Title: Garbage wont go away
Post by: Floydian on December 27, 2009, 06:50:04 PM
My city seems to be permenantly infested with garbage. If I have no facilities, it piles up even more. However, if I put tonnes of dumps/recycling centres/incinerators in, the garbage level will only go down so far before levelling out. No matter what I do, the garbage will not go below that level.

This is a rather large (~450000 sims) city, and the "minimum garbage level" seems to increase as the city grows.

Have you tried exporting your garbage to another city? I use a mod called THL_DataViewMod_MoreDetail, which tells you exactly what's going on with your garbage, and where it's going, but haven't been able to find it on the STEX to give you the link. I'll keep looking though.

The expanded THL data view mod is indeed a fine one.
According to the doc's that came with it, it shows

Screename: Thalassicus (PM me at Simtropolis.com)

That old link is broken. Thalassicus, as I recall has long retired from Simtropolis and SC4 generally. It credits Dirk, so you may have to PM Dirk to see if he has any ideas on where it vanished to... I expect it was lost during the ST version upgrade. A search on ST generated THIS LINK (http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=41&threadid=101990) It is a valid link to the forum, but I see no link to the download.

Looks like it was on the Modd&Program download section, section I can't find anymore

The reason why you can't get rid of your garbage is most probably that your garbage disposal facilities do not suffice to process all of your garbage your city produces. A city of 450,000 must produce some 1,600 tons per month (90 tons per 25,000 pop), if my calculations are correct (my measurements were taken long ago in a city with a lot of ID, which produces proportionately more garbage, so I may be a bit off). So most likely you need at least 3 W2E plants, only to cope with the garbage your city is producing; you actually need a lot more - temporarily - to dispose/process the whole stock. You can also try my non-power-generating Incinerator (http://www.simtropolis.com/stex/details.cfm?id=13614). To get rid of the garbage piled in your city (ie a high capacity for a relatively short period) you can employ landfills or sign deals. Or, if you want to go the cheaty way, you can try my Landfill Eraser Mod (http://sc4devotion.com/csxlex/lex_filedesc.php?lotGET=2252) (it was made for a different purpose, but still, will reset your garbage to 0... magically).

Another reason for the above may be poorly modded custom content (producing excessive garbage amounts). I can remember a BAT by Cobb, it was notorious for this. T-Wrecks on the STEX has released a patch (for this one, plus many other BATs/Lots), but this was long ago.

As for the dataviews, I would recommend that you install a Graph Mod (not dataview) upgrade. Check the one included in my Incinerator lot (link above). The standard Dataview (for garbage) is enough, I think (shows garbage-polluted areas in yellow and red). Btw xxdita, does Thalassicus' mod show something more in the DataView?

As for the figures displayed in the Graph Mod, bear in mind that the Garbage Capacity and Total Garbage plots are quantities, ie tons, while the others are monthly processing rates, ie tons/month. Also the Total Garbage figure does include the quantities stored in your landfills. To see if you really have garbage in your streets, check the Garbage Pollution plot (if it's zero or not) - as well as the Garbage DataView.

Hope this helps.

Nope... I mean, yeah, that's the one I was talking about, but not the right mod afterall.

Honestly, I've been using most of the same mods for so long that I often forget what it's like to play without them. I think I confused the DataView mod with GraphModd. V2, which I believe was done by RalphaelNinja, and I'm quite sure it was in the Modd&Program Section at ST, so probably lost in the recent upgrades.

So now I gotta go back and figure out what the heck THL's dataview mod does.... geez...

GraphModd. V2 By Tropod is still available on the STEX here

Thank you for that Catty. No wonder I couldn't find it, I swore it was RalphaelNinja.  &ops

The GraphModd. V2 gives expanded information on what's going on with your garbage, as well 3 new graphs: Radiation, Extrapolation, and RCI Totals.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi91.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fk301%2Fditareinvented%2FSC4D%2FScreenShot138.jpg&hash=6268cd1dc7ddae6db23f79d815ba53b74bea3167)

Another thing that should be pointed out is that any lots made using Maxis PIM are bound to have excessively high garbage outputs, unless the modding was altered after the fact, by someone that knew what they were doing. So I would highly recommend running any and every non-LEX download through Wouanagaine's XTool, for more balanced stats.

I know that the problem is not a lot producing too much garbage. Its a bug somewhere, but its not excess production. I could put in 30 waste to energy plants (I already have 3 pegasus over the edge dumps), 30 recycling centres, and the garbage will not go below a certain minimum. If I put dump tiles in at this point, they remain empty. Garbage is strewn across the map however, appearing on streets and lots

Perhaps this image can explain it better

Could it be a custom building you've downloaded? Maybe backup your city and start bulldozing through it, but each time you bulldoze an area give it enough time to affect the graph. That way you can track it down.

I did that when my power consumption jumped by about 60% in a large city - found out it was a growable building I had downloaded from the STEX that grew and caused power failures. I'm finding lots of downloaded buildings have extreme properties &mmm

Floydian, you should also check your budget panel, to make sure that this city isn't importing any garbage, and to make sure you don't have a slider bug (though I doubt that's the case). What kind of garbage facilities are you using?

Another oldie, but goodie mod

Well I just tried deleting the city chunk by chunk. Got the entire city demolished, minus a neighbor connection and garbage facilities (Now using the PEG CDK over the edge dump with 2 recycling facilities), and the cities garbage level remains unchanged. The population is 0, the city tile is empty, but the garbage doesn't leave. This only effects this lone city tile (Which is actually exporting garbage now despite not producing any), and seems to be permenantly engraved into it.

Have you by chance changed the date on the city tile. I had that happen to a city once .. a very odd situation.. the graphs simply didn't track the garbage properly.. it eventually went away but the garbage decrease was not properly tracked, but seemed to lag by a significant time. Here is a LINK (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=8509.msg265494#msg265494) to that thread if you want to take a read.

Does the extrapolation from the Graph mod really work?

Not really.. it's interesting to take a look, but of little value.. Obviously the author thought it was of some use.. In my case I have doubts that it even displays the proper values (at least in a mathmatical sense)... but honestly I haven't paid enough attention to it to really assess it. Those are just my thoughts on it.. I've been using the mod for at least 4 years.. Its the other items that I find fantastic for actual game play

The extrapolation graph gives you an idea of how much the extrapolation is impacting your city at that time. Generally, after 10 years or so, it balances out to zero though. This can be a good way to know when it's safe to save your city, without losing the extrapolation completely.

Hmm.. you're suggesting it is somehow related to regional demands or changes in demand.. perhaps its just the way I play, but it always just forms spikes about every 4 or 5 months.. it spikes one month, drops for either 1 or 2 months, then is flat till the next spike time.. I can't relate this to anything whatsoever...

and a dataview for garbage, perhaps?
once I had a farm that produced a lot of garbage, and when I finally put in the measures to remove it, it would not go away. so I deleted the farm, put in some streets and a recycling center nearby, and it went away. It was like the garbage collecters couldnt get to the garbage that was far away from streets or roads.

Yes but I've tried deleting the city in its entirety, putting in garbage dumps, and waiting, and it does not go down at all. I'll upload a data view later tonight.

I had the same problem with my port city. There is a download on the STEX to make garbage production very little via ordinaces, but this does not get rid of garbage already visible (it is the super demand ordinace mod v.2 or something). This is what I did. Landfills are a HUGE eyesore so don't even think of putting them down. Recycling centers don't work fast enough. So, try a combination of the recycling power plant and PEG's garbage disposal docks. These worked for me very fast and all garbage was gone in about 2 years for me. Hope this helps!
