SFBT-Project: Realistic Modular Container Terminals

Hello everybody,  :)
In this thread I want to show you the progress of a large projekt of the SFBT: Realistic Modular Container Terminals.
Like the name says this project is all about container terminals. I was always a big fan of large ports, and yes this time there are already some BATs of container cranes, straddle carriers and many other cranes or vehicles you'll find in modern cotainer terminals. But I think the variation and some things are still completly lacking, and in my opinion many things are too small and therefore off scale, espacially the containerships. So I batted some cranes, straddle carriers and ships but the Project is of course not finished, the BATs which are done so far, are just a part of the projekt more will follow soon  ;)

That's what I've done so far:

Here are some rubber tyred gantry cranes (RTGs). More variations of them will follow  ;) I've batted them last week:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Fb06350df7c5d1b1ea88a8a943a1e45c3.png&hash=be84c6ec3802c2b83f444b38c830fe7175641f69) (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2Ffc7c4750f0c1b6370579af056f4a74b3.png&hash=d3e8e021a531c7e896b78377a47510b873b8c6f6) (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F0cab83c6dfc63d8cc7cfedace14f6f4d.png&hash=49889cba0f9d676418cda5db694f982c1bd15494) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/63486)

As you can see here are some big container ships, so far I've got 4 variations but I think 2 or more will follow.  :)

here you can see a Reach staker, I batted a while ago, but I'm not completly happy with the result  &Thk/(

you can see here some typical straddle carriers, which you can find in many ports. There is a untextured render picture from 3dsmax and a gmax render picture from texrured variations  ;)

That are just a few Containers, which just are added to jestarrs containers. I hope jestarrs does not mind if I add them to his prop family  ;D

Well I said there will be modular container terminals but this time I have no lots because there too many BATs lacking, yet . But I hope I can change that next time  ;)

Criticism ans suggestions are always welcome  :)

Edit: Please Note that my english not the best, but I hope everything is understandable  &mmm

Gantry cranes are perfect.
Container ships - look very good, more variations would be nice, including an unloaded ship.
The large container crane - we will see, but the Bremerhaven - based version a few pictures below is excellent, if you would like to make a second one, it should be more different. A general comment to all cranes - make bright lights for them!  :)
The reach stacker looks very good, I don't know what you don't like in it  ;)
Straddle carriers - the next perfect stuff. I'm curious how all these props will look at the closest zoom  ;)
Typical cranes - the presented version is good, but you are right, there are a lot of them in ports around the world, they are often bigger and they have longer arm. It gives very characteristic touch to the typical seaport skyline.
Trucks: look good, more diversity would be nice (not containers, but trucks).

Anyway, excellent stuff!  &apls &apls &apls
It will be very important to design lots thoughtfully, to make the whole set as flexible and diversified as possible.

Did I just see a huge traffic jam there? :D

Anyway, your creations are very good... but you may want to ensure that your set is interoperable with BSC so that I can use both sets in harmony =)

@Sam Johnson: I'm sure that your seaport set will be very good!

1. What do I think about typical cranes?

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg23.imageshack.us%2Fimg23%2F2512%2Ffree7990655.jpg&hash=b6d62c4080d6368056fbd82077d1305e645b027b)

They are used rather in cargo areas, where not only containers are loaded - but it would be great to have them too!

2. Do you want to make something really new? Think about the concrete texture to cover roads in the seaport area! Neither streets (especially if somebody uses the sidewalk mod in the city) nor roads don't harmonize well with large concrete seaport and other industrial areas. What I suggest is an overhanging lot to cover a stretch of road  ;)

I was already thinking about it, according to the airport improvement. How about new SAM texture set - the road markings just painted on the concrete tile? If the base texture will be chosen carefully (my type is a original maxis concrete texture used as apron by Voltaire), it would fit industrial / seaport / airport areas :).

@Pat: thanks  :)

@k808j: thank you, too

@ennedi and Gwail : I agree that  cranes like them are really lacking in Sc4 and of course I don't bat them for the container terminals they are rather for the break bulk ports, If I have the time I could start to bat some more of them  ;) The idea with the streets in the port or industrial area sounds really good, but you should know I have not so much experience with photoshop but it's worth a try I think. If I would do those textures I'd need some help with the modding, because I never did any transit modding like this.

Well at this moment there's no progress, because I just came from school a while ago.

Wonderful work on your container terminal props Sam! I don't say this often, but your props are nicer then my container stuff :D  Especially the RTG's are great and very well detailed.
I can't imagine all the time and effort you must have put in this project. I'm really looking forward to the day you upload this  ;)

Sam, this is great work!
I am really curious what you are coming up with.
We now have, as far as I know:
- PEG's container port and related stuff
- Somy's containerport (one lot!)
- Soulstealer's stuff for seaports, very flexible
- Some assorted things like containerstacks etc. Didn't Bixel make one upload at STEX?
- Tag_One's work in progress
- Your work in progress
There are also some lots by BarbyW, but I think they are too full of props and not flexible enough.

All these lots will make for really varied ports.

