Title: praiodan's workbench / general discussion
Post by: praiodan on December 16, 2006, 10:20:58 AM
Hey, this is where I will showcase you my work!
Please mind the shavings and splinters on the ground  :D

My current project:
Slottet, the royal palace in Oslo:

excellent! If i can give one advice, chose a better potted plant, something like a topiary maybe...

And if i may suggest, i see a wonderfull garden to the rear.. something like what i did with my chateau de sceaux, or maybe a plaza with an important central piece, like a kiosk or a huge fountain..

If you need any help or ideas, don't hesitate one second to send me a PM. I know some good ways to make good quality small props, plants-flower gardens , statues and water surfaces. I also have an excellent tutorial for the roofs Porkie does for his Paris BATs. But I have to ask him first if he wants me to publish it...

If i can give one advice
I always appreciate your advices :) You are right about the plant, I have a look for a better one.

And about the rear:
there will be some beds, trees and a fence. I have only one pic for that I can work from, this is a bit less on the one hand, on the other hand it leaves some creative margin.
I'm not sure though if I will model these things (the fence is the part I most probably gonna model a prop for), maybe most of that stuff can be done with already existing props and textures. But it seems that I have to make a testrender to get certainty if I can use existing stuff or if I have to model the stuff.

Also, this tutorial about roofs makes me curious! Hopefully Porkie agrees ;)

Hi Praiodan, may I suggest you to use Google Earth to try to obtain a vertical look over those gardens ?¿. Maybe this helps to have a better idea  ::)

here's one, I got it for you, but it isn't good enough to copy. Imagine that court might be necessary... you could also integrate the props in the main model (as  i did with my university of athens and the courts)..

I already did, unfortuatly (as visible on the screen swi posted), there's a big, ugly cloud over it, so it's not very clear to see.

My two cents on the gardens (and I LOVE the model Praiodan!)...  I'm a lot builder and I use the props from creations such as the chateau de sceaux on various other lots that grace my cities.  So if it WOULD be possible to create the garden as separate props certain people (such as myself) would appreciate this and use them in other creations.

That said, as always, I'm not about to tell someone how to create their own works of art.  I can give feedback and a bit of constructive criticism, but who am I to tell someone that their creation (which I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to even BEGIN to create!) needs changes, etc, etc?

Anyway, keep up the great work, I'm glad to see you're still taking on projects that are quite large and complicated... they really bring the game to a new level!!

I always appreciate your advices :) You are right about the plant, I have a look for a better one.

You would be better off just making basic shaped (tapered cylinder, box) for these, as the detail will disappear ingame...just texture the bush with a grassy type varied texture.  The effect would be the same but the polycount and render time would be less.

I saw that pic too on google maps....all of the area around it is nice and clear, it would figure that the one cloud in the sky would be over the building you are trying to see.
Well  you know what I think of this beauty....I can't wait to place it in one of my cities!

Thanks for all the comments  :)

Here's a sneak peak of what I'm up next. Slottet is currently driving me nuts as I only have the nightlights to do, but it seems to be impossible on my slow comp. No textures, no depper detail, just some basic modelling:

More will follow the next days  ;)

 &apls Great work Praiodan !!
The roof texture is marvellous and the walls are very nice too, not too clean!

I would reccomend not to go at reat length with the garden in the back or a front plaza. There are great garden lots and plaza's available on Stex, Plex and here and a smaller sized base would allow a more versatile fit in the various cities of the players. Some might want to use it for residential purpose (just in the story line) or as a palace or as a museum. A bigger bas with part garden / plaza, will make this materpiece only elligible as a palace and that would be a shame.

On the other hand, it's your project, have fun!

Hey this will be a W2W? I just realised! Well it will be an excellent object! Did you use the BSC standards for the W2W buildings? there is a thread on the official BSC site about it... Are you oging to put a tiled roof or you will do a "toit-terrasse" (Le Corbusier's favorite!) with plants and everything...  ;)

I may have a nice glass texture if you want to experiment once...

