Dear SC4D member,
Have you ever been interested in creating working bridges for our loved game?
Thanks to the NAM team efforts, it will soon be possible to create every type of bridges and upload them as individual uploads, being compatible with the NAM.
Being myself one of the NAM members with more experience in SC4 bridge making actually ( Smoncrie, where are you ?¿? ::) ) , I have decided to support the members who want to design bridges for SC4, and modd their models so they can be used in the game.
I will explain a bit more about this in the next few days. I hope some of your will be interested in that project ;)
I won't BAT anything, but I'm certainly more than interested in such a powerfull feature
I might be interested in that. Just let me know how difficult and what to do and I will let you know if I am or not able to help out.
Piqued my interest too....will be keeping an eye on this
If the bag of goodies on this site gets any bigger, it's going to take a forklift to move it around.
My lack of BAT skills means I'll be a watcher, too- but I won't stint a bit on providing encouragement.
David
I'd Love to give it a shot. Thats how ya learn ;)
Id like and know to make a bridges at BAT, but dunno how to configure it at game...
I am glad to see that there is so much interest in this project
As stated before, I will handle the tedious modding part and leave you the pleasure of the modelling and lightning ;D
I plan to make a tutorial about the modding aspects of bridge making, but you shouldnt worry about that for the moment ;)
If you want to start heating your GMAX/3DStudio you can check the Double Deck bridges thread at Simtropolis:
http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=124&threadid=70813&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear
and the LODding tutorial here at SC4D:
http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=158.0
And until I can find the moment to post the main rules for this project, keep in mind that everything must be done using 16x16 tileable pieces. For a simple bridge only three pieces are needed, a start/end piece ( the game will mirror it), a pylon/center piece, and a repeat piece.
Lets see that virtuosism ;D
content removed cos I'm a silly sod who should read posts more thoroughly before answering :D :D I just read the bit about the modding tutorial
I can see this is not going to be easy, special for a non-batter like me, but, what about if I already had the models, like the ones bellow? Could I make something out of it? And would you be able to help me or teach me?

I would rather help on the modding part, but I assume you prefer to do that yourself, so, the only way I can help is this way.
Or if anyone more comfortable with the BAT wants to give it a try at these just let me know.
Rayden, any help you can give is welcome my friend. If you want to help modding you are welcome. I'll contact you about this.
But before we can mod anything, we need some models ready ::) , so this is going to be the priority at the moment. I will make a basic tutorial will the rules for making the models, and post it here as soon as possible.
About the models, I would prefere original models when possible. Of course they can be based on existing ones ;D
I have contacted Callagrafx about making things easier for modellers, and he will gently help us to create the right transit network textures for the bridges, so the new bridges will always fit with the existing TN textures. Thanks amigo
Ok, I'll let the originals to someone who knows how to make them. But I'll try to learn how to make that, and the only way I can do that right now, is to use those already made models.
I'll wait for your contact and try to help you out on the modding part where I'm sure I will be more confortable at.
Rayden, you can use these models as a studio basis for your own bridges. When it comes to modelling, the BAT is like a giantic and neverending LEGO ;) . Just a matter to join pieces :P
Anyway, as mentioned before, I will contact you later about the modding part.
Hi,
I was intrigued by the topic and want to offer my encouragement and appreciation to anyone who helps bring more variety and realism to game bridges.
I'm afraid I have zero batting/modding skills so I cannot provide any material help (at least for the time being). However, I am a bridge engineer in real life and would be delighted to offer any help/suggestions etc with respect to how the things look and work in real life.
Keep up the good work!
Stewart
Hello Stewart,
nice to count with your support
Feel free to post some nice pictures about bridges you like, so we can get some inspiriation ;D
I will definately read through the modding tutorial on bridges when you post it! And if I have time I may offer my services :P
Well... you piqued my interest. I don't want to promise anything before seeing the tutorial (it's always nice to know what I'm getting myself into!), but I might be up for modeling a bridge or two. I'll definitely keep an eye on this thread.
JB
Definitely count me in, at least on the modding end of things. (If anyone wants to do a bridge for the RHW mod, I'd be especially interested in helping out. ;)) Looking forward to your tutorial, Jeroni. And Stewart, it's good to have a real bridge engineer around!
-Alex (Tarkus)
I have just posted a beta version of the tutorial about making the bridge pieces here:
http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=930.msg25066#msg25066
This tutorial is subjected to revisions and further enchancements ;)
Great work Jer, I'm printing this out first thing tomorrow. I'll see how it goes during the weekend and do some training ;) I got to learn how to bat, no matter how :P Thanks for the tutorial (1st part of it).
Hi all,
I thought I would post a couple of links to websites that I consider have useful information about bridges. The structurae website is great if you know what you are looking for (i.e. you know the bridge name/type/location etc). It has an extensive database of bridges from all over the world: Structurae (http://en.structurae.de/)
The Wikipedia article has some good photographs and some great information on how different types of bridges work: Wikipedia/bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge)
Also, at the risk of sounding like I am requesting custom content, I have always been frustrated by the lack of options for light rail/elevated rail bridges. If anyone is considering making el-rail bridges they would receive the strongest appreciation from here, even if they were simply converted heavy rail bridges (if that is possible).
The tutorial looks so well put together I might even have a go at batting myself!
Stewart
p.s. Sorry if my links don't work, I am a bit of an amateur here!
Stewart, your links worked fine, and the info is really really useful.
I have just released a version of the Tsing Ma bridge, which is an old project Smoncrie and me started a loooooong time ago, and I wanted to finish somehow.
Now I am ready for new challenges ;D . A light rail bridge sounds good.
At the moment there are some issues with the textures, so I can not post them yet. I'll keep you informed.
I'm so glad more bridges are going to be made for SC4, because there is a big gap in the selection of bridges, and it starts to look weird when you have 3 Golden Gate bridges in the same city. :P
My modding and BATing skills are non-existant, so I'll just be watching this. And if you want, there are a few bridges I've seen that would look great if they were made for SC4, if you want me to post some pictures of them.
I have a problem with this bridge ...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nelspruitlink.co.za%2FSC4Bucket%2FJR%2520Klippoortjie-Bridge01.jpg&hash=c3ddaaa12e48a0ff4297dd876219d02d6088b627)
... that is all I get. :o
^^^ same here :(
Ok, I cant check what is wrong now. I will lock the file and fix that this evening.
Ok, I found the mistake and corrected it. I will upload the corrected version later this evening. I have to remake the installer ::)
File updated in the LEX.
Read the Lot Description if you already downloaded the not working version.
Ok, lets see if someone gets motivated to start his/her own bridge ;D

Very nice looking bridge Jer. I still haven't done much about it (lack of free time), but anyway I'm waiting for the modding part where I know I can be of some help, as me and the Bat we're still trying to get acquainted with each other. Also this weekend it will be impossible to do anything because I'm heading to Sierra Nevada on Friday, to catch the last snows before the season ends. I'll be back on Monday. ;)
That looks great, Jeronij! You picked a perfect setting to test it, too... or show it off? lol &apls
I've read the tutorial, but that's about it so far. I'll take a look again soon.
JB
That bridge looks great, but it seems like something is missing and I'm not sure what it is. It looks kinda thin in the middle, maybe the truss underneath needs to be thicker, if that makes any sense. Just my thoughts. ::)
Robin  &apls
I agree with rooker , the first feeling is that something is missing ... but I'm pretty sure this feeling is due to the fact it's an old style bridge with a modern looking : on an older bridge it would have more metalic crosses - trusses ? - ( sorry I don't know the exact technical word ::) ) .
However as this kind of bridges have always technical gallery for inspection and maintenance under the roadway , maybe this roadway looks a bit too thin ....
...for perfectionists . $%Grinno$%
Anyway , wonderful work ! &apls
JR I like that ... we need more full ARCHED bridges.
It has a nice simple elegance
Interested to see how you plan for it to work in different spans
Thanks to all for the feedback
I appreciate your comments. Maybe the bridge may look a bit thin in the middle in some situations, but the concrete can stand it wihout problems ::)
I am trying to keep the bridge pieces number as low as possible, (3 so far), keeping in mind the different possible situations.

