Blue box and two stories.

oldrogue

I certainly agree with the blue box...and probably 2 stories but will have to think on that for a few moments.  Loved the street view...wow...
Sometimes I go into my own little world....but it's ok, they know me there.

spa

Looking very good Jon. Lots of wonderful little details. Just a thought, have you considered keeping the red box and leaving the blue as an interior courtyard? I don't know if it would actually work or be appropriate for this type of building, it's just a thought.

Fledgeling

My eyes popped when i saw the details on your latest update, its astounding and will look great with the maxis high density buildings from the same period. The blue has my vote also. Cant wait to see how this turns out!

Pat

I really like Spa's thought on having a interior court yard that would give this building a certian class...  Otherwise if you dont go that route Id do blue box and 2 floors...

*faints*

The detail you've managed to convey is simply ASTONISHING.

What are you thinking of making it?

Most of it would obviously be office, but the large windows on the bottom two floors would lend themselves to retail uses. which if you use the blue box will be an excellent explanation for the larger 2/3 floors (just to be different I'm going 3 floors).

Of course it could also be a bank. Which would explain the larger two bottom floors (customer service desks etc).

Another note, it might be an idea to have a couple of (smaller) side entrances on each of the sides. I can see myself relotting this one into a Central Subway Station.

mightygoose

id say keep just the red box...make it look like a modern extension.... 2/3 floors.
NAM + CAM + RAM + SAM, that's how I roll....

I am all for the courtyard idea, it gives employees a private break area. This would make a nice medical plaza as well. Reminds me of the building my chiropractor's in.

Dragonshardz:  Thanks for the input... I think that's what I'm going to end up with.

Duane:  Thank you also!

Spa:  Thanks!  I really like the idea of a central courtyard a lot.  Unfortunately, I would have to model it all to make it look right for shadows and such... and the way this is beginning to lag already, I'm not sure I could get away with it.  I'll have to save that idea for maybe something a little shorter.

Fledgeling:  Thank you!

Pat:  Thanks!  I like the idea as well, but alas it wasn't meant to be this time...  &cry2

Cammo:  *throws water and administers smelling salts*  Thank you!  The lower floors are definitely modeled to look like shops.  I think outside the main entrance, I also have 5 other shop entries on the two street sides of the building.  (Or is that not quite what you mean?)  I'm not sure what the final lot will be for this yet... I'll probably do both CO and CS versions.

Mightygoose:  Hmmm... I hadn't thought about making it a later addition.   :-\

Xxdita:  Maybe mod it as a very old hospital?  Hmmmm (again)....

Thanks for all the ideas everyone!  I really do appreciate it.  For now, I continued with my original thought for the back... although that doesn't mean anything for sure just yet.  The end result does look a little smaller than I expected compared to the rest, so we'll see.

I still need to add some utility doors and all that other good stuff back there.  The small alcove will be a loading dock of sorts.  I also finished the upper floors around the entire building.  I know that keeping all that detail on the back is probably a bit unlikely in the real world, but I think it lends itself well to the game view.  That's about it for now... I'll probably get the other floors filled in and maybe start the interiors a bit so the windows stop looking so dark... so maybe one more look before work this afternoon.

Small detail that's probably get lost in the render, but have you thought about adding wires connecting the two sides of the light well?  A lot of older buildings have them for stability.

Pat:  Thanks!  It's certainly worth thinking about... and I haven't made a hospital yet either...  &mmm

ACE:  I hadn't thought about that, but I will definitely look into it.  Thanks!

