Had to start over with unwrapping of the model (placing of textures on the model), as I did a little remodelling to the back of the engine.
This is what it looks like now:

404TimeNotFound: Would love to hear if you like what you see on the Chicago Trains.
Have started this new project with the evolution series and if you don't.....

Jack Wilds: Guess ..... T...... Y !?!?

Alan Waters: Good to hear.

Its a slow and long process to make the base, when it a series of skins not just one skin.

Adding layer upon layers takes some times. Sometimes, one lose what is up and what is down.

Didn't work that long, but did some few progress:

Adding more details to the textures:

Slowly work my way around the engine, adding details.

Added some color to the skin, just to see how the multiply and soft light layers affect the colors:

Mandarin(a)

Now that's a true monster, nice colours.

vester

The orange color is not the final color, but sort of a working color.

Added some more details and the colors of PSCCO:

Swordmaster

Awesome stuff!

Nice! These will look really nice in Willy's region. :)
I'll take a quiet life... A handshake of carbon monoxide.

First test run:

Think I should add some width to the engine.

rkelly17

Being a model railroader and railfan I would say no more width, but it would look better a bit longer if that is possible. Modern GE locos are long. Wouldn't mind seeing these in Canadian pacific colors.

vester

Had to shorten it down, due to the limits of the game.
CP are on my list. :)

Hi vester,

It looks good, although I do agree some extra width to better match the consists would be ideal, even if unrealistic. The detailing that I can see is superb.

I have a quick question: I was looking into trying to do some transit (automata) modeling (having zero experience doing any sort of proper 3D graphics work). I know you use Milkshape3D; Is there a specific reason why it is superior to, say, 3dsMax when it already exports the S3d files used by SC4 for automata? I can't really see myself buying a $30 program (not expensive, sure, but I have no money atm) when theoretically I can do the same with a free version of a different program. I know your preference is subjective; that's why I'm asking.

Thanks for the great work, and for sharing with us all your efforts to make our rail networks a little more fun to sit and watch and follow around (like a kid in a model railroad museum).
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

I use Milkshape 3d in a combination with 3ds Max and LithUnwrap.

Why I use Milkshape 3d:
- its easy to use,
- has the same coordinate system as the game / reader
- easy to split a model into groups.
- can control the order of the groups for when the models are imported into reader.

Can read the 3ds exported from reader, which max use not to be able to.

Maybe look into Blender. That is free and as far as I seen, use with good results.

Had a look back to through what I had on the matter, seems like the engine can be longer than I though:

Very nice indeed!

Now, if only SC4 could do multi-unit lashups and mid-train helpers.

vester

Sorry got no idea, how to help you on that part. Would love to see trains with more than just one egnine at the front, being two (or more) and one at the back (or mid train (that is new to me))

Need to rework the nightlight, for some reason, it f**** u*ed for me again...... ) (excuse my language )  &ops

MushyMushy

This looks really good! Especially now that it's long like the GE Evolutions are.

kelis

Good job with the new trains ! I hope someday in the future you bring here some new trains from Japan