I am satisfied so far, except with the view at zoom 3 ( second pic in this post), but the visual issues are due to the way I designed the bridge ( not the model)
Wow, Jeroni, that is a really nice looking bridge! Not only do I like the arch structure, but I really like the railing. Looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

Wow ... I never expected to see a whole new bridge when I opened this topic. Great job Jeroni.
very nice looking brdge Jeronij! Can't wait to see it released :)
Hmm, looking good as always, jeronij!
And thanks for the fix on the Tsing Ma Bridge, it's going to form the most important river crossing in my region. And this new one is looking great for some of my less important crossings in the north of my region.
I like it Jeronij! It is a very attractive bridge.
Whilst I agree with the comments that it looks a bit slender at midspan, your use of extra-strong concrete is noted!
If you did think about refining the model then perhaps you might consider making the arch rib marginally thicker and making the deck (roadway) a little deeper. Nevertheless I would use it in my city without any modifications, so well done &apls. I might ban heavy trucks from using it until I am satisfied your extra-strong concrete is really extra-strong though ;)
Stewart
those bridges look very nice!! i really want them i my cities!
Hey Jeronij, although I'm not much of a good modeller, I'm actually interested in making a few realistic bridges for urban areas--freeway bridge anyone?
Looks good, but I just get the feeling the actual bridge deck is a little bit thin... it could be thickened slightly.

Great¡¡, you can start reading the few posts in this Bridge Engineers Board, including the tutorial, and them start your own thread where you can show us your work in progress ;)

Hey Jeronij, would you be at all interested in rendering that bridge on the diagonal so it can be made into a lot-based bridge?

Mmmm....well...I would be interested, why not ;D ?, but it will take some time to make the composition in MAX. The bridge seen in the pic is 10 tiles long (orthogonal), so it will be shorter if we make it a fixed diagonal.
Hi everyone,
There hasn't been much activity on this thread for a while so I thought I would try to inspire some by posting suggestions for types of bridge that I think would enhance the game. These aren't requests for content, merely ideas intended to inspire members of the community thinking about making bridges.
Also, this post isn't intended to be comprehensive: it would be great to see others posting other examples of bridges that they think would enhance the game.
If anyone is inspired by any of the below, I would be happy to do any research or grunt work that might help them along.
1) Low level/city centre bridges:
There are few road bridges (maybe about 3) in the game that look 'right' in the context of a river crossing in a city centre, so we would really benefit from some more options in this department. Here are two ideas:
Waterloo bridge in London is a good example of a 'modern' arch bridge. (link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waterloo_Bridge))
Blackfriars bridge in London is a good example of a Victorian wrought iron bridge. (link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackfriars_Bridge))
2) Variations on the cable-stayed bridge:
The 'in-game' bridge is a cable-stayed bridge with diamond-shaped pylons and a single plane of cables. However there are a number of different variations on that theme related to the configuration of the pylons (towers) and the stays (cables).
i) I or H shaped pylons with two planes of stays, such as the Second Severn Crossing in the UK (link (http://en.structurae.de/photos/index.cfm?JS=16826)) or the Øresund Link between Denmark and Sweden (link (http://en.structurae.de/photos/index.cfm?JS=33628)).
ii) Diamond shaped pylons with two planes of stays, such as the William H Natcher bridge in Kentucky (link (http://www.kentuckyroads.com/natcher_bridge/)) or the Vancouver Skybridge in Canada (link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skybridge_%28Vancouver%29)).
iii) I-shaped pylons with a single plane of stays, such as the Centenario bridge in Panama (link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Centenario1.jpg)) or the Sunshine Skyway bridge in Florida (link (http://en.structurae.de/photos/index.cfm?JS=53136)). (The Millau bridge model released about six months ago on the various exchanges fits this set)
There are further variations on the theme, particularly those with a single pylon, but I have endeavoured to keep this post manageable.
3) Movable bridges:
I realise that (to the best of my limited knowledge of game mechanics) it isn't possible to make bridges that actually move (save for Peg's lot-based set). However, when placing low-level bridges across a river in the centre of a city the in-game (and NAM) bridges can look like they wouldn't allow passage of river traffic. Cities like Chicago have a number of these bridges, and my thinking is that it would be nice to have bridges that look like they can open for river traffic even if they can't. This type of bridge would also be extremely useful for entrances to harbours etc.
This website (link (http://www.historicbridges.org/b_c_il_cook.htm)) has an extensive summary of bridges in Chicago.
This New York government document (link (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/pdf/harlemrvbdrpt.pdf)) has a summary of bridges on the Harlem river, and the Wikipedia article (link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_crossings_of_the_Harlem_River)) also has some information.
I hope this post inspires a few SimCity bridge engineers. Please let me know if I can help in any way.
Stewart
Hello s-g, thanks for the explanation and the useful links. I am trying to finish a trestle bridge at the moment, but I know where to go when I want to start a new one ;)
jeronij (or anyone else who would be interested). After looking through the pages here (and after having completed a road trip around the western US) I would be more than willing to assist in any way I can. My BAT skills are more or less non-existent (though if someone could tell me where I might get ahold of it I might be able to pick it up as I go...you do have to start somewhere after all) but I am happy to learn and do what I can to help increase the number of available bridges out there.
Thanks for your offer threestooges  . Greatly appreciated ;)
Actually the basic need for this project are modellers, because without bridges, there is nothing to mod ::) . However, I hope that sometime in the short future, some modellers will be interested in making some nice custom bridges, and then any help with the modding will be greatly appreciated. ( Rayden I dont forget you ;D )
If you want, in the meantime, start to model something with the BAT, this is a great place to start:
http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=140&threadid=78721&enterthread=y
Again thanks to all the members who are supporting this project
Thank you very much for the quick reply, and all of the information you have provided. I have picked up some great tips from the link you provided. At the moment, I am currently working on a replica of a lift bridge (known locally as the "Steel Bridge") in Portland, Oregon. I do have a few questions regarding bridges and the BAT:
-Regarding the surface that the road texture is placed on: does that need to be at z=0? What determines the road level (above the ground)?
-Regarding bridge orientation for exporting: How should it be placed (with the piece centered at 0,0,0 or with a corner set at 0,0,0)?
Thank you again for the opportunity to work on a project like this, and also for maintaining such a great site.
Hello again,
some quick answers:
1) For a standard bridge yes. deck level = 0 The real (above the ground) height is managed by the .exe
2) For rendering, the center of each piece should be at x=0, y=0 (z depends on the model, but as mentioned in point 1, the deck must be at z=0)
I hope to see some pictures soon .... ;D
Hey, I was working on a bridge forever ago, but gave up, after I was ignored somewhere else, I'm not complaining though. Anyways, will you take just the models? I am not sure where I am at anymore. I can send you the unrendered models if you would like. I was planing on it being a rail bridge.
-Charile
Charlie,
Can you post some pictures of your model ?¿ I`d like to see what we are talking about ;)
Btw, I have slightly edited your post. Remember the site rules pls ::)
Heh, it's been a while since I have been really (or semi) active in this community. I have been kind of interested in making bridges as of late (like I was supposed to a year and a half ago...). So, what do I need to do? :)
It would be great to see some bridges from you DT ¡¡¡
You can start reading and following the Begginers Tutorial:
http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=930.0
Then you can start your model, and open a thread in this board so we can follow the development, and you can request for help if necessary ;)
I hope to see some progress soon ;D
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction! I'll start puttering around with bridge experiments, and we'll see where that leads us. :P
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimgcash1.imageshack.us%2FHimg140%2Fscaled.php%3Fserver%3D140%26amp%3Bfilename%3Drailbridgejx7.jpg%26amp%3Bxsize%3D640%26amp%3Bysize%3D480&hash=17c5b3f155aa06aa89e059f827daee7e0c9c4a62)
Okay there's what I have. I am not sure what else needs to be done, I would look at tutorial, but the last time I worked on the bridge was forever ago, well I will still check it out. Sorry about the bad post... It is broken down into 16x16 pieces, and I didn't insert the transit texture yet. It is going to be a rail bridge.
Good work so far
What I miss in this picture is the center piece. The one with the support. It has to be also 16*16 ;)
Also, you could add some sort of artificial floor to the start/end pieces. Some cement foundations. They can be several meters long to the -z axis of the model. This is not strictly necessary thoug ;D
I wanted to get a bit of feedback (and some suggestions too if possible) regarding what I've done so far. I am attempting to make a lifting bridge similar to the "Steel Bridge" in Portland Oregon (but not trying to recreate it). Also, I have a question regarding LODs that goes beyond what was mentioned in your tutorial:
-As I understand, an LOD is what shows up in the game (correct me if I am wrong). Is it necessary then to make a copy of every piece of the model, just the big parts, or just a single piece?
-Do you have any recommendations for making realistic looks bridge abutments (or do you think a bridge like this necessarily need them)?
Please let me know what you think:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg472.imageshack.us%2Fimg472%2F4501%2Ftowerpreviewnu0.jpg&hash=8c92ad5299260c36cd0ced95094fd0de21b1a593)
Okay... So, I looked, I guess my center pieces aren't exactly 16x16, is there a way to change that with out rebuilding them? I think I can do it by scaling them up a little, right? I am not sure so much about end pieces... On what I've got what do you think might look fine? I attempted something, probably not what we're looking for though, well I will let you have a look.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg442.imageshack.us%2Fimg442%2F8922%2Fsupportyf2.jpg&hash=8cbe5fa9621c6f2299aa926dc67d17be43294e99)

