wasn't on the relations list.  :D                    ... ::)

Recent magazine was a rather nice read as well, some interesting stories in their. Great to have an insight into aspects of Genevra :)

It was great joy reading your wiki pages at SCJU... If I will ever fire up my game again I will really consider joining there for background info on Nieuw Nederland/Dutch America and establishing some diplomatic relations.

However, looking at your great pictures, and knowing the quality of other member states, my heart sinks into my boots &mmm

This chapter will introduce several more of Montereau's historic sites while leaving others still a mystery, we will address each in turn. First we see the Stade Rouge, the small copper roofed building flush against the Rhone. Now a famous theater venue, in decades past "the Stade" has been a house of illrepute, deserted building and a bomb shelter. A block down from the opera house is la Gare de Grandeur, the largest rail terminus in the entire nation and the hub of all rail travel throughout Genevra, in addition to servicing large portions of the French borderlands. Once again, we also see the grand spire of an unknown tower casting shadows across the city, this time cutting through the rain and fog of a stormy day...

Carmine: Well I would suggest asking for help somewhere on the forums for your sidewalk problem. And
as for your little request, I haven't forgot about, just been a bit preoccupied and waiting for the right inspiration. :)

I9113N: Well before going through the trouble of editing my templates I want to make sure your serious about
being active in the SCJU (which is quite possible as an Observer :)), once I see your committment then we shall see. :satisfied:

Youcefk69: Like Lyon you say? That's good, because Lyon is only a short ways up the Rhone so I was trying
to emulate it...subconsciously at least. :P

io_bg: Thank you! ;D ;D

Micheal: And I swear those insights are completely without bias! ...lol. $%Grinno$% Thanks buddy! ;D

sebes: Oh nonsense, the SCJU is always looking for people who want to be active and dynamic parts of
the Union (though we certainly frown upon those just looking for a badge of honor ;)) and we are always willing to off help,
comments, ideas and suggestions to anyone with a strong drive. :) Consider Observership in the SCJU if you'd like to
get your feet wet and see what we're all about.

kimcar: Photoshop is essential for doing something about these terribly drab colors Maxis gave us. :P

BarbarossaS: Spot on! :D

BTW where did you get those trees on the diagonal side of the canal on the first pic?

Awesome update DJ, the walkway along the canal looks excellent and quite calm, a good place to be !
Stunning lotting job as ever, the Gare Du Nord is a very sweet lot.
I just think that the Odeon Theater need a bit more of space between the road and the building (looks how it's in the reality), generally, theater have a big plaza.

Looking forward to more,

Arthur.

Among the Genevrans and the French there is a saying; "la tour ou la tour?". Depending on which nation you find yourself in, the answer to which tower came first, "the tower or the tower?" will be startingly different. In France, the response is often haughty and curt; of course the Eiffel Tower came first. In Genevra, however, many will seek to persuade you with the eloquent language of a revisionist history that claims the Tour de Magne was constructed first. In reality the Genevra tower was built a couple of decades after the famous Eiffel Tower, though it was constructed in a very similar manner. Initially a mockery of the Eiffel Tower (which after the 1889 World's Fair was kept standing, despite being generally viewed as an ugly monument), the Genevran people came to enjoy their new tower much as the French had. Today, the Magne Tower is considered a Genevran oddity, though it is greatly overshadowed by the original pièce de résistance in France.

I'm feeling incredibly lazy at the moment and don't feel like replying to each comment in turn (or perhaps it's because my Calculus book is staring me in the face reminding me I have an exam to study for tomorrow :'(). Either way, I would like to thank everyone for their support and I hope everyone is enjoying what I've had to show so far. :) Update will also become slightly less frequent as I'm eating up my Photobucket bandwith rather fast and even had to start up a second account to compensate for it. :P

Extremely impressive lotting skills you have. I especially like the re-lotting of St. Peter's Basilica. A small touch I noticed that I liked was the median strip added to the road bridge in the second mosaic. It's little details such as that makes your MD stand out.

I hope to see you in the Best Sellers section soon!

