Founder's Park at the corner of 6th Street and Mission Street. The rest of the mission was destroyed in an earthquake in the late 1800's, and what is there is all that remains. The arch was built as a memorial in 1922 to the sixteen men who saved the city from being abandoned.

The Second Street Promenade. Up until 1993, it was a giant parking lot that left the buildings along it abandoned and crumbling. The City Council launched a massive plan to renew the area, and it succeeded in less than a year. It's considered one of the city's great tourist attractions.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg19.imageshack.us%2Fimg19%2F410%2Fupdate1image10.jpg&hash=89ea2e223af054a8aa28996a1bafd1c726936e8f)

The Federal Courthouse at the end of the Second Street Promenade. The art sculpture, titled Advancing, was put in place in 2001.

That's the first update! Now, which neighborhood will be next? You'll find out in a day or two! Enjoy!

Pat: You better believe I'm back! Oh, and good to hear.

Sciurus: Thanks, although this isn't a first journal from me. I will say this is the best of them though. By the way, I like your avatar. Huge House fan here.

Update 2: NoPo (North Penbrooke) & A Teaser

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F8808%2Fupdate2image1.jpg&hash=3c711fe95220d379b8e6b3fa3edb477dd88ed530)

Riverside on Penbrooke, a new development just across from downtown. It was built on reclaimed land as the original land washed away during a flash flood two decades ago.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F6218%2Fupdate2image2.jpg&hash=fee5e8ecd188d2aec969274e7f020ed623eaf000)

Three new condo towers have sprung up on the new development, and for the empty plot, developers are still fighting as to what to do with it. One group wants to build a mini-mall, another an auto mall, and a third wants to build a park. Who knows when they will arrive at a decision?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F320%2Fupdate2image3.jpg&hash=db0883b4cc29af61f2626f0987c84ef8652f404f)

The Santa Rosita River, once a toxic cesspool, has been cleaned up significantly in the last decade. At the top is the Freedom Bridge, named in 2002 after a significant portion of the Latino population marched across the bridge to fight for legislation allowing all illegal immigrants to become citizens.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F8643%2Fupdate2image4.jpg&hash=2d6052eee4f4fd396e6ee9258ca8238fb207c53a)

Homes at the base of the Rosemont Hills. These homes were all built at the same time in North Penbrooke. They all look the same because when they were built, people needed cheap homes. That, and there was only one architect in Santa Rosita, and it was too expensive to hire one from another city.

Teaser Time!

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg7.imageshack.us%2Fimg7%2F8480%2Fteaser1n.jpg&hash=65898e24236345e31331f6e5e9c35e35c195d154)

Hmm, I wonder which neighborhood this is . . . you'll find out in another day or two!

I apologize for the grid, I forgot to turn it off. Anyways, enjoy!

Very nice!!!

Compliment: Love the different neighborhoods you seem to have, and the embankments.

Suggestion: On the orange-roof neigborhood pic, the sidewalk texture changes to brick and back in spots, IMHO I would fix that

Wow Leo!  My first thought was: how can somebody name his own MD beautiful this or that, but Santa Rosita actually IS beautiful!

When looking at the first picture I thought "what an awfull neighbourhood" (well built - and a great picture...but kind of slummy, you know what I mean I hope)....

But the rest of the picture does INDEED show a beautiful town... even the 'cheap housing by one architect' part of town looks like a very pleasant quarter to me.. Well down Leo, and the beautiful in the title is justified

Pat: Sorry to take the fun out of it for you. Good to hear about the update and teaser!

bob56: Yes, there are many neighborhoods in Santa Rosita. It's based mostly on Downtown Los Angeles and the surrounding area, with some of the other neighborhoods crammed on the tile as well. As for the sidewalks, I'm currently working on fixing that. In the meantime, just try to ignore it. Thanks for commenting!

Sciurus: I know who he is: I'm one of his biggest fans. :D So much so, my fellow classmates have given me the nickname House just because of my near encyclopedic knowledge of the show. Thank you for commenting.

sebes: When I put beautiful in the title, it was more supposed to be part of some catchy travel slogan or something for the city. It's good to know someone as talented as you thinks the title is fitting. Also good to know you like SoPo, which is in essence a combination of Compton/East LA with . . . oh wait! I almost spoiled the surprise! You'll have to wait for a future update to find out. :)

Nexis4Jersey: Thanks!

