Title: Maximum Region Size of SC4Terraformer v1.1
Post by: boom_box on April 14, 2009, 07:24:40 AM

hi there NHP...

I'll be making a region for SC4
in which I will use the whole region of Lanao del Norte in the Philippines.. in the island of Mindanao.. my hometown..  :)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanao_del_Norte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lanao_del_Norte)

lately.. I've been trying to make it using your NHP version of SC4Terraformer... config.bmp size is about 64x28..  primarily compose of large city tiles..
Only to find out.. this error message would appear...

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg162.imageshack.us%2Fimg162%2F9899%2Ferrorv.jpg&hash=cb1ae333f880566ef90e5865adcd88e9826b4d66)

It seems my 2GB RAM isn't enough to make my region..  ;D
or perhaps I'm going too overboard..  $%Grinno$%  :D
so what would be the recommended size for terraforming the region..? or
should I use the hardway... grayscale method..
IMO, which seems to be complicated for me because of elevation details in this region aren't that accurate..

Do you tried with large or small cities ?
Even with large city, it will be hard to get to that size

Maybe you can do more than one region instead of one big ?

yeah.. as typical size I use was mostly 16x16 config... but for me its quite small to replicate the area...  ;D

the reason I intended to make larger regions because I was inspired by this CJ in Simtropolis... a fellow Filipino of mine who replicate a resemblance of his hometown, Davao City..

I've just been experimenting with this exact thing over the past few days, just to see how far I could stretch it. ::)

My laptop that I've been using for the tests has 3GB of RAM in it.  I was able to get a region with a 64x64 config in easily, and I was able to get up to about 80x80, though Terraformer had some problems with that.  SC4Mapper could not open anything larger than 64x64.

I also did a test using a 128x32 config, which had the same number of large city tiles (256) as a 64x64.  That seemed to work fine as well, so generally speaking, it should be able to handle a 64x64.  I don't know how much of a difference 3GB vs. 2GB would make, though.

In case anyone is also wondering, the game itself seems to be able to take a 128x128 config (1024 large tiles), though anything larger tends to cause an instant CTD on attempting to load the region.  You'd need a lot of RAM in order to be able to get Terraformer to handle that, though.

Wel lately I have been working on large regions, my computer its only 2gb RAM, and yes it can't handle a larger region as like that. I think max you can get 50x50 approximate...

But if you want to recreate such a big area like that I suggest you to scale down the map, sometimes thats a better solution for big maps. If you dont know how to scale down I can help you if you wish.

BTW, im a NHP Collaborator, but somewhat out of the team, hope to go back soon...

heh alex, what are the chances of us talking about this the other day lol, i was playing with an attempt at a 112x96 region but in the end had to break it into three equal parts of 40x56 which the mapper and terraformer and game all had no problems with on my 1gb laptop...

I guess I should invest on more larger RAM nowadays... DDR2 RAM prices are going down lately...  :)
I just saw a 2 x 2GB DDR2 1066 Team Xtreme Dark CL6 RAM here prices down at roughly about $58 (Php 2,750)

anyway, I'll be testing with smaller config latter... perhaps 50x24...

That would be great... but data of elevation details in the area I choose seems to be not so accurate... especially details on small rivers.. hehe
And yet I'm still a newbie about scaling down accurate maps...  ;D