and the current end piece, I think it's going to need some work isn't it? As I look at it, it definitely is, not sure what it needs though... Maybe concrete sloping between the first support, and the ground. I'm thinking I got something that'll work, I just got to try it out, and upload.
threestooges , your model is looking nicely detailed so far
About the LODs question, you must try to keep them as simple as posible. If you can cover(LOD) your bridge with only one box, dont cover it with two ;) .However, for the bridge piece you show, you will need some semi-complex LODs... ::) ( If you have problems, you can send me the models and I can try to LOD them )
S CoD, the repeat (center) pieces must be 16 meters long. Not necesarily 16*16 meters as I stated in my previous post :-[ . If the support is wider that the bridge deck, it is not a problem ;)
About the model itself, you are right, it needs something.... after you add the concrete base, you could start working a bit with the wood texture, it looks too uniform. You can also add some details to the deck, like guardrails or protection walls/fences. Also, the wood pieces that form the supports look a bit too "fat".... $%Grinno$% .... Especially the center girdes, which are twice widers that the exterior ones ;) Just some suggestions ;)
Godd work everybody, I am glad to see some fresh bridges coming to the reallity
Alright, I will work on that when I get some time. RL I made the center supports wider than the outside ones with next one in mind, if that makes sense. So that when the two end posts come together they are as thick as the middle ones. Am I making any sense? So change the textures, lengthen the center pieces, add some more detail over all, and make a good end piece, right? I will work on all that as soon as I find some time. I am out of school right for the summer, but we are trying to get our house on the market, so I got some work to do or my parents won't be to happy... lol
Dont worry and take your time ;D
I hate to bother you with something like this, but, since this is my first model I would like to see what a proper LOD looks like (before messing around with one by myself). If you could do the one for the model I showed, I would be happy to finish the other pieces. Just let me know what the best way is to get the file to you, and thank you again for your offer.
I change the texture and made it darker. I like it, I am content with the way the support looks, I tried some stuff with it, but I like it the way it is. The center piece I still have some work to do, I haven't quite got to it yet. Also the end piece, I worked on it some but I didn't like what I did because it looked bad, so I didn't save it. But I am not giving up on it. I need to go find some inspiration for it.

threestooges: http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=158.0 ;)
S CoD, again I say no rush ;D
I know the topic says "engineers needed" but I know you don't need me popping back in every second (he he). I did the whole rendering process and followed the tutorial (I think) exactly, especially the part that said to follow it very carefully. I dl'ed the bridge test zip file and tried putting it in the plugins folder (and also in the exemplars folder after re-reading the last part of your first post) along with the bridge models. For whatever reason, I can't get anything to show up in game. I have the NAM installed and the updated essentials file too. Is there a trick to it that I missed (or something subtle)? Again, sorry to be a pain with all these questions, I hope it's not too irritating. Have a good day.
-edit: I poked around a few threads (fukuda's in particular) and am able to get the Krummbach bridge working and the "test bridge" you included with your tutorial (it shows up as an interesting model with curved supports...and is under the street bridge menu. I can provide a pic if that description was unclear) but cannot get the bridge models I rendered to show.
Let me check the test bridge file and how it should be installed ;)
I`ll tell you something this evening once I finish my work ::)
hi, all
jeronij,
great thread, and let me just begin by saying that i love your uploads, and i've enjoyed all of them from the STEX.
anyway, i'm trying to see if i can get my money's worth outta this machine i bought, and was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. i can't seem to get the sc4 website to give me access to the BAT so i can dl it, but i believe i can use still other programs to make content for the game, no? if so, what do you recommend? 3d max, right? anyway, i'm a total noob to this stuff, though irl i'm pretty good in the art department with my own hands sans mouse; and with such a bent, you definitely caught my attention with such forward and free invitation to help making bridges. as soon as i saw your Tsing-Ma Bridge, i shouted for joy inside, and knew i'd found a gem. i've been downloading your creations and others on the STEX for ages, and it's high time i learn how to make my own stuff--especially since the next "real simcity" probbly won't be out for years to come.
so, please, i'd like to learn from you whatever i can about making bridges and whatnot to contribute to the community.
cheers!
Hi Surdanis,
The BAT can be found here: http://simcity.ea.com/coolstuff/bat/index.php you will need all of the fixes and stuff too.
GMax, which is the program that the BAT is an addon for can be found here: http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax
Hoping to see another new BATter soon!
Fred
Jeronij:
Hope everything is going well for you. I have since made progress on another bridge that I am going to try to make work in place of the other (just in case that will have any effect) and I thought I would show it here to get some feedback if anyone has any to offer. Its final iteration will be a rail bridge and is modelled after the Howe Truss as described Here (http://www.girr.org/girr/tips/tips2/howe_truss.html).

These files will be soon available at the LEX. In the meantime, you could find them at simcities.com , in the downloads section.
You can also use the 3DStudio Max to create custom content, but you will need the original BAT tool, and the BAT4MAX mod as well.

What do you exactly mean ?. The NAM bridges?, or the single bridges available in the LEX ?¿ Can you be more specific please ?

I am sorry but finally I didn't find the time to check the example bridge mod file... :-[ I will try to do it as soon as possible, but RL is hitting me hard these last weeks ::) I will keep you informed ;D
Don't worry about me. I'll keep myself busy improving the models. With all you seem to have to do (both rl and around here) it's impressive you have time to do it all as it is. If I knew how to do it, I would look through it myself, but don't worry about it. Take your time. Take it easy, and I hope your son (and your family) are doing well.

This is all I have done lately. It's the end piece. Is that good? It has the new texture I am using on it. Well, I'll be awaiting input.
-Charlie
Hello Charlie,
I am not sure about the start/end piece...I mean, I am not sure about how it would look like in some sitatuations in the game...
I think we need a test render from the models, to test them in game before we consider them finished. Please, tell me how many pieces you will need for a render:
start piece 2 tiles long (1 ID)
repeat piece 1 tile long (1 ID)
center piece 1 tile long (1 ID)
three ID... is this OK?
If so, I'll PM you the ID you must use for this one ;)
Well that's kind of what I was thinking. I think that it's okay if the support pieces just go into the wall that the bridge is built on. Does that make sense? So if the bridge is built on a slope, the support pieces gradually come out of the ground as needed. I don't think I am making much sense. What I am saying is I would like to scrap the end/beginning pieces. Let me see if I can show you what I mean... hmm... Let me think, okay. So the end piece is the same as the support. So it looks like
_______________________________________________________
\xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/
\xxxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxxx/
\xxxxxx xxxxxx xxxxxx/
\xxxx xxxxxx xxxx/
That doesn't quite make sense does it? I really need to spend more time working on it. What I am going for is an old wooden rail bridge, something simple. Maybe that helps. I hope it does. Simplicity is what I am looking for.
-Charlie
You can make some testing with some of the existing bridges, including the custom ones, so you can see how the different start/end piece designs work in the game. This will make your decition easier ;)
Well I got things to be the way I like them, but I can't export... I keep getting error code=6 or something like that. I am not sure why. I was going to try what I have so far using your test bridge from your tutorial, but I can't export it to try. So I am kind of in trouble with that. What I am thinking I want to do, unless it would be easier to export with, is add anything other than the bridge structure itself the T21 way, but I am not sure I even want to add anything, as I said I want it to be simple. Maybe I could send you the files I have. Let me know and I can send them to you. I think I might try start a new model, but first I want to get some inspiration. So just let me know, and I can send you the files.
-Charlie
Did you try merging the model ( only the geometry and shapes) in a whole new scene ? . This could solve the rendering problems.... ::)
Hoever, if you want me to have a look to the files, upload them somewhere, and send me a link via PM ;)
Alright, well I will try one last time, and then if it doesn't work I will find a place to upload them, and get you a link. You said before to play with the bridges and some of the custom bridges, well I discovered I have an issue, but I am not sure what. So I have downloaded most of the bridges off the lex, and the only ones that work are the ones that were included in the NAM. I tried downloading the NAM essentials file, and reinstalling the bridge controller a number of times, but they still don't work. Any suggestions there?
-Charlie
may i make a request, theirs this one bridge that was proposed to cross the Strait of Gibraltar (between Europe and Africa) and it looks so cool . "The suspension cables for these longest bridges are suspended from the ends of cable-stayed struts extending diagonally from huge pylons."

Do you have any more pictures?