Schulmanator: Good to know it's sweet dude! New stuff is definitely right, this beats the monkey nuggets out of Chase City! Forget rockin' on, let's party on!

I regret to say that with school starting again, I won't have as much (but still enough to churn out a big update or two every week) time for Santa Rosita. To tide everyone over, I have two more teasers from the same neighborhood as the last one. The first person to figure out which neighborhood it is exactly (no worries, it has a very generic name), they will be given the chance to name something, anything, in Santa Rosita. On to the teasers!

Pat: Per-CHA dude, Padres for the win! Yes, I should plan ahead more. No worries, I've barely scratched the surface of Santa Rosita (and its metro area). ;)

Sciurus: Thank you! Yes, it's Season Five over here. But don't worry, Season Four has just as many thrills, chills, and sarcasm as ever.

Update Three: The Civic Center

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F8373%2Fupdate3image1.jpg&hash=2dff67875d060569d58412ff306badcea393db18)

The southern half of the Civic Center. This is where the Santa Rosita Friars play, right at TIME Field. The field looks small for a city the size of Santa Rosita, and that's because of engineering concerns due to earthquakes. Fortunately, many enterprising people have rented out their offices and homes during games so people can watch from any of the buildings surrounding the field. Technically, it's illegal because most of the buildings can't handle the load of people, but the police and fire department look the other way since there's no way they could handle the crowd of 55,000 or so people who cram into the two-block radius.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F433%2Fupdate3image2.jpg&hash=45c39c211b4cdbff837c1e5fd48682caea462046)

Between 1928 and 1976, strict height limits in the Civic Center prevented anything from being taller than half the height of City Hall, which outraged the city's architecture critics and developers. After all their whining, the law was repealed. That still hasn't changed the fact that there's an empty lot full of potholes that only idiots would park in still occupies most of a city block.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F6409%2Fupdate3image3.jpg&hash=2363379503bda5de4b16468c48f98b659713b0d5)

The lobby of City Hall and the Sanchez Memorial Fountain. City Hall has been the location for many famous movies. Sanchez Memorial Fountain was named after the city's seventh Mayor, Alejandra Sanchez. Santa Rosita has always prided itself on being a place of equality, and it says something for a female El Salvadorian immigrant to become mayor . . . BEFORE the turn of the 20th Century. The fountain was dedicated one hundred years to the day she was inaugurated Mayor: February 19, 1993.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F5810%2Fupdate3image4.jpg&hash=7e6c05acf75230d5b6e855ce18b473144493c1a7)

Here one can see the spire of City Hall. The entire top two floors are just for the Mayor. The press isn't allowed to go there, so no one really knows what he's done with them. There are many theories circulating, such as he's converted the whole top floor into a mini golf course or that somehow, he manged to get his collection of rare Ferrari's up there and has made it a showroom for staff. Although that area is blocked off from the public, the area right above it is an open air observation deck. It's the only one in the city that's free.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F8094%2Fupdate3image5.jpg&hash=0d55543ed2be841c83373be27813b595989bc679)

The city's second main observation deck, it was built for the World's Fair in 1976, immediately following the repealed height restriction. Although, technically, it's just south of the Civic Center, in the . . . oh wait, that neighborhood will have to wait for another update.  :P

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F1673%2Fupdate3image6.jpg&hash=199a9f935717dcabcb76a5b4e9a9fb8d23da5b20)

In the top right corner is the only building in the Civic Center that actually broke the height restriction laws. The Bradbury Hotel, built in 1934, was just a few feet over what the restriction was. City officials didn't notice it until after the steel skeleton had been erected, so they gave it an official pass to stay that height. The reason they missed it? Apparently, the area on the blueprint where the height was, whoever was holding it somehow managed to cover up the last digit, an eight, with his thumb so it looked like a three. One can also see the Regal Theater, one of the theaters still remaining from the first half of the 20th Century.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg15.imageshack.us%2Fimg15%2F4084%2Fupdate3image7.jpg&hash=4f4b208efb01d57b2ff54ed847ac29e24fc6dafa)

