Hey there, Scott.

Well, I for one, use Paint.net to give my pictures a bit of jazzing up... other people use anything from Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Irfanview and even Microsoft Paint to get the job done, it's really whatever you feel most comfortable. Irfanview and Paint.Net are avaliable off the internet for free, and competely virus free  ;)

There are a few things that you can do in-game to get your cities dressed up in their Sunday Best...
I noticed that you have the grid on when you take you screenshots, you can turn it on and off by pressing "G" in game.
Also, I seen that some of your buildings are suffering from "China Syndrome", that is, you can see only black on the base of the lot, you can get rid of this by checking you have all of the dependencies of the lot, in particular the Texture Packs... alternatively, go to the "views" panel in the Mayor Mode toolbar and select "Zones", then switch back to "All Off"... this will reset the lots to have a transparent texture, that is, you see the texture of the ground that it sits on below.
The "Pause Ring" appears around your pictures, you can try turning it off, or using this [link] Mod that will get rid of them for you.

I think that the best way to improve is to show what you have and get feedback... Don't expect everyone to comment, though...
just have a look around other's MD and ask question about how they did things, I'm sure authors would be more than happy to answer questions!

I'm sure you'll get there eventually, an MD that shows growth in quality will always be popular...

to sum things up, with a cliche  ::): "Practice Makes Perfect"

Looks great but two things

1: Terrafrom a bit more, you need to flatten out the canal and port area's

2: More trees please.

other than that I love this cj

This is coming along nicely.  Forestville looks quite nice indeed.  Looking forward to seeing what else you've got in the works here!

Here's a handy trick for leveling terrain: if you single click a road into place instead of dragging it'll level the terrain in the area.  If you then add another single tile road to the neighbouring tile, it'll level to the same height as the first road.  And so on for any size area you choose.  It's very handy for making sure things like canals are level.
