Title: Problem with traffic!
Post by: MattyFo on December 12, 2009, 09:58:55 PM
I have no idea where to post this, but here it is anyways.  In my game the traffic alwasy appears and disappears and is only on the screen for a few seconds. also there are never any lineups at stop lights becasue vehicles alwasy dissapear when they get there.  Since i have always had this issue i figured it was just part of the game but now i am starting to wonder that maybe it is just my game.  althoguh i have had 2 diffrent copies of the game on 2 diffrent CPU's and the same issue, so i think it is the game but finally i may get closure from the SC4D community.

Thanks in Advance!!!

The busy images of "traffic" appearing and vanishing on your screen is a totally different process than your actual "traffic" as determined by a "route query (alt-?)". The only relationship they have is that the busier the spot the more likely that automata will appear.  That is simply "eye candy" automata and not "traffic". No need in losing any sleep over it.. you may even turn it off if you like, as I recall. (automata settings)

Also, there are some mods of the automata controller file out there that will show more automata and for a longer time (there's even one that shows them from start to end of the travel route) .. but that are mere eyecandy things. What you can read from your automata is the more crashes you see at a crossing, the higher the traffic volume at this crossing is - so at some time you should think of upgrading that part of the road network.

really, does anyone know where these are/what they're called? How much extra stress would that add to your processor?

Automata don't have a start or an end. They don't even have a travel route.
Their appearance is random, but based on the commute density and direction.
The more commuters, the more automata appears, just like SC4BOY explained it.

The duration of the automata is not based on time, it's based on number of tiles.
In the Automata Tuning Exemplar (or Automata Controller) there's a property called Vehicle Lifespan Range.

By default it is set to 10, 20 (0x0A, 0x14 in hex),
which means that every automata disappears after it has travelled at least 10, but no more than 20 tiles.
You can edit this property yourself and test what best suits your needs.

If you've got NAM, then the Automata Controller is found in the NAM folder (NetworkAddonMod).
Its name starts with "NetworkAddonMod_Automata_Plugin_", e.g. NetworkAddonMod_Automata_Plugin_Standard.dat

You could also have chosen the radical automata plugin when installing NAM.
That would have given you a Vehicle Lifespan Range of 50 to 380.
Read the NAM documentation for more information on that.

50-380, this sounds great to me, I too am bugged by cars disappearing every few seconds. However, does this have an overly detrimental effect on the game? If so what would be a more appropriate range to enter?

I think you'd better try that out for yourself. ;)
Tweak the values in Reader and test them in the game. Then, da capo... ::)