Nothing too important in this image, except for the subway station. It was built in 2003 to be the terminal for the newly constructed Green Line, which went right under the Civic Center and then connected to the Blue Line, which runs most of the length of Bueller Avenue. It was a collaboration between Norman Foster and Frank Gehry. There were over one hundred different drafts and renders for this building because the two kept bickering over it. Finally, they reached an agreement: they would take Gehry's design, but cover it in Foster's glass. To this day, the two haven't spoken again. The empty lot next to it will soon be a new development. What it will be, no one really knows yet.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg16.imageshack.us%2Fimg16%2F4679%2Fupdate3image8.jpg&hash=ce3ce70b790c20a0db0faab5f3958a9f401ccc47)

That damned empty lot again. The three old buildings to the north of it, though, are of historical importance. They were the first three buildings to be constructed in the Civic Center after it received that official designation. On Game Day, each one of them has up to a hundred or so people crammed on the roof alone.

Teaser Alert:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg12.imageshack.us%2Fimg12%2F3205%2Fteaser4.jpg&hash=278e73b413afa8ab33c0788c15620806f637019e)

We'll have to save this neighborhood for next time. Simply put, it makes Compton look like Santa Monica. Next update soon!

:'( no season 5 for me :'(, damn Flemish tv!

upside: when season 5 finally makes it to the Flemish tv, it'll be in English. (dunno if RTL-TVI dubs House, but all the major French tv-broadcasters dub all non-French tv-shows)

It's about time for an update, don't ya' think?

Sciurus: Thanks! Nothing like hijacking a few channels to brighten your day. :P

WC_EEND: It is off-topic. Then again, I also tend to go off-topic, so I'd be a hypocrite to scold.

Sciurus: Stay on topic! :P

WC_EEND: Thanks dude.

Pat: Thanks! As some say, the greatest moments in history happened simply because of a stupid mistake. Anyways, if you liked the Civic Center, you're sure gonna like this one!

Nexis4Jersey: An urban oasis, you say? I don't see many palm trees. I will say this: there are much more beautiful areas in the Santa Rosita area (and its twin city's area). :P

Update Four: We Be Rollin' In Da SoPo (South Penbrooke) On A Dark, Stormy Day

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg22.imageshack.us%2Fimg22%2F200%2Fupdate4image1.jpg&hash=43af8d160834b1621d2761d5e6662ef1396f2cb7)

Eisenhower Square at the heart of the much hated SoPo neighborhood. Originally, this was one of the nicest neighborhoods in the city, built entirely from scratch after 1900. It was modeled partially on Brooklyn, as the first Mayor of South Penbrooke lived near the Brooklyn Bridge. Sadly, after World War II, the many returning veterans became unruly, and by the start of the 60's, it was deemed the worst place in North America. Now, gangs control the streets and the Russian and Sicilian mobs control the businesses, with each of them having battles in the night. The neighborhood is such a disgrace, Santa Rosita officially annexed the area as its own city and then closed it out from the rest of the city by surrounding it with new freeways. The only somewhat decent looking structures left in the SoPo are the churches, oddly enough. Some say it's because the Allici Family runs them.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg22.imageshack.us%2Fimg22%2F4412%2Fupdate4image2.jpg&hash=6cfd9c52dab41ccf19e5481cfa9145184a58d4b3)

St. Thomas Cathedral on Century Drive. SoPo once had an extensive and safe elevated rail, but after the Santa Rosita Metro extended a subway line to SoPo in 2003, there has been a massive dismantling operation underway. As of recently, because of the recession, many homeless people have found a way up on the tracks to camp out. Also on Century Drive is the city's first "affordable" housing project, built in 1947.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F4964%2Fupdate4image3.jpg&hash=5ebd2ee6e18e163e06d4c41ba5e4a1240bf72a97)

South Penbrooke High, rated by many independent sources as one of the Top Five Worst Schools in the United States. There have been many rumors that some of the teachers are gang members or even Family Heads. In November 2006, an all out war broke out on campus between the Italians and the Latino students that eventually led to the gym being blown up by a grenade someone had in their backpack. Yet, somehow, students keep flocking there as its easy to get to.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F5844%2Fupdate4image4.jpg&hash=515c6f0d8bbfbff8fe78faf81b912256ce823855)

The second housing project built in SoPo, aptly named the South Penbrooke Apartments Measure aka SPAM. People who live here are generally despised by the community because it's actually somewhat nice, with each apartment having every amenity needed. As a sign of hatred, people tend to lob flaming cans of Spam through windows or put them in the mailboxes.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg25.imageshack.us%2Fimg25%2F5307%2Fupdate4image5.jpg&hash=b77da1c5cbe55ab6342082649e8e552acd48158d)

Originally for the dismantling operation, small cranes were going to be built on top of the buildings. Sadly, on that very corner once stood a ten story apartment from 1924. On the first attempt to haul up some old rails, the entire facade collapsed under the pressure. The building was deemed habitable for a few weeks, showing just how corrupt the City Development Office is. Now, it's just dirt.

