Well Jon, you sure managed to pust my "intrigued" button with those new buildings....I agree about the lights...perfect.
Sometimes I go into my own little world....but it's ok, they know me there.

Matt:  Thank you!  The first dorm is inspired by some I saw on Michigan State University's campus.  (Gotta love Google Earth!)  To be honest, the lights are all exactly the same... it's the floors and window glass that vary.  I found this to be a nice little trick while working on the Swan Majestic.

Jacky:  I'm doing well, thanks!  I hope you're the same.  It's always nice to see you stop by.

Strech:  Thank you!  That's my hope, anyway...  ;)

John:  Thank you!  The second one is kind of based on my old college campus... although my version is much taller.  12 stories instead of 4 to be exact...  :D

TopCliff:  I'll get to the more modern classroom buildings eventually.  Unfortunately for you, I'm terrible at making statues!  ::)  :D

Duane:  Thanks!

Well, once again, I have no pictures to post... but things are coming along.  I've been tweaking and testing the education benefits today.  I now feel safe in saying that every eye candy building will provide a small educational boost.  The classroom buildings will still be the main source of learning, but the extra buildings will all help somewhat as well.  This basically means that as the school grows, the education benefits continue to add up.  I'm also trying to work out the cap relief aspect of things.  The Maxis university provides some pretty significant numbers for this, so I'm working to find a balance to grow into those numbers and eventually exceed them as the school grows.

The other functional buildings are next on the list.  These may or may not be dual function... depending on what they are.  A funtional boiler will certainly still function as a power plant (as I've said), but it remains to be seen if I can add education benefits to that as well.  We shall see.

Finally... about the naming contest.  In talking with a couple people and looking through the LEX, I've decided not to go with Winterton University as planned.  I saw several things already bearing that name... as well as actual people.  :D  I've already talked to Diggis, and he doesn't mind a bit if the name doesn't get used.  He is still getting his prize and I think you'll really like the building he chose to be made for the next edition.  As University of Clayhurst was the second place vote, I'll be using this for the official name.  I've also talked to Strech about things and he's letting me use some of the graphics he suggested.  I'll show you more of that next time.  I hope this doesn't disappoint anyone too much...

Forget the statues then! Just put posters of my face on every building that say The Dean is watching you . . .

Great building Jon. Especially the night lights. Imo they don't need further tweaking. The lights at the entrance are on the bright side, but are realistic. Those places are mostly brightly enlightened with TL-light. Especially in those cheaper build student flats.

Jon wonderful stuff and great looking things to come from pack 2 err 1 or 2 i dunno but i do know either way i cant wait to get ahold of "University of Clayhurst".... With that said I dont mind one bit and Im happy either way that uni has a great name to live up to...

Good evening JB

regarding the name of the university, I think "Clayhurst University" would be a little less cumbersome than "University of Clayhurst". This is just a suggestion, but please give it some thought.

I'm glad to see the progress you are making on the second dorm pack for the university. The models all look very good. I was a little surprised to see the hi-rise model and was a little concerned that it might not fit into the overall theme of the university but I suppose universities do grow over time and therefore most campuses do encompass a variety of architectural styles as well as buildings of different sizes. Heck, my (and Spa's) old alma mater in Halifax has one residence (Fenwick Place) which is 30 stories tall! It's a real eyesore to boot! I can't wait to see your brutalist modern campus buildings when you get around to doing them!
Go Sens!!

TopCliff: You crack me up...  :D

Tag One:  Thanks!  You make a good point about the lights... I may turn them down a touch, but not as much as I thought.

Pat:  Thank you!  I'll try not to make things too confusing...   $%Grinno$%

Simdad:  Thanks!  You're right... it certainly wouldn't fit with the theme so far.  I have some gaps to fill in yet.  But also as you said, every campus seems to have a couple of those buildings that just stick out and make you wonder what they were thinking.  The name will mainly be something to upload under... so I'm not sure that it will make a whole lot of difference which way it goes.  But I'll bear it in mind.

Here's a quick update on the second dorm.  I've been going back and forth to it whenever the modding side of life makes me want to break something.  This isn't completely finished yet... but it's pretty close.

I still have to work on the center section roof... figure out some sort of roof access for the dorm wings... a few little things here and there.  But there it is for now.  More later... as long is my internet doesn't crap out again!