This chapter is an interesting montage of images, showcasing the Tour de Magne as well a handful of new landmarks. The first two are nowhere near the city of Montereau, but instead are located in the heart of the rolling hills and forests that encompass the capital city. The castle is the Château de Chaumont which was named in honor of a previously venerable member of the SCJU, the Empire of Chaumont. The castle dates back several centuries and was built as a retreat for the Genevran monarch. The stone monolith standing in front of the castle was located at the sight first and it is unknown who constructed the beautiful statue; it was named the Fidèle Garde, or Faithful Guard, as it was seen as a symbol of protection over the capital city. Back in the city itself, the structure adorned with a golden dome contains the two houses of Parliament; the House of Peers and the Lower House and is the nexus of government affairs.

I only just now found my way to this magnificent MD and I am truly sorry I haven´t seen it before, it is absolutely wonderful!
The massive use of props and custom lots make the city come to life in a beautiful way and the european style always fascinate me.
Like the earlier posters I have to agree that You have managed to create a wonderful mix of old and modern stuff, just like You would find in a real life city of today.
The trains running in front of the castle in the last update could be from any scenic postcard from the river and wine valleys of France and Germany.
I would however like to know where You found the metrostation a few updates back, it looks very nice in the oldtown environment...
I´ll definately hang around for the next updates!

What can one say but impressive, very impressive

I've had a look at every page, the attention to detail is superb, and the last two updates include some of the best screenshots I've seen. The work you have done around the tower, well nice is an understatement.

If you want to learn or refine the art of creating a city, this is one MD that has to be added to the "Must Visit" list.

The lot editing again shines through in the previous updates and the image editing sets it off perfectly.

Easily the lotting skills are comparable to Badsim, detailed and perfect in many ways. A true delight to view and leaves you wanting more.

Fabulous work Eric :)

So far there has been little doubt that Montereau is indeed a green city. The banks of the Rhone are draped with trees and boulevards and side streets alike are bathed in the shadows of foliage. However, if you've been watching closely it has also become apparent that open space is at a premium, and large open areas are usually cluttered with the hustle and bustle of commerce. Across the Rhone, though, with the long shadow of the Tour de Magne stretching over it is what is affectionately known as Point Vert, or the green dot. A large area of lush grass and foliage nestled among the crowded streets of Montereau, it is a welcomed retreat from city life. It is also the sight of a massive observation wheel that gives the most fantastic panoramic view of Montereau and neighboring Lafayette.

This time it's not a Calculus exam keeping me from writing individual replies, but an atrocious Biology Practical coming my way tomorrow evening. :'( Regardless, I would like to thank everyone whose read and commented on Genevra and gotten me to the Best Sellers. It's all very exciting and flattering, and it makes me very happy that my work has been enjoyed so much, as I consider it my only means to give back to the community. So here's to 400 more comments and eventually becoming a Classic! ;D ;D

Whoa, what an update!

I love the shops along the canal in the first mosaic, along with the park surrounding the ferris wheel. We always see Parisian buildings in your MD, but are you (or do you) going to use other styles (American, other European, etc.)? I'm very curious to see you use those styles with your great LE skills!

Today's chapter contains several important developments, including the first "Interlude", breaks in the showing of in-game pictures to progress the storyline of Genevra more fully. We will start with this Interlude, and the SC4 pictures will follow.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv175%2Fmasteryoda40%2FGenevra%2520Redux%2FBook%25201%2520Chapter%252012%2FInterludeBanner.jpg&hash=5644269f307ad7e9124e8e3122de3c5d585eb893)

Heavy fog blanketed the Dubois Strait, minute filtrations of moonlight tapering through the miasma. It is at this point in the Gulf of Guinea that the shores of île de la Guinée and Cameroon and closest, and it is at this point the Genevran naval patrols are most heavily concentrated. On that foggy night, April the 24th, 2009, captain of the GNS Balthazar Cesar Garnier commanded a portion of the West African Naval Fleet consisting of the Balthazar, an aircraft carrier, and two escorting guided missile cruisers, the GNS Monarchie and le Rhone. It was an ordinary night, a routine that captain Garnier had undergone more then a dozen times since arrive to the Gulf of Guinea nearly a month ago. However, the appearance of several blips on the bridge radar screen would change all that.

His senses heightened and his curiosity aroused, Garnier radioed his small contingent and ordered all personnel to be on high alert and altered his course to intercept the three ships steaming directly towards île de la Guinée in Genevran waters. When at least visual contact was reached, it was ascertained that these war vessels flew the flag of Cameroon. From there, the situation quickly escalated...

