Brief Description:
The Lower Countries is a fictional union of fourteen countries found on the Latusian Peninsula. Officially, they are all part of the Latusian Union, (LU) a union similar to Earth's EU. The union is known for being advanced in subjects such as education, health care, alternate energies, and the financial sector.

The LU is divided into four regions: the Northwest, the Eastboard, the Midlands, and the Southwest. These regions also determine where airlines can and cannot fly, although all airlines go to major cities. Each region has a specific airline, plus some privately owned companies. NW: United Ruska, EA: Eastboard Air, MD: Falkair, SW: Trans-Latu Air. In addition to the regional are the privately owned airlines Lutuja Air, Air Neva, Poklinj Airways, New Ruska Air, Svattonj Aeroflat, Kisza Aeroflat, and Lumanso Flutje.

Land/Water Feature Map:

This map shows many land and water features of the LP. Useful when you want to know what river you're looking at, or what the name of that big lake over there is. ()stsfd()

On this map, we can see the three major mountain ranges, the Bellatone and Monsolle mountains, and the Saguv Foothills. The Bellatone form the border of Ementrosia and Pol-Monterre, and the Monsolle form the border between Pol-Monterre and Neva, and also engulf most of Kanne. South of the Monsolle mountains is the Ammjet Peninsula, famous for the booming city of Sedjorski. Unfortunately there is a spelling error in the Bay of Sedjorsk. Heading north again and a bit to the west, we see the great Salles Reservoir, with the large river leading out of it, the Addenostoph. Slightly west of the Addenostoph is the Asken river, which spans the height of the LP. West of the Asken lies the River Malay, which originates from a spring in the Bellatone mountains.
West of the Malay lies the Polish plains, known for the massiv Katujev Forest. Along the coast of the Polish plains is Wersten Bay, Cape Velle, and part of Ammes Bay. Going north through the Bellatone we come to the Ott Akmaarn, which translates into "Great Kettles." These interesting hills and valleys were formed by currents in the Sea of Linin, which were powerful enough to shape the ever-moist landscape before the sea drained away. What is left is a great place to go camping and take a train ride. East of the Ott Akmaarn lie the Sjedo Plains, forming the heart of the Midlands.
Further east and across the Asken River sits Lake Osjedo, named for the great Ammelian explorer who helped settle New Ammel. Osjedo forms part of the border of three countries, and is not only a famous tourist spot, but now a great way to flee the Falkands if you're a Jewish refugee. Further north of Lake Osjedo are the Eastern Plains. West of the Eastern Plains are the Saguv Foothills. Just north of the Saguv foothills is the Montosia Floodplain, also known as Lisvak Ka Anstualo or "The Fertile Farmlands," as the Montosian soil is very rich. Northeast of the flat Montosia Floodplain are the Vestuack Foothills, which form the northern edge of the LP. Northwest of them are the Chergy Lowlands, home to the cross between the Netherlands and Manhatten.

The Lower Countries is a union-ish type thing, made up of 14 12 different countries, Dostrovek, Malia, Auchtenaliastov, Korgia, Hunsinia, Ementrosia, The Falkands (no L), Neva, New Ammel, Kanne, Pol-Monterre, Datsun, Jonkoland (J's are pronounced as y's) and Svierestal.

This small island nation is comprised of four large and one small islands. I won't show you the main island that has the capital city today, though. The country is famous for its "i could really care less" attitude, crappy bridge building, and lovely biscuits.
A bit of history: Svierestal used to be called the Svierestal Islands, and occupied all of the islands shown above. After a recession coupled with extreme corruption brought the country close to a near civil war, the Latusian Union (the fourteen countries are located on the Latusian Peninsula, that is the name of their union, kind of like the European Union) split the islands into three countries.

About the flag:
The blue symbolizes the water that is the lifeblood of the islands, because the Svierestalians are known for building crappy birdges. The white resembles absolutely nothing, they didn't want to put a different color. The shapes in the blue symbolize the four islands and the castle as seen earlier. The griffin, to them, symbolizes strength and resilience, usually not the case though. The leaf symbolizes their precious trees. And the words "De Kunigg ze Svieste" roughly translate into "The Kingdom of Svierestal" although their definition of kingdom is different then ours. They consider any body of government that controls land a kingdom, so they don't actually have a king or queen, they have a prime minister, who is controversially involved in helping the Datish peoples at the moment...

Jonkoland: Part 1, Ferrenjeva Island

Jonkoland is known for many things. Within its borders lies the busiest ferry terminal in the world (not in this post), a small spring that supplies 64% of the nation's water, and the tallest building on Ferrenjeva Island! It is also the foggiest nation in the world. :P The people that call it home, the Jonkish, speak a variation of Datish, which they know as Bulluvei. The name is derived from the ancient language of Bullu, which was later renamed Datish.

About the flag:
The blue background represents the waters surrounding Jonkoland. The red stripe symbolizes the bloodshed during the breakup of the Svierestal Islands. The greenish band represents the forests that cover Ferrenjeva Island. Each of the stars represents one of Jonkoland's four islands. The scale represents equality, the lion resilience, bravery, and courage. The words "Fër Pesonnå" translate into "For Freedom."

Government:
After the drawing of borders that followed the breakup of the Svierestal Islands, Jonkoland changed from a Dictatorship to a Constitutional Monarchy, similar to the monarchy it was before it was absorbed by Svierestal. The current prime minister resides in a townhouse in Possit that has a view of the sea. The king and queen, due to lack of space, live in a mansion south of Possit.

