Mmmmmmm good...... &apls   I can wait....really ... I mean it.....really, well, for a little while......and ain't this "game" quite the thing for letting the world go by unoticed for while?

And...I havn't hit my brother since you said not to.......when are we stopping?   Are we there yet?    ;D
Sometimes I go into my own little world....but it's ok, they know me there.

EDGE:  Thanks!  Glad you like it!

Cali:  Thanks to you as well!

Threestooges:  Thank-you!  There actually is a door back there, but it got hidden by the SC4 angles.  It's off that back dock between the stairwell and the fire escapes.  Besides... find me an alley in a city like Chicago where there isn't a stray car parked for one reason or another.   ;)

Oldrogue:  Such a great "game!"  What more needs to be said?  You need to stop... again???   ;D

I'm still working on the foundations for these buildings... I've never done my own, so it's taking a little longer than it probably should, but it will happen eventually.  In the meantime, I just wanted to actually BAT for a change (most of what I've been doing lately is everything but making models) so I thought I'd work on Westlake a little more.  Here is the latest on the main building:

Still a ton to do... but it's getting there.  I'm not sure about the side porches just yet, they seem a bit "much" for secondary entrances, but we'll see.  I also just started on the back portion, so there are a lot of things missing from the center part especially... many of the blank spots will still get filled in.  That's all for now!

I love the total Gatehouse apperance of the main entrance....can't seem to take my eyes off of that particular feature.....well done.....

Oh....don't need to stop now......oopss.......sorry &ops

The only suggestions I might have regarding the stairs on the sides (perhaps one will help):

1: If I count right, the front seems to have 5 steps and the sides each have 7. They seem to start at the same height and descend the same length (correct me if I'm wrong since you are the one who made this...and would thus know how far something descends). The extra stairs seem to add a dimension of grandeur.

2: The main entrance has a narrow stair opening to a (for lack of a proper word) patio area. The sides stairs have a full wrap around effect and are curved in that fact. Curvature (as far as I have seen...and I'm not an engineer or an architect: I'm an economic major) seems to be a more costly and/or grandiose style. Perhaps consider squaring the corners.

3: The front seems to have a narrower path for students whereas the sides seem like they can handle greater quantities of people which could cause them them to be viewed as more prominent routes.

Good luck with your own foundations. If they are up to your usual standard, they should be a real asset. Take it easy and enjoy the weekend (what's left of it anyway).

Looking great JB. This is a really beautiful model. Since you asked I don't think you need to change the overall feel of the side stairs. Threestooges already offered my two suggestions. I might be tempted to make the side stairs straight and dump the curved look. I think you definitely need to sort it out so that there are the same number of stairs.

One other thought. Such a huge building like this would surely have a wheelchair ramp to the front or the side. I would expect there would have been some renovation along the way to make such a prominent public building like this more accessible.

These issues are of course exceedingly minor. This really looks good.

JBSimio

Oldrogue:  Thanks... the center portion is definitely my favorite part of this one too.  It better be really... about 15% of the polygons for this entire model are in that part alone!

Threestooges:  Thanks for the feedback.  The side porches are actually higher than the front.  I had a reason in mind when I did it, but can't for the life of me think of what that reason was now!  It can  be easily changed and I think will make a big difference by itself.  As for the size ideas... they're both very valid points.  It's kind of a toss up on which way to go for me.  On one hand, the front entrance is traditionally the "showcase" entry and should be more grand in some way, shape or form.  On the other hand, because of the layout of the campus and the fact that the majority of students live in the dorms, the side and rear entries would end up getting much more use in the day to day comings and goings.  So... I'm not sure what I'll end up doing just yet, but suggestion #1 will definitely change things and the other two help clarify a few ideas in my mind.  Thanks again.

Spa:  Thank-you.  Yes, the different porch heights will be fixed and we'll just go from there.  I was just thinking about a wheelchair ramp today and trying to decide where I might put one!  How do you always know that stuff?   :D

I did get a little more done with the back entry today, but ran out of time to take any pictures.  I'll probably get a bit more done after I get back home tonight (stupid job always butting into things!) and have some pictures tomorrow.  Funny that the porches became such a point of discussion, because the back one definitely will illustrate the idea of being the most heavily trafficed.  It's bigger than the front porch, and yet a little less formal (at least that's what I'm going for, but we'll see when it's done!)  TTFN!!!

 &apls Looking absolutely wonderful!

JBSimio

Cammo:  Thanks and Welcome to SC4 Devotion!

OK... here's the update I mentioned yesterday.  There's not as much done as I had hoped there would be, but I did get the porches sorted out.  I also noticed a glitch with the large arched windows, so I had to fix that.  Little by little, I'm also getting some of the "extras" in place... things like downspouts for example... but there's still much more to go.

I still don't know what's going to go on either side of the big arched window in the back... something will be there, but I haven't decided what just yet.  I also may change the handicapped ramp a little bit, but that should be its final resting place.

If all goes well, I may have a texture preview of the girl's dorm to show next time!  Keep your fingers crossed...  ()stsfd()

I'm glad to see that the 3rd "school pack" is still under way and am astonished, as usual, but the amount of detail and effort put into this!

Like I said, what feels like eons ago :P, I am patiently and eagerly awaiting this (these?) masterpiece(s)'s release!  &apls &apls

It looks great. The back turned out very nice. If you wanted to have some fun (or make more work for yourself) you could add two ramps to the main entrance from the top part where it juts out on either side and have them follow the building on the way down (flush with the building and curved to match the towers (pillars, etc)). As for the spots next to the center arch in the back, it would depend what was up there/what it was to be used for. I might suggest, if it was a more formal place, two slightly smaller arches (one on each side) or something to that extent. All in all, this really looks great.

M:  Thanks!  Actually, this is going to be its own release.  Volume Three is done (has been for a while) but on hold until the issue with Mac users is fixed.  Unfortunately, we're not having much luck tracking it down at the moment.

Threestooges:  Thanks!  I have some ideas for that area, just haven't decided which one to use yet.  No ramps in the front... I don't want to clutter that facade too much.

Rayden:  You're a sick man (unless you're still in high school!)   :D  Thank-you!

Cali:  I don't plan on putting any signs directly on the buildings, but I will have some props for the "front yards."  Actually, the concrete just above the back porch (flanking the doors) are shields of the school crest, but don't show up too well.  I'm hoping to fix that, but it might be too small to really do much more with.

Oldrogue:  Thank-you!  See the response to Rayden...  $%Grinno$%

Jacky:  Thanks as always!

OK... I have to make this kind of quick as I need to be somewhere else in about ten more minutes.  Not only did I get texures on the girl's dorm, but also on the boiler building.  AND... I got lighting for both of them.  First the dorm:

I'm not positive about the brick yet.  The color is pretty close to what I wanted, but it seems a little too "soft" still.  Every time I try to give it more definition though, it ends up looking dirty... which I don't want.  So... I'm still tinkering, but overall it is pretty close.

Now the boiler:

The lighting still needs some fine tuning on this one, but I decided I should really sleep at some point last night!  I'm just not getting the inside views I want of the main boiler and pipe work (which is all in there somewhere).

That's all for now!

Wow! Although it looks nothing like my university, I find it incredibly beautiful! And I'm also glad to hear that this is not the 3rd School Pack... lol.

Good luck, and keep up the great work! Thanks for sharing the progress of this magnificent project!  &apls &apls

It looks alot like both the university at which I went to school, and the one my GF is currently a professor.    She teaches at Loras College [note the building at the top of the page linkie ]and I graduated from Tennessee Technological University [ linkie ] .
   Great work JB.