Le Corbusier's Toit-Terrasse at Marseille/France ("Unité d'habitation de Marseille"): Click here (http://www.map.archi.fr/dpea/rubrique2/supportlivio/TerraceCorbu/description/corbudescr.html)

It is actualy an accessible roof, on which you find services that you usualy find on the ground (swimming pool, park/garden, school/kidengarden, restaurant, solarium etc...)

Wow, no posting here for one year and a half  :D

Have been working on a smaller project lately... inspired by the KoelnTriangle Complex in Cologne... Also planning a version with a larger base, like in reality.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Ff46400a7cd6f65699b7473595b6cf24e.jpg&hash=0cf872cfedbe7cbc743fe9d5d8be3f219099554e) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/f46400a7cd6f65699b7473595b6cf24e.jpg)

Still got to work on some textures (espacially the stairs) and nightlights are also still to come.

Though it was not my idea (always without when it comes to naming actually), JMyers had the spiffy idea to call it, or the company owning the tower, iLARs Inc., so I guess it will be something like iLARs Inc. Headquarters or so  ;D

As I used the RL dimensions of the LVR building, it will be at least 8x4  :)

That looks great, will the LVR Building have a custom LOD, so that props can be placed inside the 'patio' of it?

Long time, no see, eh?
After a long break, I've taken up BAT activity in the past few weeks again and I thought it might be appropiate, to tell you of the things that might be to come for you...  ;)

First of all...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2F13480447d3ab3fbfe2d429e7429f3d70.jpg&hash=1aff4377999d87da5d2bbfa173c28e924c2ec73b) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/13480447d3ab3fbfe2d429e7429f3d70.jpg)  (https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fthumbnails%2Fba095cb362b18a5aabb7d4e1fd840e0b.jpg&hash=84d9e2def2f70a4c7be1669e5902a3a8b597c91a) (http://www.ld-host.de/show/ba095cb362b18a5aabb7d4e1fd840e0b.jpg)
As you (hopefully!  :D ) notice: The Semperoper from Dresden. The model is pretty old actually and has mostly been created by curby, who also crafted the Frauenkirche from Dresden. He gave me the unfinished gmax-model when he quitted anything SimCity related for me to finish and I thought it was about time to give it ago. Added some details and had a major overhaul on the textures. Many many thanks go to callagrafx, who helped out on the nightlights and the rendering, as my computer was too slow to handle it anymore! And also thanks to Andreas for giving this Baby a try concerning the Lot (it's not the final Lot yet, though).  :)

Furthermore... As I've been into Bauhaus stuff lately a lot, I began tinkering with its kind of architecture in particular. So I had a go on Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. Erdmoebel made a recreation of it, many, many years ago, but I never liked it too much. Pretty underscaled, badly textured and rather heavy, so I just had to do it. ;D

(Lot is not finished yet)

Hope you like them. :)

Thanks, simbourgeois! And so you have some room for your culture loving simcitizens, I've began working on some more of Ludwig Mies van der Rohes creations. This time it's the Geschossbau from the Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart.

Not textured yet and the roof is bare still. Also thinking about some variations considering the number of storeys and the length. ;)

Guess this is some kind of a comeback. Started working on this baby like three years ago already, had to take a break from it for most of the time though, cause my old computer couldn't handle it any more. Have a new one now, and so I finally came to continue working on the Staatsbibliothek found Unter den Linden in Berlin. A lot is done, a lot is still to do... Nevertheless, here's a preview for you.

Thank you all for your kind words and the warm welcome!

@Debussyman
Yeah, I know, the renderer doesn't do any justice to this model right now, but I haven't managed yet to rearrange that (also because I got a little rusty tweaking things like that). What would you recommend? Scanline renderer with Catmull-Rom filter activated? Right now it's merely default mental ray.

@kelis
Gotta say, I started the Staatsbibliothek as a contribution to peterychristi's 1920's Berlin recreation in first place.

Thanks a lot, vortext and bap! I hope I won't disappoint your hopes for more stuff to come.  :D

Been progressing a bit: Created new materials for the roofs, the bricks in the curts and the glasses, as well as began to start with some minor detailing, like creating the ornamental vases, the balustrades ontop of the cupola, the balcony way, etc.

More detailing on the roofs, reworking the attic, adding statues, create a new stoneworks material and of course nightlights are to follow...