Now onto your MD, which I'm rather disappointed to see has so few comments considering it has started off quite nicely. ()what() It certainly has a wonderfully quaint European feel to it and I love the bright colors of the trees and farms. :satisfied:

I only have a few suggestions and those are that you should generally avoid presentation images containing undeveloped zones, signs and to a lesser extent lots under construction. Other then that, keep on trucking. :thumbsup:

*Pol-Monterre is a noun, to describe anything about Pol-Monterre, or in, or related to, one would say it is Monterrian. If it is in Poland (a province of Pol-Monterre) one would say Polterrian. The "terr" is included to show the superiority of Monterre (everything but Poland) over Poland. (Monterre conquered Poland in the 30's)

I'd show you Datsun but I'm figuring out how to get the cars to drive on the left... (Datsun is one of three countries that does. The other two are Kanne and the Falkands) So in the meantime you can busy yourself with the Daily Laty from a couple days ago. :D Not too much news in there though. I also realized that I was interlacing my photos, so they took longer to load. I should probably stop doing that. :D Although I think interlaced looks better than normal...

edit: The date should be March 29, 2009. Sorry about that, I sometimes lose count. :)

Just a small update before Datsun.... Yes two replies! :D I'm hoping for an OSITM award to get more people to notice it by the way. ;)

The Final Map Has Arrived...

Here we see a small version of said map. Clickenzie here (http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/9053/finallargenoterra.jpg) for the large one.
This map will be used for all future references. The red line is an international border, the blue line is a provincial border. Likewise, red text is the name of a country, blue text is the name of a province. Black and underlined text is a capital, black text is the capital of a province. Red dot = provincial capital, yellow dot = national capital. The rivers, and a small lake, are unfortunately not named (not really too much space) but all other water features are named. Anything within a black line is land, except for the small lake, which can be found on the southern border of New Ammel. This map was traced from the sc4 mapper image, so it is completely accurate. A "terra" version with the terrain overlay can also be found here (http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/1491/finallargeterra.jpg) although the labels are quite hard to read.

About the flag:
Datsun has a long standing relationship to the fleur, as seen in the center of the flag. The fleur represents the religion and royalty (not too much these days) associated with Datsun. The blue represents water, and the gold the vast riches of the nation. With a population of over 33,000, Datsun is the most populous country in the LU. (so far)

Government:
Datsun used to be a monarchy before it was absorbed into the Svierestal Islands in 1834. When the Svierestal Islands broke up, the country changed to a simple democracy with a prime minister. (currently Marx Abonja)

Economy:
Datsun has a strong business and industry sector, with some farms mixed in there too. Most Datsun residents commute to the Morrten Isles, with over 10,000 jobs and only 3,000 people. The middle class has grown substantially from when Datsun was part of the Svierestal Islands. Many global companies, including the only airline to have flights to every airport in the LU, Trans-Latu Air (TLA) call Datsun home. Datsun is also one of the three left-hand drive countries in the LU. The other two are the Falkands and Kanne.

Religion:
Datsun's state religion is Orthodox, making up 97% of the population. The other 3% is Protestant. The country has a famous church located near the sea, and visible from Svierestal.

Maybe, to attract more writers you could lower the picture size a bit, to me 1mb is pretty big, since it takes a lot of time to load every picture..

I don't think there is a lack of interest. You need not measure yourself by the number of posts in your MD but by views as well. You only started your MD just over a month ago. At 965 views, at the time I write this post is a good sign of interest. The works out to be @ 28 views per day. :thumbsup: Sometimes it takes a little while to build up a following of regular posters. I would worry too much about it. Your work is great, your pictures are enjoyable and I am positive more will come and post when they feel the need.

Hello everyone, I am back from Shanghai, China! Boy was it fun! ;D Although I am completely out of it today, as a 13 hour time difference takes its toll on me. Thanks for replying, hopefully I should have an update today! I must say that being in a city with around 12 million people and the second or third worst pollution really inspired me. As a footnote, I always thought the American interstate system was quite clean and smooth, but with China having over 1 billion people, they have enough work to put hedges and such in the median! Wow! Very clean and smooth, and black. ::) Here are three of my favorite pictures that I took. Sorry for getting off-topic here, though. ::)

A large roundabout in the center of the city, were I almost got killed by a taxi, and you swear each time a bus turns out of the circle going about 50 MPH it will flip onto its side. :D

Datsun Part 1 (cont'd), The Rest of Ferrenjeva Island What else would I say?

The rest of Ferrenjeva Island, as so creatively stated in the title, consists of three large towns, and one industrial district. Kabellier, located on the southern end of the island, is home to the National Art Museum. The town itself is made up of only cobblestone streets, and is a great tourist spot. On the other end of the island (northern) sits the suburban-like town of Lurroni. The town used to consist of what was inside the ring road (a oneway oddly-shaped road that goes around the old town) but grew exponentially when Kokon Industries moved its headquarters here in the 70's. Benneaux is located in between the two towns, and isn't very special, if I must say so myself.

Nice to see that your updates always contain a great deal of volume. ;D

I very much like the organic feel to your towns and the distinctly European aura, though I think your newspaper could use some work. ::) The content is great but the design is a little lacking...I would suggest taking a look at the "Post Your Papers/Reports" thread on the SCJU forums for some good ideas. As you're using Photoshop (I think) then a neatly organized and realistic magazine isn't too difficult to attain. :satisfied:

Since You are complaining about few posters I put in a reply. ;D

I found my way to Your MD just now and I think it is good, although it isn´t completely in my taste, but that doesn´t mean it isn´t good...
The number of views on this MD says something about the interest in it, so don´t be sad for not getting to many replies, a lot of people generally just lurk around.
As a general tip though I would suggest lowering the datasize of Your images, they take too long to load if they are big and that might scare people off.
My tip would be to save the images as JPG instead of PNG as Jpeg generally takes up less space and thereby less bandwith.

