Title: How do I organize railroad lines??
Post by: pkwild on April 12, 2009, 09:09:20 AM
Can railroad tracks go at right angles like roads, or do they need diagonals.....if diagonals, how do I create one?  How do the puzzle pieces work??

I an new at this, and can't seem to get the tracks laid down correctly....any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Pamela

Pamela- grit your teeth and post some screenies of what you are having trouble with.  I know that it's kind of painful to put something that is not working out on public display, but that would let us best help you.  Each picture is worth 1,000 words, etc, etc.

As for puzzle pieces, I found that, until you get used to working with them, it's almost always best to plop the puzzle piece first, then connect stuff to it.  If it plops in the wrong orientation, use the [ home ] and [ end ] keys to rotate it.  If it's just in the wrong place, bulldoze it (that implies, by the way, that you should be learning how to use puzzle pieces in an area that is pretty much undeveloped, so you are not taking out large swaths of stuff when things don't work out).

I've bookmarked this thread, so after you post I'll try to get right back with anything I would have to offer.  I'm sure others will help, as well.

OK, I'm off to take photos......however, you didn't answer my question about tracks at right angles???

OK.  Here's a screenshot of my problem.  The freight yard on the right side, just above the industrial area, is connected to an east/west line.  The passenger station in the bottom left corner is attached to a north/south line.  I am developing cities to the east (right) and want passenger trains to go that direction as well.  Will the trains from N/S cross over to the E/W tracks??

We can't see the pic if it's still on your harddrive. You have to upload it somewhere, i. e. ImageShack or Photobucket.

Also, you won't find any tracks that bend at right angles - this is highly unrealistic. The GLR tracks in the NAM do, but this was done mainly due to space constrictions in a dense urban environments. For rail lines, David created a set of wide radius curves that look a lot more realistic than the Maxis rail curves.

OK.  Got the pic to show up.  I get the right angle problem...didn't think it would work.....and I think I need to make one track go over the other with a rail-over-rail piece....right.  Otherwise, I am going to have some big crashes....................

I have tried plopping the curve pieces, but can't get the track to link up with it.  Any help there??

The trains will stop for each other at junctions. For realism, an overpass for one of the two crossing tracks is recommended if they are carrying a lot of traffic. The only times trains will crash in the game is if you reduce the rail maintenance funding or you hit another train in UDI Mode. Reducing rail maintenance funding has a 100% of causing a derailment.

Hi Pamela,

as far as I know trains won't turn left or rigth at a crossing like that shown in your picture. You need to drag a diagonal railroad from the N/S to the E/W rail line: just select the normal (draggable) rail menue item and start to drag a diagonal rail between the crossing lines. You will soon see the rail to connect the two crossing lines with little curves (see the schemata below - sorry haven't SC4 available at the moment). You will need to do so in each direction you want the trains to turn.

      N/S-Line
       II
       II
     //II\\  Diagonal track
   //  II  \\
===============  E/W-Line
   \\  II  //
     \\II//
       II
       II

The curves contained in the puzzle pieces are just for creating a curve within a single line. To connect two different lines, you need to use the switch puzzle piece.

Hope I could make myself clear without having the possibility to post a picture ...

Thanks.  I will try it out and see if it works.