I have seen this in a TV report.... I even started a bridge inspired by this one called Capital Bridge.... however, it did not went to a good end.... ::)
SCoD, make sure you have only the NAM bridges controller file, the one included in the last NAM release ( june 07). This one is designed to work with all the existing bridges. Pay attention to some of Fukuda's bridges, which may still include an outdated controller file....
heres an old pic; but do you get the concept "$Deal"$

There are four projects abou the Strait of Gibraltar:
1. suspension bridge
2. Gigantic dam
3. Tunnel
4. An unbelievable project of floating bridge (floating island and 2 floating tunnels connecting it with the shores

Only the island here
I also found very interesting site (http://www.makingthemodernworld.org.uk/)
There are a lot of interesting things on it, also many bridges (Gateshead ;) and many others)
Yeah I searched for some pics, but no luck. I did find the thing about the floating bridge, which would supposedly be able to power all of Moroco, and some place in Spain, and pay for itself that way, and by tourism. So jeronij is the bridge controller on the LEX not the one I need? I also looked at the Google Earth pic, and it is completely not to scale, or if it is it looks extremely funny. lol Well, I was working on a little something... I am going to have questions soon...
-Charlie
Okay, well here's what I've got:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg509.imageshack.us%2Fimg509%2F1235%2Fgibraltarbridgedb3.jpg&hash=2b7d757b958fc959627e7f55f9f88de3294eddb8) (http://img509.imageshack.us/img509/1235/gibraltarbridgedb3.jpg)
It obviously is not the finished product, I actually have only been working on the support piece. It still is missing a few details and needs texturing. I just slapped that together to give you guys a preview. I would like some C&C, complements and criticism.

not realy what i was thinking of, but good work ;)
Not that bad... but can be improved ;)
You dont need to add these suspension wires, they will be added by the game ;)
The diagonal supports should be made into a single piece, and their suspension cables should be modelled ( those can not be added by the game engine)
I also think all the pieces should be at least twice bigger for such an intercontinental bridge.
Other than this, the shape looks great so far ;D
Btw, what about the pylons for the column pieces... ? and did you made some work with the start/end piece ::) ?
lol You're going to try and get me with those start/end pieces every time aren't you? lol Well, I actually do know what I am going to do with those, just got to put a little more thought into it. The thing about the suspension cables, I already knew that the game puts them together, I just added them for the sake of getting a picture of what it will look like. One question about them though, do I need to model them, and render them separately? Diagonal supports need to be made into one piece...? I am not sure what you mean, I do get the part about adding the cables to those. One last thing pylons for column pieces meaning? Sorry for all the questions, I haven't looked at it for a couple days.
Willvette... lol What exactly were you thinking of? I could try and bring it closer to what you asked for, however I don't have much to go by... lol I tried to stay as close to as what I saw in your picture as possible, however it wasn't all that easy, not having much to go by. Well, let me know more about your specifications.
Oh... Jeronij, I just noticed you said I should make all the pieces twice as big sense it's an intercontinental bridge... How much bigger? The support pieces are already 4 wide, by 10 (Ithink 10, I will have to check) long. I can make them bigger I supposed, not quite sure how, but if I do so I might be sending this one to you too for rendering. I must admit I tried to make it like 400x1000 tiles to begin with... lol I didn't realize the scale until I started to render the first time, so I started over. lol I wasn't that far anyways, and it was only a preview. Okay, I am going to work on the start/end pieces.
-Charlie
what Jeronij said was on the money Sir Charles &Thk/(
Ahh... Well then that's good. Makes things lots easier. lol I am working on the start/end pieces right now, I am going to need to find some inspiration I think. ;) Maybe you have some suggestions?
-Charlie
@Sir Charles of Dunlap:
Of course the intercontinental bridge must be really huge. But you must have regard to the big city tile size. If you want to see how it can look, try to build the biggest one existing in sc4 - Akashi bridge in the large city with the wide strait (about 80% of the city size). Jeronij said all pieces should be at least twice bigger than other bridges. But in my opinion they can be only slightly bigger than Akashi, larger bridge will look oversized.
You should also remember you must have some land in your city. Large bridge connecting two small pieces of land will look ugly, and if you will build your bridge in the widest place of the strait, it will be unrealistic.
But I think the project similar to willvette's pictures is very original and can look great in sc4 , also if it will have pieces as big as Akashi or about 1,2x bigger
Of course it's only my opinion, but I've already built some large bridges in my new region and I see how they look. :)
Just for your interest and reference, the real life main span of the Akashi Kaikyo bridge is 1991 metres (that's between the towers, not the overall length). The planned Messina bridge (Italy to Sicily) was to have a main span of about 3,300 metres. Not sure how viable this strait of Gibraltar bridge would be in real life, but I admire your conviction for wanting to model something this massive!
Stewart
looking at the gibralta bridge, its one i was conteplating modelling as well.... but a couple of questions came to mind, is it possible to have the split in the roadway as with the real thing, like for instance if it used the RHW6, is that even possible? sencondly are the peices allowed to be wider than the network itself... just look at the gibralta bridge picture... note the stairs on the side of the column.... i dont know exactly how big yours is sir charles but i am curious as to your measurements...
Ok, I will try to explain how to take the measure for such a bridge, using some pictures I made for you:
A top view on a bridge design:
You must study carefully this picture, because it shows the areas that can be used for modelling, and those which dont.
Turning this into 3D, and just to show you the idea, these were the useable areas for the models for the start/end and center pieces.
In fact the boxes that you can see in this picture, are very similar to the final LOD for this bridge, but I would make them twice taller for such a intercontinental bridge.
This is another variation, using some more lenght to the -Z
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/images/jrj/bridges/jrj_taking_measures03.jpg)
In both cases, we would use overhanging props for both pieces, but a single model for each one ( the start end and the towers/center pieces) for the sake of simplicity.
I hope you get the idea ;)
Okay... I see now what you guys are saying, bigger is better. I like that, I too would like to have a mega bridge in my city. One problem, you guys have been suggesting I play with the custom bridges in the game, but I can't get them to work, I can get the ones that were included with the January NAM to work but nothing else. I have tried a few different things but they haven't worked, it's probably the fact that I have the old ones in there. Well I will try to get them to work so I can check them out. In the mean time, any batters out there who know their way through BAT very well, is there a way for me to expand the pieces to exact dimensions, or only in certain directions (stretch). I know there is the scale tool but I don't like using it because it throws everything off.
-Charlie
Of course the above bridge design is just an idea.
The start/end piece can have different lengths. 2x1, 2x2, 2x3, 2x4...
The center/column piece too: 2x1, 2x2, 2x3
However, the smaller the pieces are, the best, to avoid graphic glitches ;D
Oh, well, I did find a way to make the piece I have bigger in the ways it needs to be.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg404.imageshack.us%2Fimg404%2F504%2Fgibraltarbridge02ea5.jpg&hash=a734083d1b1b9d4a88070cf44f1d0f0e856151b5)
How is that for size? I am going to add light towers on the top, anything special for adding the lights that I need to know about? Okay, so I think once I make the start/end piece I will be done with the major work on this bridge. Then I will need to add all the little details. Dang, this isn't as easy as I thought. lol Oh Jeronij, have you had time to play with my other model?
-Charlie
ok so we can only use 8m either side of the deck tiles... and the rest would have to be overhanging props... ok im with you.
Well, theoretically, it should be possible to have bridges wider than 16/32m, it just involves a helluva lot of cheating with the model. Here's what I think could be possible - the model itself could be three tiles wide, but only one tile is the deck - the extra two tiles would be the er, ornamentation... :P
see realisticially for the gibralta you are looking at 3 tile wide roadway to accomodate gap in middle, it would be your standard highway, i think the RHW6 would be cool. then your looknig at like 2 tiles each side for those supports... so 7 tile wide bridge with three tile roadway.... im assuming that is totally impossible.
I dont think we can build the Gibraltar bridge at something remotely similar to real scale. We are limited by the game. The actual wider bridges are 32 meters wide. This is the logical limit. We can exceed it a little bit, as showed in the pictures, but that's all ::) More that this will create way too many graphic glitches with the automata $%Grinno$%
ok
More on this,
the width of the bridges is set in the bridge exemplar. Theorically we could build any width ( always SC4 tiles) bridge. However, nobody has accomplished a more than 2 tiles width bridge so far. The first thing that comes to my mind is that the wider transit network is 2 tiles, so something like puzzle pieces or transit enabled lots would be needed to be able to build such a bridge.
This could be a good challenge for some modder with time and willness.... who knows?, that it does not exist does not mean that it can not exist ::) ;)
a scaled down version would look better, if you recall, i requested a long highway bridge and a med. monorail/HSRP bridge
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimgcash2.imageshack.us%2Fimg218%2F853%2Fgibraltarbridge03pf1.jpg&hash=dac76a223565025f146aa9d37c0d8bd4f3097f59)
How is that for detail? I added cables, two light towers on top (for planes to see) I added a foundation, did some texturing, and added a maitinence entrance. Well, I just noticed something I forgot to size down, but unless there is anything I have to change I am done with the support. Well, it does need road lighting, and okay, so I have three things on it. lol 1. lighting on the deck 2. rescale one support thing, see middle of support, down one from the top. 3. wait was there a three? lol The bridge deck for the rest of the bridge will be the same as there. Hmm... Now for the end/start piece. I started a couple different ideas, but trashed them, they sucked. I am not quite sure what to do, because I don't want the foundation to be under water, but if it isn't the deck will be 40 meters or so above the water, I am thinking elevated highway bridge, and the endpiece will have to slope down, which is possible right? I would assume so sense there is a raised road bridge in the game.
-Charlie
Generally I like your present work very much. But I would like to make one suggestion:
You should think about these diagonal cable-stayed struts. They are not used on smaller bridges. What is their function? I am not a bridge engineer, but I make some work on large steel and conctrete structures. I think these struts are needed to precisely adjusting the stretch of main suspension cables and to give them the proper stress pattern. I can imagine these struts don't need to pull the main cable - they can suspend it to chang the cable curve. The second reason of use such solution: the pylon with suspended cable is much more stable. The third reason: engineers can adjust the length of struts to extinguish vibrations caused by wind, traffic, earthquake etc. especially the resonance.
What is the conclusion from the sc4 point of view? Look at the picture below
Quote from: willvette on July 22, 2007, 02:07:26 PM