As for the newspaper I have to agree that the content is OK, but the design could do with some overhauling.
Since I have never made one myself I can´t really offer any feedback on the difficulty, but if there is a tutorial kind of thingy over at SCJU it might be worth a closer look.
I will hang around for the next update and try to find something to write then as well... ;)

Datsun currently claims land on four of the six Morrten Isles. The largest, Issum Isle, is a nice touristy town with a fancy, yet slightly out of place, hotel. The town hall is currently looking at land reclamation to expand the island, although they are running into some problems with the Sea Protection Treaty, which, as clearly stated in the title, protects the sea from projects like land reclamation and off-shore oil drilling. The two islands of Senaska Island and Westetton Island were the guinea pigs of the LU's Commercial Stimulation Plan, which had a huge affect on the islands. The two islands now have (combined) over 8,000 jobs. :o The smallest, and most flood prone, island belonging to Datsun, Kittehsburg Island, is a great place to live during the summer, but not during the spring, when the Fevrie Ocean rises about 24 centimeters.

I certainly liked Your update I9113N!

About the only thing I can say apart from being amazed as usual by Your creativity and intrigue is that I find it a bit strange to see highrises on such small islands.
However one has to look at demand and availability factors as well and if space is premium one has to build upwards to keep up the number of inhabitants... ;)
Nice job on the newspaper too, it is always interesting to see what You have brewed up in the LU for Your updates...

Basic Overview:
Some people prefer to compare Dostrovek to Manhattan and the Netherlands combined. Dostrovek's largest city and capital, Orkut, is at its highest point only 8 meteres above sea level. This low height forced the city to create a large dike to protect the city from floods. Today we will be looking at the city's South Side, home to Centrenov Park and Illutsk International Airport. The city of Orkut is not only the current largest city in the LU (350,000 people) it is also the home of several great artists and architects. Over 300 global corporations are based in Orkut alone, the largest being Svensko & Darmin Corp., similar to the U.S.'s Dow Jones. Svensko & Darmin occupies the entire Olloski Buidling, the tallest building on the Latusian Peninsula (LP).

Location:
Dostrovek is located in the northwestern corner of the LP. Here we can see a map of southern Dostrovek. Red marks international borders, blue marks provincial borders, light blue marks county borders, and yellow marks dense areas. As you can see, most of Dostrovek is very dense. Dostrovek is the ~~third densest country in the LU, after Korgia & Hunsinia~~ densest country in the LU. All caps letters (black) mark cities, all caps letters (blue) mark provinces, all caps letters (red) mark countries.

About the Flag:
Dostrovek, being one of the five countries to break away from Ruska seven years ago, still has traces of the old Communist Regime, mainly in the flag. The blue color represents water (as always) and the red represents freedom. ( ()what() how did they get that?)

Language:
Dostrovek's main language, Dostro Ruskian, is a pidgin language made up of Ruskian and a bit of Szemette. The second most widely spoken language is English, followed by Ruskian. Dostrovek is also home to two ethnic languages, Vistuk and Loponksustovi.

Economy:
The economy of Dostrovek is heavily dependent upon oil from Ruska (this explains the recent economic crash) and the huge corporations it is home to. These large corporations include financial giants Hurfo Finance, Opta-Mari Inc., Swerton Insurance, and Qeisza International, which recently failed. :o The Dostro economy is also closely intertwined with the rest of the LU's. There is saying that says "If you think there's going to be a recession soon, just look to Dostrovek, and your fears will be answered," meaning that anything happening to the economy first happened in Dostrovek, which is true of the current economic recession.

Religion:
Dostrovek, unlike other northwestern LP countries, has free religion. Most of the citizens (67%) are Orthodox, and 29% are Protestant.

Government:
Dostrovek's government is a simple democracy, with a new Prime Minister elected every 3 years. The PM can be re-elected as many times as the public wishes.

Wow. You put a lot of effort in your picture. Lots of photoshopping, nice camera point and motive selection, lot of effort in your layout. And since you use JPEG instead of PNG there's a big chance that one page loads within an acceptable time! ;)

I just sometimes miss the context - I mean you put in some nice maps but I don't know where we are on the maps ...

Dostrovek Part 1: a massive update, my friend. I agree with Bernhard, though. It would really be helpful to see all that tied up with a map, or even a couple of them. Beautifully done, though- make no mistake about that.

I like the politics You have put in to this with Ruskia vs. Lu and the break-out states, I would like to take the opportunity to thank You for Your efforts to keep this story intense and interesting.
However it is sometimes difficult to quickly understand what is happening where compared to eachother, so a map update wouldn´t hurt...
Also the design of the Daily laty leaves a little to more to wish for, but it is not a problem, the contents make up for it more than well. ;)
I particularly liked the airport pics, it reminds me a bit of La Guardia and other City-center airports.

First thing's first: I am kind of skipping Dostrovek Part 1b because I'm having trouble getting one of Bixel's huge apartment buildings to grow.

Anyways, Orkut Island is an island in between Old Orkut to the north and Orkut's South Side to the south (duh). The island is home to the tallest building in the LU, not to mention the second and third tallest. The island alone has over 50,000 jobs in it. Fortunately, Orkut has a subway system, so traffic (although at times horrific) isn't all that bad.