Okay, time for my first mosaic ever. Don't be hatin' if it isn't perfect, I have much to learn.

Sciurus: Yes, it's a ghetto! I sought to somehow combine Compton/Watts and Harlem. I don't know about you, but I think I succeeded.

WC_EEND: It is a ghetto! My very first one too, which might explain anything wrong with it.

Robin: Thanks for commenting! Not too many people say they like my style, and most are stunned when I say how I achieved it.

Time for something new and different!

POLL: Which Would YOU Rather Have Be The Twin/Rival City Of Santa Rosita?

1. Londinium
2. St. Francis
3. River City
4. Capital City

Each of those four cities is completely different, and there won't be any information given about the places until they are showcased, so you choose based on which sounds the best to you. All four of them are based on real world cities (some not what you think they are). :P Anyone can vote, and whatever's voted in, I promise I won't override it with my own will. Poll stays open between 24-48 hours! Please, have fun. :)

Mini Update: A Brief History of Capital City

Capital City was founded in 1668 by the Dutch. The original name of the settlement was New Eindhoven because the captain of the ship was born in Eindhoven. A disease now known to be the common cold spread rapidly through the village, prompting the Dutch to abandon it. In 1702, the British found the island with its rich resources and strategic location and named their settlement Torchwood, after the rich red colors of the trees on the island. During the Revolutionary War, it was the first city to be taken by the Patriots. The city kept growing as more and more valuable resources were found in the surrounding area. In 1810, it became the largest city in the United States. During the War of 1812, the British tried to retake Torchwood. They almost succeeded with the help of British loyalists. However, their plan backfired: when the loyalists planted Union Jack atop the tallest church spire, the British naval officers thought the city had surrendered and left. The more interesting thing is when Torchwood became the national capital. Over the course of the Civil War, President Lincoln was paranoid about the Capitol being taken by Confederate troops. Over the course of the war, he had Union troops move, brick by brick, both the Capitol and the White House to Torchwood. President Grant's first motion as President was renaming Torchwood to Capital City. Immediately afterward, the population grew dramatically and still is. Today, Capital City stands as the unofficial capital of the world, controlling most of the world's economy, fashion industry, arts, entertainment, and information.

The Fort Blanc Bridge, completed in 1886. It's the most heavily trafficked bridge in Capital City because it connects Torchwood (the original settlement area) to Downtown Fort Blanc.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg25.imageshack.us%2Fimg25%2F7756%2Fccteaser6.jpg&hash=156f23d2e55594cbdd10499d1daee45b5e93be43)

The Statue of Freedom, given as a truce offering from London in 1880. It wasn't assembled until 1886, and at the time, it was the second tallest structure in the city.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg18.imageshack.us%2Fimg18%2F7162%2Fccteaser2.jpg&hash=fa06ffcb3bcf5cc2847d2d5156d6fdcaa43242e4)

The first church in the city, Holy Sacrament Cathedral. Ever since the city was founded, it's stood at the western end of Bank Street, the most important economic place in the world. It also has the only remaining cemetery on the whole island.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg22.imageshack.us%2Fimg22%2F3764%2Fccteaser5.jpg&hash=8c9e80bcc42c6334ac4697f6b5747056c90f09cd)

The world famous Folsom Street Seaport and Market. Left abandoned after the Great Depression, it was renovated in 1993. It now proudly stands as one of the top ten tourist attractions in the city.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg22.imageshack.us%2Fimg22%2F4636%2Fccteaser4.jpg&hash=7cb6be072f9544a521cfbfec250ce1c4ed9bd466)

The instantly recognizable United Building, once the tallest in the world. Built right as the Depression started, it remained empty for a decade and a half. Now, it's the busiest building in the whole Capital District and provides some of the best views from it's observation deck.

Please, I ask of any viewers, if there's anything at all you'd like to see from Capital City (any area of the city, or anything else you can think of), please tell me. I have no problem making this a semi-interactive journal. Also, thank you for viewing.

