Title: Sierra Ajo
Post by: chadly on July 30, 2009, 12:10:40 PM

This is my first City Journal of Sierra Ajo, a sprawling desert metropolis located in southwest Texas. Sierra Ajo has been quickly growing as the rest of Texas has, it was founded as a township in 1948, and granted city status only 5 years later. Now in the twenty first centuary it has become a large griddy(for the most part) traffic nightmare of a city with dozens of large suburbs around it. The city itself is now nearing a population of 290,000 sims, while the metro area is nearing 800,000. The city's growth is due to the river, its proximity to mexico and the gulf of mexico, the rail lines(now almost completly gone), and the two interstates that run through the center of downtown.

Now that we had a brief history update, I will be giving you a few photo's to get this city journal going :)

   Update 1: The Newbury's Journey.

John Newbury, His wife Sarah, and their 2 children have recently become homeless due to John loosing his job at a textile factory in El Paso. They got in their car and drove on the interstate for hours, aimless and hopeless. It was dinner time and they only had 19 dollars left in their pockets, the sun was beginning to go down. Nothing was in sight.

  Then they saw a sign...

  Sierra Ajo Pitstop, next right.

John decided that they would stop there to get something to eat and figure it out from there, as everyone was asleep in the car. As he got closer to the pit stop he passed the outer farms and open land. Then he hit traffic and could see suburbs in the distance.

John Drove for about 45 minutes through all of those suburbs to find more suburbs. He drove along the interstate some more, and finally he hit the pitstop. Him and his family ate off of the Mcdonald's Dollar Menu and then slept in their car.

Then the next morning John used his last quarter on the local paper...

Very good start! Your artistic pictures are amazing, and you capture the Texan desert feel perfectly. The story is a bit depressing so far...hope it gets better! John needs to get a job!

Update 2

In the newspaper he bought, John looked for the want ads section. This particular paper only had an ad for the local job placement agency. So John walked there, seeing as it was only a mile away and his family was still sleeping in the car.

After a long hour or so of surveys and resume related things, they set John up with 3 interviews for tommorow afternoon.

(Find out in the next update, which job he takes!)

Janitor at a South Sierra Middle School...

A Contruction worker in the downtown area...

Then once he got back his wife told him that they needed to start looking for a temporary place to live. "We can't live in the car forever"

Their first choice was this shack in the slums.

Come back to see if things begin to look up for the Newbury's in Update 3!

Update 3

After John went to all three interviews he went to his local church to pray that he gets a job so he can afford to pay the rent on his 1 bedroom 1 bathroom hell whole on the east side.

Meanwhile, School was starting soon so Sarah and their two kids walked to the nearby schools, Mccain Elementary and Reagan Secondary. This is a very Republican Area as you can tell...

It was from Kohl's, they had decided to hire him for minimum wage.
