Title: Lot editor on Windows 7
Post by: Jonathan on December 11, 2009, 11:36:16 AM
Whenever I try to open LE, only the windows border shows up and then it stop working. And if I try it in virtual XP mode then it says Failed to initialize DirectDraw, which I guess is because it is a virtual computer. So is there anyway to either make it work on windows 7 or in a virtual computer. I've tried the basics like compatibility, turning off Aero, going to Windows classic theme.

I have it working on my desktop, Jonathan, but I am away at the moment. I can't remember what I did or didn't do to get it working but it does take time to load up even with minimal plugins.

Strange, I was trying to use the one that came with BAT, but I went and downloaded the LotEditor installer from EA support button at the top. And now it works.

I would have though the BAT version is newer?

Anyway thanks for replying :)

Did you try running it in software mode? You can also make the window larger than 800x600 by defining a custom resolution, just like with SC4.

"C:\Program Files\Maxis\SimCity 4\Apps\LotEditor.exe" -d:soft -w -r1440x900

Or you could just use Wouanagaine's SC4PIM, and actually be able to see which props & textures you'd want to use before you place them. Just a thought.   ::)

I have tried that but found it a bit hard to use, and for a simple lot editor like me which just wants to make a new lot with one prop on, the maxis LE is simpler to use. If the SC4PIM had a toolbar or something as well as keyboard shortcuts(which i have to keep looking back at the manual for) it would be much better. Also after reading the manual I'm still not sure how to create a new lot.

To create a new lot, you first make the building exemplar, or use an existing one, and right click within it, selecting... (drumroll)...

It would be much easier if there is just a button (not hidden in a right click menu) which is labelled "create new lot". I'll use the PIM when there is some form of toolbar (especially for the LE).

I'm sure it is much more powerful than the maxis tools but if I don't know how to access parts without having the manual permanently open then it is easier for me to use multiple tools which I already know( I mean for the maxis LE and PIM and the reader I never needed a manual.

I've always thought right-clicking was the most intuitive way of seeing what you can do if there is no menu or toolbar with fancy buttons... ::)

It's good once you get into the program, it shouldn't be a replacement for a toolbar. (by toolbar I don't mean the file etc menus)
