Title: Help! Everything's Corrupted
Post by: hoopdedoo on November 30, 2009, 06:24:56 PM
I'm new to this site.  No matter what I try to download, I get a file corrupted error when I try to unzip it (example: "C:\Users\COCR2\Downloads\Setup_BSCCleanitolTM17.zip: CRC failed in Setup_BSCCleanitolTM24.exe. The file is corrupt").  I've tried at least a dozen downloads, and they ALL do it.  Some that I've tried are:
Mapper:  http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=179 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=179)
Terraformer:  http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=731 (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=731)
Cleanitol:  http://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=97 (http://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=97)
Dat Packer:  http://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=26 (http://www.sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=26)
And many others.

I've searched these forums and found some suggestions, mostly about emptying the browser cache, which I've done repeatedly.  I've tried both IE and Firefox (emptied cache for both), I've tried WinRar, WinZip and 7-Zip.  I can download zip files from other websites and unzip them without problems.  I've tried downloading to different folder locations.  But I still get the CRC/file corrupt errors.

Can anybody help?  Thanks.  (pulling out what little hair I have left).

Oh, I'm using Windows Vista, and IE8 and FireFox 3.5.5.

I'm not having any problems opening the files. Are you trying to open the zip file, or trying to extract? Maybe check to see how much hard drive space you have free?

I can open the zip files without problems, but when I try to extract them I get the errors.  I have 4 gigabytes free.  Thanks for replying.

Try just opening the Installer files without extracting?

Yes, I tried that too...no luck.

Hmmm... maybe try reinstalling winzip. Could be something gone wrong with the programs.

I had this problem once with a none SC4 site I was downloading files from.  Turned out I had a virus.  Have you done a virus scan lately?

I've now tried it on 3 computers, one with Vista Home, one with XP Pro and one with XP Home.  Tried IE and FireFox on each.  I just additionally tried a fresh install of Opera on the XP Pro machine.  No luck.

I just scanned the Vista Home machine with my installed AVG antivirus (clean) and the online Trendmicro Housecall (clean).

Both Winzip and 7-zip were fresh installs.  Also, the unzipper program that comes with Windows XP failed, too.

By doing some googling, I found another site that appears to be having the same problems, and I get the download errors there, too (Simpeg.com).  Here's the link to the thread, which includes a post from me: http://simpeg.com/forum/index.php?topic=8213.msg167165#msg167165 (http://simpeg.com/forum/index.php?topic=8213.msg167165#msg167165)

Thanks.

Mate, I hate to say it, but it sounds like an error at your end, especially if you have this issue on 2 different sites.  Are all 3 of the machines you are using on the same router?

I have had this issue now and then.. I have never found  a solution.. It seems to go away after a bit (maybe weeks) or if I dl the same file from another site... In my case it was on Simpeg.. For me it only occurs maybe <5% of that site's files and over a long period of time.. I've had that now and then from Simpeg for over 2 years at least. It is very odd. Once it happens on a file, it stays for that file from that site for some time.. weeks. The error is always the same "CRC error" which is not odd since anything that causes an extraction error would give that message. I have no idea as to cause and asking about it is pretty futile since it seems to devolve into finger-pointing exercises. Good luck with it.
It is a matter of curiousity to me.. no idea as to cause-effect. If the file is re-uploaded to the server, the problem also goes away, but of course site operators are not too excited about doing that.. hehe. Your case is very odd since it happens at all sites for all files.. that is interesting.

That's a good thought.  If you have a router or even a cable going bad it can cause corrupt downloads.  Plus you will go through spells where you have some clean ones then some corrupt one.

Check you router by taking one computer and hooking it up to the modem directly.  If you get several clean downloads then your router is going bad.  If you still have the same problem change the cable if that fixes it then it was you cable.

Do you use a download accelerator, I've used one before and it corrupted some of my downloads.

It isn't likely in my case.. it occured over 3 different routers, 2 different cable modems, and even over different cable installs (moved during the situation).

I don't have one installed.. Unless it's built into XP or IE8 (though it has occurred on previous versions) and he mentioned that he's tried 3 different browsers. And of course if it's "built in" it would be the same for others who use the same software.

I have no idea, but its an interesting puzzle

Geniuses!!!   :D    &apls    :D
Thank you all for your kind replies and analysis.  It WAS the router, specifically the SPI Firewall on it.
I ticked this setting: "Disable SPI Firewall" and it allows all downloads (with NO corruption), including on the SimPeg site.
It's easy enough to disable, download, then re-enable.
The router is a Netgear WGT624 v3.
Again, thanks to all of you.  Who knows....maybe this will now help some of you.

Cheers!

Bret

EDIT (added):  I found a forum that discusses this at length:  http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=6662 (http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=6662)
