Hi everyone, I have decided to try to get into mods and plops myself. I have looked around and it seems I need Lot Editor, BAT and gmax. I already have a full Autodesk Studio Max. Is it possible to use that or are the other programs linked to each other? And where will I look for a few tutorials?
You can indeed use that...very soon Diggis will be releasing BAT4Max 3, which has been developed by Chris Adams. You may want to wait for that release as it makes the entire process so much easier.
Thanks callagrafx, And ignore the question about tutorials; I should have looked harder. Found them. Blame it on the time. (2.00 am here in Australia).
No problem...there are a few of us using it, myself and Diggis included so if you do have a question, please feel free to ask.
Any kind of ETA or is it DWID?
(insert whisteling smilie here...) I will have another look at this tonight and try and release it. There were a couple of small patches Chris did after the last working version and I need to make sure these are included.
Sorry to be a nuisance. I tried to install BAT but it says it can't without gmax being installed. I went to try to download gmax and it seems it no longer exists. Is there a way I can get it to recognise Autodesk Max instead?
Would AutoDesk Maya work instead of Max?
JMS
Wow Jmouse, you're up to date. I didn't know there was a Maya. Just had a look. I guess that means Max is being phased out. Please don't go for Maya instead of Max, Diggis; I need to know how to use BAT etc in Max.
Joan, I doubt it....A lot of the script is specific to Max.
Gayleau: Download it from the LEX and read the detailed installation and usage instructions.....in other words:

:D :D :D :D
Sorry callagrafx, saw that file a million times but glossed over it thinking it was a .bat file for whatever. I tend to speed read and it gets me into trouble sometimes. Thanks for that; about to give it a go.
Thank you, Lee. Guess it's just as well, though - one does need to master the basics first, eh! &mmm
Later...
Joan

You do need GMAX as well to export the BAT Lods. This can be obtaioned from TurboSquid now. Not sure of the exact link, but google should help.

Just a note here, I didn't do this work. It was all Chris Adams, with Lee and I beta testing it. Chris is MIA with RL at the moment so I have uploaded it for him.
Also I doubt AutoDesk are going to Phase 3DS Max out any time soon, it's the industry standard. I believe Maya was part of a takeover they made and has been added to the Autodesk Family.

sweet.....hopefully i can get this one to work... ;D

Correct, Autodesk bought out Alias Systems in 2005, which was the company that produced Maya.
One would hope that with the acquisition, they have also acquired the ability to port 3DSMax to Apple OSX. If they did that I could finally say bye bye to Windows ;D

That would be a negative. They bought Maya just for the reason of being cross compatable. The key sales target of 3ds Max is game developers using DirectX.
Well, they would open up a huge market for animation, as the edit software of choice for the likes of Pixar etc is Final Cut Pro. Not to mention architectural visualisations. In theory, as Apple are now Intel-based, it's only DirectX that prevents it running on Crossover, so if there was a way to choose OpenGL, then problem solved

Except that would require them to accept that the bugs in the programme are theirs, and not blame it on hardware.

I thought Pixar used in house things like Marionette. The only non-Pixar developed program I know of them using is Renderman, which they've heavily edited for their uses. Either way, I would doubt them bringing 3DS over, but could fully see them providing more support to their branches that do work on Mac due the increased popularity.
Final Cut Pro is video editing software
From what I gather Maya is becoming the new standard though, atleast all 3D design/animation courses in Sweden starting 09 seem to rely on Maya.
Wish people would open up for Blender though. Blender is defiantly the best 3D application I've ever used, and I've only been using it for three weeks.

Maya: $2,590.00
3DS Max: $3,990.00
Which would you choose?
Already tried the download from turbosquid. It is labelled gmax but only installs microsoft VPC instead; waited and waited to see if it was going to continue on with installing gmax but no go. It's okay I think, I used to have it a few years ago, I will search my old XP machine for an old copy of the installer. Maybe! Fingers crossed.
I take all of that back. I suddenly had a brainwave. Went back to turbosquid and registered as a member, downloaded the file (which looks exactly the same as the one on the non-registered page). This time it did install gmax. So for future reference for anyone who wants gmax, go to turbosquid (ignore the gmax bit until after you register as a member) then download it from within your account.
Sorry, I will shut up after this. Just wanted to let you know that I made a small donation to thank you for all your help. I can't afford much at a time so I will just make small ones each week or so. Thanks for putting up with me.

Yeah, I know. Was just saying I thought they pretty much only used in house software, and used those as examples. I hadn't heard anything about them using FCP before.

Good point, though if it all was about cost I would expect to see more of Blender, which is free. Shame large companies don't use open-source software.
Gayleau; You got the activation code to I presume? Also from turbosquid's page, you need it the first time you start gmax/bat.

I would guess it's because programmes like 3DS Max are much more powerful. From what I understand Maya is more an animation package, particularly for organic animation (people etc) whereas Max is used for Still and flythroughs more. Lee may correct me here (he has a habit of that :D) but that is my understanding.

Maya has very powerful animation tools and is used a lot for CGI work and post production effects (Spiderman, Star Wars, LOTR)....At the same time, Max is used extensively in television, shows like Battlestar Galactica, Stargate Atlantis, the series on Rome, etc etc etc. So not really just for stills and flythroughs though. It's the same old thing, 3D Studio has been around since the early mid 90's (I used to use v3 then v4 in DOS), so became the standard because it was the only one available to the "masses"...TDI Explore required a Sun Unix workstation and was stupidly expensive. Lightwave followed shortly afterwards but was, in the main, an inferior product.

A port would be wonderful. I've read that they are merging Max and Maya into one program (or something to that extent). They would have to port it to OSX, if they didn't want to lose their mac customers (I would have thought anyway).

Yes, thanks, got that too; there is actually a link in the installation.
