Title: Far Away
Post by: Q-Tips on January 31, 2010, 02:27:08 AM
Part 3.1 : Bonita City                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              For many years i have been playing Sim City. And always the same region. I started way before any terraforming or Nam. However, during the last year i realiced i'm never going to finish this region. Both because i am not happy with how it have turned out, after all ther have been much happening since i started. Also becouse i have become shop owner of a convenience store now, so i have little time left for playing.

Well even if i am not gonna continue playing this region, it might be interesting enough to post some of it. But remember : Take it as it is. Some parts are very old, and some are new.

Today i am just gonna post a region overview, so you get some idea of where i am later on.
The region is big, and if you want a complete region view, i made this link for you :

http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/9864/farawaystan.jpg

And here is a smaller picture of the region :
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg535.imageshack.us%2Fimg535%2F3410%2Ffarawaystansmall.jpg&hash=7f8850774322addd8b50f925f7492b212f886ab2)

I decided to call the region : Farawaystan.
The largest city at south-west is the capital Victoria City, with a population of 1.2 million. Tomorrow i will show you around there.

Part one : Victoria West.

Thank you all for comments. I hope i will be able to show you much off Farawaystan.
I will start with this overview of Victoria :

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg10.imageshack.us%2Fimg10%2F5526%2Foversikt.jpg&hash=0142f75ead162ac18bc9934c306977b041e9b3b2)
Victoria have a population of about 1.2 million.
As you can see there is a canal crossing the city, and is noticable in many of pictures you will see from Victoria.
Theres many highways of the standard Maxis style going out from Victoria to some neighbour cities. I didnt use NAM highways simple because i started making the highways before NAM came up with anything.

What you will see now is the western part of Victoria. That would say some parts west of the highway going south out of city.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg294.imageshack.us%2Fimg294%2F3748%2Fcathed.jpg&hash=7ecb0f6a7968d4be083a81886cd2c5ddb71ba577)
One of Victorias churces. As you can see, i had some shadow problems in the park. I dont know why.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg693.imageshack.us%2Fimg693%2F6184%2Fhighwa.jpg&hash=c588e6e3219f6ff9fb26c510a29723eddaeec468)
At the highway.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg205.imageshack.us%2Fimg205%2F3646%2Fbridgey.jpg&hash=efc3e96ed998653659caf7ded7bd023a33fd5a83)
One of the bridges who crosses the canal.

(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg684.imageshack.us%2Fimg684%2F4388%2Fdowntvic.jpg&hash=4c23fefd35082b82214d012397c6d22f7e690303)

Well i would love adding more pictures but Imageshack have started acting real weird. So i leave it with this and try adding more tomorrow.

Wow. Nice update. Love the region shot as well as the close ups.

The park lots at the church look really good, and I like the a bit wear down atmosphere at the canal. Only thing I miss a bit is railways ...  :D

Take care my friend!

kwakelaar : Thank You! You will have the chance taking a closer look at some of the coastline real soon.

jmyers2043 : Thanks. It have not been that big job. I just done a little now and then. And after a few years it ended up big.

Rady : Yes, the farming in south and east of Victaria are rather heavy compared to the more remote places in north and east. I will show some of the farms later. I hope.

Sciurus : Thanks for your comment. And by the way, i love looking at your work. You have had many nice pictures.

riiga : Takker så mye. Jeg er glad du liker bildene. Thanks.

canyonjumper : Thanks for your comments. You will soon see many parts of both the larger and smaller cities.

Bernhard : Thanks for your comments. And YES : We got to have some railroads. I think i need to get back to this!

bat, Tomas Net, canyonjumper : Thanks for your comments.

Heres a preview of whats gonna be my focus for tomorrow :
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg232.imageshack.us%2Fimg232%2F3184%2Fmossa.jpg&hash=e1f9ca0ddfde9efd6cc874a7b18d6fd0b4a79a8c)
Yes! You might have seen this before. I posted it on "Show us your..." last summer.
What i was thinking about tomorrow, is to show you more detaied pictures of this district. And maybe show you what you cant see on the mosaic.
By the way, can you see where this is on the region view?

