How to get this into my signature?

I have an image I want to set into my signature, but I have a problem. The site rules dictate signature images must be 300x50 or smaller. And when I resize this picture to that size, the text is no longer readable, and more, the beauty of the image is also ruined. Is there a way to get around this?

Andreas

Try this: Reduce the original version of the pic (without the text) to 300x50. Then look for a font that can be read at a small size as well. Add it to the small pic and save it without too much compression. Maybe it would be better to use just one of the quotes - this would also retain the beauty of the image better than being plastered with text.

There is not such a font. I would need to use size 5.

Removing text kind of defeats the whole purpose...

Couldn't you add the text (as text) beneath the image in that case?

I tried that - it is also in my current signature. Unfortunately, it also defeats the purpose, as it lacks the beauty I had imagined in the signature. The image(s, now that I remade the image, below) and the text being separate destroys their unity. Unless I get a "A Glorious Dawn" type of beauty, I have failed.

PS
As I mentioned above, I remade the signature to include multiple spacescapes (in animated GIF form). Are animated signatures permitted? They are not mentioned in the rules.

Signature images shouldn't exceed a certain filesize (100 kB), but animated sigs tend to be rather large (almost 2 MB in your example, where a simple JPG image wouldn't exceed 100 kB). Also, a rapid animation distracts from the postings, so that should be avoided. Personally, I have to say that the wall of text definitely ruins the wonderful pics that you chose, one quote per image would be more than enough. If the animation was slow enough (say, 5 seconds for each frame at least), you could put one quote on each frame, for example. Other than that, do what RippleJet said (and like everyone else does here): Put the quotes as text below the image. This forum isn't really to show of your signature, but to provide knowledge and discussion about SimCity 4.

Yes, that is true.

Also true.

That is an amazing idea, and one that may help solve the problem. Thank you!

The reason I have it is because these quotes - and the worldview/ideas surrounding them - strongly influence my modding style in several ways, along with me as a person.

UPDATE:
IT WORKED!

IT WORKED!

Not quite... your signature image is currently over 500 kB.
The rules allow a maximum of 100 kB, and there's no exception to it.

You will simply have to reduce the number of frames from currently 40 to about 8.
Let me also quote the rules, in case you've forgotten:

  • An exception to the previous rule concerns images in signatures ("sigs").  We require, for several reasons, that you use only one image, that this image is limited to 300 pixels wide by 50 pixels high, and the size must not be bigger that 100K ( one page with 20*100K signatures = 2 MB ¡¡¡).

    First and foremost, we host your sig image here at SC4D.  Because many members have 10s, and sometimes 100s of posts in the forums, it creates in toto a tremendous and completely unnecessary drain on SC4D's bandwidth.  Once again, which would you rather have- as much great content as possible, or a six inch tall sig?  The answer is obvious. Second, the use by many members of large sigs serves to create a "bazaar" effect in forum threads, detracting from the comments and images that are the threads purpose in the first place.  Think of a road through a scenic area lined by a multitude of billboards- you get the point.  Finally, our server has been known to do strange things to big sig images...

    Please note the use of the past tense.  Thanks for your cooperation.

The above listed rules are mandatory. Breaking any of them may result in permanent banning without prior warning.

I'll give you a couple of days to rework and replace your sig. Don't expect the current one to last beyond the weekend though... ::)

Damn.

OK, this means I have to sacrifice the animation/transition between slides. Now it is five frames.

I suppose it is not all bad. I got to include three more quotes, and incidentally found a more appropriate image for the galaxyrise one. And it is still <100KB.

Hi all.  I just decided to make myself a signature.  You can see below that it is functional, but I don't quite understand what is acceptable.

The links have been made with the following code:

href="http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=11691.0" target="_blank" >Advanced Terrain Mod Tutorial. Last Update:10-02-10</a>)

Is this allowed, or even done wrong?  What do you think I can do to make it better?

Also, is there a thread about making hyperlinks?  Can I link to a certain line of a post?

Use BBCode for hyperlinks: (url=http:/www.thisismylink.com)This is my link.(/url) <- of course, you need to use [ and ] instead of ( and )

You can link to a certain post by copying the link in the heading above the posting. I don't think you can link to anchors inside a posting, though.

Actually you can. ;)

The code for the anchor is:

[anchor=name]Everything inside here is my anchor[/anchor]

To link to that anchor use either of these:

[url=#name]Here comes your text[/url]
[iurl=#name]Here comes your text[/iurl]

The latter (using IURL instead of URL) opens up the link in the same window (internal),
as opposed to opening up a new IE instance as the default URL does (external).
Personally I've always used IURL in my tutorials when linking inside it. ;)
Test the anchor within this post here, which is the underscored word "anchor" above. :)

Read more about the BBCODES applicable to this forum here. ;)