I would like to request a large version for ground and raised highway and a small version for monorail/HSRP, Plz
And make somethhing similar. Struts should be a bit more massive ( but they are wider at the pylon and narrowed at the end - so they look light) and they should suspend main cables.
I suggest you to draw main cables first and then adjust the length and angle of cable-stayed struts to the curve of main cables.
Sorry for bad english, it was hard for me to explain it.
Thanks for that explanation Ennedi. I totally agree
SirCharles, you can also check this thread:
http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=124&threadid=70813&highlight_key=y&keyword1=double%20decker and have a look to the pictures from the Tsing Ma bridge.... specially the towers... this is the level of detail I like the most ;D
I must admit that I am a bridge engineer (I know, I know, it is a terrible affliction...) and I am stumped as to the function of the diagonal 'struts'. However, if this is what Charlie wants to make then it is up to him...
Stewart
sir charles... if yours is meant to be a scaled down version then your model is fundamentally wrong.... look at the render... look at the far tower...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi193.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fz124%2Fmightygoose_2007%2Fbridgemodelshape.jpg&hash=bf9c85170b772d7ddd16caa0f1bcfc76dfdfd7eb)
as you can see there is only one diagonal strut... not two.... as to the reasoning of their existence is it not to take some of the vertical load from gravtiy and using it as a pivoted symmetrical horizontal brace to suspend the cables further.
speaking of cables sir charles.. it als helps if your cable arrangements are symmetrical on either side of the tower.... just a thing i noticed.
btw thats rougly a full sized model... seven tiles wide, roadway for RHW6, the diagonal strut total span one side to other is 480m.... height of towers around 320m and the water is a medium city tile :P
anyway i just thought id illustrate the major structural layout of this bridge, i know the proportions arent quite there, the real one being taller with longer struts.. the cabling i could demonstrate as well i spose....
oh and btw did a bit of digging it seems someone has already modelled the original version for flight sim...

Interesting article about the Gibraltar bridge Mightygoose - thanks for the link. It seems the intention would be to reduce the span of the suspension cables, hence reducing the required size. Not sure how viable this would be in real life tough...
Stewart
Wow... I think I am finally catching on, and just when I was about to ask what the struts were... Hmm... So I have made to conclusions from this, 1. I am going to be spending a little time with the model making it more Gibraltarish, and 2. I am going to need to study engineering before finishing this project. lol Well not really, but come on you engineers you I am only in highschool give me a break. lol But having more pictures to go by does make things much easier. Thanks guys, I will try, ok will make things better. It might be a little while before I am back, but probably not as long as I think...

Thanks for these great pictures and detailed information mightygoose  These pictures are really nice, and shows the right dimensions for such a beast ::)

Yes, it is very favourable circumstance :D
But it is very good that sc4 creators try to think in logical way and make realistic objects. I think sc4 could be a great place to show some extraordinary engineering projects - existing and planned. Some of projected ultra-modern structures need completely new building materials and must wait a few years. But it is an excellent thing to see somebody's vision how it could look in real world.
This bridge is definitely worth to show. There are some interesting small and middle-sized bridges (such as Gateshead), but large suspension bridges look similar. This one is completely different. I said it earlier, but I repeat: it doesn't need to be larger than Akashi. Maybe it can have higher pylons, but having the same size it will look more massive because of these "struts".
@Mightygoose, you made great addition to this thread!
Jeroni, Ennedi,
I completely agree with both of your posts! It is nice to strive for reality but it is also fantastic that SC4 allows us to imagine and build things that are not (yet) possible in real life.
I am, as ever, amazed at, and hugely appreciative of, anyone who makes custom content for this game and those who give up their free time to manage this site. &apls

Okay... Sorry guys but I don't know if I will be able to finish this right now. School starts pretty soon (in a week or 2), and I haven't actually played the game that much this summer. lol That and I need to start getting focused again. So, I am thinking I will put this on hold and work on it with the spare time I find on the weekends and stuff. I won't forget about it, it just won't be a priority. I am curious as to the status of the bridge I sent you Jeronij, I just was wondering if you have had time for it yet?
-Charlie
SCoD, I am more or less in your same situation ( I mean lack of time and not being on holidays $%Grinno$% ) and I havent had the time to have a look to it. I have the package in my desktop, so I dont forget about it, but I'll have to find the time ::)
Alright sounds good. So PM me whenever you get time for it. I won't hold it against you if you never get time. lol Well, for now it's back to lurker mode, unless something is just so cool I can't resist saying something. lol Maybe I shouldn't lurk.

Well, I have gotten some more time, and have figured out some bugs that were plaguing me earlier (I wish I took a pic of it, but I was getting a bridge resembling some of Escher's (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M._C._Escher) work). However, I have since redone some work, and would like to get some feedback on a new bridge I just tested. The design I plan on is appx 1 pillar with 3 regular pieces in between, so please keep that in mind when viewing the thickness of the pillars (it just worked out this way with the test file). I do have one question though: does the top of the bridge base need to be at zero? Or will that result in the automata showing up like in the pic?
A steel girder rail bridge:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg212.imageshack.us%2Fimg212%2F8145%2Fsteelgirderbridgetestex4.jpg&hash=787e600ae474e1eb77ab0bf8de7c2a91accc86f3)
The surface of the network needs to be at 0 meters. You can have sidewalls that extend above the network surface on the sides so you can have guardrails. The pillars and understructure have to be below the 0 meter height. You also need custom-shaped LODs so you can see the vehicles on the surface of the bridge deck and so the pillars appear properly at the water line.

Hello 3stooges,
it is great to see a new model on the way  ¡¡¡
I'd point you to the primary source for SC4 bridge making, started by Smoncrie ( where are you %confuso ::) ) , where you can see how a bridge was developed from start to end, and where most of your questions will find an answer:
Double Deck Bridge Experiment (http://sc4devotion.com//http://www.simtropolis.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=124&threadid=70813&highlight_key=y&keyword1=double%20deck)
I hope this helps ;)
Also thanks Swamper77 for your always precise and useful information
Btw, the pilars for this bridge look too "fat"... I'd make them thiner.... ;)
I have some crappy models, can someone play with it, and get it in SC4?