Neura Paralotsk, which translates into "New Parliament" is a brand new development of three large office buildings built entirely on reclaimed land. The offices house 80% of Dostrovek's government. Although the official parliament is still in Old Orkut, (along with the PM's house) this new parliament complex is due to replace the old one by 2010.

Old Orkut, home to the Muach Niatta (Gateway Needle), Ullatov Posa (Ullatov Street), and Pavel's Point, is a great place to spend a weekend. :P The first settlers of Orkut built their homes here along the ancient canals that drain the Schusopav Basin (Northwest Dostrovek Lowlands) After many thousands of years and a few STEX downloads, the small village turned into the large bustling city that we see today. Only two years ago, the Dostro government approved a plan to create a reclaimed island off of the western shore of Old Orkut, titled Lukaov Island. Originally, Pavel's Point Tower was to be the "Gateway Tower" until the new island built it's Muach Niatta. Both buildings are still major tourist spots.
Ullatov Posa is the main tourist attraction in Orkut, though. Along it lies the two inconspicuous row homes that house the Prime Minister of Dostrovek. If one didn't know that behind the cafe and book store lied the most important home in Dostrovek, they would never have guessed. The two row homes were voted the second "Weirdest Place to House a PM" last year.

The LU is divided into four regions: the Northwest, the Eastboard, the Midlands, and the Southwest. These regions also determine where airlines can and cannot fly, although all airlines go to major cities. Each region has a specific airline, plus some privately owned companies. NW: United Ruska, EA: Eastboard Air, MD: Falkair, SW: Trans-Latu Air. In addition to the regional are the privately owned airlines Lutuja Air, Air Neva, Poklinj Airways, New Ruska Air, Svattonj Aeroflat, Kisza Aeroflat, and Lumanso Flutje.

Great pictures and awesome looking city you have. Your city is very pleasing to the eyes and I love how there seems to be a center to your downtown core with the tallest skyscrapers there. Fantastic work, I will definately be back for more.

Unfortunately, I will not be able to update today. I have a very busy day today, which includes several parties ( &prt ) and some silly event. So, in the meantime, I shall content you all by giving you two more maps. Obviously I have not been playing SC4 as much as I should have been this week.

Population Density Map:

The following map shows population densities throughout the LU. It also shows the names of major cities. Densities are as follows:

As one can clearly see, the densest area of the LU is the Northwest, followed by the Midlands, then the Eastboard, and lastly the Southwest. Even on a different world, the human instinct to settle near water can be seen here. The only major cities found inland are Wersberg, Vollinburg, and a small pocket of densely populated land in northwestern Dostrovek. Although, one can argue that the reason most inland areas are sparsely populated is because of the three mountain ranges in the LP, which explains the high densities followed by white in Neva, Kanne, and eastern Pol-Monterre. Of course the opposite side could argue that there are no mountain ranges in the Northwest, which is very true. This map is useful if you want to get an idea of what each country will be like when you click the update linkies. ;)

Land/Water Feature Map:

This map shows many land and water features of the LP. Useful when you want to know what river you're looking at, or what the name of that big lake over there is. ()stsfd()

On this map, we can see the three major mountain ranges, the Bellatone and Monsolle mountains, and the Saguv Foothills. The Bellatone form the border of Ementrosia and Pol-Monterre, and the Monsolle form the border between Pol-Monterre and Neva, and also engulf most of Kanne. South of the Monsolle mountains is the Ammjet Peninsula, famous for the booming city of Sedjorski. Unfortunately there is a spelling error in the Bay of Sedjorsk. Heading north again and a bit to the west, we see the great Salles Reservoir, with the large river leading out of it, the Addenostoph. Slightly west of the Addenostoph is the Asken river, which spans the height of the LP. West of the Asken lies the River Malay, which originates from a spring in the Bellatone mountains.
West of the Malay lies the Polish plains, known for the massiv Katujev Forest. Along the coast of the Polish plains is Wersten Bay, Cape Velle, and part of Ammes Bay. Going north through the Bellatone we come to the Ott Akmaarn, which translates into "Great Kettles." These interesting hills and valleys were formed by currents in the Sea of Linin, which were powerful enough to shape the ever-moist landscape before the sea drained away. What is left is a great place to go camping and take a train ride. East of the Ott Akmaarn lie the Sjedo Plains, forming the heart of the Midlands.
Further east and across the Asken River sits Lake Osjedo, named for the great Ammelian explorer who helped settle New Ammel. Osjedo forms part of the border of three countries, and is not only a famous tourist spot, but now a great way to flee the Falkands if you're a Jewish refugee. Further north of Lake Osjedo are the Eastern Plains. West of the Eastern Plains are the Saguv Foothills. Just north of the Saguv foothills is the Montosia Floodplain, also known as Lisvak Ka Anstualo or "The Fertile Farmlands," as the Montosian soil is very rich. Northeast of the flat Montosia Floodplain are the Vestuack Foothills, which form the northern edge of the LP. Northwest of them are the Chergy Lowlands, home to the cross between the Netherlands and Manhatten.

Dostrovek Part 4, Old Industrial & New Reclaimed Districts

In this VERY small update, we will be taking a look at the old industrial district of Orkut along with a large section of newly reclaimed land. Of course, who would put a dirty industrial district in the middle of such a nice city? Well, I wouldn't... As a result of steady tourism declines, the city decided to turn the district into a new, dense residential / commercial center, although there are a couple of blocks of industry remaining. The main feature of the district is the Kobolov Crescent, five individual buildings placed in a crescent shape. The district also has a brand new train station.
While this may all seem pretty and dandy, unfortunately, the district still has a large oil-powered power plant, which was due to be replaced two years ago, but an accident (cough) occurred during the construction of its successor, a large nuclear power plant located upstream, closer to the Korgian border. :D
The newly reclaimed district is set close by the airport, and is only separated by a canal. The district has a few large residential projects as well as many office buildings.

