Hi, I've been playing around on sketchup and I've been making stadiums and other items. I'll export from sketchup as a .3ds, but when I import in Gmax, it says application error and closes Gmax. Is there anything I can do to stop getting this error? Thanks in advance.

Travis

I have a fair amount of experience working with importing sketchup files into gMax, so I think I can help. :)

Well, that error typically happens with large models, so I'd assume it has something to do with the size of the .3ds file. There is, however, a workaround. ;D

Google and download a trial version of Milkshape 3d, a 3d modeling and conversion program. Once you've got that set up, go in and import your .3ds file into it, then export as .3ds without changing anything else. That's really all there is to it. I'm not sure what MS3D does to the file to make it readable for gmax, but its always worked for me, so give it a try. Hope that helps. ;)

That would be my suggestion as well.

Yes MilkShape3D can read most 3d files, even those from export from the reader.

Alright, but now it says too many faces or verticies. I'm guessing this means its too large...

You could try saving  the file in another format like DXF, Gmax can import that as well.

I use the free tool Biturn to re-save files exported from the Reader.

The Reader seems to save the 3ds materials in a way that the Gmax 3ds importer does not like.  ::)