Edit: Yes I can see it... it's on the top left of your region view :P

Part two : Mossa

The little town at the top of the mosaic is named Mossa. So i'll just called the entire district the same.
Let us start at the bottom of the mosaic and go north :

2.01 :
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg188.imageshack.us%2Fimg188%2F3523%2Flighthouse2.jpg&hash=231aeef7a89bdd713bf8faa8f85c805dd4cde10c)
The Old lighthouse who are now automated are only reachable by walking a track from the old fishing village. (or by boat)

2.02 :
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg193.imageshack.us%2Fimg193%2F282%2Fwoodbridg.jpg&hash=ef96657da656d80d9076d7eaccc507159a025218)
The wooden bridge you need to cross for getting over.

2.03
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg203.imageshack.us%2Fimg203%2F9194%2Fwhale.jpg&hash=dd8e87d37e2ad491c4a41bc64e088faeead86e12)
The districts are well known for its wild life. If you are lucky, you might even see some whales swiming besides the cliffs.

2.04
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg683.imageshack.us%2Fimg683%2F664%2Fcabbin.jpg&hash=8cf2eb742c28032c21a6876589d01bc69578445d)
On your walk from the lighthouse, you will also pass this little cabin.

2.05
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg689.imageshack.us%2Fimg689%2F8449%2Fvillagee.jpg&hash=d9d864f376371f424c2153fb5de88dcb22400b8a)
And here we are at the village. This little place have their own guest house / Pub, church and a school.

2.06
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg688.imageshack.us%2Fimg688%2F1174%2Fvillage2.jpg&hash=2858d0384180b875a44e69e670b4a1e8e890c338)
Oh, i almost forgott : The fine harbour where fishboat dock to deliver their catch.

2.07
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg508.imageshack.us%2Fimg508%2F7451%2Fradiotower.jpg&hash=f835b7788f3510f6806ca353686f4fb1f2a9f783)
If you have some time to vaste, take a trip to the hill above the village. They say the view is excellent.

2.08
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg688.imageshack.us%2Fimg688%2F8260%2Fbridge2.jpg&hash=f26f33f7b08c3859c7efaffee8a458c654b78c4f)
On the way from the village to Mossa Town, you'll have to cross a river two times. This is the first bridge.

2.09
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg689.imageshack.us%2Fimg689%2F8823%2Fruins.jpg&hash=b8f3eb1de77af17ab2cad3cff51461052dd6d8eb)
Just above the bridge are an old ruin of a fort. It was built during the long war between Farawaystan and Evenfurtherawaystan. Ohh, that was a terrible war, with so many pixels just blown up and becoming all red.

2.10
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg59.imageshack.us%2Fimg59%2F9535%2Fruins2.jpg&hash=2bc4e32e281a6b18398d07529b9b06aac324a98a)
I'm not gonna ruin this by say anything more.

2.11
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F2286%2Fruins3.jpg&hash=f57ffdb53aa93bd136882bc2728e6e9bb4f725a3)
And this is the last picture for today. Rest of Mossa will come in a day or two.

Fabian : Thank you very much for your comments. And you are right! Its up left at the coast.
Battlecat : Thanx. Yes it mostly went well with the mosaic, besides from the top, where i had some very strange problem with the rail.
Canyonjumper : So it reminds me of Canada. I love canyons, so i guess Canada would be a nice country to travel?
Sciurus : Yes, you are right about the rail. Its the strangest thing : It dont fit! And as more i tried, the worse it got. The mosaic is from 3 large city tiles and the top dont fit with number two.
nedalezz : Thanks for you comments, i will add an overview so you can see more clear where its situated.
cott1964, Rady, riiga, sumwonyuno, Tomas Neto, TiFlo : Thank you all for your comment and for having interest in looking at this.

For you who follow this, i promised you to take you to Mossa. And thats a promise i intend to keep. Maybe not today, but at leat we're on the road again.

HURRAY!!! We are passing the first farm! A bit old tough. Do you think someone still run this farm?