It's beauitful, and do you reproduce NYC? $%Grinno$% Nad for info, the Staue of Freedom doesn't come from London, but from France, and it was designed by Gustave Eiffel, and it's a present from french to americans, for the birthday of a war I guess ;)

I just knew it: Santa Rosita has a Dutch touch ...lol... Of course, how else could it become the unofficial capital of the world  :P
Title: Re: Beautiful Santa Rosita
Post by: TopCliff on May 16, 2009, 05:00:36 PM
Nexis4Jersey: Thanks!

Sciurus: Well, not just New York. At the rate I'm going, it's more loosely based on New York than anything. Don't be hatin' on history! Everyone who's anyone knows the Statue of Freedom was a peace offering from England.  :P

sebes: Santa Rosita isn't Dutch: if anything, it's heavily Mexican influenced. Capital City, on the other hand, is partly Dutch, and you're correct that it's the unofficial capital of the world.

Now, normally I'd have an update by now. Sadly, SC4's going cuckoo lately and has been experiencing more and more crashing. Other bad news is that Capital City is taking longer than I thought to finish. There could be an update tomorrow, or at the latest, next weekend. Don't lose hope though!

Okay, I figured it's about time to satiate the appetites of those who like this journal. Due to many factors, Capital City has taken much longer than expected. I must say, I will be focusing more on Capital City for the time being because I've tried many times creating Los Angeles type cities (Santa Rosita being the best, of course) and frankly, I've grown a little bored of it. I will say, from the last time I showed you pictures of Capital City, I have done a considerable amount of work (still a lot needed though; I have a newfound respect for all those journalists who make their own NYC's). So, just so people can find the landmarks and such, I have an overview of the entire island as of half an hour ago.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg34.imageshack.us%2Fimg34%2F8705%2Fcapitalcityoverviewv2.jpg&hash=9a5f4d76a14c0e89355ed5d092626a8ea0d6390d)

And here's a link to a larger version, for everyone to enjoy.

I myself am not a fan of showing overviews because it reveals all the empty spots when up to this point, you've seen what looks to be a complete city. Either way, I hope these will tide you over for another half week to week.  :)

Pat: It's okay, no worries.
calibanx: That does mean a lot. I was going off pictures since it's been years since I was last in New York. Good to know that SoPo is down pat.

Okay, for starters: I'm not dead. Now that that's out of the way, I have not had much time for SC4. Plus, when I went to open Capital City, it was wiped away forever. That means I'll be giving 100% dedication to Santa Rosita now. I can guarantee there will be an update sometime in the next two weeks. I know, that's not very good, but I've trying to give up my latest computer addiction. So please, to prevent this from having another near death experience, let's hang in there! You can trust me on this. :D

Tomas Neto: Thank you.

Alas, I have good news and bad news. Unfortunately, the bad news must come first because the good news won't make sense otherwise. All right, bad news: in the last few days of playing Santa Rosita, it's become so taxing on my system that I either save each and every time I plop something or it crashes. It's gotten a little irritating, and yesterday when I tried to load the tile, it flat out crashed. So, bad news is Santa Rosita has become unplayable. Good news is it's only for the time being. I'm getting another external hard drive that I'm going to transfer all of SC4 over to so my laptop isn't handling the load. The other goods news is that in the mean time, I'll be starting a new region that, of course, I will showcase here. Santa Rosita is not dead, just comatose. In the next week or so, expect a new city, a type of city I've never tried before. Until then, later dudes.

Okay, I know what you're thinking: he's a triple poster! Only spammers do that! No, I'm not a spammer, I'm an informant. I'm here to sadly inform you of bad news (well, bad news for me, at least). Remember how the Capital City tile kept crashing? Well, for some strange reason, now the entire program is crashing, always at random intervals. Even with saving every minute, it's still not a minute. Basically, Capital City's completely gone, Santa Rosita is more finicky than a picky eater in a buffet, and Rosemont, my new experiment, is literally destroying itself.  &mmm We had a good run while it lasted, and I don't think I'll have a functioning city for a while.  :( Not only do I have to get SC4 working somewhat normally again, but I'll also be travelling the rest of summer. I can say that when I return, I will have something I've never done before. Consider this inactive, if not over. Until I return, later dudes.