A Detailed Look at the Latusian Postal System

Inspired by the postcard... :D

Mailing Process:

Civilian buys letter.
Sendee goes to local post office to get envelope addressed.
Post office prints return address, receiving address, return/receiving country's flag, and any special symbols.
Sendee buys stamp, places it on envelope; then places content inside of the envelope.
Sendee sends mail via post office.
Mail is sent to receiver.

There are, however, certain requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to send the letter. If any one of these is not fulfilled, the sendee gets an ‡L 20 fine, plus an additional ‡L 5 for any other missing requirements. These requirements include a valid address, valid country flags, valid postmark, and a valid ID code. The ID code is used in case any of these requirements are not met. The ID code is the number of a file on the postal service's computer network which shows exactly who bought the envelope and where he/she lives. I should mention that you can only buy envelopes at the post office; as only the post office makes the country flags and prints the ID codes.
But of course, this raises the question, what if someone where to fake an ID code on a fake envelope? Well, the post office's scanning system will cross-reference envelopes and ID codes and other things such as class, special symbols, and most importantly, date. The date is imprinted on the envelope's basic sender's address.
One thing that you may be wondering about is that code in all of the addresses. It is always last, and it is sort of like the post office's signature. The first number is always going to be a 2, 5, 4, or 3. 2 is for the Eastboard, 5 for the Northwest, 4 is for the Southwest, and 3 is for the Midlands. The second number identifies what country the post office is in. The second number is anything between 1 and 14, listing the countries in no particular order (1-Auchtenaliastov, 2-Kanne, 3-Dostrovek, 4-Malia, 5-The Falkands, 6-Pol-Monterre, 7-New Ammel, 8-Jonkoland, 9-Ementrosia, 10-Svierestal, 11-Korgia, 12-Datsun, 13-Hunsinia, 14-Neva) The third number is for the province, and fourth is the city. In the specific addresses, the number is followed by two dashes and a two-digit number. This number identifies what post office it is.

So, we could have, for example:

An envelope from Jane Doe, who lives in St. Galliva, Abaroskia, Pol-Monterre. Her post office number is 51, and she lives in apartment 14, Jaspa St. So, her envelope's sender's address code would look like this.

The fourth region (SW), the sixth country (Pol-Monterre), the third province (Abaroskia), in the sixteenth city (St. Galliva), from the 51st post office.

This was something new to me in an MD, detailed procedure on how to send mail...
It seems rather bureaucratic however to have to go to a postoffice to buy and send Your mail, but I suppose it make for an excellent reason to increase the email traffic which I suppose is also somehow controlled by some authority. ;D
Here in Sweden in real life all email traffic crossing the borders of the country are subject to the auhorities watchful eyes should they find a reason for it...

Pol-Monterre Part 1, Rural Poland

First thing first: I got sick of urban, and decided to show some of rural (not the earth one) Poland.

The white triangles of this flag represent purity, as the Monterrians are known for being pro-Puritan. The green represents the vast forests that cover the Polish Plains and provide a major source of income for the country. The red bands stand for courage and the Polish people, and the crest stands for bravery. The words Marra ca Niftalo -- Senna la Ponozto translate into All our Roads -- Lead to the Senna "La Senna" is a large temple in the capital city of Senna. It played a major role in Pol-Monterre's future during the breakup of the Svierstal Islands and during the period of time when the LU was just beginning to take shape.

Economy:

The economy of Pol-Monterre is based on industry, the leading of which is the lumber and paper. The country also exports large amounts of electricity to the Svierestal Islands and the Falkands.

Language:

Pol-Monterre's official languages are Monterrian, English, and Raczuat. Monterrian is closely related to the Earth language French, while Raczuat (pronounced Rah-CHOO-aht) can be compared to the fusion of German and Polish. Raczuat is spoken mostly on the coast of Poland.

Today we will be looking at the rural are of Poland. The area borders the large Katujev Forest made up almost entirely of lodgepole pines. The are is home to five small towns: Lé Sciona, Ascona-Çeteaux, (not sure if this is right) Shimaneaux, Dorfbourg, and Knightingsand. Today we will be visiting most of Lé Sciona and the outskirts of Ascona-Çeteaux. This region is crisscrossed with many railroads and B roads plus one A (autoroute) road. Don't mind the numbers on the labels of B and A roads, I'll get into that later.

HOWEVER

I don't know much of Poland - mainly the connection between Warsaw and Torún as well as Torún itself but I cannot remember that there was only one level crossing on the national road betweem Warsaw and Torún at all. ()sad()

It might be difficult to have an overpass at Ascona-Çetaux but I know you'll find a better way for that layout.

I must have forgotten to remind people that this is not real life Earth Poland. The only reason that this area is named Poland is because I like the name and at that time had a complete blank when naming it, save for already existing names. :) Sorry if I took your post the wrong way.

Answer accepted - you know there are so many fine MDs here from Germany's eastern neighbour that I thought this would be a polish MD, too.

On the other hand there's still that level crossing on the highway ... It has been a while that I wrote a large text with lots of examples and picture about level crossings that become the start of my "Thoughts" - thread that might have changed a lot of peoples style to the better. If you read it you might understand my a bit harsh reaction to that level crossing. ;)

Pol-Monterre Part 1b, The Reworking of an Exit...

