Title: Greyscale Mapping
Post by: ecoba on November 29, 2009, 06:51:24 PM
Hello there!

I was wondering if anyone out there still makes greyscale maps to render the old-fashioned way. If anyone thinks they could make a good one, please respond here! I really am looking for a good quality map, and I think that if I can get one I will be able to progress in playing the way I like to.

The area that I am desiring the most at the moment is a peninsula in Norge (Norway) and the surrounding islands. This peninsula is the one from Sandness to Stavangar. This seems like it would be a really interesting area to build on, and I was hoping that someone might be able to do it. I have noticed one thing while looking at greyscale renders. Do they have elevation maximums? (Can Terraformer go higher?) If so then this peninsula would also be god because I wouldn't have to worry about not getting the maximum heights in. I am worried that the terrain also might not be as detailed for this area as if with a greyscale, if a mapper looks over this area and can give me some advice as to whether this would be a good greyscale area or not, it would be very appreciated.  :)

The ideal area I'm looking for is between Prestaberget, Forus, Dale one of those being the southern maximum, to the island of Rennesoya at the north. Just to the east of Rennesoya would be a good eastern extreme for me, and pretty much the west coast, having a coastline all the way down would be nice. If someone can render this for me, and show me sortof a scale, I would really like to have all medium tiles, but if another config.bmp is necessary it would be okay.

If anyone can understand the area I want, and might think it could be possible for them to do it in greyscale it would be very appreciated.

Why I have to use greyscale: I have tried many times to install both TerraFormer and Mapper. My OS is Vista, and I don't have the space on the hardrive for these programs. If I do, my computer really does not want them, because, even with DirectX installed, it will not let me open TerraFormer, which is said to be okay with Vista, correct? I'm sorry If the greyscale only requirements make it challenging for someone to map this area for me, it's okay. I'm sorry if this is an inconvenience to anyone either. Thanks!  ;D

If I remember correctly, cogeo makes maps the old fashioned way. The maps he have are of areas in Greece, but you might be able to contact him to make a map in Norway.