Our very own Ryan (filasimo) too advantage of the fact that I felt like modeling alot tonight and connived me into making a basic causeway bridge model :p
Now I have no clue whatsoever how to texture in 3ds max 7.00 and will find out tomorrow when my 3ds max advice man (glenni yay :P) tells me how. But until then any suggestions for the small piece? Ive also constructed an end piece but it looks much the same.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi38.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fe130%2Fyoman3%2FBridgeCauseway.jpg&hash=c99a377a90c534d6333646f3de9bbffba4d7ea67)
The dimensions on the piece are 16x16 and 16.9 tall (thats above Z = 0.0, it extends almost 200 downwards so that people can make the bridge high if they really must even though its not intended for that at all).
EDIT NEW PIC

from the behind the scenes pics ya showed me this bridge has high potential simple yet great design....i cant wait to see this in game and more development....hehe you make me sound like a sly fox :D in case u guys dont know that bridge style its the design style for the lake ponchartrain causeway
Hello Yoman, nice design so far  ¡¡¡ It is a nice looking neutral bridge. It could be used for many different networks ;)
The bridge deck (where the cars run) must be at Z=0 for everything to work. You can find some network textures attached to the Making a bridge tutorial in this board. I hope some of they can be useful for you.
Thanks Jeronij, I've moved everything around and now the road deck is indeed at Z = 0.0, those textures should prove very useful like the tutorial was once I figure out how to apply them :P

And I think even the Chesapeake Bridge-Tunnel bridge portion is in that fashion. Its a real common design, hopefully this finds its way to be a GLR bridge....... :)
It is indeed the type of design that all 3 of those bridges use, and many more. Ive textured the bridge (though not extremely accurately like the RL bridges, but this is my own variation with glenni's textures.
The pieces remain 16x16 but I couldn't help arraying them and putting water underneath :P

And I'd love to offer the model for a GLR bridge if thats possible?
I'll work on the LODs and texture the end piece tomorrow, but after that would anyone consider Modding this into a dragable bridge?

There isnt a bridge for GLR, but why not make the first one ?. However, you will have to texture it accordingly ;) . You can render two versions if you want.

Just popped in to see what's new in here. Gunkid, nifty bridge. I never thought of making one that was broken for the game, but I can see the potential for it.
-Yoman: that causeway looks great. I hope it gets integrated into the game. A good, basic bridge is always a plus.

Are you from Louisiana? 'cause that's also the design for the Twin Span between New Orleans and Slidell and I-55 on the western edge of Ponchartrain AND I-10 over the Atchafayla Swamp west of Baton Rogue.
Yoman, great looking bridge design. Its something that's missing from the game. I hope that someday RHW draggable bridge overrides will be figured out and that this bridge will be an option.
Cheers,
Kevin
@ Bigslark: Im from good ole Nashville, TN and i used to live in Houston,TX but when I would travel to and from to visit my relatives and also when i would visit my parents when I was in Houston, I would travel down I-10 and I would love when i get to the Atchafalaya Freeway Bridge! I shouldve corrected my comment and said that that bridge style is fairly common in Louisiana. But yeah its always interesting to drive on the interstates in Louisiana! :)

What about Tower Bridge in London?
I can't see what a center/support piece would be since the bridge is of a fixed length.
London Bridge (http://www.londonbyclick.com/imgallery/tower_bridge/Tower-Bridge.jpg)
Anyway, I was supposed to have this done a few months ago, but a certain someone never came through with it...(he who shall remain unnamed...)
It is a modern bridge type thingy, with blue structural members.
Here is a prototype rendering of all the parts combined, and all that good stuff:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg210.imageshack.us%2Fimg210%2F8994%2Fbridgednwd4.jpg&hash=4af1851e697a9597881c6f14bcbe7e1a6f3ba2d9)
So, what do I do with it now? How do I get it made into a functional bridge? :P
Yeah, very "Dusktrooper" looking model. I like it
If you followed the tutorial to make it, simply send me the three pieces. If you are not sure how to cut and LOD them (you shouldnt because it is explained in the tuto ;D ), send me the model so I'll do this task.
Once we have the rendered separated pieces, the mod will be a piece of cake ::)
Before you render anything, send me a PM when you are ready and I will tell you which ID should be assigned to this beauty. I dont have access to these data right now.
Very nice bridge DuskTrooper. It's good to see you doing somethings again.

Any tutorial about the modding part of bridges? I have already read the modelling tutorial.
I want to make a bridge like this (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=2524.0).
And of course I'm requesting a set o TGI IDs.
There is actually no modding tutorial yet, I am on it, but since you are an inquiring mind ;) , feel free to open my Old Railroad Bridge mod, and check the exemplar file for the bridge. Most of the properties are selfexplaining ;D
SC4 Bridges posibilities are quite limited, and all the bridges are composed by three pieces, which must be symetrical. The pieces are start/end piece, repeat piece and support piece. These pieces can be composed with one or more models, ( the models must be cutted into 16 meters lenght pieces, regardless of the dimensions of the pieces ) but for your model you need only three models, one per piece. Unfortunately there is no way to limit the longest span for a bridge in the game, so support pieces are a must.
Once you are ready for the render, send me a PM and I will send you the ID's. If you are not interested in the modding part, simply send me the model ( with the textures) so I can cut and modd it myself ;)
I basically have all the parts separated and whatever, according to some instructions someone gave me a long time ago. Now what? :P How do I get them to you?
You can pack the models with the textures and send them to me for the modding. Just in case some minor adjustements are necessary. Once everything is ok, I will send you all the files for the final render. Btw, which software are you using? GMAX or MAX ?
Btw, about the lamps, do you want them as separated working lights ,or only nightlights ?. Separated props would make them useable for more people / bridges , but is also requires more work ::)
I am using GMAX. Haven't bothered with 3DS max that much, and I find the whole rendering thing a tad difficult to deal with.
As for the lamps, they're built in; it would probably be easier to make em integrated, like you said. Besides, they probably would not look optimal out of their element, anyway.
So, if you're ready, just PM me where I can send em. ;)
I must say I really like Dusktrooper's bridge model and am looking forward to use it in the game. of course that depends on DT being willing to release it, and I hope he will.
Hey, if I'm going to show something off like this, of course that means I'm going to have it released. ;)

You should just email Jeroni with the GMAX model files and textures and he'll sort out the rest. Alternatively if they're too big to email, you could use a hosting facility like Fileden so JR can grab the files from there.
Look forward to seeing this complete, and it's nice to know you still have the touch
Dusktrooper, that is a sick bridge. I can't wait till it's ready! :satisfied:
Thanks for the kind words, everyone! I just finished sending the model to Jeronij. Perhaps I'll make another bridge or two or so... ;)
Once again, thanks for all your help, Jeronij!

I will keep you informed about this nice bridge ;)

Today, I made the arches thiner, and added some cables
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi140.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr9%2Fthegunkid%2FCable_Stayed_2B.jpg&hash=b6d1daf7d5133749bd43d8e369a12ff296f14b79)
TGK, the concept is really nice, not sure how functional would such a design be however ;)
Anyway, if you want to see some of your bridges in the game, start a simple one ( with three pieces) and finish it. Once it is finish we will modd it and add it to the game . But we can only mod finished models atm ::)

Not sure what you do want to mean. What the project needs are bridges models . Correctly designed, textured and rendered models. What the project does not need are ideas and unfinished bridges and blah blah blah.
If you have some bridge to be modded, or some suggestion to reactivate this project, feel free to say it. If not, you'd better shut up and avoid unnecesary and absurd comments. Thank you.
simonut, I do also hope so ;)
Oh, hey everyone!
I got caught up in some major RL stuff; ie SCHOOL/UNI, but that's over now. I'll try to get those bridge pieces rendered ASAP, if I don't get swamped by other RL stuff.
Merry Christmas, everyone!

The weird thing is,
I'm working on the Manhattan Bridge. I started it awhile ago.
I wanted to do the Hell Gate Bridge too, but apparently, we can't make 2-tile-wide rail bridges, and I really don't have time to do experimental modding.
We can of course make two tile width railroad bridges, but what we need is a connector piece that allows two separate land railroads to join into the bridge. The TsingMa bridge in the DevEx has four railroads which do perfectly work, so I think the trick is the puzzle piece and not the bridge. Also, some special placement should be necessary. Perhaps the bridge should be drawn as an avenue or highway bridge, and then connected to the land railroads using the puzzle piece.
It would be great to see more bridge models. You can also consider to make the bridge different to the reality, or at least one version, and make it a road bridge or an avenue bridge... just a suggestion
Question to Fukuda regarding the Millau Viaduct.
Do you mind if I remodelled this bridge? I really like your model but after seeing and photographing the bridge from about every angle in real life and drove over it, I noticed some unaccuracies in your model. I want to do the bridge real justice and try to model a close to exact copy of it :P

Seeing as the London Tower Bridge is the more famous of the two [c'mon, I've never heard of Sacramento's Tower Bridge before you told us about it just then. :P], that'd be the natural assumption. Also, the requesting author [jayo] is British. ;)
I posted these originally in my BAT thread, but I thought I would post them here as well to draw on the talent of those that are particularly interested in bridges (and who know about their modelling/modding). The first was my first attempt, and the second is its current form that was made using IDs from Jeronij and by copying and editing the CSX Kwanyoni bridge plugin file. I should add that this is my first time actually working with the reader, so as far as I know everything seems to have worked (aside from the lights which don't need to be there).