Well, after having a look at Nardo69's "thoughts" thread, and seeing the very large red print... :-[ I have decided to redo the intersection between Ascona-Çeteaux and the A 4-2. Here we have the old intersection:

The major problems that face the proposed reworking of this intersection are:

1: There is a rail line just before the intersection, which shouldn't cross the highway at all. :-[

2: There is a limited amount of space; a town to the south, rail to the west, rail to the north (not shown) and the "end" of the SC4 tile to the east.

So, I decided to first create an underpass that goes under the rail line.

Then, I decided to use the RHW B style exit for the offramp to Ascona-Çeteaux, and an A style onramp that leads off of the B road to Ascona-Çeteaux:

Now I needed a way to connect the onramp and the B road. So, I built a one-way overpass that goes over the beginnings of the A 4-2:

Finally, I added some flora and signage to create the final product:

So, now if you were heading to Ascona-Çeteaux, you would take the exit onto the B road. If you were heading to either Lé Sciona or Knightingsand (not shown) you would follow the B road over the RHW and onto the A 4-2. The only problem is that a B road can't just turn into a one-way road, so instead there is a "must turn left" sign, followed by a dead end sign. Past the dead end sign is a simple street that just, well, ends.

First off, I think I forgot to mention that the last post by me was supposed to be an update. I am confident that you all looked at it anyways, even if you didn't reply. :) I have to confess that the Lower Countries isn't going as well as it should be. With the end of the school year drawing near, I have had continually less and less time to spend making updates, let alone Daily Latys. So, I have planned a very large update for when school gets out, and that should content all of you for a while. I am currently trying to get a Daily Laty scraped together, but don't expect much more for a few days. :)

Great update, it was nice to see the reworking of the highway intersection.

Pol-Monterre Part 2, Sherishameaux and Ascona-Çeteaux

First of all, I have just recently realized that I put Ascona-Çeteaux, Lé Sciona, and Knightingsand as all in Poland. Actually, they are all in the state of North Monrault. Sorry for that confusion. The only city in Poland is Sherishameaux.

Sherishameaux, one of a few walled cities in the LU, was the last stronghold of Poland during the Polish Wars in Looks for sheet... oh fudge I threw it away... the 1930's. Within the city's walls lie some (at the time) very important buildings, most of which have now been turned into shopping centers. Outside of the city is an old canal, behind which is a restored section of the Polish Border Wall. The town is a major commercial center.

Ascona-Çeteaux is actually two cities. The first, Ascona, is smaller, more low-rise, and not quite as wealthy as Çeteaux. In-between Ascona and Çeteaux is a small island surrounded by two small canals. The island houses a theater and church. Beyond that is Çeteaux, home of the North Monrault Bidroskaz, or Sentinel.

This was a very nice looking update, the images are so rich with detail. Especially liked the picture of Evrana Station, Knightingsand. The house with the blind wall in the background is a nice touch.
Don't know exactly what kind of climate you are going for here, but seems the palms are looking a bit out of place in some of your shots.

Pol-Monterre Part 3, Central Senna

Senna is the capital of Pol-Monterre. I might have forgotten to mention this, but Pol-Monterre is a constitutional monarchy. The current king and queen live in the Palai Centrale. Here is a recent photo of Pol-Monterre's current queen, Queen Klassia II. (the king died in a car accident, apparently he wasn't wearing his seatbelt) :D

Yes, I know who that is. She is no longer queen of Belgium, she is now queen of Pol-Monterre.

Anyway, the city has many canals, and a large Parliament complex, locally known as Praleux Sectique, or Parliament District. It is also home to the famous Émbassieures Building, home of over twenty different embassies. The building, sadly, was also the victim of a bombing in 1974, just three years after opening. The building has since been refurbished, and is now guarded quite efficiently. The large letters on the top floor of the building can be seen from over five kilometers away at night, even if they have been somewhat distorted by years of constant winds.
The city also has a small historic district, with some lovely cafés overlooking a canal.

I haven´t been able to access the site for some time due to technical reasons, but now that I´m back I fully enjoy Your updates.
It is interesting to see what one can do with Nordic styled buildings such as the Norwegian Royal Castle and Prepo´s townhouses, it looks good here though!
Keep the story going, it is always interesting to see what´s happening in the LU...

Durrio is the official capital of the Latusian Union. The mid-sized city is located in a hot and somewhat dry area of southern Neva. Each of the LU's boards (groups that represent a sector of the LU, i.e., Board of Education) has an office in this city. Some of the more important ones have entire buildings.
But, the largest and most distinctive building in the city is the Latusian Union Building. This building and its next door neighbor, the Hanse Building (named after Richard Hanse, the first president of the LU), basically run the Union. It forms the umbrella over all of the other boards, and makes final decisions. There seems to always be a news reporter at the front door.

This is looking great. I like your new intro, it is always nice to get an overview, and I also just enjoy to see how everyone is making these kind of maps.
For the palms there is a mod to remove them, maybe here on the LEX but most probably on the STEX it is from Swamper.

You may be wondering what the red is for:

The LU has a distinct road color scheme. The narrow side lane, referred in the LU as the "lap," has one of three colors: None, which means the speed limit is 30km. This is used on streets. Red, which means the speed limit is 50km. This is used on one-way and two-way roads. Blue, which means 70km. This is used on avenues. Also on one-way roads, small arrows in the red "lap" tell the driver which direction he/she should be driving in.

