The trouble with having an open mind, of course, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it

Hi:

Does anyone have a easy method to locate the file in the plugin folder for a bat that needs a depencency.  I've kept all the download files and pictures, so some of them I can identify that way.  However some bats do not have a read me file or any pictures and it makes it very hard to locate the offending file.  Most of the time I just want to find the file so I can delete it from my plugin folder.

I know you can do it through a process of elimination but that takes "foooorever."

If anyone has an easier way would you mind sharing it with us?

@keithsed: if your looking for dependancies, there's a link to a list on the first page. could you be more specific about your question please?

@callagrafx: yes, and i couldn't find it on the STEX, LEX, or PLEX, or any other SC4 exchanges.

Sorry for not making myself clear the first time.   ()what()

In SC4 when I plop a down a lot sometimes I get the "evil" red and green marker indicating that I'm missing a depencency (I think). While in the game, some lots do not give you enough of a description in the menu or in lot after it is plopped, to identify the culprit.

Now my question is this.  How can you identify the file in the plugin folder that is causing the problem.  You don't have a good description and you cannot identify the lot from inside SC4.

I hope you can understand what I'm getting at.  Say the offending building is a police station.  With no description and no picture in the plug in folder to go on, how can I easily identify the file.  I can eliminate a single file in the plug in folder, reload the game, and see if the offending police station is still available.  I could do this for each police station file in my police plug in folder, but that takes so  :angrymore:  flippin' much time.

I could eliminate half of the police files in the plug in folder, reload and see if the offending file is still available.  If it isn't then I know it is in the half I eliminated.  If it is then I know it's still in the half SC4 loaded.  I could half it again and again and again; finally narrowing it down to the bad one, but that also takes a lot of time.

I was just wondering if anyone had any better way to find these files.

Hope that explains it better.

Yeah post a picture and ask someone.  They'll also sometimes be able to tell you what prop is missing.

That's what I was afraid of.

I was hoping someone would know of a program, maybe one used to modify/edit bat's, that you could use to look at the .SC4lot, the .SC4model and/or other files in your plugin folder.  Hoping you could run the editor, look at the file's details and recognize the offending file.  That seems like it would be alot quicker than waiting for SC4 to load time and time again.

&mmm.... Maybe you could move all your changes out of your plug in folder except all the "police" files used in the example above, and then run SC4.  Maybe then it wouldn't take so long to load.

&mmm... Maybe that wouldn't work either.  It would cause many more "police" stations to have the dreaded red/green flag since they would also be missing their dependencies.  I'll have to ponder this some more.

Thanks for your responses and help.

really sorry Keith, but there's nothing like that that I know of. If you find a good modder or are one yourself, you could likely write the program you described and solve all our problems. &idea

Think of it:
You are missing a specific file for your police station, and you've downloaded pretty much all the dependancies, but there are so many files it would take months to figure out exactly which files are missing. So you load the SC4 Dependency File Locator and run it. you figure out the files that you need and go download them from an SC4 Exchange. You reload the SC4 DFL and you now have the files you need.

what an idea....but i SUCK at programming....oh wait, no i don't suck, i just don't know how....

our problems would be solved....no more hours of cruising the net looking for an obscure file....

...oh and the SC4 DFL would have CURRENT links to dependancy files....the readmes tend to be a little outdated and have links that lead to 404 not found errors....

"$Deal"$ on a side note, does anyone know where i can go to translate the plugin pack codes you get when you load a city that has lots in it that are missing dependancies? I saw it somewhere but i forgot what thread the link is in.
The pack codes are:
-242379832
1900904061

I know there's a site out there to translate those codes but i have no clue which one it is.

also i go to Simtropolis, PEGPROD.com, and here, so i don't know which site the thread is on either.... &sly

Ya me too.   :D

My programming skills are nonexistant.  Oh well, thanks for responding and trying.

Have a good one. :)