@FrankU
Thank you!  :)

@kelis
Thank you! Well, I've been already pondering a lot about what to model next and I have to say: I don't know yet. Of course, there's a couple of things that really attract me: The Preussischer Landtag (former lower house of Prussia, nowadays the Abgeordnetenhaus, the house of representatives of the city state of Berlin), possibly including the connection to the Preussisches Herrenhaus (Prussian's house of lords, nowadays the Bundesrat) for instance. Another option would be, living in Lichterfelde myself, creating some of the more or less elegant (mostly residential) suburban architecture of Berlin. I could also imagine to continue working on my former Bauhaus project, too. And this is not even half of what comes to my mind pretty spontaneously.
Yet, I have another 2-3 models in stock, that I could finish first (I don't like having to much stuff started and then having it unfinished ::) ), one of them being the Geschossbau from the Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart. It's almost finished, all that's left is the nightlights actually.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ld-host.de%2Fuploads%2Fimages%2F6143343f7e678d62a4aacaebc4320a88.png&hash=0ef4be6d5bf1f5f833e90a6290adf7dcecb9486f)

@peterycristi
You really better do, considering all the pain the Stabi caused my brain and my computers.  :P :D

Just FYI, if you want to save some space in a city for the Staatsbibliothek already, it will probably take like 8x13 squares (minimum).

Well, too much time too fast gone by, but three years after the last update I have in fact finished the Staatsbibliothek. I spare you the tedious story of frustration, struggles and many many errors I ran into, that paves the labyrinthine road I had to take to render it and which is also the reason I call it "finished", despite of quite a couple of deficiencies the model still has. But I grew too tired of handling this model for more optimization processes and therefore I apologise in advance for never ever wanting to render this monster again. Instead, I hope some of you will still be able to enjoy it. But enough of talking, here are two pictures. (Please ignore the Lot for now, it's still work in progress)

Haha so true. It was bugging me now for so long and I kinda felt remorse, since this actually started as a contribution to peterycristi's 1920s Berlin project. So in fact it is quite a relief for me.  :)

Quote from: vester... and what a comeback.
And it feels very good! Although I currently am not able to actually play the game (master thesis eats all the possible time...) and model a lot. Let's hope motivation won't leave me until end of July, when I will submit the thesis and I will be free after a..  $%Grinno$%

I tried to adjust the UVW maps so the repeating will not be that obvious. It seems I failed that goal.  $%Grinno$% But as I said, I won't touch it again, so you'll have to cope with it.  :P

Nevermind, I haven't been around in this thread for years either  :D

Trying to keep the rocks rolling I now also finished the Weissenhofsiedlung Geschossbau and gave the Lotting a go. For now I think this will come in the flavors 5x1 R$ and 6x2 R$$. Since this building also served as a child clinic I also think about having a ploppable Lot as a clinic.

Thank you Brian.  :)

Over the easter holidays I didn't find any eggs, but some other very old models of mine I now rendered. Just to give you a little context about just how old they are: I created these back in 2006 or 2007. That's in fact so long ago, they've been created in an era when I still was only using gmax instead of 3dsmax.  ::) Therefore I'd (once again) like to excuse for lousy model quality, so it'll be just another take it or leave it release.  &Thk/(

These are also some of the very few buildings of mine that have no RL equivalent, although they are very loosely inspired by some planned (then canceled and now resurrected) residential developement in the green and waterish north-west of Berlin, the so-called Wasserstadt Spandau. Therefore I'll name them the Spandau Condos.

This way you can click on it to see the full size, but stay on sc4d:
(for some reason the first one is acting up)

Not sure if you have done it, but add a gradient to your textures. (most use darker: at the bottom).

Thanks vester!
I re-implemented the pictures following your advice, thanks. I was simply copy&pasting the thumbnail URLs the host provided me.  ;)

The textures all have a slight gradient, but I quite intended it not to be too strong, since I already applied the textures well visible plaster and bricks for visual interest. And also, don't forget these actually are quite freshly built buildings, so they wouldn't have been exposed to atmospheric conditions for too long, resulting in stronger gradients and streaks.  :P

The gradient is not so much a result of weathering, but how lights work.

