Fantastic airport!  That's a seriously huge set of terminals.  The satellite terminals are accessed through underground routes?

You're telling me I get to be home for more than 12 months?

That was a fantastic update, Zack.

I think we'll have to look in the Best Sellers.

Your updates are so frequent its hard to keep up with you, excellent work my friend.

Itching for more

Battlecat: Thanks a lot! You're right on the money about accessing the satellite concourses - an underground train links all four concourses, much like at Denver International Airport.

Tomas Neto: Thank you, Tomas! Great minds think alike...

meinhosen: Thanks!

Ethan (ecoba): Welcome to Nyhaven, and thanks for your compliments! You're right about which section I'm in now that August is over; I've fixed that in my post above. I hope you enjoy today's update! Take care, my friend!

djvandrake: Thank you! I've always liked airports, since I've spent so much time in them on account of my father flying commercially for United. I'm glad you approve of the job I did on Astoria's airport. Come back soon!

Alex (Driftmaster07): Thanks!

just_a_guy: It is large, isn't it? Thanks for your kind words!

citycapitalizer: Thank you! I hope today's update is as enjoyable as my others.

Today, we're taking a little break from the usual storyline to examine the quads that make up metropolitan Nyhaven in detail. I was inspired to do an update on statistics after reading calibanX's own such update to his CJ "Monument Valley". So, Geoff, if you're reading, this one's for you!

Here's a new region view of metropolitan Nyhaven, with the quad borders shown and the indiviual quads named. These 22 quads are where all of Nyhaven's 2.2 million residents live, work and play. Keep the sizes of these quads in mind as we go through the following sets of statistics; I'll keep showing the quad names in each following image.

First is a look at the basic demographics of Nyhaven's cities: their populations (in thousands), their Equcation Quotients, and their life expectancies. As you can see, the central quads are the most populous, and their residents are the smartest and healthiest in the area. Meanwhile, most of the outlying suburbs' residents have lower EQs and LEs. This disparity can be explained by the fact that the inner city is much older (in game years) than the outskirts; in most cases, the outer suburbs have only been around for a year or two. As these suburbs get older, their reisdents should get smarter and healthier, just like their inner-city neighbors.

Here's a look at crime rates in the region. There are more crimes committed in the inner city quads than in the suburbs, due to their having more residents, many of whom earn less than the suburbanites (as the next image will show). However, Nyhaven has invested heavily in law enforcement, much like Lower Columbia as a whole, and most of these criminals are eventually caught. In fact, for the entire metropolitan area, 176 crimes out of the 254 committed last month result in arrests. To be sure, there are certain neighborhoods that are less safe than others; the suburbs of Fairfax and Overland Park are not places where you'd want to hang around much at night. On the other hand, and perhaps surprisingly, the inner city may actually be safer.

As I mentioned above, residents' income goes a long way in explaining crime rates. This image shows why. As is common in large cities, most of the urban core's residents earn less than their suburban counterparts, in some cases as much as four times less. Since these poorer urbanites outnumber suburbanites in Nyhaven, the metro area's average income is somewhat low.

A surprising anomaly can be found in looking at the income for people living near Port Nyhaven. Although you might expect dock workers to earn less than most others, a great deal of gentrification has occurred in this part of town. This quad is also home to the reclaimed land added to Hunters Island in Update 26, where a number of wealthy residents have moved to.

This image also examines the quads' own budget situations. The central Nyhaven quad enjoys an unparalleled budget surplus of $84,000, thanks to the corporations renting office space downtown. The city as a whole is heavily in the black, thanks in no small part to the aftermath of the Simlympics. Even two decades later, it seems that international visitors are still flocking to Nyhaven.

Pollution levels in the city are generally low, as this image shows. The first number under each quad name is the level of air pollution in that quad, while the second number is the amount of water pollution there. As Lower Columbia transitions away from internal-combustion-driven cars, the air quality in Nyhaven has been getting better and better. Most of the pollution in the city now comes from heavy industry and not traffic. The water quality in most of the city is also fairly good. The only exceptions are in the two quads with airports; the airport fuel depots contribute a lot of pollution to the local water.

Finally, here's a look at local commute times in minutes. As you can see, the highest travel times are mostly in the inner city, where traffic congestion is heaviest. The suburbs generally enjoy very short commutes. The only exceptions to this trend are the suburbs of Overland Park and Whitehall Shores, whose commute times actually exceed those of the more urban quads. It may be that these longer commute times are more accurate, as I recently switched traffic simulators to Simulator Z Medium, and I haven't had a chance to play many quads with it installed yet. As I replay the other quads, their reported commute times will probably increase. Oh well, I guess that's something to look at in a future update...

Thank you all so much for taking the time to follow Nyhaven. If this update wasn't as exciting as previous ones, don't worry. The storyline will be back next week! Until then...

Feel brand new. Be inspired.

I agree with Glowbal, that was very fun to read! It gave me a lot of insight into Nyhaven, and I hope you do some more things like that sometime! :)

meinhosen

That was pretty enlightening (and fun to read/view).  I'll echo Jason: you'll have to do that again sometime (I really would like to see it again after your suburbs have matured).
You're telling me I get to be home for more than 12 months?

Battlecat

Interesting read!  Plus, it's always nice to see your region shots!  Nyhaven is growing fast.

djvandrake

I'll echo the comments above as well.  That was very enlightening and I enjoyed it.  I like insights such as this as it helps me plan my city better too.

jimbo_jj

Very enlightening. One can create any storyline they want to fit their MD but it's good to remember that cities develop as a dual effort by the players and the simulation. These stats show us just how the simulation has played its part. Not to mention the region shots are pretty cool, too! Great job! ;D

Glowbal: Thank you! It took a lot of work to put this update together, so I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Jason (Albus of Garaway): Thanks a lot! Enlightening you all was my goal in putting this update together, so I'm glad I succeeded at that. You can be sure to see another update like this in the future.

meinhosen: Thank you, my friend! I wasn't sure how much fun an update made up of only statistics would be to read, but it's great to know that you enjoyed it. I'm sure that once the suburbs have matured and I've had the chance to replay all the quads with Simulator Z, things will be different, so another update like this one will definitely get posted down the road. Come back soon, and take care!

Battlecat: Thanks! I agree that region shots are nice to look at, and you're right about Nyhaven's growth - it has definitely sped up as of late.

djvandrake: Thank you very much! If these stats have helped you with city planning, I'm glad to have been so helpful to you.

James (jimbo_jj): Thank you, James! You're absolutely right about how important the simulator is. It's easy to plop an eyecandy city, but I enjoy the challenge of building and maintaining an organic, living city, despite the simulator's flaws.

Alex (Driftmaster07): I'm sure it has been a while. It's good to see it from on high again, isn't it? Thanks for commenting!

citycapitalizer: Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed those stats.

Well, as of today, Nyhaven has been online for three whole years! (The original Nyhaven thread was started over at ST on this date in 2006.) It's really thanks to your support and comments that it's lasted this long, so give yourselves a pat on the back for helping to make Nyhaven so successful!

Here's to another three years!

Feel brand new. Be inspired.
