I have to start over from scratch. Can anyone give me any reason to make room for freight by rail? It seems pointless to me.

i guess its your personal choice really. but for me, i like having the freight rail. it adds realism to your city, there are some great train packs that add some much needed realism to your rollings stock as well as engines.  there is also a lot of user created lots/bats that use freight rail connections and these lots help add variety to any industrial area.  if you just like to see freight trains in your city, there are also train generators. as for the actual purpose of the freight rail, well i guess you could use the freight trucks or a seaport to get your freight to other cities. but if youre using passenger rail then freight rail wont take up very much extra space anyways. just add a freight station where it will be effective.