4:31 AM, Captain Garnier establishes radio contact with identified Cameroon warships, demands several times that the ships immediately leave Genevran waters on the course they entered. No response is received, and the vessels continue at full speed towards île de la Guinée.

4:35 AM, Distance between ships close, still no response has been elicited or change in action. Captain Garnier informs the Cameroonian command that several warning shots will be fired, if the demands are not met after those initial salvos the Genevrans will open fire in earnest.

4:37 AM, Several shots land harmlessly in the waters around the Cameroon vessels yet no effort is made at slowing or changing course, Captain Garnier decides to allow several more minutes for compliance. The result is disastrous, the Cameroon warships unexpectedly open fire. Without hesitation Garnier orders returning fire. The Genevrans instantly gain the upper hand.

4:45 AM, The Genevran ships make short work of the enemy, sinking two vessels and allowing one to escape badly damaged. In total, 44 Genevran sailors are killed and many Cameroonians are fished out of the water and taken prisoner.

The GNS Balthazar and its escorts of the West African Naval Fleet on patrol in the Dubois Strait.

The Grand Duke, who at the time of the hostilities was just about to enter into meetings with government officials in Seto, is shocked by the events and commends the sailors on handling the situation with military professionalism. A call is immediately made to Prime Minister Leutrim Wetter back in Genevra, who in a televised event before Parliament elucidates the nation on the travesty that has occurred. He informs the people that the Grand Duke has not yet declared a State of War, however all troops have been placed at maximum readiness.

Several hours later that same day, after engaging with talks with the supreme leaders of the armed forces by secure televised conference, the Grand Duke addressed his people from Seto in an internationally televised speech. He denounced the actions of the Cameroon forces, praised the professionalism by which his own troops conducted themselves, and offered condolences to his people who lost loved ones in the brutal attack. He assured the Genevran people that they were safe and stated that war had not been declared, however that a blockade of Cameroon's major port of Douala and an all around containment of the hostile nation would occur such to impose the will of Genevra and to support the territorial integrity of its borders.

Satellite image with overlays showing the division between Genevran and Cameroonian territorial waters (10th Vertical) as well as the location of the hostilities and the impending blockade.

[leftCameroon President Paul Biya responded by decrying the destruction wrought by the Genevran navy, yet he declined to provide an explanation as to why three heavily armed vessels of the Cameroon navy were so close to the shores of île de la Guinée. At the time of his comments, he was not informed of the impending blockade and his response on that matter is yet to be determined, however he was adamant in stating that he did not want to see war erupt...[/left]

Now onto some less dire developments, continuing with the development of the capital city. An important new landmark shows a bit of itself in this chapter, however we shall leave it anonymous for the moment. In addition, we see some of the first "modern" signs in Montereau, namely the major A1 highway artery cutting through the city and running parallel to the Rhone River. It is a little ways beyond this highway that the major commercial city of Lafayette lies, but that's for another day.

Dustin: Well I'm glad always impress, that's my goal. ;D

Blue Lightning: Ah yes, the wonders of Photoshop...instantly makes SC4 look 1000 times better. :P

BarbarossaS: Well actually considering that finals are fast approaching, RL is absolutely not
fun at the present moment. :D

sithlrd98: No problem my friend, just glad to have you here! ;D

kimcar: You're quite welcome! :P

dsrwhat316: Oh yes, I very much plan to use other styles. However, Porkies Parisian set is by far my favorite
and I certainly think it's beauty if befitting the capital city.

After Montereau I plan on doing something with modern European skyscrapers... ;)

Still not much progress with the Wiki, however this chapter I would like to start off with a bit of a clarification. I think some are confused on the location of Genevra as well as the current conflict erupting with Cameroon, so here's a simple map:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi476.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr124%2FDark_Jedi06%2FGenevra%2520Redux%2FBook%25201%2520Chapter%252013%2FClarify.jpg&hash=148a307cf57f56899d6166f0aa01761f34e3e97f)

1: This is the location of the Genevran homeland in western Europe and the site of the capital of Montereau; the conflict with Cameroon does not and will likely not spread to affect the European motherland.

2: This is where the Genevran colony of  île de la Guinée is located in the Gulf of Guinea, just off the coast of Cameroon. This is where the current hostilities are occurring as well as the blockade of Douala.

