Geoff – Thanks for such a nice comment. The history lesson is not entirely correct as all things concerning Andau is fiction or alternative history if you like. I am glad you liked the custom buildings that I made for Hiranium. I am especially happy with how the round Diana temple turned out, I might even consider putting that one on the LEX.

DebussyMan – Hi, and thanks for your comment, it is much appreciated. Slow and patient is the only way I can do this. There are just too many things that has to be made before each update. This might change when I get closer to our own time as there are much more bats to choose from.

Battlecat – thanks for commenting and I am glad you liked the new buildings.

Kimcar – thanks for stopping by.

Mattyfo – thanks a lot, also for waiting.

Mightygoose – no, these are not meant for release. You can send me a PM if there is anything special that you are interested in. And just out of curiosity, what does XD stand for?

Soulchaser – yes, it is a lot of work, but I enjoy it.

Nedalezz – The Forum will be 8x8 tiles and might later grow even further. I have not quite decided yet. I think the development of Hiranium may not go quite the way that I and the Romans first intended.

Connor – thanks for commenting.

Will – thanks and you are the first one who actually likes the textures for the roads. I have to admit they are not that well done. But again they are only for use during a certain period of the MD.

Djvandrake – Thanks for your enthusiastic comment. Making an authentic settlement will always be a question about interpretation, like I have said before there are no photo's  $%Grinno$% or detailed paintings from this period that can show us exactly how such a village looked.

Bobbi – thanks for commenting

Kelis – thanks for stopping by

Schulmanator – thanks for your very nice comment.

Tomas Neto – thanks for stopping by and I am glad you enjoyed this update.

Giel – heel erg bedankt. Thanks a lot and there is indeed a lot of history involved.

Update 10 - Batavium 40 BC
We are now going back to the banks of the Rhine, an area that was hit hard by the Roman conquest. The Batavians who used to live on both sides of the river have been forced to settle on the south bank or to move further north outside the sphere of Roman influence. Along the north bank is a strip of land that is kept free of settlements by the Roman forces. The small Castellum in Batavium is the northern guard post of this frontier of the Empire. Only a small force has been left here. This force is not meant to stop any invasion from the barbarians to the north, but are supposed to hold their position until the reinforcements arrive from the larger garrisons in Gallia Belgica.
On the map from the last update this place is called Oppidum Batavium which is not entirely correct as this name is given to a settlement where the inhabitants have Roman citizenship. This will happen a little later in the history of Batavium, for now it is just a Vicus, which is a smaller village often growing in connection with a military camp.
Batavium is a smaller than Hiranium, but have more Roman veterans who have chosen to settle here.

First the overview of Batavium with the Castellum and the civilian settlement.

Here is the Roman Castellum.

Inside the Castellum we find the Praetorium which is the house of the commanding officer and his familiy.

The stables and some of the barracks.

Outside the fortress is the vicus which actually pre-dates the fortress.

The houses of Roman veterans are built of stone and they use roof tiles, this in contrast to the housing of the native population which are all made of wood.

Just to the west of Batavium close to the small hamlet of Dornick there is a sanctuary to a local genius called Salius. This sanctuary also pre-dates the Roman conquest, but Roman engineers from the Castellum has rebuilt it in a more Classical tradition.
The Temple of Salius is surrounded by dense woodland and sits right on top of a spring which surfaces here.

The temple is simple structure within a partly colonnaded precinct.

Hope you all enjoy this update
Have a nice easter :)

Fantastic!!!  &apls &apls &apls

Yes it's true we don't have detail images or paintings to give us a true picture, but I think your intrepretation is first rate work.   I very much enjoyed your update.  ;D

art128

Fantastic work with this update, Gjermund !

I like the small castle, it's well done. But the thing i most liked was the Castellum, which is simple lovely ! the outside of the fortress is also greatly done.

Arthur.
I'll take a quiet life... A handshake of carbon monoxide.

Great job on your monumental project.  The way you BATs work together to form realistic towns and settlements is what truly sets this MD from everyone else's.

Your Sanctuary of Salius is to die for.

Great update! As always, the attention to detail and accurate interpretation, as well as the beautiful custom BATs is outstanding.  &apls

I have also a more historical question, ¿What's the difference between the term Castra in Hiranium and Castellum here in Batavium?

Wow, your MD is so awesome. It must be a lot of work to make all those custom content. But in my opinion the result is worth it.

Amazing work as always.  You've done a brilliant job of completely capturing the feel of the era!

Yan077

Spectacular update, the Castlenum is incredibly well done !  &apls &apls

FrankU

Hmmmm, Kwakelaar, I found your MD just now. It's really astonishing work and I love to see how things develop.
Your skills are irrefutable!  &apls

A small calculation though: 20 years in 10 pages, gives us around a 1000 pages to go until the year 2000. Are you sure, you are going to make that?  ()what()

Nardo69

I'd better not ask how much you needed to create all these special custom content things...  $%Grinno$%

Anyway - abolutely amazing. Everthing fits, especially that sanctuary at the spring. Any chance we see a Villa Rustica?

Take care my friend and don't forget to update ALL your great stuff!

Io_big - Thanks a lot for your comment, I am glad you like the bat's that I have done.

Kimcar - Thanks for stopping by

Matt - Thanks, the Castellum; I must admit I am quite pleased with how it turned out. The ranch are actually just some stables for the small cavalry detachment stationed here.

Djvandrake - What a great compliment. Not only interpretation but also adjusting this to the possibilities within the game and of course of much time I actually have to make the different lot's and bat's.

Arthur - Thanks for leaving a comment. I am glad you liked the Castellum.

Grizzlybuilder - Nice to hear that you think this is looking realistic. And just let me know if there is anything you could use the sanctuary for.

Mightygoose - Thanks.

Will - I am sorry that things are not going very fast, but nice to hear that you still like what you see.

Debussyman - Thanks for your very kind words. About your question: In short a Castellum is a fort for a smaller military unit, the Castra is a fortress for a complete legion. For Hiranium I have used the Castra not because of the size of the military unit stationed in the fortress but rather because of the Legats house which functions as a head quarter for the whole region.

Vester - Thanks, you of course know how long I have been working on this.

I_love_lamp - you think so? :D

RickD - Thanks, and yes it is a lot of work, but that is the same with any kind of MD.

Battlecat - Thanks for your nice compliment, not easy to take a game from California 2000 AD to Germania 40BC  :D

Yan77 - I am glad you liked the update.

FrankU - Thanks for your great comment, and I have no idea how far I will get or long it will take me. There are more MD's that have been running for years, so I think it is not impossible.

Bernhard - Well, you know quite a lot of what is involved in getting one update ready. Thanks for stopping by.

Teaser update 11

This has again been a very busy period, and there has not been much time to make anything for Andau. There will be no real update yet. I am working on some new things to show you. Today I have a small teaser referring to Bernhards question about the Villa Rustica. Purely by coincidence this is one of the things I have been working on.

The Villa Rustica is a residence in the countryside. In most cases it would be a working farm, though the owners of the Villa would not work the land themselves. Sometimes it was just a place to live outside the city.
In Roman times if you wanted to climb the social ladder you would need to take part of life in the city. This was the place where decisions where made, the place to gather following and to make yourself and your family known to the world. The wealth though was to be found in the rural areas. Families could own vast estates in different parts of the Empire.