Well, with Summer becoming really really busy, and putting the textures into the game becoming really hard, I have a lot less time to update. Today, however, I had a few hours of free time, so I decided to do something that I haven't done for several months:

Pol-Monterre Part 4, Château de Pariset

Le Château de Pariset, commonly known as Pariset, (pronounced pair-ih-say) is a small town located near the River Asken, which flows down the entire LP to the Strait of Korsh. South of Pariset is Pol-Monterre's capital, Senna. The town is famous for its multiple museums and landmarks, not to mention some of the pedestrian-only roads and multiple canals and ponds. The city employs a unique style of Agastasian architecture known as Le Verinau-de-Pars. The city also has a few famous manors located on some of the canals. These manors house wealthy and powerful families that can change a town's history.

Even though the name Château de Pariset hints at a castle or huge manor, there is none. The original Château de Pariset belonged to the Pariset family, who founded the town in the early 1400's. The castle managed to survive until the 1600's, when it was destroyed during a siege of the city by a neighboring kingdom. The Pariset family no longer exists, sadly.

In the 1940's, the town experienced a huge amount of growth, because of a new economic deal with the Falkands. To house the workers for the new companies created, long rows of row homes were erected. Some of them are tall, usually with a parkway in-between two roads. Some of them are low-class, housing many poor families in affordable housing.

The Official Szemettian pronunciation of Szemette is Shtehmeht

And how is that spelled in Szemettian?

It is spelled Śrėŋėr

But that looks like it's pronounced Srehner.

Today, we will look at the confusing language of Szemette.

Szemette is spoken by about 1 million people in the LU, and is the official language of Malia, Korgia, and Hunsinia. The Szemettian alphabet contains 42 letters. They are:

Szemette is a unique language in that it has one letter for each sound, plus about five "combination" letters; anything from common word endings or just a "sh" or "ch" sound.

The alphabet is pronounced as follows, but the first letter is pronounced like the a in "dad."

ah, ay (long), ahh, bah, chah, sah, kah, dah, ee, eh, fah, far, gah, hah, eye, ee, ih, lah, mah, nah, oh, oo, pah, qwah, rah, tah, etah, you, uh, vah, wah, exah, yah, zah, tyah, chia, shah, ege, owah, ehstrah, shtrah, and ahc.

The last word is extremely hard to pronounce unless you speak German or any other language that uses the sound. It makes a sort of hissing sound thing, it's best example is in the German word for I, Ich.

To give examples of Szemette in daily use, here are a few roadsigns found in Hunsinia.

This one says "Cities" at the top, pronounced shtowfah.

The first city is Weir, pronounced just so. After the city name is the exit one should take to get to said city, and then the distance to the city from this sign.

The following cities are pronounced Ohnburg, Ahsooee, and Vahtoosk, which is in Korgia, hence the green KO.

Below the white line is "Next Exit," pronounced nehts ooeehs. After that is the exit number and the distance from sign to exit.

Below that line are arrows pointing to the ramps and their direction, and what they lead to. The first arrow pointing left is for exit 421c to the E-4. It is pronounced fee-zei-oohn see zah ee fee. The reason the signs have the English letters c, a, and b is because Szemette does not allow people to use the normal alphabet letters as abbreviations or labels like "421b." Hence, they use English.

This sign shows the exit number and speed limit:

This sign is a general information sign that shows what motorway you are on, cities and their exits and distances, the two nearest countries and their exits, and the speed limit for three lanes of traffic. This particular motorway is the Ej 4 going south.

The cities are pronounced Olm, Eyexowchah, Ateek, and Ehfburg.

Dostrovek Part 5, Konnestov and Lososburg

Today we skip back to Dostrovek, this time to a semi-rural area north of Orkut. It is west of Destovo on this map:

The area in the eastern county of Dovo is home to many small ponds and lakes. In fact, the small town of Konnestov is only 10 meters above the medium size lake it is next to. To fix this problem, underground pumps in some of the ponds regularly drain the ponds in case of a flood. If the flood comes, the water will fill the ponds and the town will hopefully be saved. Unfortunately, this has a success rate of only 60%. Most people living in Konnestov cannot afford to live inside of the "Oonsatte," a 20 meter tall dirt wall built to protect the agricultural and populated lands of Lososburg. For a long stretch of the Oonsatte, the E-8 is on top, creating a scenic view and gusty winds for drivers. On one side, sandy and grassy beaches followed by the dark lake water. On the other side, forested areas, farms, and Lososburg.

Please disregard the small sections of LU styled roadways, the area is in the process of re-paving roads to meet the new road design standards. ;)

hey everyone-bad news :thumbsdown:

while an anti-virus program was trying to remove an unremovable virus, Windows shut down and cannot start. I am currently running a demo version of Kubuntu. My external hard drive has all of my SC4 stuff and LU stuff, but I don't know if I can do much with it at this point. I have a feeling I will have to reinstall Windows. So, I won't be updating for a while. The Election will be put on hold. ()sad()

Hellooo everyone! $%Grinno$% Obviously, I have returned. Most unfortunately, that silly virus wiped my hard drive! &cry2 But, I reinstalled windows and am now running Ubuntu as my default OS. I am slowly but surely going through the LEX and the STEX to get back all of the plugins I lost. Do not expect any real updates for quite a while. Probably the most you can expect is the Daily Laty and perhaps updates on the election. I do not have Photoshop for the time being, but I should have it soon. :)

Kanne Part 1, Gann

Well, it is great to be finally updating again. I feel as though I have let you all down for a while. As you will notice, I had to make a new flag for Kanne, as the old one was lost. Plus, I like the new one better. Anyway, I created a region that is actually realistically sized, and is only the southern part of Kanne.