If you don't want the lights, just remove those props from the Type21 Exemplars. I believe their ID reference is 0x69AD0000, so just delete those lines and Re-Index the LotConfig settings for the T21 Exemplars. For your bridge, you only need the T21's that correspond to the supports to create effect of the water colliding with the bridge supports.
-Swamper
Excellent  ¡¡¡¡ I see you got the T21 to work &apls ¡¡¡
Swamper77: Thanks for the help with the lights (the ID for these lights wasn't 69AD0000, but I found it in the LE, though I can't remember what it was now). I think I'm finally recognizing the things I'm looking at in the reader and have whittled down things to just what I need.
Jeronij: I did, and it is largely thanks to you. I think I am pretty close to having this thing to a point where I might call it finished. There are just two other things I would like to ask: how do you work with pictures (jpegs, pngs, etc) in the reader. Right now, since I used the Kwanyoni bridge controller as a template, the picture is of it, but I'm not sure how to change it. Second, would you, or some other people, be interested in taking a final look at the properties before I even consider releasing it/putting it in candidacy for release?
Again, thanks for the help with all of this.
Hello Matt,
You can send me a PM with a link to a downloadable version of the bridge and I will check/test it ;)
To create the icon, you can extract the existing PNG ( right click and extract, but I think you will need Fishman to convert it into something editable ::) ) and edit it with your favourite paintshopping program, save it as png and insert it into your mod ( right click and insert file). You will have to manually change the Group and Instance to match the existing png, and when done you must delete the old png. I hope this makes sense ;)
If you have troubles extracting the existing png, you can make a print screen of the reader showing the png, and paste it into your paintshop program, and cut it and edit it there, but you must pay attention to the dimensions of the png, and dont change them ¡¡
Or, if you want to save time, I can send you a png and you can edit and insert it the way I said in the first paragraph ;D
If three stooges has used another bridge as a template wouldn't he have to reIID it so it didn't clash with the original?
If he didnt, he will find out that the bridge does not show up... but if he carefully followed the tutorial, this should not happen $%Grinno$% ;)
OK then, Just checking.
I made a bridge icon template that looks as close as possible as the Maxis one, attached is a PNG file with layers for Macromedia Fireworks and a PSD file for all programs that can read Photoshop files. Just remove the bitmaps for the Garabit Viaduct and replace them with a screenshot of your bridge (86x54 pixels), placed behind the frames. You need to remove three pixels of every corner of your screenshots, otherwise they won't have those round corners. The shadows are "borrowed" from an underlaying Maxis bridge icon; if you reduce everything to one layer in the end, the icon should look fine. :)
Vielen Dank
Hi all....
well, ive killed about 4 hours trying to go through the bridge tutorial with no luck. Here's what I get after using the material editor...
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi141.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr70%2Fchoco_028%2Fgmax2.jpg&hash=448e057558cf6418d7269db68548914f64ea6366)
I tried road, rail, glr, etc.
Even then, I tried to copy the box (with bad textures) to no avail as well.....so I cant even get 3 pieces.
Any help would be appreciated!
Mmmm... this seems to be more related to modelling issues, and not to bridge making ::) .... did you add a planar UVMap after applying the texture ?¿ If you did, remove it and add a new fresh one... it may help. I cant clearly see how you went into this situation if you strictly followed the instructions in the tuto... they quite straight forward... ;)
not quite sure what ya mean by planar UV Map ???.....but I'll have a look. But i can say that i followed the steps in the tutorial, because i dont know how to do anything otherwise.... :)
Perhaps something incorrect in the settings or not installed correctly? This problem appears right after applying the texture.
Make sure you create a 16x16 plane with the less possible amount of segments. 1segment width and 1 segment lenght. It should help to avoid unnecesary geometry.
You should apply a UVMap modifier (select you plane, go to the modifiers tab and scroll the list until you find it) to your plane, before or after applying the material, so you can control better the placement of the texture.
Reading a few tutorials about how to create basic models for the game would also help you to understand all this MAX related stuff ;)
I hope this helps.
If you are talking about the fact that the texture appears crooked, it should be a simple fix (I've noticed something similar myself): try making a preview of the model (maybe add a colored plane behind it so you can see the road better) and it should straighten out. If that is the case, then it is just a thing with the BAT that shows the textures as being a bit off (if not, I may have misunderstood your question). Hope this helps.
I've just stumble upon this one :

This is really a first category bridge :o  ... exactly the kind of bridge that Maxis did not have in mind when designing the game's bridges ::) $%Grinno$% :D :D :D
Anyway, the models gives some really good ideas for ingame bridges. Thanks for bringing our attention to it.

That because it's from Dubai, and Dubai is becoming the Tokyo of the Middle East ;)
so, i've been thru many of the tutorials, reinstalled all the software. i give up. i guess i just wasn't meant for this.
thanx for the help anyway y'all......
i just had an after thought.....(i hate even thinking about giving up something i start)....
the computer im running gmax on is XP with the RC1 SP3 installed.....any chance this could be the conflict?
If you could be a bit more specific about yout exact problem, perhaps we may be able to help you ;)
From the pic you showed on the last page, it looks like gmax is working... what exactly is the problem you are having?
so, then a road texture is supposed to be distorted like that? same happens with any texture i apply.....if that looks normal, then meh....
choco, it looks to me like the shape you're applying the texture to is somehow skewed. Are you using a flat, perfectly square plane?
-Alex (Tarkus)
just doing what is in the guide....so i think, yes.
Edit:
ok, so then i think the guide is incorrect. if i make a box, i get the distortion. if i make a plane, then it appears fine. Thanks Tarkus!!
now on to more problems....im gonna go back and review some other threads as its likely other newbz have seen similar problems. the texture only shows up in the perspective view, but not the top.....once i get this worked out, i'll have alot of time to model. and im really only interested in bridges. the baby steps will be tough, but i've got some nice things planned. ultimately, i'd like to add a lenticular truss to the fold, as there's very few in the world anymore.
but next up, cure my incompetence.
If you want the texture to appear in top view. Right click the scene were it says 'top' and select 'smooth + highlights'. That should work.
As for the distorted texture. It's probably because of the crappy viewport renderer in gmax. If you do a preview render it should look just fine.
Back again y'all, only this time I have nothing to complain about. Getting used to the environment wasn't that bad, but I still have a long way to go. So, I wanted to put these out there for anyone to have a look at (please dont mind the textures, I was experimenting ;)). As above, I'm not real sure how the game uses the pieces to render a bridge, so im not exactly sure where to put the transitions between pieces, pillars etc.. So please feel free to point out where the models are incorrect from a technical perspective. I realize they look bad, but my main goal so far is to just learn the BAT and the process.
Hello choco, I wanted to check your progress, but I cant see the pictures... is there a way you can fix this ?¿
Thanks in advance
Hello again....
I was playing with the MAX this afternoon, and I went to this bridge, remotely based in the Rohrbach Bridge in Switzerland (http://en.structurae.de/photos/index.cfm?JS=27820) ;)

I hope you like it ;)
looks good!
it looks (to me) like a bridge in a warzone, poorly maintained, dirty, but mainly because of the thick skin, looks like its armored! maybe a clean sleak looking glass one? as a little extra?
This reminds me of the old pc game StarCraft.
Love it.
I can picture a train shooting through that already. I agree with Vester about it having a StarCraft look to it (not a bad thing though). I think either a 'cleaner' texture or perhaps some plants growing from the pillars to enhance the age thing. Great work.
love it

Hello choco, I wanted to check your progress, but I cant see the pictures... is there a way you can fix this ?¿
Thanks in advance
i just came up with a basic model...nothing worth posting really. It was just a basic model with bad textures.....I still have much to learn about the BAT before I can do anything useful. But im headed back to japan for 3 more weeks, so i should have lots of time since RL is nonexistent while in a hotel. I'm hoping that once i get a working bridge (LOD's look a bit confusing), then I may be able to give back some material.
I do have some questions (eluded to in my previous post) mostly pertaining to how the game assembles the different pieces. I'm not quite sure where to start and end each piece, and how the transitions are handled. OK to shoot a PM your way?

