This is really a first category bridge :o  ... exactly the kind of bridge that Maxis did not have in mind when designing the game's bridges ::)  $%Grinno$% :D :D :D

Anyway, the models gives some really good ideas for ingame bridges. Thanks for bringing our attention to it.

That because it's from Dubai, and Dubai is becoming the Tokyo of the Middle East  ;)

choco

so, i've been thru many of the tutorials, reinstalled all the software.  i give up.  i guess i just wasn't meant for this.

thanx for the help anyway y'all......

choco

i just had an after thought.....(i hate even thinking about giving up something i start)....

the computer im running gmax on is XP with the RC1 SP3 installed.....any chance this could be the conflict?

jeronij

If you could be a bit more specific about yout exact problem, perhaps we may be able to help you  ;)

From the pic you showed on the last page, it looks like gmax is working... what exactly is the problem you are having?

choco

so, then a road texture is supposed to be distorted like that?  same happens with any texture i apply.....if that looks normal, then meh....

Tarkus

choco, it looks to me like the shape you're applying the texture to is somehow skewed.  Are you using a flat, perfectly square plane?

just doing what is in the guide....so i think, yes.

Edit:
ok, so then i think the guide is incorrect.  if i make a box, i get the distortion.  if i make a plane, then it appears fine.  Thanks Tarkus!!

now on to more problems....im gonna go back and review some other threads as its likely other newbz have seen similar problems.  the texture only shows up in the perspective view, but not the top.....once i get this worked out, i'll have alot of time to model.  and im really only interested in bridges.  the baby steps will be tough, but i've got some nice things planned.  ultimately, i'd like to add a lenticular truss to the fold, as there's very few in the world anymore.

but next up, cure my incompetence.

PaulvMontfort

If you want the texture to appear in top view. Right click the scene were it says 'top' and select 'smooth + highlights'. That should work.

As for the distorted texture. It's probably because of the crappy viewport renderer in gmax. If you do a preview render it should look just fine.

Back again y'all, only this time I have nothing to complain about.  Getting used to the environment wasn't that bad, but I still have a long way to go.  So, I wanted to put these out there for anyone to have a look at (please dont mind the textures, I was experimenting  ;)).  As above, I'm not real sure how the game uses the pieces to render a bridge, so im not exactly sure where to put the transitions between pieces, pillars etc..  So please feel free to point out where the models are incorrect from a technical perspective.  I realize they look bad, but my main goal so far is to just learn the BAT and the process.

Hello choco, I wanted to check your progress, but I cant see the pictures... is there a way you can fix this ?¿

Thanks in advance

Hello again....

I was playing with the MAX this afternoon, and I went to this bridge, remotely based in the Rohrbach Bridge in Switzerland  ;)

I hope you like it  ;)

Meastro444

looks good!

it looks (to me) like a bridge in a warzone, poorly maintained, dirty, but mainly because of the thick skin, looks like its armored! maybe a clean sleak looking glass one? as a little extra?

vester

This reminds me of the old pc game StarCraft.

Love it.

threestooges

I can picture a train shooting through that already. I agree with Vester about it having a StarCraft look to it (not a bad thing though). I think either a 'cleaner' texture or perhaps some plants growing from the pillars to enhance the age thing. Great work.

NAM + CAM + RAM + SAM, that's how I roll....

i just came up with a basic model...nothing worth posting really.  It was just a basic model with bad textures.....I still have much to learn about the BAT before I can do anything useful.  But im headed back to japan for 3 more weeks, so i should have lots of time since RL is nonexistent while in a hotel.  I'm hoping that once i get a working bridge (LOD's look a bit confusing), then I may be able to give back some material.

I do have some questions (eluded to in my previous post) mostly pertaining to how the game assembles the different pieces.  I'm not quite sure where to start and end each piece, and how the transitions are handled.  OK to shoot a PM your way?