--About the flag:

The Kannese flag majorly symbolizes the amount of religion in Kanne. The country is known as the center of religion, with a church of some sort in every city. The flag has two crosses, the one in the upper left hand corner represents the minority religions in Kanne such as Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Evangelical, and a bit of Islam. The large turned cross, also known as a Scandinavian cross, represents the major religion in Kanne, Protestantism.

Government: The Kannese government is a simple direct democracy. The country has a Kärnesto, the Kannese term for Governor.

Language: Kanne speaks Kannese, essentially a mix between Monterrian and Low Falkish. The further south you go, towards Monterre, the more Monterrian things sound. Likewise, the further north you go, the more Falkish things sound. Also, a small pocket of population in the eastern areas will speak a Nevian dialect of Kannese, known locally as Langíse du Mitteland, essentially "Language of the Middle-lands." The name has "middle" in it for obvious reasons, as the dialect is made up entirely of three languages put together, and it is spoken in the middle of this conglomeration of languages.

Unto the update. Gann is a small town of about 10,000 located in a vale in the far south-east of Kanne. The only reason the names are more Falkish here is because the Falkands are just across the river.

Kanne Part 2, Beschlat Bemault

The Beschlat Bemault, which translates into "Misty Mountains," are not very mountainous, but they are most certainly misty. The more proper term would be "hills and valleys," but misty has a better ring to it. Anyway, the Beschlat Bemault is where you will find the best in mystical beauty that southern Kanne has to offer. By day the eastern slopes are covered with a soft blanket of moisture blown across the Salles Reservoir by perennial wind currents, and by night the moisture settles onto the ground, creating strangely clear air. The next day, more moisture is blown in, and the process repeats.
Not only are the Beschlat Bemault home to a large quantity of water, they are home to many large villas and mansions, many of which with excessively long names denoting their hierarchical status, such as the Groß Mettnichter Šponnärich, the home of the equally excessively powerful family of Mettnichter Šponnärich the Great. Besides the large villas that contain excessively creative people who love long and complicated names, the Beschlat Beault are home to a few Opperlinen, lonesome buildings all alone somewhere in the hills. A good example of one such Opperlinen is the Church Aaron St.Lusteneim, a small and lonely church located at the top of a hill overlooking the small towns that dot the area around the Salles Reservoir.
The hills are also home to a variety of "Special Purpose" Opperlinen, one such being the famous "Residence of Banished Peoples," home to over 20 important and rich people banished from their native lands. Besides all of the above, the scenic hills are home to the Schvelbör Bundespark, a national park full of beautiful sites, most notably a riverbed that fills with waters in spring only.
You will also notice that there are some towns that are not pictured in this update, (it may say, near blahtyblah) the two of them being Märnaburg and Kreistesse.

Do you back up your computer at all? If you don't, I would suggest that you get one of those 1.5 Tb external hard drives and some backup software. It's saved me a couple of times ;)

Kanne Part 3, Farms of the Beschlat Bemault

First of all, I would like to apologize for not updating last week when I was supposed too. I had the pictures (now in this update) but never got around to posting them. So now, I have pictures for another update ready now. There should only be a couple more updates of Kanne as I show the capital city and some towns, then perhaps I will show the eastern mountains or something.
But there is a chance that I will be showing New Ammel soon...
Anywho, the region around the Beschlat Bemault is known for its agricultural fertility, mainly because of the Salles Reservoir's constant rains, and the rich soil. You can find many farms squished between Märnaburg and Ven Sansdorf, and there is a new agricultural area south of Gann. Around the area, there are a few Ruès de Fedrâliestes / Bundstrallten / Strata Fedíralto (depending on where you're from, the South, North, or East in order), essentially federal highways. Most notable is the superior grading of the roads, which is done using railroad standards. You will see a few of them in the pictures.

Ouch! Tough Luck. Good thing it was under warranty. They're not that expensive though. Well, not anymore. I got mine for $150.

Great update! I always love a good rural scene. I'm Looking forward to the next update.

Love those farms, they give a nice calm and rustic feeling. :thumbsup:

Kanne Part 4, Ven Sansdorf & Mont Lusailles

In this slightly northern area of southern Kanne, we see the line between Falkish and Monterrian begin to blur. Ironically, in this region of southwest Kanne, the further south you go, the more Falkish it is. The closer into the middle area of the country you get, the more Monterrian things are. A language map would be most helpful here...
Anyway, Ven Sansdorf is a somewhat large suburban town east of Gann and north of Märnaburg. It is located at the foot of a semi-moderately large hill called Mont Lusailles. On the hill is the picturesque town of Mont Lusailles, once home to a Monterrian monastery. The monastery, sadly, was accused of being filled with heretics in the late 5th century, and was thus burnt, destroyed, and its bricks used on the city streets. Recently, the demand for low cost housing in Ven Sansdorf and Mont Lusailles has gone up, and thus, you will see some little condo-like apartments, usually within walking distance of a park or something.

Lol it's just like me to go and make a language map of Kanne. Not the best quality, I know, but deal with it. You should be able to match colors to languages by yourself. If you can't (which is pathetic), red=Nevian, blue=Falkish, and yellow=Monterrian.

To bad there isn't a tree controller, plopping tree by tree is quite time consuming.

Well, to be honest, I completely forgot I had an MD in the first place until today. &Thk/( Pathetic, I know. Well, I've begun to work on a few informative maps including language, religion, topographical, population density, pollution, and hopefully agricultural. Don't be surprised if there are some maps listed here never made, and don't be surprised if I make a few not listed. Meanwhile, I'm just beginning to take pictures of Kanne City, Kanne's capital.