Now onto the images themselves...in this update we return to the previous area shown in Chapter 12. Most importantly we see a frontal view of the Palais D'été, or the Summer Palace. Historically it served as the summer home of the Grand Duke in Montereau, surrounded by lush gardens and fountains. Today it is far more modest and serves the purpose of being the permanent residence of the Grand Duke. The gardens and ostentatious flair of the palace were largely removed in the mid-20th century as a means to further reduce to the Genevran absolute monarchy.

The outbreak of hostilities in the Gulf of Guinea also found a spot on Fox News.com as nations around the world reacted to the blockade.

First of all, I would like to say that I am greatly honored to once again accept the award of OSITM. ;D And I would like to thank everyone for their support and comments that have made this possible. I eagerly look forward to this special month for Genevra. :)

TopCliff: Haha well then it's a good thing that the war is far from the capital city. :P

Navox: I'm glad you enjoy the "war" so far, as I know some members are rather adverse
to war stories ending up in MD's. ;)

BarbarossaS: Well I hope then that my little clarification in the opening has allayed those fears...any conflict
will be far from the Genevran motherland. :) As for Lafayette...well you'll just have to wait and see! Though Montereau is
approaching completion, slowly but surely. ::)

mightygoose: I'm not quite sure yet! We'll just have to wait and see. ;)

Swesim: No explanation so far...seems a bit fishy to me. %confuso

Sciurus: Very much Parisian, I absolutely love the Hausmannian style. ;D

Micheal: Thank you Micheal, we are always glad to have the support of our
powerful friend in Atlantis. :)

art128: Thank you Arthur! The award is quite an honor. :satisfied:

Craig: I'm glad you agree with the decision of the SC4D staff. ;D

Jmouse: A newcomer! Your presence is very much welcomed Joan and I
thank you for you kind words. :)

kimcar: Thank you friend! :) :)

Orange_o_: Thank you, I'm very happy to be among the OSITM. :satisfied:

bat: ;D ;D

Thanks for the explanation, it's nice to hear that this beautiful city isn't likely to be destroyed!  ;D
The map explained a lot, I really thought Genevra was down there with île de la Guinée too.

As for the update: what more can I say that I haven't said already. I'm running out of superlatives to describe your work!  &apls
The summer palace looks extremely beautiful, and I like that church next to the highway a lot. Especially with those statues in front of it.

Nice to see FoxNews has picked up the conflict between Genevra and Cameroon, maybe we'll see a special issue of Le Monarque next time  ;)

Excellent, I really love this city, and you know, I think I guessed you loved the Haussmaian style ;D But it's beauitful reagardless . One question: on the first and the second image, is the highway the "Boulevard périphérique"?

I love the buildings you have chosen to use. They are wonderful classics which lend themselves to many different settings, so they remain fresh and lovely wherever and however they are placed. Your mosaics are especially  well done.

The maps were an excellent idea - I'm very fond of maps. I see so many MDs it's hard to keep up with and follow the story of every one. You are really doing a good job here. A lot of careful thought and consideration have gone into this project, and I can assure that it has been noticed and appreciated.

Later...
Joan

Hmmm, fishy eh?  Gone fishing I suppose...  ;D
Wonderful update as usual though!
How do You make Your newsupdates in Photoshop? I am looking for someone expreienced like You that can give a simple tutorial on how to do these things in PS...
Best regards in the meantime!

Eric,
I like how you put the highway behind an old - and maybe historic - church and dense residential W2W parisian development (wow, a lot of  adjectives to describe that :D !), it's greatly done !!
Looking forward to more.

Take care,
-Arthur.

Still not much progress with the Wiki, as I've been relying on a really crummy wireless connection here at school after inadvertently exceeding my bandwith limits by quite a bit. I've also been busy with finals week but that will be finishing up soon and I wanted to post an update to hold everyone over until I finally break for summer. Today's chapter is actually taking a step back from our previous expansion and returning to some areas of the capital city that remained unfinished; around Chapters V and VI, so some of this should be recognizable. The first image also takes another look at the rail line that snakes around Montereau, for those well versed in Genevran you geography you will know that Montereau lies in the Rhone River valley surrounded by densely forested, sloping hills (note the use of dedgren's new ploppable water as well as FARR puzzle pieces).