2.14
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg682.imageshack.us%2Fimg682%2F5529%2Ffarm2.jpg&hash=c8ba0b0c1654ed2c8fce3fe4cda716528696f857)
A few country houses, a farm, some sheeps and a car on the road who looks like a cell phone.

Have you ever traveled at the countryside and passed a farm road and ever wondered : Where do that road goes? What is the purpose to such a rural road?
Well, what do you say? Should we take a look? YES, lets do it.

2.16
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg204.imageshack.us%2Fimg204%2F1656%2Ffarmroad1.jpg&hash=e9bdde79fba3939cd19d5c83e96ca1fdc2371224)
Ooooh, its leading in to the forrest. This sounds promising. Maybe its a secret place you can take your beloved ones to. Maybe having a pickninc at the beach to the most lovely lake. Or maybe there is an romantic old guesthouse at the end of the road who have the most.....
Ehhh... The most...
Threeless place...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg15.imageshack.us%2Fimg15%2F153%2Ffarmroad3.jpg&hash=a77afa5ac3390346700c0b3c76fc74d98b297c09)
Ok... At least we know whats up with this road. Lets get back.

2.18
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg521.imageshack.us%2Fimg521%2F8149%2Fseconbri.jpg&hash=9b69a80a68e28f6b9f7ed9594f512ab540d4f16a)
Not far from the farms are this second bridge over the river.

2.19
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg33.imageshack.us%2Fimg33%2F9937%2Fseconbri2.jpg&hash=b74a880446f36dce7368d88e8f5bb85ee66c6c48)
This is also the place two rivers come together for their personal chat.

2.20
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg39.imageshack.us%2Fimg39%2F8185%2Fotherway.jpg&hash=815381679fd2b8d8930a9a4696625551b799c373)
When crossing the bridge, this is not the way we are going. You see, this way is forbidden.
Why?
Well, thats the way to to all the things you shouldnt see. You know, the same Maxis building repeating itself houndred times. A eight floor w2w building besides a tiny little villa. $%Grinno$%

So lets just turn around and go the right direction :
2.21
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg132.imageshack.us%2Fimg132%2F163%2Fothersidem.jpg&hash=fdafcbf2504d901460fd68c006bfcc124003454f)
Yes, this is the right way. This is the way to Mossa.
But why rush it? Why do today what you can do tomorrow?

So i'll just add the overview of Mossa and i'll see you tomorrow?
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg64.imageshack.us%2Fimg64%2F3184%2Fmossa.jpg&hash=bdc30f5a21e8d0ad74ce998ca317fb3324b13a4b)

That canyon is very, very well done; I especially like the rock placement along the plopped river. The bridge is also professionally done ;)

My favorite pic of the update, though, is the overview shot of the town as it transitions from the residential zone into its industrial zone. Great job.

I have something fabolous for you taday :P
If you have seen the mosaic of Mossa, the upper part ends at the highway. Today i am going to take you even further up. Isnt it fantastic? Real amazing? Some day i might even extend the mosaic, just for the sake of braging. ()stsfd() But not today.

This is it. This is what it all starts from : A dam. Not excactly the Hoover Dam. But i am still shure its good for the community.

I might come back later for this district, as there is still many places around i havent let you see. But for next part i will go to Bonita. The second largest city in Farawaystan. You can see the city on the regionview. It is situated on a larger island in the west.

I just fell in love with that little village, lovely lovely little place.

As for the roads leading to the dam, you left no stone unturned, truly focusing in on every detail and making sure it was done right.

Great update!

Seriously, this is just amazing, the only word that comes to my mind when I see these pictures is Amazing !
I like everything you've done and used in the updates, in the last one, nice work with the smooth curves ! The interchange is aslo really nice, but you'd be better downloading the last texture mod for RHW.. because I can see some American textures at the exit way ..  ;)

Take care,

Aweome pics.
Great work with the plopable water.  That one lake in the 2nd last update look very realistic.  Love the damn too.  But after trying so hard to make everything look sooo good I 'm unsure why you choose to build a raised train bridge over the highway and to make a flat road bridge over the highway.  I think it should have been the other way around.  I may have looked alot better if you would have made the train bridge relatively flat by dipping the highway down and the road bridge should have been the hill type over the highway.  If you have the time and some patients I would love to see you give it a try and post comparisons.

