Graphical glitches with shadows

I've noticed that I often get glitches with all the shadows in my cities. It usually happens after I save my city. Sometimes the shadows dissappear completely. Although minimizing the game and un-minimizing it works, it can happen completely randomly.

Sometimes, the screen goes completely blank except for the cursor. When I minimize the game, a message pops up and says "display driver nvlddmkm has stopped responding and recovered" I'm running all graphics options on their highest setting, i.e. 512x512 and high options for city detail, draw speed etc. The resolution I use is 1680x1050, and the game is running on 32 bit colour settings.

Is there a problem with the game, or is it my computer that has problems running the game? any help would be appreciated.
