Title: Help: Sunken highway on/off ramps & Buddybud's Rural Highway Walls
Post by: joeltp85 on July 07, 2009, 07:01:08 PM
Hi guys. I hope this is the right forum for this.

I'm pretty new to SC4, and recently I've been experimenting with sunken highways. Anyway, I'm having a little bit of an "image" problem trying to get Buddybud's "Sunken Rural Highway Wall" sections to show up properly with sunken highway on/off ramps. Here's a couple of pictures of what I'm talking about:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi12.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa207%2Fjoeltp85%2FNewCity-Apr18161247016357-1.png&hash=41b07426771d34a8e1142e1b14e049b82a447408)

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi12.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa207%2Fjoeltp85%2FNewCity-Apr18161247016383.png&hash=121aa9b01f75794f0a55104fc916fcc1f917fecb)

I tried uninstalling the Jagged Diagonal Edges mod to see if that was the problem, but as you can see it didn't prevent the green blotches from sticking through the lot. Any idea as to what is causing this and how I can fix it? Thanks.

Also, is there a way of building el train/monorail bridges over sunken highways without them looking like this:

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi12.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa207%2Fjoeltp85%2FNewCity-Apr18161247016874.png&hash=bc15bf4c430eb7c8cd97803880ad047446e1163b)

Not exactly the most realistic look...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Joel

How deep are you making the highways? Most items are set up for a 15 meter depth.

Also, the dragable networks can not cross the highways at the same level all the way, you have to use some puzzle pieces.

For sunken highways @ 15m the NAM has 'High Elevated' pieces that are 30m that allow for a straight crossing for elevated networks.

I'm using smoncrie's Hole Digging Lots, so it should be 15m. I pretty much did what is shown here: http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=146&threadid=105800&enterthread=y Yet instead of getting this at the end of the process:

...I'm getting this:

Seems to me I tried using the high elevated pieces for this before and I couldn't get it to work, but maybe I just wasn't doing it right. I'll try messing around with it again. :D

Edit: I tried the elevated pieces again and I got it to work. :) Maybe I couldn't get it to work before because I had an older version of NAM. Or maybe I just don't know what I'm doing at all (entirely possible :D). Thanks, guys.

Now if I could just get the Buddybud's rural highway on/ff ramp pieces to work...

Most likely, the models LODs are to close to the ground then. I seem to recall having the same problem, and I decided to not use them. Maybe someone else can shed more light on the problem.

For that particular wall set, the trench the highway is in needs to be 14 meters deep instead of the usual 15 meters. Buddybud designed that set so the overpasses would be slightly arched when crossing the highway.

The double height puzzle pieces are designed for 15 meter deep trenches, so the overpasses may be slightly arched if you run them over the top of a 14 meter deep trench.

joeltp85...

From your pictures, it looks like you've used the Sunken Highway hole digger lot. That particular lot only 'digs' a 12m trench. That is why half of the wall is 'buried'. You should select either the regular hole digger lot for 15m or the Road hole digger lot for 14m (Not all the lots create the same depth - read the small print for each menu item and it will tell you the depth).

As Swamper mentioned, Buddybud created his walls for 14m and will produce the hump effect on overpasses. If you use 15m, the hump won't be there, but there will be a slight texture 'bleed through' on the highway ramps.

Here's an example made at 12m... Looks like yours...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi448.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fqq206%2FCaptCity%2F12mTrench.jpg&hash=f2113b7cb9b38d7a88eb73693c4480a9f302bbe5)

Here's one at 14m... Notice the slight hump effect in the overpass.

And here's one at 15m... Notice the texture bleed-through at the bottom of the ramps.

Hope some of this helps...

Ok, I tried it out at 14m and it looks awesome. So I guess I just had a depth problem. Which also explains why you guys were getting your road overpasses more or less level and why mine had big humps in them. It all makes sense now. $%Grinno$%

Next time I'll be a little more careful to read the fine print so I don't get stuck like this again. Thanks everyone for the help, I really appreciate it.

I knew someone would have the answer. I'll have to re-download the set now :)
