Hi i am new to all this. I see some lots I'd like to download. My question is do i need the download the dependencies. Any advice is appreciated.

Ha, yes sure you do!

A lot is a set of textures and so called props and one building.
The building is usually the main structure on the lot and it is a file that contains the game information of the lot. Things like amount of jobs, garbage production, power- and water needs etc.
The textures and props are on the lot only in order to make it look nice. For functionality they are not neccessary, but they make out the looks of the game.

And there are models: these are the actual files that make the buildings look like 3 dimensional structures.

Dependencies are sets of files that contain textures and/or props and/or 3D-models.

If you do not install the dependencies you will only see the buildings, models and props that are part of the original Maxis game. Most custom lots will look very very empty and will contain a large brown box. This box means you do not have the model file of the building of this lot.

I hope this is clear to you. I got dizzy too the first time I read about this. You will get used to it.