Well, the building is finally closed in now!  I started adding some of the details around the back and finished that part off.  I may change a couple things around yet as I'm not completely happy with the loading dock at this point.  I also started mixing the glass up with the newest windows around the light well.  I haven't done those top three floors yet though... or anywhere else on the building.  Finally, I added/tweaked some textures and got all the floors in.  Floors are usually the easy part, but there are 5 different sizes this time because of the way the building changes at each of the cornice pieces.  I ask again... what was I thinking?   ::)  Anyway... here are the latest:

I'll probably work on the interior walls and/or all that darn window glass after I go feed some people.  You'll notice I just scheduled myself this time... apparently it's safer that way.   %ban%   :D

I know this may sound weird, but I think that a more orange-ish brick texture like the plain one you have right now would fit the building better than one of your dark brick textures. Great work so far. I may hae some pics of buildings around here you may be interested in for this type of project.

Great work the building is very detailed and I'm sure it will look even better with the final wall textures. I also loved the perspective of the first image on this the previous page. When the building is ready could you make such a shot again?
oh and have I already said that I like the roof texture very much ;)

DFire870

I like where you put the loading docks, though I'd hate to be the truck driver who has to deliver stuff to the building...

Anyways, I can't wait to see what you'll do with the roof, you'll probably put in two or three stairwells due to the shape of the building, right? And the building looks great, as usual.

I like how the loading docks are now, but I do have some things to suggest...

I think the skylight down there on the bottom of the back is weirdly placed... the shadows would certainly be so dark as to not justify the cost of putting a skylight there... seems like a useless place. Infact, in early times the middle parts of buildings like these were also convenient places to dump garbage by lazy people... still is... in bigger cities before modern sanitation and collection the stench from refuse that collected in those areas would be pretty bad. I think a very light dusting of rubbish on the roof that has the skylight now would be a great touch. Shoes, and whatnot.

The extension of the top floor moldings to the inside area also seems weird. Not in an area that would really justify the cost of putting it there, if you get my drift. I think they should end after the roof notches you have in the back.

JBSimio

TopCliff:  Thanks!  That doesn't sound wierd at all... I'm planning on a lighter color scheme, although I'm not sure if orange will be part of it.  Right now I'm leaning towards a rose and cream combination.  I had a look at the pictures you pointed towards... I'll have to see what I can do with those.  The second one looks like fun. ;)

Tag_One:  Thanks!  I'll definitely do another perspective shot at the end, although the larger textures (like the main walls) may get a little wonky in that view.  The roof texture is actually from Spa... no tweaks even needed for this one!

John:  Thank you!  Yes... that second bay is definitely not recommended for full semis!  :D  I'm not sure what I'm going to do to the roof just yet, but there will certainly be more than just the central utility block this time.

Fledgeling:  Thanks!  I'm not real sure about the skylight either... just testing things out really.  I actually haven't even cut a hole in the roof for it yet, I just plopped it on there to see how it would look.   :D  Hmmm... trash on the roof?  That would be something different from the usual SC4 look all right.  As I said earlier... I know the top floors normally wouldn't be fully treated all the way around.  I did it mostly because of the viewing angle.  The other reason I'd rather not change it is the way the wall steps in and out as it goes up.  The notches you mentioned are only 0.5 meters wide... the vertical swing from the 9th floor up to the 13th is 0.3 meters.  Basically any flat wall spanning that area would be really noticable and just look strange.  The only way to get around that is to continue the cornices around but not the detailing... which also just looks kind of strange to me.

This update probably won't look like much... I'm really not sure why I'm even posting a picture of it!  ::)  I got all the window glass mixed up... much like the last couple buildings, there are 7 different glass textures.  (Did I mention this thing has 609 windows?!?  And that's counting all those double windows as one window instead of two!)  Anyway... this will definitely slow down some now.  It took almost two hours to un-group and re-group all the pieces to isolate the glass.  I'll need to do the same with the brick before I can start sizing and making the textures for it.  And the same goes for any other textures I still haven't done.  I shudder to think how many different brick textures this will actually need...  ()lurker()  But I digress... oooo shiny!!!  Oops... sorry...  :P

Until I get something else worth showing...

That looks great. It's definitely going in my cities once it's done. And yeah, the second one is pretty cool. Under renovation too. Later dude.
