Hi guys,
i just got into modding after almost giving up on sim city due to my problem with the commute time abandonment. When i found the nam i thought my problems were solved. it helped a little but i am still having huge problems. i've tried all the traffic simulators in the Nam and none have helped much. Does anyone know of a mod that radically increases the distance sims are willing to commute? i would really appreciate it.
You said you've tried all the traffic simulators, but I use Simulator Z and have no commute time abandonment issues at all. The commute time in my city of 850,000 is around 2 minutes. If you're using an existing city and changing traffic simulators, it takes at least 5 game years to see any difference in traffic patterns. Try making a new city from scratch to really see any difference. I used to also suffer from the abandonment issue, until Simulator Z.
I just wanted to add to make sure that you do not have more than one installed at a time and if you are using the park and ride to make sure you have the parking and mass transportation taken care of.
Which zot are your buildings displaying, the briefcase or the car? It might be a sign that you just need to add more jobs to meet your residential demand.

I have a feeling you either have a graph problem or are reading your commute graph improperly. A 2 minute commute time would imply all transport is pretty much pedestrian and lots are almost immediately adjacent to each other. Either that or I'd say you've picked a very unrealistic commute model.. ;)
WRT commute times generally, I've not done strict experiments, but commute time relates VERY STRONGLY to the % of your population that commutes OUT OF your city. If you want very low commute times, supply R,C and I in appropriate mixes and densities in close proximity. If you have commute times of about 20 minutes, you probably have a well designed city. Of course you may tolerate longer commute times if you're trying to do something specific like keep only HIGH WEALTH on say a small tile, and supplying the labor from adjacent tiles.
There are several versions of the commute time graph out with different scalings, so you have to be cautious (hah..well its not like life or death :) ) in comparing commute times.
thanks for the advice
just to answer a few questions
-there's no zot, the wealth of the building drops and it deteriorates
-no i'm not running more that one
-i just started a new city and the problem was showing up when i reached 8000 sims. i've got buses and everything
hey, just to let you guys know, i re-downloaded nam and used simulator z. Game works amazing now ;D. Go figure. Thanks for all your help!
