Jon,

I think I like Fledgeling's idea of making that section narrower to lower the over all height of the roof.  You could still make the tower higher, though.   ;)
You are just going crazy with this project, I love it.

This is looking fantastic! I have been looking for a grand county courthouse for my region and this will work perfectly. in the pic of the real building the peak of the roof comes in under the halfway mark on the tower, so the tower should definitely be taller. The real building didn't really seem to have steps at the entrance, but i hope you can work in some dramatic steps at the front.

Honestly, I'd change it to a mansard roof like on the original photo.  You don't find hip roofs that crazy except on luxury suburban homes.  Plus, you can add those fun little spires at the corners of the rooftop!

Duane:  Thanks!  There will be some external dependencies, yes.  I don't have a full list yet, but it will probably be very close to the list from the Swan Majestic with the addition of some BSC Park sets.

Fledgeling:  I believe you're right about the original building's roof, but I didn't end up doing that just yet.  I tried making the center portion with a smaller roof, but then ran into the problem where the peak was right at the back of the bell tower, which didn't look so hot either.

Strech:  Thank you!  I scaled the tower up a little bit more.  It didn't really take much and I think it did the trick.

Robin:  Thanks!

Ardecila:  Aack!!!  Anything but suburbia!!!  :D  I tried this idea first... and still added the fun little spires anyway.  It's still open to change though.

I had a wonderful morning today!  I spent two hours at the dentist getting prepped and fitted for two crowns.  Then I spent a while just letting the one side of my mouth do whatever it wanted thanks to the novacaine or whatever he used.  So I thought, "What better way to pass the time than to sit here and BAT while I drool all over myself?"  And that's just what I did...

I stretched the tower another half a story and fixed the little details to fit the roof line better.  Then I did the back wall and porch.  I still haven't come up with a staircase for the front yet.  I've had a couple ideas, but none that quite fit the size I need for the path.  So I went back around and started adding the finishing details on various areas.  Which brings us to right about here:

I'm not sure if I want to continue the crenelation detail on all the smaller dormers or leave them as is.  I think it might be a bit much if I do all of them.  I'm also still debating side entrances.  Still a fair bit to do, but I'm going to need to think of a name before too much longer.  So far it's just labeled as "Saginaw Old Main"  :D

wow, love the details you have yet added &apls &apls
i'd say you don't need to add side entrances, but that's my opinion &Thk/(

Jon, I was thinking I'd agree with the no side entrances...but then back in time wouldn't they have had a top floor fire escape on one or both sides?

Racking my brain but can't help with the name unless ... given the date of construction...something to honor Abraham Lincoln?

Ah well.....will look forward to the next update and hope your teeth don't hurt when the novacaine wears off &cry2

I would leave the crenellations as-is. If they maintained their height, they would look off, but even in small form it might still be too much. I like the stairs from the back, but as for the front I have no suggestions. That weathervane at the top is a nice touch though. Glad to hear the post-dental numbness was able to be used so well. I'm using the dead spots (when I just have to put down the books) in my studying for law finals to tinker with the BAT a bit more. Thanks for the tip about the text tool. I've seen it in passing before, but never really noticed it (obviously, hence the previous question heh heh). Who knows, with the time in between semesters, I might open a thread here to get some feedback and pointers. Hope the pain isn't too bad from the dental work, and I'll see you next time.

It still doesn't quite fit properly, but it's close.  I just thought I'd post it now to see if I'm headed in a good direction lest I continue racking my brain for something that looks like poo...  If this is a workable solution, I plan to add some kind of built in planter, statue, land scaping something or other between the stair cases.  The red is my measuring stick for the path... so you can see I'm still a touch too narrow right now.  Your thoughts?

Hey Jon the progress for the front steps is looking decent and I do have to say you are heading down the right stepps lol....

Just wondering is this something like the way you are planning for the pathway...

then having a statue sitting in the middle or more by the back wall???

I would have to second Pat's idea, however, I would suggest just a Y made with right angles: straight down, straight to the middle, then down  with a fountain or something in the resulting rectangle. If you want to keep the curve, I think it might be interesting to see full curves (I'm not sure how it would fit with the angularity of the building, but it would be interesting to see).

Mauricio: (Part One) Thanks!  I'm leaning towards no side entries as well.

Duane:  Thank you!  You're probably right about the fire escapes, although I've gotten away with skipping them on all the other buildings so far.  So I'm not sure if I'll add them here or not.  If I do, then I'll feel like I need to go back and redo all the other ones... which I can't say as I'm thrilled about.  :D

Matt:  (Part One) Thanks for the opinion on the crenelations.  That's kind of what I was thinking and it always helps me to have things confirmed by someone else.  I skipped over the text tool for quite a while too before I finally had one of those "let's see what this does" moments.

Pat:  Thanks!  That's not really what I have planned, no.  The red is the size of the full path which matches up with the wider paths I showed textures for earlier.  I do plan on adding something between the stair cases so the path would essentially "end" at the base of the steps.

Matt:  (Part Two)  I foresee two problems with what you describe, although I won't rule it out until I've tried it.  If I make a right angle with each stair case, they'll either need to be pushed out even further to the sides to allow room for a T path in between.  I also think the open space between the porch and the lower steps would end up looking quite narrow and crowded.  As for the full curve... well, that's just more geometry than I feel confident in knowing!  :D

Mauricio:  (Part Two)  Why in the world did I start another response?  See above...  ::)  :D

Thanks for all the feedback.  I'm at work for now, but I'll have some more to show this evening I'm sure.

I really like the angle of the steps, it contrasts well with the buildings angles and yet still fits perfectly (!?!)...
I see what you mean about the fire escapes....oh what the heck, lettem jump :o....seriously the only reason I would consider them on this building is the size of the building and to highlight a side view.

Yeah, I kind of forsaw some potential problems when I was describing it too. But if it worked out, it could look pretty good. As far as the curved staircase goes, I agree with you about the geometry thing; it's doable, but takes quite a bit of time. I will be interested to see how it comes out though.

Krio

Oh my :P this is looking too good  Reminds me about Smithsonian Institue / Museum, I've seen it only at games (and recently burned it to ground when playing Act of War  $%Grinno$% ), but it still great building.

"burned it to the ground"   Man that was really rude.... :D

Duane:  Thanks!  I'm hoping the ivy will be enough to give the sides a little more visual interest.  If not, maybe I'll give the poor kids a way out!

Matt:  How does this one grab you?  ;)

Krio:  Thanks and welcome to the thread!  Usually, I ask people to make at least three posts here before they start burning stuff... but that's just a personal preferrence of mine.   :D

I think I finished up the porch area.  I also added a little more trim work on the roof (and then forgot to do the tower roof... oops!).  I also added the initial textures.

I think we're getting close now.  As far as I can tell, I still have roof junk, ivy, and interior work before calling this one finished.  And then we're down to one more building to finish the set!

&apls  with the textures the green of the crenelations is a perfect contrast....and the pigeon roost....er...statue is just right in the planter (?) area.  I'm now in the officialy excited stage.....

Oh, and since they're kids, let'em climb down the ivy, after all they're more athletic than old (inappropriate term)s like me....and anyway, being college kids they've prolly snuck out of their dorm rooms that way anyhow ::)

Nice work (I'll still call it that) Jon
