More fun than...

Nothing is more fun than a barrel of monkeys...

Especially if the monkeys are having fun!

The Ooh Ahh Oooh Ahh County Fair this year is sponsored by Chik-Fil-A, whose cow mascot balloon made a guest appearance.

A crowd gathers by the dirt arena... soon, monkeys will be in the big banana eating contest. I wonder who will win this time. I hear Grape Ape (defending champ) has stiff competition this year from King Kong (3 time champ). Anyone placing wagers?

A trip to AquaApe is always a treat. Though wet monkey smell is not the best...

Where to go after a full day of monkey fun?? Perhaps, back to the beach?

If you think Chimpania is loads of fun, so do the monkeys! And, there's more to Chimpania than exciting nightlife and fun- fun-fun! So, check back for ore ooh-oohs and more ahh-ahhs!

Pat

LoL schul loved it and i agree a wet monkey is a smelly monkey, they really need to dump a desensitising agent in that water that will allow the monkeys to smell banana fresh lol......

Monkey New Year!

Chimpania is a popular tourist destination. But, it also features the religious center of the southern half of Monkey Island: Mount Simian. Mount Simian is a popular stop for pious monkeys and tourists, eager to see the cultural heritage of Monkey Island/ Let's explore where the New Years Day tourists are going.

We need to come early to get a parking place. The lot is at the base of the mountain. There is only pedestrian traffic on the mountain itself. And, the lot may look fairly empty, but it is early and the lot will fill. Having done a query, I found out that there are over 6000 cars a day there.

Once we are parked, we will need to walk up the paved walkway to the shrines.

The walkway branches off. One side goes to the monastery of Del Monte. The other side goes to the summit, where the ancient Dole Shrine and Chiquita Shrine await.

The walkway to the Del Monte Monastery.

Approaching the summit

Our first stop will be the Del Monte Monastery. It is the home of the Sacred Order of the Golden Banana.

Nuns from the Convent of the Swinging Vine tend to the luxurious grounds. The monastery is on an outcrop of Mount Simian. The main ancient shrines are at the summit. Let's explore.

The Dole Shrine is where monkeys from around the island have come for centuries to eat the sacred bananas growing nearby.

Now, to the summit of the mountain.

Legend has it the shrine was built by the first king of Monkey Island, King Ooh Ooh I. The Chiquita Shrine, it is said, was built by his son, King Aah Aah I.

Both shrines can be seen in this picture, along with the sacred banana plantation and the Fountain of Prehensile Tails. The base of the Curious George Tower can be seen at the left.

Tourists love to have their picture taken next to the giant statue of St. Curious, the patron saint of Monkey Island.

The tallest monument on Mount Simian is the Obelisk of Bananases, the ancient deity of the Chimpanians. Now maintained as a tourist attraction, visitors can see from the glitzy coastline all the way to the capital on a clear day.

How did we stay so late?! Admiring all of the beauty and majesty of Mount Simian, I suppose! The monuments are lit at night, even though they are closed. But, on New Year's Eve, they do open up the obelisk for some impressive night time aerial displays!

Happy New Year from Monkey Island!

Pat Riot

awesome! where did you get that gorilla statue? that would look awesome on the capitols lot!

Jmouse

You'd have to be one energetic monkey to climb that ramp, but the memorial park would be worth the effort.
The shrines and monuments are well chosen and placed. I've always liked that particular trail pack, too.
And isn't St. Curious the monkey (or ape?) we see when the SC4D search engine can't find what we're looking for?

Until next time, Happy New Year!