@:Tag_one: Thank you, I really like your Port props, too  :) I started this project before you realeaed you container terminal props. Maybe I can adjust everything so, that our props fit well together  ;)

@.FrankU: Thank you, too. Well I know there are many port sets available this time, but from your list are in my opinien only 2 (uncounted mine) sets realistic: The port stuff with yomans crane props on soulstealers lots, and tag_ones stuff in Progress.

Over the weekend I was busy with one of my cranes, I think the modelling is done so far. I'll no go one with the texturing  ;)

You got something big going on here, keep it up! Maybe you could add a crane for loading containers onto trains, like this: link (http://kartor.eniro.se/query?mop=aq&mapstate=1%3B11.85457%3B57.69218%3Bo%3B11.85100%3B57.69427%3B11.85743%3B57.69050%3B880%3B771%3B0%3B1&what=map_adr&geo_area=Skandiahamnen%2C%20G%D6TEBORG&stq=0&pis=0). If you intend to make cranes that can load the largest ships remember that the largest Super Post-Panamax cranes have an outrach of over 60 meters. Have you thought about modelling the largest container ships like Emma Maersk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_Maersk) or MSC Daniela (http://gcaptain.com/maritime/blog/interesting-ship-msc-daniela/)?

Thanks for the comments  :)

@allan_kuan: Mh I don't think that the arm is too short I testet the length of that arm at one of my ships, maybe the arm at the container terminal side is too long  ;D

@antn: Well I thought about to bat those large container ships but I think those will be too big for the sc4 scale, my ships are based on the design of in RL much larger ships, especially in the wideness. And please notice that the Emma Maersk would be in sc4 25tiles long and 3,5 tiles wide, I don't think that many people would build ports which have a size like that, We have to come to an compromise between realism and usability, I think  ;) The arm of the current crane is ~60m long and this is by comparision to other cranes a common sized crane

A crane for loading onto trains is of course in the planning  ;)

I think as the day progress I can show some progress at the crane  :)

@allan_kuan1992: I did yesterday some more coloar variations of the container crane which is based on the design of the cranes in bremerhaven, in near future I will do some colour variations of the last crane, and today I plan to start another crane, which has a design, what can be found all over the world ;)

Well, I started many things the last days but just something, what I did yeserday is this time presentable :D
I reworked the nightlights of the "bremerhaven crane" and I did some colour variations of this crane:

I can only restate what so many others have said. These are wonderful bats. The modeling and texturing is very impressive. The folk at Maxis should be gratified if or when they come to SC4Devotion and see that their game is alive and well because of the efforts of people like you.

Excellent nightlights! They were missing in all previous BATs of that type, now seaports will look even more realistic!
Fantastic models and texturing  &apls

Great and colorful nightlights! I especially like the last color variation of the crane, it looks really cool
Hows work progressing on the other crane?

SamJohnson,

Your cranes look fantastic in any colour you presented.
So I really would use them in any colour you decide, but I have one remark:
PEG's cranes are blue, Yoman's cranes are blue, Tag_One's are grey (as far as I know), so I ask you to make yours red or orange, just for the sake of variation.
But thanks anyway. Lots of claps:  &apls  &apls  &apls

I have to agree with FrankU. A little variation won't hurt.

Yes... a little variation won't hurt. ::)

Just that there are many variations in container crane design. $%Grinno$%

For example, our cranes in Vancouver are special in that they were designed to squeeze under the Lions Gate Bridge:
http://www.tsi.bc.ca/gallery/album07/CranesByMorley_006

(text and image clipped as the link has suddenly fallen silent)

Another thing I want to mention is that Bremerhaven's cranes are a little unique in having that middle "block" sitting at the centre of the crane... they also seem to have a much smaller counterweight than other cranes I've seen.

However, the designs are similar enough that only one variant of design (along with a mix of colours) would probably suffice at the moment. The suggestion for more crane designs is of course entirely dependent on your schedule...

Now, back to your current cranes... I haven't really seen the nights on container cranes but the ones you made are quite excellent in making it easy for operators to see =)  The colour schemes are also coming along well... I particularly like the orange one =O

There are a whole bunch of colour schemes that could be done. I would be quite satisfied if you worked on some all-colour designs like black, white, green, blue, red, and yellow. If you want to go further you can also do a few striped/patterned designs but that would be somewhat complicated to do given the number of designs that exist out there.

@io_bg: Thanks  :)

@jmyers2043: thanks, and a totally agree with you, maxis had'nt ever planned that SC4 would be today still alive  ;)

@Ennedi:Thank you , but in my opininion not in all previous container crane BATs the nightlights were missing the nightlights at tag_ones cranes are nice, to , I think ;)

@art128: Thanks :)

@ShadeSlayer: Thanks, too

@FrankU: Thanks, but I'm not sure if you've understand that every colour I have made or will make is going to be available in the final Port Set ;)

@allan_kuan1992: Yes, I agreed there are many designs and of course I won'n be able to bat every design that just would be too much :D  To your pictures yesterday I started a crane which will have a similar design like these http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/0664a9b1f16659fd516b94f9ae1d0aa5.jpg (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/0664a9b1f16659fd516b94f9ae1d0aa5.jpg) cranes here in Hamburg so far I know are cranes with a similar design like these common all over the world. Colour Variations won't be a big problem because I managed my textures so that I can change the colour just in a few of clicks ;)

