Shadow Assassin

QuoteI still remember your excellent Caldera picture, your use of light on it was very good - I like the effect that some color remains, but the surface looks shiny thumbsup - I would like to know how to achieve such effect

To tell you the truth, that came about entirely as an accident. It was a derivative of my usual photo-editing for my SC4 updates (the trick is using Desaturate on the copied layer of the original).... and Lens Flare on a totally new layer.

Quotebut for example I didn't soften the horizon line and didn't alter the sky color right above the horizon.

The Feather tool is your best friend for the horizon line. The sky colour, that's fine... it's hard to find a sky colour that suits, because no matter where you are in the world, it will always be a different shade of blue. The intensity of the blue is dependent on how bright the sun is shining: it's more intense near the equator and becomes more whitish-blue (but not always) the closer you move to the north/south poles. (But if you take a picture of the sky when there's a lot of reflected light, it may actually come out as white - see my Surfer's Paradise pic I posted). If you say, look directly above you, you'll often see that it's a deep sky blue. Otherwise, it's perfectly OK to use that colour. :P

The whole thing about the sky is complicated. Best to keep it simple. Stick to a colour within the sky-blue part of the spectrum and you'll be just fine.

As for the two rock mods, Photoshop's your friend. If you take two pictures, both with different rock mods, paste the second picture on top of the first, cut out the section of cliff that you don't want the rock mod on, and sit back and enjoy the effect.

Thank you for this informative and fascinating update. It is a wonderful contribution to the entire community.
While every detail is worth studying at length, the snow especially caught my eye. I have avoided it in the past because it doesn't look right to me. Now, however, I know there are some alternatives.

Until next time...

Great picture Ennedi!!!

your presentation of the variuous terrain mods is wonderful :)

I use Medowshire with PEG Limestone, and I'm very happy with it... Just a question tough: what kind of water mod you use? I'm not very satisfied with Brigantine..... (too much transparency IMO)

Great tests you performed my friend.  That must have taken you some time.  It's very cool that you have patience for such a task.  Maybe one day I will get to that part of the game and do some terraforming of my own, but until than I think I'll stick to my cities that are fairly flat.  Although some of these techniques I could use along shore lines.
Thanks for the picture.  You are just too funny.  I was just being critical on your pictures.
Anyways, I can't wait to see what you have in store for us next.  What ever it is, I'm sure it will be awesome, as always.

First of all that picture you made from Robin .... May just be my favorite picture I have ever seen in SC.  It is perfect in every way.  A truely amazing piece of art!

Next on the update.  It was very informative and really showed the differences.  I have always gone back and forth but never really thought of putting pictures next to each other and comparing, it really shows the differences in them.  I have really come to like the meadowshire terrain.  I still not to sure of a great rock mod but this helps.  Thanks for doing this.

Hi Adam ,

The " Special Interest of the month" ended , this MD keep on being a First Interest . I don't know many MDs/CJs  being able to be as captivating in their "Making of " than in their results ... I remember that Jeroni has edited that good tutorials at the birth of SC4Devotion ... ::)

The setting and use of terraforming tools is still a pain for me ... :-[  :P  $%Grinno$% , I'm afraid of never reach your skill with .I'm sure of , I've got no patience for terraforming . Your textures are fabulous (  :'( ) and this river is so close to one of my favorite in France ( The Durance , from Alps ... ) that I can't resist to post a picture of it here .

I've tried many time to reproduce that and gave up . Always . So I can enjoy not only the amount of work/patience/skill but the amount of watching /devotion & love too requested for ...

Thank you Adam to give us so high feelings ; I think that , finally , I'm in a better company than you are . ;)

I've never seen anything comparing all those terrain mods to each other, it is extremely informative, to say the least.

Soon, my friend, you will be the terrain mod master.... someone we all speak to so you can answer all of our questions. You must be finding now that the possibilities of what you can do with terrain seem endless! I know that's how I feel (I'm trapped in the dark ages with the Columbus Terrain Mod!).

Well.. you know, nobody has ever convinced me that I needed to switch terrain mods, but I think you just did.

I really need to thank you for providing those images to the community. You have done some amazing work here in your MD, and I look forward to each update.

I wonder what some of your images would look like if they were edited with photoshop by Shadow_Asssassin (check out his MD, Ensenada - it's awesome). But, these images are excellent as they are already.

Great work, Adam, (drop me a line anytime) keep this up!

Wow, you are a prodigious artist my friend. Just when I think I've decided upon the best CJs on the site you come along. These look like photographs out of National Geographic.....well, maybe not quite. They're pretty darn fantastic anyway ;)

Cheers to you.

I'm going to agree with and add on to that:

2.  definitive: authoritative and perfect as a standard of its kind: a classic example of a MD and what it should be :P
