Alright, internet is come and go for a little while here until I get a better set up, but here's a little mini project from me.  An actual building! say what?  from me?  yep, that's right.  Kevdan did a Dairy Queen, but he did one of the more 'modern' looking ones, which just doesn't quite fit in with what I'm used to.  This is a layout that is very typical to many older dairy queen's in Texas.  I'm also working on a couple of addons to some of the existing parking lot textures, some of the results of which are visible here.  Anyone who has ever tried to make parking in a corner of a lot should have an appreciation for this ;).

I'm still working on a few details here, but this is close to being finished.  Comments are welcome ;).

Very nice, Chris. I remember visiting DQ's like this when visiting family near Palestine a couple of years ago. And I have to ask-will it be CAMpatible?

I'm looking forward to the release.

Cheers,
Kevin

Zaphod

nice

If it's not an odd request, what if you made the nightlighting more yellowish?

(old school fluorescent lighting)

OK wow ummm when did this happen Chris.... Daum that is looking real good, but i did notice the base of the building is umm a tad bit out of whack, how to fix that i don't know but i thought i point it out though.....  Far as the parking is concerned those are new textures??? Niiiiiiiice very nice, one thought though on that well to better explain look at some poor altering i did to the pic...

As you can see what i suggest is cut out the side parking and just have the driveway so it loops around the building and also you can see that i did a little altering to make the drive extend over the sidewalk as in whats done with the BLaM's overpath's props [Linkie]

Again Chris im sorry for doing that but i figured a pic is worth a thousand words and i promiss i wont do that again - pat

Big Slark:  Since it's not(quite obviously) above a state 8, CAM won't be needed for it to grow, but I am using the updated Kevdan lots as the basis for the stats on the building, which are of course CAMified if you will.

Zaphod:  I'd thought about that too, and I'll tweak the light color next time I work on the model.

Pat:  Your pictures are more than welcome pat, lol.  I think that the fourth prop in OP4's prop pack matches these textures already, though I haven't tested that yet.  In that case, putting an overpath prop would be easy, but I'm uncertain of it's flexibility with different network types and orientations, which is why I don't think you see many lots with them on it.  I'll look into it though.

As for taking the parking out on that back corner, I'm undecided.  Part of me thinks it looks good, but if you look at the lots for these old dairy queens, these isn't a whole lotta grass there in real life, lol.  They are more of a concrete slab with parking painted on and a building in the middle of it, so I wanted to keep that feel while still indicating the drive for the drive through.  We'll see what others think perhaps.

As for the building foundation, I'm planning on working on it, just saving that kind of thing for last.

Quite awesome lighting :P Roof junk is too "fat", maybe thinner and more different junk would be better.

Chrisadams3997, great job on the Old School Dairy Queen.  I love going there in the summer.  The onlt thing bothering me is the garbage dumpster on the grass.  I would leave the parking in the back as the two DQs I go to have no grass at all.

Wow, awesome job! This looks exactly like the DQ down the road from my house on US 79 and I-35. Although I think it would be better if you took out the grass since like you said, many of the old-school DQ's are just on one big concrete slab.

*wonders if you'll be doing an old-school Whataburger* ;)

Ah, yes . . . . . those are the DQs I remember when I lived in Texas.  I'll second the Whataburger request, and throw in a 'Jack In The Box'.

BigSlark

Not to detract from Chris' work in any way at all, but I thought Kevdan already made an old school Whataburger in the A-frame style?

He did... kinda. The Whataburger he did does have the A-frame, but that style has dormers on both sides of the A-frame, making it softer. This design was introduced in 1996. The old-school ones are just the A-frame. Sadly, I can't seem to find any pictures of one.

(And I got this information from their website. I'm addicted to Whataburger, but not that much. ;))

Aha. Whataburger only made it Mississippi in 2003 and all the ones here are in standard rectanglular fast food buildings. I think they took over all the old Hardee's in the metro area...

This is looking awesome, Chris! I'd leave the parking lots in the configuration that you have them, but maybe replace the grass with a concrete texture, as DFire870 suggested. Whatever you decide to do, I'm definitely gonna be using this! ;D

Well, the internet has been out here for the last three or four days, so let's see if I can get caught up before I lose it again.

I'm planning on leaving some grass as it will blend in with the other lots in the city better.  I took out the corragated addon on the back for size reasons, added the menu and redid the roof junk a little bit, and some other small tweaks.  I've also made it more slope friendly, and made a 2x2 growable lot, though I don't have pictures at the moment.  Really appreciate all the comments, though I've only been able to see some of them today, so I haven't been able to act on them.

Chris this is fantastic update on the OS DQ.... It looks like my local DQ - pat

Chris this does look alot better.  I really like the fact that you added the pavement texture under the garbage bins.
