ok i downloaded the datpacker file and in my desktop i have two icons one says datpacker and the other says command line.when i use the datpacker it makes duplicate of all my files then freezes,i know there's a readme file included but the illustration is different from what appears on my screen.can someone help me with that please.also i had to remove the game from my computer cause i was having problems with loading issues from all the files i had installed.thanks

I would suggest that you read the thread here: http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=204.0 and see if you can find the solution. I would suggest that maybe you are trying to pack too many files into one dat. It is not making duplicates of your files but is making dats from the folders and subfolders but leaving the originals for you to store away safely.

i see,but how do i move the files.

BarbyW

There is a very good program call Start Up Manager which will do the file moving for you but the other way is to make a folder called Plugins_Disabled and move your original files there using Windows normal way.

whats my nickname have to do with it.

lol.. he was only pulling your leg.. :)

thats cool then.now that i downloaded the startup manager everything seems alwright, the only thing is im getting confused with the red arrows,am i supposed to pick which files to run in each city

SC4BOY

In short, yes.. :)  The value of SUM is if you run several different configurations. If you do the same thing all the time, you probably won't save much using SUM.. its power is.. for example you build a big PORTS city.. this uses a TON of lots that don't usually fit in any other city.. SOOOOO... u "turn em on" in the config for the ports city tile, and for most other cities you leave em off.. this saves a lot of time loading and unloading, plus the game will play faster as well on those cities where you don't use all those files.. You can think of similar other cases.. A luxury port city with nice seawalls and marinas and boat lots.. etc.. and so on.. If you play just basic SC4 and don't change things much.. or if you don't download a lot of custom things, it won't be much use to you.

It also works for doing things like Lot Editor (LE) too if you ever get into that stuff.. it comes under "development profiles"

If you run DatPacker its use is more limited since it can't sort out the individual dependencies. You can still use it on a Region by Region or a City by City basis, but its a bit more complex to remember what you pack and what you leave out.. but you'll catch on as you play with it.

rednec

so theres no point in having a datpacker then, since i do have the cleantol file.

SC4BOY

I don't understand what you mean by that statement

I don't think you're quite getting the gist of what each of the programs do rednec. Each of them helps boost game performance, though by completely different methods.
Cleanitol helps keep your dependencies up to date, and can remove outdated files.
DatPacker takes all of your plugins and merges them into one file per subfolder, so that SC4 doesn't have to read through possibly thousands of files before starting. This speeds up loading times considerably, especially as your PlugIns grow.
Perhaps you should take some time to read through some of the threads relating to the programs.

DatPacker's thread: http://sc4devotion.com/forums/index.php?topic=204.0

Once you get it all figured out, the programs really do help.
