Well, it's after midnight here in Pennsylvania, so...SURPRISE!

HAPPY FEBRUARY 29!

I've always enjoyed the Leap Year for some strange reason--maybe it's the U.S. Presidential elections that are held, or the Summer Olympics--I'm not sure, but I have a soft spot in my heart for the Leap Year. And, as a tribute to this, the 29th day of February, I decided to give you all this surprise. Hope you in enjoy it!

Here is a in-depth, step-by-step look at how the MD Stats are brought to you each week!

STEP 1: The time...

The first step in the entire process is to record the time that I begin compiling the numbers in the forums. This is the time that shows up at the end at the top with the date when the stats are posted.

STEP 2: Compiling the numbers

Each week, I have a printed Microsoft Excel spreadsheet of the stats that I use as a reference. To get the stats for the upcoming week, I go through each of the four active MD forums and write down the numbers (replies / views) next to the corresponding MD. However, there are other, seemingly random numbers strewn about the paper. They are:

Top left corner, page one: The time recorded in STEP 1
Left margin: Date that the MD surpasses the 45-day limit.
Right margin: Date needed for MD Index--either a starting date for the MD, or the MD's last post, depending on the circumstances.
Bottom right corner, page two: Top 5.
Crossed out MDs and dates indicate those that have become inactive.

STEP 3: Recording the numbers in Excel

Now, I open Excel and begin replacing the previous week's data with the numbers that I wrote into the printed spreadsheet.

STEP 4: Eliminating the spaces

Sometimes, depending on whether MDs go inactive during the week, spaces appear in the list of MDs that must be rectified.

STEP 5: Sorting, sorting, sorting...

After the spaces are cleaned up, now it's time to sort each category first by replies, then by views.

STEP 6: AutoSum

Now, we're totaling the views and replies.

STEP 7: Calculating the difference

We take this week's post total and view total and subtract the previous week's totals (found in the forums).

STEP 8: The date...

Type in today's date and a formula in the next cell over gives forty-five days prior, which makes finding Inactive MDs a bit easier.

STEP 9: Starting the growth process

In a second worksheet, I have the MDs' post totals for each week of the month. But before I begin adding this week's to the list, they must be rearranged in order to match the current list.

STEP 10: Continuing the growth process

All the stats in the second worksheet are moved off to the side, then the current list is copied in from the first worksheet.

STEP 11: Still continuing...

Now, we move each of the MDs' numbers back over to the list. Numbers left over represent the MDs that became inactive this week.

STEP 12: ...And continuing...

Back on the first worksheet, we take the current list of replies and copy...

...and paste.

STEP 13: A formula for growth

A simple Excel formula will calculate the growth by subtracting the current number of replies from the previous week's number.

Copying and pasting the formula down the column gets all the MDs.

STEP 14: Moving the data

Again, copy...

...and paste.

STEP 15: Printing a new spreadsheet.

A fresh, unmarked spreadsheet is then printed out.

And then marked up with necessary information.

STEP 16: Finding the Top 5

Another sort, this time by growth gives us...

...our Top 5.

STEP 17: Moving to Notepad

After opening Notepad, I change the highlighted information at the top of the file...

...and at the bottom.

STEP 18: The Finishing Touches-- Adding the data

Before the numbers can be entered, the MDs must be reorganized into the sequence from the newly printed spreadsheet.

Once that is done, the numbers are entered. One more copy and paste and the week's MD Stats are published in the forums!

So, that's how it's done. It seems like there's a lot of steps to it, but actually, now that I've got it down to a science, it's not too bad. I can get the entire process done in about an hour if I am uninterrupted and ambitious. I hope I didn't bore or disappoint you with all this!
