News:

The SC4 Devotion Forums are no longer active, but remain online in an archived, read-only "museum" state.  It is not possible for regular members to post or use the private messaging system, and no technical support will be provided for any issues pertaining to the forums in their current state.  Attachments (those that still work) are accessible without login.

The LEX has been replaced with SC4Evermore (SC4E), and SC4E maintains an active Discord server.  For traditional forums, we recommend Simtropolis.

Using buildings in LE

I have been trying to use GC's Islington row house to make a street with different backyards for my own use.  When I open his lot I've tried to make it bigger and put more houses on the lot, but it will only let me 'replace' the building that's there.  When I open a different lot, make it the size I want, and go to the buildings menu, Islington isn't there.  It's not in props either.  Is there someplace the buildings go that I don't know about?  Or perhaps they're copyrighted or can't be used by anybody else?   There are a lot of buildings I have tried to use on my lots, (this is just the latest), and I've driven myself crazy trying to find out how to do it.  So it's time to admit that I need help.  Of the 'I'm a beginner variety'.  Thanks.

You probably have a combination of things going on actually...

You can only have one "building" on any lot.  Where ever you see multiple buildings on the same lot, you are actually seeing a building surrounded by props.  While many creators (myself included) make props from their buildings, not all do.  Also, many times these props are not necessarily found in the same download where you may expect.  Many times, buildings as props (if they exsist) are part of larger prop packs.

A model file will only be available for a lot if the right conditions are met.  First is size.  If the lot is too small for the building, the building won't show up.  Second is type.  If you try to make a residential lot out of a model that was modded as an industry, it will again not show up.  There are ways to turn a building model into whatever you want it to be, but it requires a decent grasp on modding the files that you download.

Not sure if this really helps or not, but I'll stop here for now.  If you need or want to know more, just keep asking!  ;)

Also, if you are interested, I recently put a tutorial in the LE tutorial section of this site. It can teach you how to do the model changing thing JB was refering to (as long as you have the particular model file). I'll second JB in that if you need anymore help, please ask. He's more of an expert on it than I am, but I'm always willing to help.

Thank you so much.  I am going to download the LE tutorial.  The problem though was that I couldn't find the tutorial, and had to go to the STEX, (Simtropolis), find a thread, that took me to the GMax tutorial, and then I backed up to the other tutorials and bookmarked the page just in case.  It's a good thing I did because I can't find it from here.  When I type in tutorial in the search box I find posts with the word 'tutorial' in them, but no tutorials.
And on the main LEX page there is no link to tutorials.  So I know it's here somewhere because I can go to it from my bookmark!  Someone has to come up with a confused smiley.  Or one that takes pink pills.

When you install the Lot editor the "manual" is also installed into your main Simcity4 folder  ( if you have installed LE to its default folder of course ).

For any tutorial here on the board ... click the next LINK! and it will get you to Devotion's extensive help forum.

OK.  I think I understand.  (I didn't even know there was a LE manual!).  And I just found out, duh, that there are 2 forums, BSC support, where I have been posting, and exchange support, which I didn't even know were forums.  And, by clicking backwards on the line I come to Sim City 4 Devotion Forums which has the tutorials!  I don't need to know why there are two forum places, I'm still working on the fact that there are tutorials  :), but since I just learned what STEX, PLEX and LEX mean, this is a major accomplishment.  I thank all of you for your time and patience in dealing with a computer illiterate.