Feel free to PM me if you want to. I always try to help if I can ;)
OK, so I finally got a a couple more hours to work on the model. Now, please keep in mind that i've only had about 6 hours on the BAT so it isn't game worthy at all....im more interested in getting a working model first then i'll try my hand at some actual candidates.
So here's a model after the Smart Road bridge over Wilsons Creek in VA, USA. I'll address my issues soon via PM, but this kinda demonstrates one of my questions.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi141.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fr70%2Fchoco_028%2Fspan-1.jpg&hash=545079e566d72784cd2c50afd7ecea8347b430c2)
Should the pillar go at the end or the middle....or is it dependent on the type of bridge/model?
Well, most of the information you are looking for is explained here (http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=930.0). You basically need three 16x16 pieces. One for the star/end piece, one for the repeat piece, and one for the support piece. All three pieces are necessary for the most basic bridge ;)
As Jeronij said, you will need a separate segements for basic road and pillar pieces (though the two can look exactly the same as far as I know). You have two general options for pillar placement:
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg208.imageshack.us%2Fimg208%2F295%2Fbridgepillarexamplebt1.jpg&hash=f2daed79d34c9af5eb613e5f5ceaea36cf765a69)
You can contain the pillar within one full model piece or, if there will be a matching piece, split it between two. The way it seems to be positioned in your pic, you could use the same model for both pillar and repeat pieces, but there might be some difficulty when creating the start/end piece. This piece is essentially mirrored at each end of the bridge. What this means with your current model is that one ends of the bridge may be pillar-less for an extended segment. Perhaps consider splitting the pillar into two halves (one on each side of that arch) so that they will appear to form a full one in game, or move the pillar to the middle and have the arch peak at the ends. This should make the start/end piece design a bit easier. Please let me know if you have any questions or if something wasn't clear.
Thanks for another good explanation stoog....i was worried to start down the wrong path before i got those issues worked out, but I hhink I got my head wrapped around this now. also, jeronij posted a very helpful tutorial on the LEX and got me on the right track. So again, thanks for all the help. I have some free time on my hands the next few weeks so I'm hoping to be active getting some models together. I just finished my first model so hopefully i didn't make any mistakes... &Thk/(
I posted this in my BAT thread, but I wanted to make sure I got as much feedback as I could. Since this is a bridge-specific thread, I figure what better place to post it.
(https://www.sc4devotion.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg168.imageshack.us%2Fimg168%2F4044%2Fhowetruss4ap4.jpg&hash=e9b3d53084871824bd99a717cc3142f713ebfedc)
That bridge looks awesome!
IMO all it needs to be perfect are some supports and a retaining wall on the start piece (although it may not appear in this picture because your bridge starts too far inland for it to be seen)
Thanks Matt for the suggestions
The new bridge looks really good, but I think you will have to play with the support column parameters... or with the start/end pieces supports...in the picture it looks like it is not supported by anything ;)
I have been working hard with the "Warzone Bridge" and these are the final results:

Did ya get my PM a couple days ago?

Thanks to all for the comments
choco, I had the opportunity to test your bridge, and there are some suggestions about it ;)
1 - You should search (here at SC4D of course) and read the BAT LODding tutorial about how to get rid of those graphic glitches.... ;D
2- There is an issue with the shadows in the repeat piece. Perhaps you shoul expand your model a bit more before rendering. I mean, this could be a shadown from another piece, or the lack of shadows because the lack of pieces.
3- Check the overall scale, specially the walls. They seem to be a bit too big for the automata cars... $%Grinno$% (this is my personal opinion however ;) )
Other than this, great first attempt
mg, I'll note you suggestion.
Btw, if you want the warzone bridge model for your paying purposes, and perhaps as the basis for a highway bridge, I have nothing against sharing it ;)
well, thanks jeronij! Kinda weird seein that in the game, but....
I appreciate the feedback. I went thru the LOD'ing tutorial, but I must missed something. In either case, I'm working on the final model with some minor changes and some more detail.
Thanks again for all the help from teh community!!
Wow! These bridges here look amazing!! Can't wait for their release...
BTW: I was wondering, has anyone attempted to make a bridge with 4 rail lines on it? By that I mean 2 natural lines togeter, for 4 lines total.
^i believe it's been considred, but i dont not believe you can make a 2 tiled bridge from a one tile network.
It looks like i got some problems that i just can't seem to fix. :'( I've checked and rechecked the coordinates of all the objects in the models, yet I can't figure out why im getting these small misalignments between the different pieces. i think its something in the lods, but i dont know enough to troubleshoot this yet. Anyone can help point me in the right direction? I'd appreciate the help greatly!
and i know the textures are bad....theyre only temporary.... :P

can you show us the LODs please ?¿
im not quite sure what/how you prefer, but here's a shot at it.
i offset the lods 17m so they are all visible. if this doesn't help, lemme knkow and i'll try again.

thanks jeronij!
Sorry, I dont have much time atm &mmm . Try this: delete all the joining faces. All the faces which are lined with the Y axis in the picture. Also try to make your LOD on single poly. You can outline the front vew shape using a simple point to point line, and extrude it 16 meters. THere is your LOD ;) . You dont need to make those holes. Make sure your LODs are 16 meter long. Exactly 16 meters.
I hope this helps ;)
jeronj, I would love to have the WarZone/StarCraft Bridge, and I assume the green and red bridges in the earlier picture are of the Garabit Viaduct?

Errrr...Couldn't you just make a transit enabled lot with 2 rail-set props on it? Or just make the bridge with 1 set on it, and then make an exact double of it, and fuse them together?
Or does someone know of a way to override the No-Bridges-side-by-side command?
im not a modder....so i dunno. it may be done thru puzzle pieces or overrides....the tsing ma is currently in test from what i understand.
I've been fiddling with a rail viaduct and realized that the start piece needs to be 48x16 meters. Is this possible or is 16 meters the limit?

-Jestarr: I'd wait for the official word from Jeronij, but from what I've been able to figure out, this is entirely possible. As long as each piece can be broken into a 16x16 meter model, you can set the number of models in the start/end piece in the reader and fill in the individual model IDs. By the way, the model looks great. I would suggest lengthening the supports a bit for more altitude variation, but that is a minor thing. Can't wait to see what you do with it.
Hmm... seeing all these started i must admit that i am tempted to try again.... We need more trashy looking and generic bridges anyway. :D

Excellent design  ¡¡¡.
...and about your request, as Matt pointed, no problem at all while the main pieces can be cutted into smaller 16x pieces, so, please, go ahead ;)
I was checking all NAM bridges recently and I think there is something that all bridge makers should keep in mind.
SimCity4 displays models differently on bridges than on lots. If you do not want your bridge models to look pale and washed out, you should make all your textures about 30% darker, than the textures you use for lot models.
Very beautiful bridge there...
May I ask that is there any way to build double bridge for trains or road?

-gardenwong: As I recall, there has been some research done on this. Visually, there is little problem with it. The problem seems to be that the network gets congested too quickly. Though there have been some developments in multi-transit tiles, I'm not sure if any further research has gone into the bridge part of things. Jeronij has released the TsingMa bridge which was designed for cars and trains on the same bridge, but I believe it only works for road at the moment. but I saw a topic called "Diagonal Bridges",I found that there maybe have some skill to build a double bridge but is it need some mod or anything to do this?
As far as I'm aware (but I'm not positive) the only way to get bridges directly next to each other is to have them on a lot. This was the technique behind the diagonal bridges if I remember. I could be wrong though, so I hope someone with more knowledge about that might be able to offer some insight. I'll keep lookinng into it though.

Now that looks great. &apls
The overall design is very nice  .
Technically, the pylons should extend as long as possible to the -Z axis. The bridge should allow as much as possible depth between its start and its end. Also, dont forget about the start /end piece ;D ;)
It looks like you're off to a great start. As Jeronij already mentioned, extend the base of the pillars a bit to account for its use on a higher span. Otherwise you can use the game base, but that might not look as good. I think a more definative start/end piece would work well here. Let us know when you get ready to put this in-game and we'll work with some IDs for you.
Bighead99, that looks very good! As Jeroni said, the support pylons need to go down much more. I suggest that they go down at least 100m. Some of the Maxis bridge pylons go down more than 700m. They need to go down this far because they will be visible if the bridge is built far above the level of the water or if it is on land.
The end piece should also go down a similar distance.
progress...

i'm comtemplating adding a wider arch in the middle. originaly i'd planned to have the starter piece with a graident.
any suggestions?
thanks for the replys. and i will add around 100m to the depth.
i also noticed a slight texture glitch when i rotated the starter piece.
there is one small difference between the two pics. what is it?
very nice looking bridge there :)
couldnt spot the difference tho :( lol

Progress looks pretty good there. As far as the difference between the pics goes, it looks like that second support on the right hangs down a bit more in the 2nd pic than the 1st (but that may just be my eyes playingn tricks). It looks like you are getting there. Let us know when you add that extra depth and when you think you are ready to start modding it, and we'll look into some IDs.

That looks really good, bighead99. Try to adjust the UVW Map, so that bricks gets bigger.
well, i'd say the bridge is just about completed.

Heh, that looks great, love the texturing job. Particularly the start piece supports(it's a shame we'll never see most of that in game &mmm). On the two pics above it looks like some or all the textures are lighter in the second one?
Also I noticed that you were able to mirror the starter pieces by the looks of the textures, are you modeling it in Max?
Really nice work on that bridge there, bighead99!
It's looking wonderful!
