This is my first normal city after testing NAM+CAM and how its working..
Its located in SF Maxis region
160K R (110K R$,45K R$$,5K R$$$)
125K CO (80K CS$ covered with a few Thalhimer Blocks,4.5K CS$$,1.6K CS$$$,25K CO$$ and rising,and a little less than 12K CO$$$,cant regulate the demand,so I once have skyscrappers rising,then some of them abandoned)
30K I (17K D,8K M,4K HT)
Education:Elementary and high school in the northern area....In the southern,I guess X is the signature!

A generic view from above.. R on your left bottom center,C in the middle and I on your right

My mass transit system, elevated rail in the R areas,100% underground in the commercial area, and again elevated in the industrial area

My industrial area with its own highway used only by freight trucks..This help me keeping the flow of freights without congestion

My first residential area..Mostly R$$..Initially,it was a R$..It was really hard to make all the buildings in Bronx apartments, but I did it,then made them historic.

Poor residents are tolerating the airport noise, crime and only bus available for transportation..I did this area to boost the industrial zone..I noticed that by the time i set up my commercial area, the industrial was abandoned by commuters..I guess they are lazy  ;D
After that a few Thalhimer Blocks were mandatory..Then the labor force divided between the I and CS$ area, which was my goal.

And most important my commercial area

I have set a monorail network connecting the lower part of my R$$ area, the airport and a small part of the Industrial area. The only plopped C buildings are the Bell South building and the Aramark Tower, after the advisor asked me to,and the Empire State Building nonfunctional..Although I always take into account the demand graph,I have some abandoned buildings,or economical downgraded from $$$ to $$..

I wont play any more this city, until you give me a piece of advice.
I ll try a different layout on the other side of the bay..This time it will be circular..R in the center,C in the middle and propably manufacturing industry on the edge..It will be a challenge for me as I have to build an effective and fast mass transit system and a circular highway to support the freight traffic..However this circular layout wont have eternal commuters,as going to a work within the borders will be faster than crossing the borders..

Any comments will be apreciated, mostly the negative ones,so as to improve my city building!

Depends on what you want to achieve. By the looks of it, you're going for functionality. Don't think you can get better advice than what has already been said. Keep experimenting with layouts and have fun in the process.

Here are some ideas to make your city look better:

1. Use a terrain mod, water mod and a different tree controller (don't forget the dependencies!). This will make your city terrain look more interesting.
2. Use a slope mod. This makes building your city more challenging, since you can only build networks on less steep slopes, but visually, it will look great! Besides, don't you like challenges? ;)
3. You can improve the looks of your roads by applying the NAM (Network Addon Mod) and the NAM cosmetic re-texture mod.
4. Try to build less motorway exits. In the current setup they are really build close to each other. If you want to go for realism. I'd try to avoid the Maxis Highway and use Real Highway instead.
5. The bridge over the small lake looks not that good. Try to build around such small lakes rather than bridging them.
6. More suburban development (or lower density development) would be nice.

Anyway, these are my notes ;)

Best,
Maarten