Just my two cents...
Robin

art128 : Thanks for noticing the texture.
I am actually having a big mess in my plugin folder who looks to do strange things. For example, the snow in the mountains are suddently gone. I dont know why, as i havent delted anything, neither have i downloaded anything the last month. I think i will just delete my plugin folder and start downloading from scratch.
Thanks for your comment.

kbieniu7 : Thanks for your comments. You might be right about the slope. As mentioned, this junction is something i wasnt completely happy about. And if i should do something over, it might be that.

rooker1 : I appreciate your constructive feedback. I agree with your idea about the highway. When i made the highway, the rail was not included in the plan at all. It came later when i made a rail line from Victoria and north. Since it was set close to Mossa, i decided include it. I'm not shure if i would try remake it as i am already working with a completely new region. But who knows? Maybe one day...

canyonjumper : Thanks for all your reply's. How is the weather in BC? Do you think it will be an olympic with snow?

Sciurus : No, i dont spend much time playing SC anymore, but i wish :). I was unemployed for almost a year back in 2007, and much of this is from that time. Thanks for all your comment.

nedalezz, Battlecat, penguin007, sumwonyuno, RickD, Rady, marsh, Tomas Neto, SeanSC4, bat : Thank you all, i appreciate your comment and are happy this could be of any interest.

Part 3 : Bonita
Bonita is a city on the west coast. It is the second largest city in Farawaystan with about 385 000 citicens. This city had no plans from the start and is more to be considered an accident. My intention was to build a small town. But it just happen to grow more and more as i came up with more things to add.

Today i would like to start easy and just show you a few pictures of the city center.

This is maybe not the best picture to start with, as i am not at all happy with the harbour. Something is missing, theres no life and is so empty. Maybe one day i will make some chances? What do you think?

Straight from a beautiful rural are to a fantastic urban core!  Once again a great looking update!  I really like how you cities sprawl and ignore the borders, you've accomplished something very much like what I'm shooting for in the long run for my MD.  I'm looking forward to seeing what else you've got hiding in this region!
Title: Re: Far Away

Excellent pics! Where's the grid :D! The weather is sunny here in BC, and the Olympic Committee (VANOC) is trucking snow from EC Manning (http://maps.google.ca/maps/place?cid=1672650307240653847&q=manning%2Bprov.%2Bpark&hl=en) to Cypress Mountain (http://maps.google.ca/maps/place?cid=1909766622113581488&q=Cypress%2Bmountain&hl=en). Now if they had held all snowboarding events in Whistler...well, let's just say they wouldn't have to go to such extreme measures, because Whistler actually has snow!

Former recident to Lord Casper Rectangular. Now an almost functional museum.

The finance center again. And the little building at left is where you find the city council. Maybe later i'll try get a picture of that to.

3.10
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg214.imageshack.us%2Fimg214%2F3261%2Foutcent.jpg&hash=f953c9f69ceb562b98c49263c2c588eed2cb7a9e)
This is the way out of center at the northern side.

3.11
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg708.imageshack.us%2Fimg708%2F1699%2Foutcent2.jpg&hash=dabdd346669b9a209970e149c34fc16bed722a6a)
The northern side of center have also some industries.

3.12

By all means, dont think Bonita only have midle class and poorer. On the other side of center (south), you'll find the richer parts. Closer to the beach and tourist hotels. That is by the way where we will go tomorrow.

3.13
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg214.imageshack.us%2Fimg214%2F5465%2Fcanal2.jpg&hash=4b0387223bf20cf0ff1b637a00dbe15e339fa837)
Even in the rich neigboor hood, the "Well to do" havent managed to keep away from those simple midle class. There are strong powerful people working to get away those dump. They simply dont fit there anymore, and blame the growable modus for it all. It should never have been invented and an law for "plopable only" are considered.