Year sorry for my long abstinence here  &mmm

Year like Allen Kuan said I was very busy this time but at the latest in 4 weeks I'll have more time, because then my summer holidays begin  ;)

But this weekend I had some time to bat again  :)

I haven't finished a new crane but a big part of the modelling is done here's a picture of it:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F4c72fff3777d4fe941e05edc87cbcaf9.png&hash=021e21b6a5495930b0174f98ecade58e03a3a7f1)
Now I'll go on with the arm of the crane and the crane trolley  ;)

Criticism amd suggestions are always welcome  :)

Umm... photos of the actual cranes reveals that none of them have those stairs attached to the sides =O

A few other cranes with different specs do have the stairs though.

Title: Re: SFBT-Project: Realistic Modular Containerterminals
Post by: Sam Johnson on June 15, 2009, 06:21:29 AM
@allan Kuan: Yes, the cranes I have shown a few post ago have no stairs attached at the sides but I don't recreate them exactly, because they have some specifications which the most cranes with a similar design don't have. And I think it would be better to bat cranes which have a design what is ever-present. For example those cranes http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/1ddcf99292a3361dc6d83ee83500e06a.jpg (http://www.ld-host.de/uploads/images/1ddcf99292a3361dc6d83ee83500e06a.jpg) in Tacoma have a very similar design but those have the stairs ;) But I just recognized something the stairs on my crane are a bit out of place , I'll cahnge that :D

@iamgoingtoeatyou: Thank you :) Mh, yes you are right ist a bit short, Im going to change that.

At this moment there's no prgress here because I just came from school a while ago  ;)

I agree with Pat - the crane looks great!
Stairs are good for me, they contain very small details and they could look worse if they would be smaller.

Sam,

I am sure that real crane engineers will know a lot about the details and probably you will shave screwed up some of them, but I think the crane looks very realistic and detailed and I definitely feel that it will be able to unload Jeronij's and PEG's containerships!
At least, I will give them the opportunity as soon as you have finished and uploaded the stuff.

I know It's not very much progress.. but the modelling of the arm is almost done:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F553ddf08672bdcb9510f413e4998e9ec.png&hash=172c43cdf01767424c7589bc6e03134847fea3e7) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/73607)

I still have to do the crab, the textures and the nightlighting...

Criticism is always welcome  :)

I just added the crane trolley and I battet a version with the arm up and I threw some textures on it just for test they aren't final ;)

Sorry but I don`t have any update here, even more bad news  :(

Sorry guys

I was completly shocked when my hard drive was crashing, but I had a backup of the latest Bats so only two important things are missing, the straddle carriers an the based on the design of bremerhavens container cranes crane. But yesterday and today I was busy to bat some new straddle carriers and here`s the current result:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg106.imageshack.us%2Fimg106%2F8093%2Fvancarrierreset.th.png&hash=a64d526f349a6e710c80f96cd221cf307cb0b259) (http://img106.imageshack.us/i/vancarrierreset.png/)

I hope you like them,too  :)

I'm will bat another big container crane for the now missing bremerhaven container crane, but I'm not sure which crane design I should choose. Are there any suggestions ? :)

Wow... that was really fast... and I like the colours and nightlighting on the cranes as well =)

as for cranes... want to do those ZPMC cranes sitting in my hometown? xD (I did upload one image of the "special" Vancouver harbour cranes... there's another image here (http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=http://image62.webshots.com/62/3/31/33/2898331330066181719fpffBI_fs.jpg&imgrefurl=http://travel.webshots.com/photo/2898331330066181719fpffBI&usg=__uStkS3LGDd325nOgqHP-T6Cyhic=&h=1800&w=2400&sz=551&hl=en&start=58&um=1&tbnid=7LEFRSxJWpSeOM:&tbnh=113&tbnw=150&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dvanterm%26ndsp%3D21%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26start%3D42%26um%3D1) and there's a more generic version used in Deltaport here (http://www.tsi.bc.ca/gallery/album05/ZPMC_Crane_Ship_028).)

There's another crane design from another company (Doosan, South Korea) that's being used at a different dock in Vancouver... They may not be the best images but I hope it gives an idea.

@jmdude: Yes, there will be diagonal version available: per colour one version which is straight, one which is 45 degrees diagonal, and 2 versions which are rotatet to 22,5 degrees. I think with that you should get along to let it look a bit more realistic ;)

Verskoon my? Hierdie Afrikaan kan jou verseker dat die helfde van Afrika nie in krotte woon nie. ;)

Dalk sal dit beter wees as jy daardie verwysing verwyder... nie noodwendig die krot deel as "shady shack" nie, dit is dit wel, maar eerder die verwysing na Afrika. Bloot omdat ek nie sulke Afro-pessimistiese verwysings waardeer nie.

I speak Dutch, not Afrikaans, and thus can't understand what you're saying. And yes, I exaggerated when I said half of Africa lives in schacks, though some do, though it would be better if I said that in the bigger African cities half or more lives in shacks.