Looks great. Reminds me of a Klingon ship sort of. Actually, looks like someone ran honeycomb through PhotoShop and ended up with something weird. It's good that I bring humor to an area that isn't necessarily funny. :satisfied: :-\ %$payas)( /&HiPP/% %BUd% &bis& Later.  :P

I was thinking the TIE Fighters/Bombers from Star Wars actually :D

Excellent night lighting on the dorms. I would suggest maybe having a few more on, and put shades covering a few of the windows for those modest college students
Current project: Movies 14

You may have meant to search for Houdini. (result of searching for XiahouDun on SC4D)

Very accurate.  May I sugggest some "renovated" flats from older style biuldings?  Say, Georgian or Greek Revival?  Many colleges have those as well.  These modern dorms are stunning!

cammo2003

Looking great. BTW, an easy way to economise on time spent BATting may be to add a simple texture variation, particularly to that one with the two tallish towers. Do a version in "depressing concrete".  :P

I do like how that version looks though, so keep it (it does a good job of creating variation but the brick texture will tie it in with the rest quite well.

Also, I agree with the others who say the lighting's fine - really, it is.

BTW, did I mention how well your stuff looks with Gizmo's day/night mod? I kid not, it looks amazing!

SC4BOY

Of course as you know from my previous comments, I think your stuff is TOP NOTCH!.. not to mention megaprolific.. ;)   I do agree about the "shades/blinds" on lighting though. It just isn't realistic to have glaring light like the old bare bulb hanging in the middle of the room.. heh.. Put some soft/diffuse into it I'd say (spoken keep in mind by someone who hasn't a clue.. )

oldrogue

Looking real fine Jon....pretty much agree with what everyone else says about the lights and styles....

I love the new buildings JB. You are a fast worker. I have to say that those semi-circular dorms look like prison cell blocks. If you put three or four of them in a symmetrical pattern, and added an admin building, you would have a great looking penitentiary

Awesome work as usual!

Maybe that should be his next project. I can see it now: Allici Basin Correctional Facility . . .  :P

Sometimes 60's dorms feel like prison cells with their drafty windows, non-functioning HVAC systems, and that strange smell that's somewhere between mildew and stale beer...

Cheers,

What really hurts.....I lived in some in the 60's when they were brand new and they still frelt and smelt the same.....sheesh. &mmm

Yikes!  Looks like I missed a few things while the network was down again...

TopCliff:  Nice array of smileys!  I actually ran a honeycomb through MSPaint... that's why it looks so wierd!  :D

XiahouDun:  Star Wars was my first thought too.  I'll turn on some more lights... and I'll try some curtains of blinds of some sort too.  Thanks!

Rushman5:  Thank you!  Unless I'm not understanding properly, it sounds like you're talking more about off campus student housing... but I'll see if I can find some ideas.

Cammo:  Thanks!  I tend to shy away from texture variations just because they still look like the same building to me.  That's not to say I won't do it... but I don't like to call it a whole new building either.  I've often wondered how these look with Gizmo's mod... thanks for mentioning that!

SC4Boy:  Thanks!  Unfortunately there seems to be a very fine line between "soft" interior lighting and lighting that just doesn't show up in the game.  I'll tinker with it a bit more and hopefully it will get better...  ;)

Duane:  Thank you!

CalibanX:  Thanks!  They do kind of look like cell blocks, don't they?  Maybe a nice psych ward?  :D

TopCliff: Aack!!!  Just what I need... another project!  $%Grinno$%

Pat:  All I have to say is... "Thanks"  (I couldn't find the darn smiley for it though)

Kevin:  You make a good point there...  :D

Duane:  Wow... now I'm depressed on your behalf...  :D

OK... first of all... I just wanted to prove that this second building is based on something other than Star Wars.  ::)  So here is the view I was looking at when I decided to make them:

I spent a lot of today modding again.  I ran into a few snags that ended up being more stupid than anything else.  I basically spent most of the day trying to find out where I went wrong... and came to find out I had it right the first time and just changed it anyway.  &mmm  But that's all better now, so there's no need to go into it any further.  I've nearly finished everything I have left to do with this set.  I will pass the files on shortly for the translations and final testing.  In the meantime... I thought this would make for a fun little "progress picture"

Have a great evening!
JB
