While the standard Simcity University is appealing, it's too basic and plain. Always the same thing over and over again.

I'd like to see someone take all of the buildings in this, as well as others, and create a Modular University Pack (or MUP). By having a MUP, you could then create a road/GLR/pedestrian network within your university to your specifications. You could also incorperate other buildings into your campus (sports fields, GLR stations, bus stops, the college, townhouses, parks, etc) and design it to your own tastes. You could even go far enough to create a "wall kit" to surround your campus, with iron gates, gate houses, and everything to create a truely customizable and unique feel to an otherwise "limited" selection of university options.

I'd BAT and MOD these myself, but I don't have the time. And even if I did, I don't have a clue either! I can only do textures (I'm the one responsible for the new GLR texture that was made standard about a year ago).

Thoughts about the MUP idea?

BarbyW

JBSimio has made a modular university that is currently only available to donators who receive the DVD. It will eventually be posted to the LEX.

Although, Woodworks University by woodb3kmaster, the one ivoignob has suggested is a very good one, but it doesn't even come close in comparison to the quality of JBSimio's modular university.  Just check out his thread, start around here.  I have used these first hand and they are incredible.

I would encourage everyone to get the SC4D DVD that BarbyW is talking about.  There is alot more exclusives on the DVD.  ;)

I love Woodworks University by woodb3kmaster but it has some problems.    Missing props/buildings.    I just sent woodb3kmaster a pm about it.    I have been trying to figure out what is missing for over a year now.    I still use it, unfortunately just not all the lots.    Which sorta defeats the purpose.     Appearently alot of folks found the same problem.  There are many comments on STEX.

BTW Robin where can you get JBSimio's modular university?   I can always use more universities.    ;D

This sounds like a great idea! THen it would be possible to create "College towns" with classes and dorms spread through the city.

Anyway, I dont see many schools in a single section, without at least a road or other businesses.

This would add a lot more realism. I'd love to see one.

My thoughts exactly... which was the biggest reason I started the University of Clayhurst pack that BarbyW and Robin have both mentioned.  Currently, this pack is available only on the LEX DVD.   It will make its way to the LEX at some point, but not until I get closer to having the second installment ready.  (And, no... I have no idea when that might be! :D )

Most of these things are or will be available in the University of Clayhurst packs.  I've been meaning to start a separate thread dedicated to the whole concept, but I seem to keep putting it off.  ::)  In the meantime, here's a brief rundown of what is included with the first pack and things that are to come in future packs:

University of Clayhurst - Starter Pack

  • Classroom Trigger Buildings:  There are three different buildings that act as a functional university.  They educate sims, provide jobs, demand cap relief, etc.  When the time is right, you are offered the option to build one of them.
  • Functional Support Buildings:  There are also several different functioning buildings that add to the look and impact of the campus.  They include a small power plant, a library, a student event center (which has the same effects as a minor league stadium), and a student chapel
  • Eye Candy Buildings:  These are simply ploppable buildings that fill out the campus, but don't provide jobs and therefore don't require road access.  There are three different small dormitories as well as "eye candy" versions of all the functional buildings listed above.
  • Path, Driveway, and Campus Lots:  These lots were all designed to help give the campus a little more continuity.  The paths are all BSC Park compliant textures.  The driveways do not currently function, but roads and streets can always be used where needed.  The campus lots include some larger "quad" settings and other things of that nature

All these lots, whether functioning or not, get counted and contribute to the ability to grow the university in the future.  All together, this "starter pack" comes with 10 different building models, a bunch of new props, roughly 50-60 lots (I forget the exact number already), custom queries and reward chains.  I had tons of help from countless people and it took about two years to get this far...

Future Plans:

  • Additional Functioning Classrooms:  As the campus and city grow, you will be offered additional "classroom" like buildings.  As time progresses,  these will become a little more specific and the impacts will reflect that.  Things like a college of law, engineering, medicine, and who knows what else.
  • More Dorms:  The first set are pretty small, historic structures.  Future dorms will increase the variety of styles and sizes.
  • Satallite Commuter's Station:  Much like the airport "park and ride" lot, this will enable you to avoid needing a full university in every city tile.  Unfortunately, it's the only real way to make the university act as a regional benefit.
  • Support Buildings:  These will include anything from additional libraries specific to a student's major... campus dining... alumni gifts... campus security... the list is really ongoing
  • Sports Facilities:  Yes... there will be some of those too
  • Walls, Gates, Landscaping:  I've toyed with the idea of walls to surround the campus, gate and entry ideas, but haven't gotten to far with it yet.  I'd also like to make similar retaining walls, perhaps with steps, and other landscaping type lots as well.

In addition, there has been talk of a university SAM texture among other ideas, but most of these are still in such early stages that I don't even want to bring them up yet.  (Oops... I guess I just did!)   ;)

I forget what its called and where to find it but I have some Modular University Pack, its off of ST and since he (Yoshiisland) asked to be banned I think ST admins might have deleted all of his files cause I cant find the Modular Mall Series now. Im not sayin Yoshi made it but I have one and I think he might have made it.

I could easily provide a campus police car or security car mod to go with this, perhaps one that is only available with this university pack. However, making it specific to the campus security office would require assistance from Swamper77 because he knows how to accomplish that and I don't - so until then the best I can do is either make them replace all police cars, or i can make them mixed in with default police cars or whatever you've replaced them with, or perhaps i could have them replace the police van...?

I can't make any guarantees, though, so don't count on it... but don't lose hope, either.
My days here are numbered. It's been great and I've had a lot of fun, but I've moved on to bigger and better things.

As the creator of Woodworks University, I have to agree. My university pack served the community well when all we had was the LE, but the University of Clayhurst is far better. Plus, I made my pack before the concept of "dependencies" had been created, and my files refer to mods that seem to have been taken off the STEX. I highly recommend Clayhurst over Woodworks U!

Feel brand new. Be inspired.

Do you have a list of those dependencies?     Back in Feb I PM'd you about this.   I REALLY love WU and don't want to just toss it out.