If you have a corner the two sides will make a slight shadow.
This is what in modeling is called Ambient occlusion.

Here is a scene with no colors, just a grey material:

You can easy see how the ground sort "shadow" for the light at ground level.

If you take a picture of a white building you will see the same effect.

I see, thank you vester for this example. Of course I know gascooker's tutorial, but I didn't took the physical implications of the light and shadows into full consideration. But as I already said, there in fact is a slight gradient applied to the buildings' textures. It's not too visible on closest zooms, but will be recognizeable at farther zooms.  :)

3 years are indeed a lot of time, but well, c'est la vie. It often happens and it's hard to come back, especially if you still can see some minor or major issues to correction, so congratulations for the power to manage to take it back and finally publish. Especially when the Model itself look great

I also like the Weissenhofsiedlung, looks nice and simple :) Does it fit into w2ws?

Hi kbienu7,

The whole idea behind the Weissenhofsiedlung in Stuttgart is show an alternative to building in W2W areas. The housing is purposely designed to be stand alone in the green and open space. So it would be a kind of insult to the original architects to put these into W2W blocks.
On the other hand: it's your game and you can do what you want.

Thank you, kbieniu7.

Taking in consideration what Frank says, well: Yes, from a pure geometric point of view, the final Geschossbau will fit into W2W areas. It wouldn't have in first place, but I intentionally scaled it according to the game grid so you are free to choose. Making it fit into W2W blocks doesn't necessarily mean it will only fit these surroundings. The length difference, between W2W scaled and RL building, is 4 meters, so hardly recognizeable at all anyway.

While you are right on the green open space thingey, let's not forget this is all but a game. In now 13 or 14 years I have seen many possible (unintentional) insults towards RL architects and their concepts and I might certainly have commited a couple of them myself ( $%Grinno$% ) I took the decision that I regarded best fit to give players the choice to play the game they like it best; of either employ the Geschossbau in W2W surrounds or open spaces or even both.  And for those who don't like my crappy Lotting, anyone's free to give it ago themselves, asap it is published.  ;D

Although this building of course would fit as a museum, as it is in RL, I like the idea of the police station for a plopable Lot.
For the walls: Regarding the very clean state the facade is in in RL I think I already made it look too weathered and old.  :D I'll have another look into this.

They are set back very slightly, which is how I recognised it on the few pictures I have and also in Street View it seems only a few centimeters. I'll have a try on setting them back a little more and see what option will satisfy me more.  :)

My guess, they are set back with at least 10 cm if not 15 cm.

Even if they are not set back that much I would at least do it by 10 cm.
The shadows on the windows brings life and contrast to the model.

So how much sill do you have under windows ?

In Denmark in old times use 3 different kinds:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.fyens.dk%2F75%2F639775_606_0_0_177_1200_675_2.jpg&hash=593700058a77b2b8a30d2941d8b7475fc95fedec)
Brick on the side.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kuhlmann-hornbaek.dk%2Fimages%2Ffeb10%2520089.jpg&hash=ef37399ef194c62fdf2bd0851a5d929a5dbbeb55)
Black stone slates

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fandreasolesen.dk%2Fb40%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2011%2F11%2F47.jpg&hash=01a6cc739e1aa9c55b2c5f7a41374b0a0b38d8be)
Metal plates, most common of zinc.

The sill would add shadow lines under the windows:
Added a bit of shadow to the left part of the picture.

Now it's slowly getting embarrasing for me.  $%Grinno$% Apparently it's too few for the game.  ::) :D Sophienholm itself has very short sills (and so has the model):

Therefore no shadow under the sills yet. Here's a try on that:

In fact I merely elongated the sills and didn't change the their texture. But nevertheless, I like the result a lot better now.  ;) As I said, the years got my eyes rusty to watch out for these kind of small, yet important details and I constantly have to remind myself that the ingame effect of the modelling is a little more important than just the perfect sense for the real construction. (Although, ideally these parameters should match at best, but that's a goal hardly ever to meet). So thank you very much for your precious input today again.

I agree with vester when he says that sometimes you have to overdue details in order to see them in game.
If memory serves me right the smallest detail that can be shown in game is 0.1m but I usually make it 0.2m for a better visual impact.