BarbarossaS: Haha I'm not sure about another edition of Le Monarque anytime soon,
putting together the whole magazine takes quite a bit of work some I'm going to spend some time
exploring various other forms of news media. :)

Sciurus: Lol I had to look that one up on Wikipedia, though I certainly
think you could compare it to that highway. $%Grinno$%

TopCliff: Well if I answered that question I'd have to give quite a bit away now
wouldn't I? :P Rest assured though that I plan to do something combining military and in-game images. :)

pete3d: Thank you very much!

Luciano: Realism is my ultimate goal. ;)

Jmouse: It makes me very glad to hear that, my intention with putting the work into my MD is foremost
that people can come by and enjoy it. ;D

Swesim: It depends on which news updates you're talking about...the FoxNews one was particularly easy
because it's just a matter of editing a screenshot. :P I've long considered writing up a tutorial on the various applications
of Photoshop to the art of MDing, I've just never gotten around to it...

Arthur: I figured it was time to throw a bit of modern flare into this completely historic city. ::)

Luke09: Thank you. :) :)

This update is absolutely stunning, the combination of FARR and curves in your city is impressive. It must've taken a lot of time to include these in your city.
I was wondering how some buildings are connected to your network, because they are not adjacent to a road or street. They only have a plaza tile in front of them.

Beautiful update Eric.
The first picture with the rail bridge is wonderful my friend, nice use of floras. I'm not going with Guillaume, I like the transition between forest and city. Also, excellent LOTting job once again !
Looking forward to more.
Take care.

The Grand Duchy of Genevra
Summer Recess
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi476.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr124%2FDark_Jedi06%2FSeal.jpg&hash=bbb1aca979fba1e9bdd7781b762aca9aad678500)
As it would turn out, summer vacation has found me busier then my time at school. An almost 40 hour work week is way harder then a few classes. :-[ In addition, my girlfriend and I are finally back together after spending two semesters at school 100 miles apart. Therefore, it is with that in mind, that I announce that the Grand Duchy of Genevra will be enacting a new schedule for the summer months. Essentially, updates will come as I find time and will likely not be as full as some of my previous updates have been. It's not something I want to do, but it's the only compromise that can be reached to keep Genevra alive over the summer. I fully expect to be back in full swing once fall arrives and I head back to my boring life at college. :P

I have given this decision much thought and hope that everyone who has followed the Grand Duchy and has been so supportive will understand. We are not going away, simply slowing down for awhile. Not the best way to end my month as OSITM but there's still time. ;)

So anyway, first things first. Though it was published quite some time ago, I've only now gotten the chance to post the May '09 edition of Vox Populi, a collaborative effort by the members of the SCJU (http://www.12colonies.net) to put forth a magazine detailing events from across the nations of the Union. The design follows that of Le Monarque with the actual magazine being designed and created by me, with various members submitting stories regarding their nation.

darraghf: Are you referring to the SMP Sandstone Mod (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=17323)? ;)

Micheal: I have an obsession with trains in SC4. :P

Carmine: Haha excellent! Love is a good thing. :)

BarbarossaS: Since you like Le Monarque so much, hopefully you'll enjoy the SCJU magazine just
as well. ;) Same principle applies, it just covers a more broad range of topics. :)

kwakelaar: It's looking a little too ambitious at the moment...but slow and steady wins the race. :)

Navox: Well I'm not sure if I've ever stated this before, but I build my cities by plopping. ::)
So road connections aren't important, its all about aesthetics. ;)

bat: Thank you very much :)

Sciurus: Well as others commented as well I will explain the city-forest transition. I've never shown
a map but Montereau lies in a deep river valley surrounded by steep hills. As such, where the the city meets
the base of the hills there is nothing to do but give way to the forest. Genevrans are very concerned about the
natural splendor of their nation. ;D

sithlrd98: I know exactly how you feel, simply look at my many other CJ/MDs that
have ended within a month or two. :P

Luciano: See above reasoning. ;)

calibanX: Well I'm a huge history buff, so my favorite part about journaling is the
ability to create every aspect of my nation as I want it. :)

Battlecat: Thank you. :) :)

Swesim: Project that may never be finished, but I will certainly enjoy the time that
I spend attempting it anyway...lately that time has been hard to come by though! :P

Arthur: Glad to hear that, thank you very much. ;D

Of course I love the voxpopuli magazine! It's nice to read what's going on within the borders of the SCJU  :P
To bad we're going to have to settle for less or smaller updates, but that's totally understandable, you just enjoy your summer and we'll be patiently awaiting whatever you have in store for us!  ;)