The latest iteration looks far better &apls

Thank you very much Noah and Nick!

Just a short note to keep you up to date:
1. Work on the Staatsbibliothek is almost finished now, carlfatal helped me out with the Lot. I hope I'll be able to release this baby around the upcoming weekend!

2. I've created a little "end piece" for the Spandau Condos for left and right sites and compiled all the models so far. With four buildings (straight, corner, end left, end right) and five colourations there are all in all 20 models. I've created the single lots for each so far with building families but I still plan to build another couple of bigger (5x4 - 6x6) unicolored Lots with having the buildings arranged to complexes (as they would have been built in RL).

3. I've rendered Sophienholm and currently am busy creating a growable R$$$ Lot and as vinlabsc3k suggested, a police station lot. Lotting for the Geschossbau, too, still is in the works.

Being neat for smaller models and props, I have to say, for buildings I think HD renders are unnecessary, since they compromise the Z5 view. Although, I might have missed new developement there and this issue has been solved?
And as the Spandau Condos are gmax models, they can't be rendered HD I think, since this has always been a 3dsMax-only option. But again, I might be wrong as I'm still not perfectly up to date on the more recent developements.

Thank you very much for your kind words!

@ Dantes
I'm still working on a couple of Lots for the Spandau Condos and maybe, maybe on another surprise.

@ Simmer
As Arne pointed out, the Schloss Bellevue is of neoclassical style, it was built for Ferdinand of Prussia, the youngest brother of Friedrich II. Nowadays it is the seat of the Bundespraesident, the head of state of Germany. Fun fact: Since the last refurbishment of the palace around 2005, there is no living space anymore, as more offices were needed, so the Bundespraesident actually lives in a mansion in Dahlem (a lovely neighbourhood in the south-west of Berlin, just a couple of minutes away from my place) and has become a commuter across the city.  $%Grinno$%

@ Matt
What should I say? After having dealt with the Staatsbibliothek, nothing can shock me anymore!  $%Grinno$%

Currently I'm overly busy with working on my thesis (entering a critical phase now ... but I will hand it in at the end of July), so only very few progress here. In fact, I am still trying to better grasp Max 2014 and the render settings and how to adjust texture accordingly, this was a very rough first shot.

A question to those who are a little more familiar with the recent BAT version... Are there render setups you could recommend or is the preset just fine? I really have not the slightest idea about this technical stuff anymore.  :-[

Will take a look at my settings tomorrow. Been a while since I rendered any thing out.
Arthur could maybe be of some assistance as I got advice from him on setting it up.
He might have posted something about it as well.

Think there might be some problems with the gamma correction.
There were a fix posted somewhere for it.

BTW: Keep your copy of the installation files for 2014 safe, as with at least 2016 bat4max don't work.
Think it might be the same with 2015.

2nd BTW: I collected  series of youtube channels with Max tutorials. You can find it here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=17374.msg506491#msg506491).

It's looking good!

I'm using 2014 - with Simfoxes' bat4max.

First, as Arne suggested, get the gamma fix:
http://community.simtropolis.com/files/file/28998-bat4maxv5-3ds-max-2014-gamma-fix/

Then, these are the steps I take whenever I open a new scene:
1). Set the grids & snaps
2). Click 'let there be light' and set the sky +day
3). Then go to the rendering tab and select the render set up option
4). Once in the Render set up, I click on the Global Illumination tab and select the 'Skylight Illumination from Final Gather (FG)' radio button
5) Still within the Render set up tab, I then click on the renderer tab and select 'Classic Raytraced' from the dropdown box.
6) This is a crucial step - and it's thanks to art128 (see attached picture) and it involves dragging an instance of the MR Physical Sky and setting the ground colour to avoid blurred edges.
7) Whenever you click on the Maxis Nite or Dark Nite buttons, you need to repeat steps 4 & 5

Fun
::)

I'm using very old versions of both 3dsmax and bat4max, so I'm not sure if this is still relevant for your versions.  But if you have the background color appearing at the edges of the building, try this:  Customize->Preference Settings->Rendering->Don't Anitalias against background.  Checking the box eliminates the problem.
